AITEO Cup win- ‘Our resilience to play continental football’

Akwa United goalkeeper, Olorunleke Ojo, on Tuesday said that the team’s drive to win AITEO Cup on Sunday was a result of their resilience to play continental football next season.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Akwa United won the maiden edition of the AITEO Cup on Sunday at the Agege Township Stadium on Sunday 3-2 against Niger Tornadoes.

The team played under the watchful eyes of their number one supporter, Gov. Emmanuel Udom, who led other members of Akwa Ibom cabinet and his Lagos State counterpart, Akinwunmi Ambode.

Other VIPs that graced the epic final were the CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad, with some CAF top hierarchy, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), President, Amaju Pinnick and the Vice-President, Seyi Akinwunmi.

Ojo was, however, hero of the match at his last gap penalty save earned his team a 3-2 win over hard fighting Niger Tornadoes.

The lanky goalkeeper adjudged the best goalkeeper of the tournament, told NAN on the sidelines of the match that the failure to clinch the last ticket in the just-concluded league propelled their victory.

“Our last experience in the Nigeria Professional League (NPFL) where we lost the chance to secure the last spot of the continental ticket is a drive. We wanted to play in the continent.

“We are a team with immense confidence and experience, so we are motivated to play in the continent with the backing of the state government.

“It is a collective effort, everybody is on the same page; we work for it, or let me say that we earn it through hard work on the part of the coach and players.

“We have the facility, our stadium is one of the best in Africa, so we are super confident of a good representation in the CAF Confederation Cup,’’ he said.

The Coach, Abdul Makaiba, said that he had a target of qualifying the team for the continental football.

“First, the mandate is to try and win the NPFL, then, that failed; we thought another mission to qualify for the continental competition through the available spot which did not also materialise.

“I almost see it as a failure, and then another opportunity came through this championship which I know will be a good opportunity to clinch the last ticket.

“We played this tournament with all passion and determination because we know what we wanted to make something out of it.

“I am grateful to the Akwa Ibom FA for believing in this project and also the state governor who is our number one supporter, it is great to have this kind of support from him,’’ he said.

‘How I struck relationship with my goalkeeping husband’

Early this month, Lokoja was brought down to a standstill when Tosin (the Team Manager cum Secretary and Media Officer of Kogi Confluence Queens) dragged her heartthrob, Olorunleke Ojo – former Flying Eagles and Giwa FC goalkeeper – to a fairy tale wedding ceremony in the capital of Kogi State.
A love story that started on Facebook and consummated on their abiding passion for the round leather game -make the Ojos one of the most-talked about relationship on the social media.
In a lively conversation with our correspondent, the effervescent Tosin described her husband as a rare find from the football firmament adding their unquenchable love for the beautiful game have bonded the, lime Siamese twins. After their wedding ceremony with theme and all the trappings of a football match, the couple spoke to Tunde Shamsudeen on how they struck relationship. Excerpts.,

    Meeting Olorunleke Ojo

I met Olorunleke Ojo via social media Facebook precisely as a friend. Though, as a journalist I have heard about him because he is a Kogi State indigene, and it’s so easy to have information about someone who is from your state playing football as a journalist. So, I have heard about Olorunleke Ojo, who plays for Giwa FC, but my first encounter with him was through Facebook where we became friends. He followed every of my football news. I can tell you that he likes almost every of my posts on my wall. He was the one who sent me a friend request, which I accepted. We kept talking for a while but saw each other for the first time during NNL Super Four where Giwa emerged as champion in 2013.

    Nothing attached being namesakes

Names have nothing to do with Love. The name we bear and our personality are two different things. Though, according to him, he decided to send me a friend request because of the surname, because he was new on Facebook, he decided to search for people with his surname, where he found Tosin Ojo, that happened to come from same state with him.

Our level of friendship leads us into loving each other. Before we begin to show sign of interest to one another, there is already high level of understanding between us, to the extent that most close friends thought we’re already dating even when we’re not.

The name was just a co-incidence, it’s all about understanding, respect, real feelings and truthfulness during our cause of friendship that led to affair between us. It’s normal for a man to make the first move and the woman to play hard to get even when her feelings don’t lie to her.

It took him time to talk me into having an affair with him because I was not really ready for that then. He told me straight what he wanted. According to him, he wanted a real affair with someone who will be his mother, sister and friend instead of flirting around with girls as a footballer, and I was like, wow! A footballer? Could that be real? I took my time and discovered the answer is yes, and it’s real.

    Falling in love

I fell in love with him when I got to discover some qualities he possesses as a man which are very rare. Even as a friend, I noticed them. Things like his simplicity, gentility, caring, religiosity and truthfulness. He is also trustful, respectful and generous. Okanmi (My mind), like I do call him, is a very simple guy, he has respect for anyone who comes his way. If you know him, then you will agree with me on that. He gives when he has; he doesn’t hide things. If you ask him something and needs to know, he will tell you the truth and rather apologise.

Okanmi is the most caring guy I have ever known. He always calls to know your situation, checks on me at all times as expected of a lover. He likes to share with his woman and doesn’t want his woman to lack. He loves to surprise with gifts and appreciates good look.

Keeping it hot despite long distance

Honestly, it has not been easy but there is a saying that ‘distance doesn’t necessarily ruin a relationship. You don’t have to see someone every day to be in love’. The way we communicate doesn’t make it look as if we are far from each other. One good thing that has kept us going despite the distance is trust and sincerity. If you trust someone, your heart will be safe. Less to worry about the person cheating on you and also, if you are sincere to someone, your heart will always beat fast each time you attempt to do something funny. Sincerity will make you get scared to cheat. So, trust and sincerity kept us close even while we are apart.

    Motivating him to be better

Each time his team plays, the first thing I do is to encourage him. As a person who wants the best for him, I always ensure I play that role very well, because there are certain words that spur him up that even his coaches can’t play such role like I do. In my own way, I make sure I give him some words of encouragements to get the best out of him. Secondly, I analyse him based on his previous matches. As someone who has full knowledge of what he does, I try to be fair in my analysis without adding sentiment to it. I do tell him his faults if there is any before his next match. I try to balance it up by also telling him the areas where he performed better in his last match, while I also tell him areas he needs to improve upon.

Thirdly, I always pray for him. Prayer, they say, is very important in everything we do. There is a need to always put God first. Once he tries his best to work hard on the field, we have to back it up with prayers. So, I always pray for him and encourage him, too, to always pray and even fast before matches. Lastly, there is no time his club plays that I don’t monitor their scores and his contributions. I follow various sites and social media medium such as Facebook and twitter to get the details of the match. Funny enough, whenever my club play at the same time with his team, while I’m doing the live updates of my club match, I do sneak to the twitter and Facebook just to know what is happening at their match centre. So, it’s all about interest.

    Friendly-family ties

In actual fact, my father and that of Leke were friends but we never knew our parents knew each other, not to talk of being friends while we are getting along. It was later we discovered that. Both of us were very happy the moment we knew that and I must confess our parents are also happy because it’s like a family thing. Funny enough, they are friends and bear same surname.

No wonder most people do think we are married, while some even find it difficult to believe we are not brother and sister. Our parents are happy because there is friendship between the two families.

What type of a man is Olorunleke Ojo?

Olorunleke is a type of man that is rare. Not all men are caring, loving, respectful, trustful and gentle. He doesn’t drink, smoke, club or live a bad life like some footballers do. He has really corrected the impression that footballers are bad boys or girls. No! Not all footballers are bad. What more does a woman want than a man or husband who is always there to share her pains, solve her problems, show some love, care and understanding? A man who doesn’t drink, smoke or stay in a bad company. Olorunleke is a good guy.

His type of person that I earlier mentioned stole my heart; caring, loving, truthful, simple, and gentle. To crown it all, his looks are good. He is neat and always looks presentable. Trust me, every woman wants a man she will be proud of, and am happy I have one. Another thing is that, we have almost everything in common. We share same favourite colours which is red and white, we support same football clubs. Wear same perfume, our drinks are same brand. In fact, our likes and dislikes are similar. And we are so much fond of each other and people around us can testify to that.

    Olorunleke’s favourites

Olorunleke likes to appears very simple. Especially, dressing in jean and a simple top to complement it. He is not a type of person who wears traditional clothes like that. He loves men’s polo T-Shirts, green stripped, sleeve stripped and Adidas designs.

    Deciding to marry a footballer

It’s all about choice. I decided to go for someone who understands my nature of job. It’s always good to deal with someone who has total knowledge as I do. I don’t want a situation where by I will have to deal with crisis just because my partner has no interest in the nature of my work. We share same interests as sport persons. We know each other’s programme schedule. I know when to disturb him or not.

You don’t expect me to call his line while his club is playing! Sure, I know it won’t work. But in a situation where I have no knowledge about sport, it could lead to misunderstanding between us because I might be requesting for his attention while he is working, which is not possible. Same goes to him. Our knowledge and interest of work help to complement each other very well, which has kept us going.

  • Olorunleke Ojo: My wife was the first lady I asked out

Olorunleke Ojo: My wife was the first lady I asked out

Sunshine Stars International FC of Akure, goalkeeper, Olorunleke Ojo, in this chat said his wife, Tosin Olorunleke Ojo, is the first lady he asked out.

What drives you towards Tosin Ojo?

Well, let me start by thanking God once more for what he has done in my life till date. It all started as God has planned it for us. We first met on the social media, Facebook as a friend. And to be honest I sent her friend request first because I was new on Facebook then, so I decided to search for people that has the same surname with me and luckily and as God would have it, out of all the people I saw she was the first person I sent request to.

When she accepted my request, I sent her message to thank her for the acceptance which she said nothing then. But I never mind instead I kept following her on Facebook. I took time to check her profile one day and discovered that we’re from the same State and Local Government.

So, from that time I like and comment on every of her wall post and even sent messages but she wouldn’t reply. But later she started responding and we became friends and kept on talking till we finally met and saw each other for the first time in 2013 during NNL Super Four at Abuja. Which I believe God used her presence there to make me be at my very best to help my team emerged as champion.

    Love at first sight

Even before I asked her out I’ve loved her already. I fell in love with her when I got to know and discover some qualities she has a woman which I’ve never seen in a woman before. Even as a friend then, I knew she would be good for me, because I like her simplicity, caring, religiously, mildness, passion and love for sports especially football which is very rare. But it took me time and a lot of courage to tell her what I wanted, because to be honest with you, she was the very first lady I’ll open my mouth to ask out as a guy. I do put it in prayer every day that God, I’ve found the woman I love with passion, that I have real feelings for and not deceit, so help me to touch her heart to accept me and also give me the courage to express myself to her. Because while we were still friends we became so close and fond of each other. I’ve got a lot of respect for her from the beginning so I was a kind of scared that I don’t want to spoil or end this good relationship I’ve got with her.

But sometimes I do tell her like I believe God is going to bring something great out of this friendship which she will laugh and say I should not even put my mind there. And immediately she tells me like that I’ll just divert from the topic and enter another issue. But that doesn’t stop my feelings and love for her. Not on till God is his kindness showed me mercy and answered my prayer because she was very tough and hard to get. But to the glory of God today, we are together as lovers in hands of God.

    Distant love relationship

Yea, it has not been easy though, but to me I don’t think distance would ever be an excuse neither would it being a problem to our affair or cause us any negative. All that matters are the true Love, understanding, honesty, trust, sincerity, loyalty and respect, which all those I’ve mentioned God has given us both. And again, we communicate almost every minute which has also been helping us and even make it seem we are not far from each other. And with God Almighty, we’ve been fine.

Of course, our parents are friends but it wasn’t my reason for falling in love with her, because we didn’t know our fathers are friends while we were doing and planning our own things. It was later we discovered that, and we both appreciate God for that moment we knew and our parents too were very excited. They showed their excitement because it was like a family thing. It appears more absorbing because they are friends and bears the same surnames too. Our parents are happy because there is friendship between the two families which I also thank God for.

What type of a lady is Tosin Ojo?

Okanmi (My Mind)! As I normally call her. Up till now I still don’t know, how to describe her, and even what to compare her with. She’s a woman that is not common at all, an exceptional being, a masterpiece, a symbol of excellence, a woman with heart of gold, a soul and a body of diamond, the one that mothers the women of Jerusalem, oh my God, like Lily among Thorns is my Tosin Ojo, among women.

She’s a woman that has all the qualities that worth a man dying for, though I won’t die but enjoy what God has blessed me with which is Tosin. She’s Supporting, Caring, Loving, Mild, Down to Earth, Filled with Heart of Gold, and above all, awesomely beautiful, always neat and presentable as a pride. And we share and does everything in common. Like share favourite colours which is White and Red, we support same football club home and abroad, fans to the same football star outside the country, wear the same perfume introduced by her, our like and dislike are similar. And we are so much fond of each other of which people around us can say something good about.

    Tosin favourites

She likes to appear cute, hot, and simple always. Like dressing in female Jean, other female trousers and a simple top to compliment it. She also wore traditional clothes sometimes especially to church. She loves women’s Polo T-Shirts, Red or White Stripped, Sleeve stripped and both Nike Adidas designs. Though most of the times we choose what to wear for each other. In fact, sometimes he selects the jersey am to use for match for me. And I do precisely as she wants me to do. Our love is real, honest, full of trust, and powered by God Almighty. She’s a blessing and honour from God to me. And I want to use this great opportunity to tell an announce that, I love and cherish her a lot.

Best team won Super Six tourney, says Ojo

Flying Eagles  goalkeeper,   Olorunleke Ojo has said the best team won the just concluded League Management Company (LMC) Super Six tournament in Abuja.

The nation’s Under-20 side won the 10-day pre-season showpiece with an impressive 13 points after overcoming tough challenges from the Nigerian champions, Kano Pillars, Federation Cup winners, Enyimba, Warri Wolves and Dolphins while it pulled a score draw against the Olympic team on the final day clash.

Ojo said there was nothing surprising over their five-star performance as his side prepared adequately for the annual tournament.

“Of course, it was quite glaring that the best side won the Super Six tournament, it wasn’t anything surprising to us given the level of commitment and hard work we put in preparing for the tournament.

“Our intention was to make it 100% record but for the 3-3 draw against the Under-23 side (Dream Team V1). We’re going to  focus and further work hard to maintain the momentum in our subsequent challenge, especially the forthcoming African Youth Championship (AYC) in Senegal,” said the Giwa FC shot stopper to supersport.com.

Ojo said his side are going to Senegal for the podium dance as well as the ticket for the World Cup in New Zealand.

“Our target is to beat all comers at the AYC in Senegal and qualify for the World Cup as African champions. That’s not to say the championship will be cheap nor the opponents but with hard work and determination no team can stop us from achieving our aim,” said Ojo.

The Flying Eagles will campaign for glory in Group A together with hosts, Senegal, Ivory Coast and Congo while the group winners and runners-up will qualify for the quadrennial football fiesta in the Oceania state, New Zealand.
