    The Olubadan-in-council has declared the planned inauguration of Iyalode of Oyo State by a group of individuals as illegal.

    The council said such title was illegal and unknown to Ibadan Chieftaincy laws.

    It gave the order during its meeting presided over by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

    The meeting, which lasted for two hours, was attended by other members of the Olubadan-in-council including; Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, Otun Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Kolawole Adegbola, Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Eddy Oyewole-Foko, Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Olubunmi Dada-Isioye, Ashipa Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi, Ashipa Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Dauda Abiodun Azeez, Ekerin Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Hamidu Ajibade and Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin.

    The Olubadan-in-Council asked any group by whatever name called to suspend every other chieftaincy installation, particularly the one slated for tomorrow at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, for peace to reign in the land.

    The council noted that such a title is illegal and unknown to the spirit of Ibadan Chieftaincy laws.

    The council gave the order during its meeting presided over by the Olubadan of Ibadanland,, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

    The Olubadan-in-Council has condemned the proposed inauguration of the “Iyalode of Oyo State” by a group of individuals, declaring it illegal and contrary to the Ibadan Chieftaincy Laws. 

    Presiding over a two-hour meeting in Ibadan, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, alongside council members, rejected the proliferation of unauthorized chieftaincy titles.

    The meeting was attended by notable figures, including the Otun Olubadan, Oba Rasidi Ladoja; Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola; and other high-ranking chiefs. 

    The meeting which lasted for two hours was attended by other members of the Olubadan-in-council including; Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, Otun Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Kolawole Adegbola, Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Eddy Oyewole-Foko, Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Olubunmi Dada-Isioye, Ashipa Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi, Ashipa Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Dauda Abiodun Azeez, Ekerin Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Hamidu Ajibade and Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin.

    The council directed the suspension of all chieftaincy installations, including one scheduled for November 28, 2024, at Mapo Hall, urging groups to refrain from unauthorized activities to maintain peace in the city. 

    Additionally, the council emphasized that only titles conferred with the Olubadan palace’s knowledge would be officially recognized.

    It also advised market men and women in Ibadan to focus on their trade and avoid political disputes that could disrupt the harmony of the ancient city.

    “Information brought to the attention of the Olubadan-in-council has it that some unscrupulous elements among the market leaders in the ancient city have perfected plans to install Iyalode of Oyo state.

    “Iyalode is a traditional title which is not a toy in the hands of any group of people.

    “Such installation is illegal and unknown to Oyo state chiefs law 2000 and Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration. The appointment of Iyalode is an exclusive preserve of the people of the town under the leadership of their traditional ruler who is the consenting and presiding authority.

    “Each town or city has its own Iyalode, that position is a traditional title that is peculiar to each town. It is not an honorary title that can be dashed out to anyone. Are they saying that the Iyalode of Ibadanland, High Chief (Mrs)Theresa Laduntan Oyekanmi who waited for 42 years to become Iyalode of Ibadanland to be answerable to an individual who was just handpicked from the street by a faceless group of people?

    “We called on the security agencies in the state to arrest and apprehend the sponsors and beneficiaries of this illegal act”, the monarch said.

    After the meeting, the monarch also installed some Mogajis and Baales, where he urged the new title holders not to engage in land grabbing or any act of misconduct.

    Oba Olakulehin who spoke through the Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin advised the newly installed traditional title holders not to turn themselves into lords over their subjects.

    Southwest Muslim leaders visit Olubadan

    The leaders of the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) have paid a visit to Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin.

    The delegation, led by MUSWEN President Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo, was welcomed at the Olubadan’s palace in Oke Aremo on Saturday.

    It included Deputy President I Alhaji Rafiu Ebiti, Executive Secretary Prof. Muslih Tayo Yahya, Prof. Wole Abbas, and various Presidents and Chairmen of State Muslim Communities and Councils from the South West region. Notable attendees were Alhaji Dr. Hammed Bakare from Ekiti, Alhaji Mustapha Olawuyi from Osun, Alhaji Kamaldeen Olatunde, Secretary-General of Ogun State Muslim Council, Alhaji (Chief) Bayo Oyero, Chairman of the Ibadan Muslim Community, immediate past chairman of NASFAT Alhaji Bayo Azeez, Dr. Mrs. Lateefat Dairo, State Amirah of FOMWAN, and Alhaji Murisiku Abidemi Siyanbade, Secretary-General of the Muslim Community of Oyo and Chairman of the 2024 General Assembly Planning Committee. Alhaji Siyanbade introduced the delegation to Kabiyesi Olubadan, alongside other Muslim leaders from across the South West States.

    Members of the Olubadan-in-Council in attendance included Oba Kolawole Adegbola, Otun Balogun of Ibadanland; Oba Eddy Oyewole, Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland; Oba John Olubunmi Isioye-Dada, Osi Balogun of Ibadanland; Oba Abiodun Kola Daisi, Ashipa Olubadan of Ibadanland; Oba Salaudeen Hamidu Ajibade, Ekerin Olubadan of Ibadanland; Oba Muritala Adebayo Akande, Ekaarun Olubadan of Ibadanland; High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin, Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland; and High Chief (Senator) Sarafadeen Abiodun Ali, Ekaarun Balogun of Ibadanland.

    In his address, Oladejo emphasised that MUSWEN serves as the umbrella body for all Muslim organizations and communities in the South West region. 

    He noted that since its establishment, MUSWEN has been committed to championing the interests of Muslims in the area.

    He maintained that the courtesy visit is part of MUSWEN’s activities for the 9th General Assembly of the organisation.

    The Olubadan who spoke through the Ekaarun Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief (Senator) Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli said he was happy to receive the delegation.

    He advised the organisation to continue to preach religious harmony among the people of the South West region.

    “Olubadan is happy to receive this declaration. The Olubadan said that he want you to continue to preach religious harmony in the South West.

    “We know that there is religious tolerance here and we want you to continue to do that.

    “Olubadan said that he is in support of anything that will bring development to Ibadan and Oyo state in general.”

    Olubadan hails Sultan for promoting religious tolerance

    The Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakunlehin, has praised the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for promoting religious tolerance across the country.

    Oba Olakulehin spoke when he hosted the Sultan of Sokoto yesterday in his palace at Oke Aremo in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

    The Sultan was accompanied by Oyo State Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal; President of Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN), Rasaki Oladejo, who is also the Deputy President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), and other leaders of the organisation.

    Oba Olakulehin, who spoke through the Ekaarun Balogun of Ibadan, Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, showered encomiums on the Sultan for his unifying activities as the Co-Chairman of the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC).

    The monarch also urged Alhaji Abubakar to continue to unite Nigerians by promoting religious harmony and tolerance among Nigeria’s diverse religions.

    He said: “The Olubadan appreciates your attendance at his coronation in July this year. He also appreciates your visit today.

    “The Olubadan thanks you for the roles you have been playing in preaching religious tolerance and harmony in the country.

    “The Olubadan implores you to continue to play your role as the co-chairman of Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC).”

    The Sultan stressed that he had visited Ibadan more than any other city in the Southwest.

    He said: “I wish the Olubadan more years on the throne. As I said earlier, I am not new to Ibadan. We are all brothers.”

    Other personalities on the visit included the Otun Balogun of Ibadan, Oba Kolawole Adegbola; Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Salawudeen Hamidu Ajibade; and the Ekerin Balogun of Ibadan, High Chief Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin.

    Olubadan installs OYSIEC chairman Olagunju Mogaji

    The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has installed the Chairman, Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju as Mogaji of Opere Compound, Isale -Osi in Ibadan Southwest Local Government.

    The prestigious chieftaincy title of Ibadanland was conferred on Olagunju, a Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) with other eight others from various compounds in Ibadan.

    The monarch urged the newly installed Mogajis not to act as lords and masters over their families, warning them against involving in negative conduct that can tarnish their image. 

    Speaking with newsmen after his installation, Olagunju thanked family members for finding him worthy of the chieftaincy title, saying contributions of individuals towards the development of their respective communities cannot be overemphasised.

    He said: “As an Ibadan man, one thing that cannot be taken away from us is our value to our community. Whoever you are, you must ensure that you add value to your community. By adding value to your community, that is when they can trust you, they can have confidence in you to become a leader.

    “If anybody had told me two months ago that I would be a Mogaji , I would have said no. Because I am junior to many in the family, but in their wisdom and because of my contribution to the community, they finally called me to lead the community.

    “I have many plans. I have been doing it before, empowering the youth, renovating the house, both at home and in our village. I will continue to do this, make more efforts to ensure that the name becomes more notable in Ibadanland. 

    “We must bring ourselves together and add value to our community.

    “I am highly excited, And I thank God for it because I didn’t expect it. I thank God for doing it.”

    Book launch on late Olubadan holds tomorrow

    A book on the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Lekan Balogun, will be launched tomorrow at Civic Centre, Idiape, Ibadan.

    The event is expected to be the high point of a symposium on the late monarch, who reigned between March 11, 2022 and March 14, 2024.

    The book, written by an educationist, Dr Layo Adeniyi, which chronicles the Ibadan chieftaincy traditional system, also delves into the life and time of Oba Balogun.

    It has 221 pages, which cover 21 chapters. The book focuses on past heroes of Ibadan, founders, notable Olubadan, ruling lines and the emoji of Ibadanland

    It explains ascendancy to the Olubadan throne, the journey to become a high chief as well as members of Olubadan-in-council.

    The book details the uniqueness of Ibadan chiefs in ascending the throne of Olubadan without any rancour.

    The book titled: ‘The Life and Times of 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, the Late Oba Lekan Balogun’, according to the organisers, is a must-read by indigenes of Ibadan, residents and well-wishers of the city.

    It pays tributes to eminent sons and daughters of the city and its fallen heroes.

    Alhaji Fatai Olanrewaju, the Ekerin Parakoyi of Ibadanland, and High Chief Fijabi, Agba Akin Olubadan, will be chief launchers, while Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde will be special guest of honour.

    Olubadan of Ibadan Oba Owolabi Olakulehin is the grand host. Oba Rashidi Ladoja is expected to be the chairman of the event.

    Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has advised newly promoted chiefs in Ibadan to uphold the traditional values of the city.

    He gave the advice at the weekend during the promotion of two Mogajis, who joined the Balogun chieftaincy line.

    The new traditional title holders are Chief Adenrele Lekan-Salami, who was promoted from Mogaji Oyetunde to Ajia Balogun of Ibadanland and Chief Adewale Abass Kadiri, who was elevated from Mogaji Olofa Irefin to Jagun Balogun of Ibadanland.

    The promotion of the two Mogajis to join the Balogun chieftaincy line, according to the monarch, was done in line with the vacancies in the Balogun chieftaincy line.

    Oluwo of Ibadanland, Chief Wahab Labosinde, during the promotion, decorated the two chiefs with the traditional ‘Akoko’ leaves. Oba Olakulehin enjoined the chiefs to uphold the traditional values of the ancient city of Ibadanland.

    “Ibadan has rich traditional values and a strong cultural heritage. I want you to uphold the rich cultural values and traditions in Ibadanland.  You should remain good ambassadors of our traditional institution. I congratulate both of you once again.”

    Olubadan of Ibadanland Oba Owolabi Olakulehin  has felicitated the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Ladoja on his 80th birthday.

    The monarch congratulated Oba Ladoja on his achievements on earth noting his contributions to Ibadan land, Oyo state and Nigeria as a nation.

    He expressed gratitude to the God Almighty for sparing the life of Oba Ladoja to witness his 80th birthday celebration.

    Olubadan said: ” On this landmark occasion and joyous celebration of 80 years, I recognise, celebrate and salute your service to Ibadan land and indeed Oyo State on behalf of the Olubadan – in – Council,  the good people and residents of Ibadan land.

    “You are a worthy son and ambassador of Ibadan land and we are proud of you and your noble achievements in your eight decades on earth

    “My prayer is that the Almighty will give you many more years in good health and wealth to continue in service to humanity”.

    The monarch further appreciated Oba Ladoja’s love for peace and unity in Ibadan land and his commitment to the promotion and preservation of Ibadan cultural heritage.

    He used the occasion to admonish traditional title holders, indigenes as well as residents of the ancient city to ensure the maintenance of peaceful co – existence for Ibadan’s development in all sectors and areas of human endeavour.

    Newly elevated traditional chiefs have been admonished to use their new positions to attract more developmental projects to Ibadanland. 

    The charge was given on Friday by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, during the elevation ceremony of four traditional title holders in the Balogun line. 

    Oba Olakulehin while speaking, said the promotion of the chiefs was done in order to fill the vacancies in the Balogun line. 

    The monarch used the medium to appeal to the traditional title holders to use their new positions to attract more developmental projects to the city. 

    He said: “I congratulate you all on your elevation to the new positions today which marks another epoch making day in the history of Ibadanland. 

    “I am aware that you have been attracting different projects for the development of Ibadanland. I want you not to relent in what you have been doing. 

    “I want you to use your new promotion to attract more developmental projects to ensure that Ibadan continue to be at the forefront in all areas of human endeavour”. 

    The Oluwo of Ibadanland, Chief Wahab Popoola Labosinde during the ceremony decorated the elevated chiefs with the traditional Akoko leaves.

    The chiefs elevated are; Chief Adegboyega Taofeek Adegoke who was promoted from Aare Onibon Balogun to Aare Egbe Omo Balogun of Ibadanland, Chief Monsor Abiola Olatunji Arulogun who was elevated from Bada Balogun to Gbonka Balogun of Ibadanland, Chief Taiwo Odunlami Akande who advanced from Ajia Balogun to Aare Onibon Balogun of Ibadanland and Chief Ibrahim Remi Babalola who climbed the ladder from Jagun Balogun to Bada Balogun of Ibadanland.

    The event was witnessed by members of the Olubadan-in-Council among whom are; the Otun Olubadan, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, Osi Olubadan, Oba Eddy Oyewole-Foko, Osi Balogun, High Chief John Olubunmi Isioye-Dada, Asipa Olubadan, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi, Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Amidu Ajibade, Ekerin Balogun, High Chief Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin and Ekaarun Balogun, High Chief (Senator) Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli.
