    Olubadan-designate lauds predecessor’s legacy

It was a moment of sober reflections on Monday at the Aliiwo family compound of the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, as the Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, paid glowing tributes to his predecessor for engendering oneness, unity and love among the Olubadan Advisory Council.

Olakulehin was accompanied by three members of the Advisory Council – Osi Balogun (Lateef Adebimpe), Ashipa Olubadan (Abiodun Kola-Daisi) and Ashipa Balogun (Kolawole Adegbola).

They were welcomed by Senator Kola Balogun, Baba Kekere of the late Olubadan.

Oba Olakulehin said the seed of love and unity planted by the late Oba Balogn gave the fruit as being witnessed through the visit. He also described the visit as historic, adding that the kind of camaraderie which existed among members of the Olubadan Advisory Council during Oba Balogun’s reign was unheard in Ibadan’s traditional history.

The Olubadan-designate urged the Aliiwo family to be thankful to God for the life and times of their departed patriarch, saying ‘though the reign was short in the eyes of men, but the impacts and legacies brought to Ibadan should be enough consolation and source of gratitude to God Almighty’.

Senator Balogun, a member of the Ninth Assembly from Oyo South Senatorial, praised Oba Olakulehin for the heroic and historic visit, emphasising that it had never been heard in history that an Olubadan-designate visited the family of his predecessor.

Balogun insisted that ‘the uniqueness of Ibadan remains unfathomable to the uninitiated when it comes to relationship as Ibadan sons and daughters are always related as brothers and sisters not minding the largeness of the metropolis’.

He added: “The outsiders wonder why we always refer to one another as brother and sister, but, what they don’t know is that the Ibadans have a way of being related, either maternally or paternally, and where that does not exist, we become related through marriage, and if any of those mentioned is missed, then we become related through our common masquerade festival.

“Today is the demonstration of that oneness and it is my prayer that the unity being demonstrated would lead to a big transformation, growth and development of our land.

“On behalf of our late patriarch and the entire Aliiwo family, I say a big congratulations to Kabiyesi for the grace to be nominated, and it is our prayer that God will grant you good health and longevity of life on the throne. We are happy to receive you and assure your Majesty that the family will always be there for you, Kabiyesi.”

Family pays royal homage to Olubadan-designate

Members of the Daramola family in the Ita Baale area of Ibadan have paid a royal homage to the Olubadan-designate, Oba Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin.

The family’s representatives paid the royal homage to the Olubadan-designate at his Alalubosa residence on Saturday, May 4.

The Daramola family’s compound is located at E2/177A Ita Baale, opposite the Olakulehin family compound where the Olubadan-designate hails from.

It was gathered that the Daramola family is one of the prominent families in Ita Baale in Ward 2 in Ibadan North East local government area.

Other families within the area are Okugbaja, Olakulehin, Daodu, Jenriyin, Akinrinde (Kola Daisi), Kuye, Mosaderin, Ogboriefon and Jenrola (Arisekola Alao).

The family’s representatives were first received by the Olubadan-designate’s heir, Hon. Sumbo Owolabi, and other members of the family before they were taken to the inner room where they met the Olubadan-designate and paid the royal homage.

A member of the Daramola family, Musliudeen Adebayo, confirmed the development in a statement made available to journalists on Monday, May 6.

Adebayo, a social worker and journalist, maintained that it has always been the culture and tradition for family members whose houses are close to the Olubadan-designate to pay royal homage.

He said that members of the Daramola family are happy that the Olubadan stool is coming back to Ita Baale after the reign of Baale Oyesile Olugbode who ruled from 1851 to 1864.

He noted: “I wish to use this medium to congratulate our Baba, Oba Owolabi Akinloye Olakulehin the Olubadan-designate as he ascends the Olubadan stool soon.

“We members of the Daramola family whose family compound is situated at E2/177A in Ita Baale on Saturday paid a royal homage to the Olubadan-designate. The few of us who made it to the house paid the homage on behalf of other members of the extended family both at home and in the Diaspora.

“It has always been the tradition for family members whose houses are close to the next person to occupy the stool to pay royal homage. Some members of various families including our own had earlier gone to pay the royal homage. But, we the Daramola family thought that we, in particular, should pay the royal homage to the Olubadan-designate because of the closeness to our own family.

“We are happy that the Olubadan stool is coming back to Ita Baale. Ita Baale produced only one Baale since Ibadan was established over 200 years ago. Baale Oyesile Olugbode from Ita Baale was the 7th traditional ruler in Ibadan and reigned for thirteen (13) years, between 1851 and 1864.

“The title of Olubadan of Ibadanland has not been introduced as at that time. The title of the Olubadan was introduced in 1930 during the reign of Olubadan Okunola Abaasi Alesinloye from Isale Ijebu who reigned for sixteen years, from 1930-1946.

“We are happy that this is the first time the traditional ruler in Ibadan with the Olubadan of Ibadanland title will come from Ita Baale. Olakulehin compound is at the front of our house. The family houses around the area are; Daramola, Okugbaja, Daodu, Jenriyin, Akinrinde (Kola Daisi), Kuye, Mosaderin, Ogboriefon and Jenrola (Arisekola Alao).”
