2015: Sambo part of winning team – PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has decried attempts by a section of the media to cause rift between President Goodluck Jonathan and his Vice, Namadi Sambo, ahead of 2015 general election.

A statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, expressed the party’s implicit satisfaction in the working relationship between Jonathan and Sambo.

It restated the overwhelming confidence of the party in a winning team that had transformed Nigeria in less than four years in spite of challenges.

‘‘There is no doubt whatsoever that the vice president has the implicit confidence in the president.

‘‘The PDP is, therefore, very pleased that they are working together in actualising the transformation agenda to the popular acclaim of both Nigerians and the international community.

According to the statement, the 66th National Executive Committee meeting of PDP which endorsed Jonathan as the sole candidate of PDP for 2015 presidential election, anchored it on outstanding performance of the “Jonathan presidency.”

The statement said further that vice president Sambo was an integral part of the “Jonathan presidency.”

‘‘This motion, which was unanimously endorsed by NEC left no room for any form of speculation, ‘’ the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the party as saying in the statement.

  • Metuh, PDP’s broken megaphone

    Metuh, PDP’s broken megaphone

Poor Olisa Metuh.  In him, we see a man who derives perverse enjoyment in publicly demonstrating that he occupies a position that is much too big for him. Through his own actions, he is found wanting. Through his own words, he shows that silence would be his best policy.

In his latest tirade, Metuh seeks to criticize the APC because of the party’s reaction to the departure of the dour yet overly ambitious Tom Ikimi from the APC. Strange that Metuh feels he must leap to the rescue of such a ruthless and shameless political fighter as Ikimi. Stranger still is that Metuh seems more concerned about the Ikimi departure than the APC is as a party. Ikimi suffers from delusion of grandeur and in the PDP he will find his co-travellers. He needs his ego constantly fed and in PDP he will be lucky not to have it starved.

His recent attempt to denigrate the leadership of the APC, its leadership and the person of Bola Tinubu is merely the ranting of an ant. It falls within the same time worn and tenuous arguments. It offers no fresh thinking, but simply offends our nostrils. Like, his paymaster, Olisa is shadow boxing where there are no shadows. He is engaged in dynamic inactivity.  His feeble attempt to talk down Tinubu is easily dismissible.  If not for the PDP that gave him a job, his ilk will never have such temerity to speak the garbage they spill out.

Metuh seems to occupy a strange universe where the personal feelings of Ikimi are more important to him and his mission as PDP mouthpiece than are the national security and welfare of millions of our people. Strange man. Strange party. The PDP represents everything that is wrong with Nigeria. A party of ill-breds and career politicians. Metuh’s babysitting services is more needed by a cruel Presidency that profits from the misfortunes of the citizens.

The fact of the matter is that Metuh thought Ikimi’s departure would be a bombshell, fatally wounding the APC. He was set to take advantage of the matter. He may even have huddled with the carpetbagging Ikimi to help him craft his evil epistles against the APC. However, the bomb Metuh expected turned out to be a small, damp firecracker that could not even illicit a spark much less an explosion.

Investing hope that Ikimi’s departure would seriously injure the APC, Metuh was not only barking up the wrong tree, he had entered the wrong forest. Metuh had entered deep into fantasyland.  Thus, let us endeavor to give him a piece of reality so that he might stop these flights of fancy and actually devote some time to the serious questions most Nigerians now ask of his party, PDP when it comes to their security and economic welfare.

In a sane party, Olisa Metuh would be confined to the fringes. But here he is given a national platform to insult the sensibilities of millions of Nigerians with his twisted logic and rationalization of the actions of Nigeria’s most inept and clueless leadership. Rather than face up to the failures of the PDP government, he seems have been placed on full time detail attacking the APC and its leaders. When you have no positive account of your own, and then attack that of the other party. This seems to be his motto and strategy. It is both naked and corrupt.

Olisa Metuh represents the pettiness and arrogance that has made this government blind to the fact that unprecedented tragedy had occurred on their watch while they were busily preening themselves and reveling in the sweet soft things that high office provides to those who care mostly about themselves.

While Boko Haram attacks us with guns, bombs and bullets, our very government fights us with deceit, trickery and lack of moral courage. Boko Haram assaults the body but this government and ruling party ambush our national spirit.  So that we may reach our finer destiny, both need to go and to take their broken megaphone, Olisa Metuh, with them.

It would behoves the errant messenger of the errant ruling party to waste less time in his sophomoric examination of the APC internal dynamics and spend more time trying to figure out and explain the grand failures of policy and promise committed by the party to which he is so proudly a member.  Why hasn’t this government rescued the girls of Chibok who have now been missing for nearly six months? It seems we are no closer to their freedom then we were the day they were abducted from their families.

Why did the government deploy so vast an array and arsenal of security forces and weaponry, including hooded gunmen, to intimidate and scare people during the recent elections in Ekiti and Osun? Is this a harbinger of what is to come during the 2015 general elections? If government musters such an energetic armed presence in peaceful states, how come it can’t deploy such a massive contingent in order to checkmate Boko Haram advances in northern Nigeria.  Book Haram appears to be gaining ground daily, even declaring a caliphate. Yet, Metu is silent to this momentous challenge to national sovereignty and safety. Yet, his pen drips with poison because some APC members and Tinubu tell the truth about Ikimi.

The APC is undergoing a winnowing process. Those whose personal views or ambitions are incompatible with the party will leave. Instead of hurting APC, this helps the party because it makes it more coherent and united to her core principles. That the PDP can be home to anything and anybody no matter how craven is not a virtue. The ability of the PDP to be an indiscriminate receptacle only shows the party’s moral bankruptcy; it is not evidence of ecumenical appeal.

In this winnowing process, numerous people may depart but again the APC will be the better, more harmonious for it. Ikimi left and the APC still stands.

    PDP condemns Kaduna blasts

    Sympathises with Buhari

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned in very strong terms Wednesday’s blasts in Kaduna that killed over 85 persons, describing the attacks as dastardly and unfortunate.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh, the party mourned the dead victims of the blasts.

It also joined other well-meaning Nigerians in thanking God for saving the lives of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi whose convoys were affected in the attacks.

“We sincerely sympathise with Gen. Buhari. Our hearts go out to him and all those affected in these wicked attacks,” the PDP said.

Expressing shock at the ugly incident, the party reiterated its call for Nigerians to unite against acts of terrorism irrespective of ethnic, political and religious affiliations, stating that “it has become clear that anybody could be a target.”

It, however, cautioned opposition leaders to be careful with their utterances regarding the unfortunate incident, saying that Nigerians must unite for the nation to win the war against terror.

The party also charged security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the attacks as well as intensify their efforts in the fight against insurgency in the country.

PDP hails new APC leadership on successful convention

The All Progressives Congress (APC) got a rare commendation from its arch rival, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday on the success of the APC’s national convention in Abuja on Friday.

The PDP congratulated the national executive council members elected at the APC convention, saying the peaceful conduct of the convention is a good omen for constructive and purposeful opposition needed in Nigeria.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, in a statement said his party looks forward to trading tackles with the APC on issues that could enhance the well- being of Nigerians.

He charged the new APC leadership to purposely and constructively engage the ruling PDP on issues of principles, particularly as they relate to vital democratic tenets.

Metuh said:”We charge the newly elected APC national officers to ensure an issue based opposition that will purposefully and constructively engage and challenge the PDP with decency and maturity as prescribed by democratic tenets and principles.”

Stating further that Nigerians deserve a vibrant and patriotic opposition driven only by the national interest, the PDP charged the new APC leadership to put the unity and welfare of Nigerians ahead of other considerations.

  • APC’s statement on Kano riot a blackmail, says PDP

APC’s statement on Kano riot a blackmail, says PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday accused the spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Lai Mohammed, of blackmailing his PDP counterpart, Mr Olisa Metuh.

This followed the APC statement calling for the prosecution of Metuh for causing violence in Kano, after congratulating the wrong candidate for the position of the Emir of Kano before the official announcement.

Metuh’s statement, which was loaded with invectives – his usual style – acknowledged that he “made an innocent mistake” over the incident.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to an inciting and misleading statement by Lai Mohammed wherein he again exhibited his penchant for insane blackmail by calling for the arrest of the PDP National Publicity Secretary.

“We are indeed shocked by this statement and wonder what sort of dirty individual that could be so unprofessional, unprincipled and unethical.

“Indeed, it appears that lying Lai Mohammed has gone delusional and requires urgent medical attention. Has he become a low life who can go to any extent to score a cheap a political point?

“It is public knowledge that we made an innocent mistake but immediately withdrew it and tendered an unreserved apology well before the official announcement of the new emir was made.

“What does Lai Mohammed have to say to Mallam Lamido Sanusi Lamido himself who tweeted at about 8.59am that same Sunday that Alhaji Lamido Ado Bayero has emerged emir?” What does he have for credible electronic and print media organizations who broke the news of the emergence of Ado Bayero as emir upon which prominent Nigerians issued statements congratulating him.

“We also wish to remind Nigerians of the endless personal attacks by Lai Mohammed on the person of the PDP National Publicity Secretary. In fact, we are aware of the well oiled machinery by the APC for continuous campaign of calumny to discredit and demonise the PDP National Publicity Secretary and other PDP leaders for no just cause.

“Nigerians often wonder why the APC is seen as a religious, violent and ethnic party. They can now see that this also has to do with the character and content of their spokesperson.

“Our final advice to Lai Mohammed regarding his incessant lies and insults is for him to seek professional help on his mental state before it becomes too late.”

  • PDP praises political class for unity against terrorism

PDP praises political class for unity against terrorism

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has applauded political leaders for uniting against terrorism.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, in a statement yesterday, described the development as unprecedented in contemporary history.

He added that the “new found unity” has restored the confidence reposed in the political class to provide leadership direction for the nation.

The statement marked a departure from the PDP’s several futile attempts to lay the blame for the sustained bloody terrorist attacks in the country on the doorstep of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Our political class has shown their commitment to the unity and greatness of our dear country. They have shamed doomsday prophets who relentlessly work against our unity by not only stoking the fires of hatred and dissensions but also by predicting disaster and countless negatives against our dear country.

“Their coming together to present a common front not only speaks volumes to the citizenry regarding the unity of the nation, but also sends very strong message to those behind acts of terrorism and violence in our land.

“This is the only way to move the nation forward. In uniting, the political leaders not only rekindled the spirit of oneness among Nigerians but also revived the faith in the Nigerian project, which were hitherto threatened by unhealthy dissensions,” the PDP added.

The party commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his untiring efforts in the fight against terrorism, saying that the enlarged National Security Council meeting on Thursday created the platform for unity among the political leaders.

The PDP called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and to continue to stand against actions that encourage violence and terrorism.

According to the ruling party, the challenges facing the nation are transitory and cannot defeat the collective spirit of the Nigerian people and their proven determination to live as one.

“The PDP believes in Nigeria and Nigerians. We believe that our country will emerge out of these challenges a renewed, stronger and more united Nigeria.

“The time has therefore come for all citizens to look ahead and join hands in love to build a prosperous country where all will live in peace and unity irrespective of ethnic, religious and political differences,” the statement added.

The PDP assured it would continue to provide level play ground for all citizens to advance their views and aspirations without compromising the overall interest and unity of the nation.

  • PDP flays Nyako’s memo to Northern governors

PDP flays Nyako’s memo to Northern governors

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State over his memo to the Northern governors on the state of insecurity in the Northeast geopolitical zone.

Nyako had, in the same memo, accused the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration of complicity in the spate of terrorist attacks and mindless killings by the Boko Haram insurgents.

The governor also accused the administration of genocide, saying the government was aiding the sect in the killing of innocent citizens in various parts of the north.

But in statement issued on Tuesday by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, the party condemned what it described as Governor Nyako’s tendencious letter to the governors.

The party said it was shocking that such a letter came from an elected person.

It said Governor Nyako should learn from other All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders “who have started guiding their utterances.”

“Governor Nyako must desist from such and learn from other APC leaders who are now comporting themselves better as a response to PDP statements which succeeded in exposing the link between their unguarded utterances and escalation of violence and insurgency in our nation,” the statement added.

The PDP charged political figures across board to guide against making violence-instigating statements even as it implored President Jonathan and the 36 state governors to come up with a strong resolution to stop the trend.

The party also called on all Nigerians, especially respectable politicians to continue to unite against terrorism and all forms of tendencies that promote violence and divide rather than unite the nation.

“Our resolve is to join hands with responsible, respectable and patriotic Nigerians to highlight and promote our desire to live together in a strong, peaceful and united Nigeria.

“Our enemies are at the gate, but together we will keep them out as we continually watch our comments and utterances,” the statement added.

    Fire razes PDP secretariat

There was a fire yesterday at the makeshift porter cabin located within the premises of the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja.

It started at 8.15 pm and was said to have affected some parts of the structure.

In a statement last night by its National Publicity Secretary Olisa Metuh, the party ruled out sabotage or any form of attack.

The statement said: “There has been a minor fire incident which affected some parts of the Press Center situated within the premises of the PDP National Secretariat in Abuja.

“The fire, which was caused by some electrical faults at about 8:15pm, was promptly put off by men of the Federal Fire Service.

“The PDP rules out any form of sabotage or attack and hereby wishes to inform all our members and teaming supporters that the matter has since been put under control.”

•NSA Dasuki: Shettima’s outburst not political

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has blamed the festering insurgency in the country on “unpatriotic elements” whose want to discredit the person, office and administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

In a statement yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, the party said the tactics is to distract and detract the President, constrain the successful delivery of his transformation programme so as to portray him as non-performing and ridicule his score card when time reckons.

The party said it was beyond conjecture that the Nigerian version of terrorism is the product of a narrow political persuasion that defies logic and reason.

“We accept the reality of terrorism as a global phenomenon. However, the peculiar trend of the Nigerian version which subsists on a welter of nebulous demands and masked identities, hacking down innocent Nigerians – women, children and the elderly – in an awful scorch earth fashion, and in an obstinate ridicule of dialogue, defies all reason and logic and only summarizes a well considered agenda of national destabilization for a purely selfish political cause. We pointedly finger the opposition.”

But the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki, holds a different view. At a briefing on terrorism in Abuja yesterday, Dasuki, a retired colonel, urged the political elite not to politicise the the Boko Haram insurgency.

Dasuki, at the event, had clarified the recent emotional outburst by the Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima as the governor’s reaction to the spate of terrorist attacks on soft targets in his state.

According to the NSA, Shettima’s statement should not be viewed from a partisan prism. He said: “That statement by the Borno Governor was not a political statement.

“He may be a member of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) but that does not necessarily mean he was speaking from partisan perspective”.

The PDP said Jonathan is being persecuted on account of his minority origin, arguing that no leader in the history of the country had faced the height of persecution that the President had been subjected to since he assumed office.

The statement added: “We recall statements by some politicians, vowing to make the country ungovernable for President Jonathan on the eve of the 2011 general elections and therefore adjure Nigerians to rise against this brute ideology of violence from which a tiny clique of the political class intends to benefit ultimately. It is the climax of wickedness only heard of the Lucifer in the distant bosom of hell fire.

“Ironically, this is in spite of his humility and his fidelity to the orthodoxy of all democratic norms and values. This is in spite of his proven commitment to the unity and progress of every party of Nigeria irrespective of tribe and religion. Ironically, this is in spite of his proven competence and record delivery of his electoral promises”.

The ruling party urged well-meaning Nigerians to resist those behind the sectarian violence and insurgency in the country and to shore up support for the President in his efforts to “deliver the dividends of democracy to the people”

    •Fixes primary for Saturday

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fixed Saturday for its primary election in Ekiti State, where the party’s flag bearer for the June 21 poll will be elected.

The PDP leadership took the decision yesterday after a meeting with the 14 aspirants in Abuja, where the aspirants failed to agree on a consensus candidate.

It was learnt that one of the aspirants, former Governor Ayo Fayose, insisted on the conduct of a primary election.

Ward congresses for the selection of delegates for the primaries begins today.

Speaking with reporters after the meeting, PDP National Publicity Secretary Chief Olisa Metuh said the need for a primary arose because the aspirants could not agree on the consensus option.

Metuh said the party would support a consensus option only if all the aspirants agree, adding that the party would go ahead with the primary even if only one aspirant disagreed.
