    The speaker, Oyo state House of Assembly, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin has mourned the death of the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Mohood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II.

    The royal father joined his ancestors on Thursday at the University College Hospital, UCH during a brief illness at the age of 82.

    The speaker in a condolence message said the late Olubadan lived a great and fulfilled life.

    He said: “This is another loss not only to Ibadanland but to Oyo state in general. We lost a great king and a special one at that. Late Oba Sen. Lekan will be greatly missed by everyone of us. Baba’s two years reign was peaceful and eventful.”

    Ogundoyin said Oyo state would miss the elderly and wise counselling of the royal father whose proficiency and wealth of knowledge cut across both administrative and political experiences.

    “Late Oba Balogun was an accomplished academic, administrator, editor, writer and publisher as well as a successful politician. To sum it up, he was an all round achiever. May the soul of Oba Mohood Lekan Balogun find repose with his creator, Allah. 

    “My sincere condolences to the Government of Oyo State, the people of Ibadanland and the family of the late Olubadan”, Oyo speaker stated.

    Mourners and sympathisers of different status and walks of life on Friday trooped into the Alarere residence of late Olubadan, Oba Lekan Balogun to commiserate with the immediate family on the demise of the monarch.

    The visitors were being received by the wife of the late monarch, Olori Funmilayo alongside other family members.

    The visitors who take their time to fill the condolence register, all lauded the late Olubadan on his impact on the ancient city and the state as a whole.

    The Nation observed that the Alarere residence was devoid of its usual fanfare and heavy activities as many sympathisers at the residence were seen seated in clusters exchanging chit-chat. 

    While many were recounting their last encounter with the monarch, others were full of stories of impact made on them by the late Olubadan.

    Security operatives including uniformed police officers were seen in large number at the residence as gloomy and sadness enveloped the residence. 

    The early callers, including, a legal luminary and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prince Abioye Asanike said the late Olubadan, being so educated took control of city, the elites and managed the city very well. 

    He said: “What I can just say about the late Olubadan is that after the demise of our former Olubadan Soliu Adetunji, Oba Balogun, being an educated person took control of the city, controlled of the elites and managed the city very well. 

    “His death is a great loss to Ibadanland. We have been looking forward to seeing him using another nine years like our own father Olubadan Asanike but he stayed briefly and departed, that is God for you. 

    “He did very well and I thought he was going to be the one to move to the new palace because he inspected the palace recently thinking that he will move there.”

    Another early caller, the President-General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigene, (CCII), Adeniyi Ajewole who led top members of the Council on the condolence visit said it was painful that the late Olubadan could not occupy the almost completed Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo despite inspecting it recently.

    Ajewole said Oba Balogun, as a Senator, schoolar and indigene of Ibadanland, contributed immensely to the completion of Olubadan palace, adding that CCII thought he would be the first king to adorn the palace, but for his short reign.

    The CCII PG said though the reign lasted just 2years and three days, Ibadanland would always remember him for peace and the unprecedented development witnessed in the ancient city during his reign. 

    Other early callers who as at Friday had signed the condolence register include: the Oyo mesial, the Senator representing Oyo Central, Dr Yunus Akintunde, Oyo State PDP Women Leader, Alhaja Wulemot Ibitoye, NSCDC Egbeda Division, Oba Sabo-Ibadan, Alhaji Ali Dahiru Zungeru and a foremost media practitioner, Yinka Fabowale.

    Oba Olalekan Balogun who was presented the staff of office by Governor Seyi Makinde, on March 11, 2022, joined his ancestors late Thursday night at age 81.

    As at the time of this report, many of the sympathisers were already heading to the Mapo Hall, where the late monarch would be laid-in-state before being laid to rest at his Aliiwo ancestral home, Ibadan.

    Ibadan High Chiefs pays homage to Olubadan designate

    Barely 20 hours after the demise of the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, High Chiefs in Ibadan land have visited the new Olubadan designate, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin.

    The Olubadan-in-Counciil on Friday, March 15, held a close door meeting with the Olubadan designate.

    The meeting comes on the heels of the passage of Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Lekan Balogun, who joined his ancestors on Thursday night at the age of 81.

    The High Chiefs meet at the Alalubosa residence of Oba Olakulehin, who is next in line to ascend the throne of Olubadan.

    Some members of Olubadan-in-council at the meeting include Otun of Olubadan and former governor of Oyo State, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, Oba Hamidu Ajibade, Oba Adebayo Akande and Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi.

    Speaking after the meeting, former governor of the state and the Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Rashidi Ladoja stated that Ibadan already has Olubadan designate and there is no question about that.

    He said: “The Departed monarch (Oba Balogun) came from the Otun line, the next monarch will be from Balogun line, so, the head of Balogun line is the Balogun of Ibadanland, who has become the Olubadan designate.

    “We all know that Ibadan does things accordingly, if a king dies, we already know who is next, we refer to him as designate.

    “We are here to formalize what next after the burial rite of the deceased would have been completed, we also discussed how to give befitting burial to the deceased.

    “Since the deceased is a Muslim, he has to be buried in Islamic way, and the Islamic way is that he has to be buried today, so, it has been decided that he will be buried today at Aliwo, which is his ancenetral home by 4pm today.

    “There will be a lying-in-state at Mapo hall from 12pm to 1pm before they move to Aliwo for burial, after that, there will be prayer for the monarch

    “There is no date yet for the coronation of new Olubadan, but the date shall be announce as soon as the burial rite for the deceased is completed.”

    A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) in Oyo State, Dr. Kazeem Abidikugu, has commiserated with the immediate family of Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, Governor Seyi Makinde, the Olubadan-in-Council, residents and indigenes of Ibadan land over the demise of the monarch.

    Abidikugu, who was a PDP House of Representatives aspirant for Ibadan South East / North East Federal Constituency in 2023, expressed sadness over the death of the Olubadan who just marked his second year on the throne this week.

    A statement by Abidikugu stated that the passage of the first class monarch was a shock to him because he spoke with him on Saturday from his base in the United Kingdom, not knowing that will be the last time.

    He however said everyone must take it that death is an inevitable end to all mankind.

    Abidikugu said the late Olubadan lived a decent life and contributed not only to the development of Ibadan land but the entire country after served as a Senator.

    “The late Olubadan was an intellectual, a great politician, eloquent and cerebral in his thoughts and actions. As a senator he contributed greatly to the constitutional development of our country.

    “As the Olubadan of Ibadan land, his tenure marked progress, development and peace,” the United Kingdom-based Psychiatric Consultant said in the statement.

    “I spoke with him on Saturday on video from my base in the United Kingdom, not knowing that will be last time. This is to drive home the fact that life is transient,” he added.

    He commiserated with the late Olubadan’s family and said Ibadan indigenes should take solace in the fact the late Olubadan’s reign though short witnessed immense developments and peace in the entire Ibadan land.

    He said the fact that the late Olubadan passed on during the Holy month of Ramadan is a sign that Allah has already granted him Aljannah fridaous.

    The late 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun will begin his journey home with a lying-in-state at the ancient Mapo Hall, Ibadan.

    The corpse is presently deposited at the UCH morgue where it was moved, shortly after the monarch was confirmed dead, late Thursday night.

    The remains, it was gathered would be at the Mapo Hall, on Friday afternoon, to allow the members of the community to pay their last respects to the foremost monarch.

    The late Olubadan was installed at the same venue two years and three days ago.

    The remains would later be moved to the Aliiwo family compound for interment according to Islamic rites.

    President Bola Tinubu has mourned the death of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Mohood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II.

    In a statement issued by his special adviser on media and publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu noted that the late Olubadan was an exceptional monarch, who used his stool for the service of humanity.

    The president condoled with the family of the Olubadan, the government of Oyo state, the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oyo State Traditional Council, and the people of Ibadanland and Oyo state over this gaping loss.

    According to the statement, President Tinubu grieved the passing of the Olubadan while simultaneously honoring his exceptional life dedicated to serving his people, the state, and the nation.

    He said: “His Imperial Majesty, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, was an exceptional king who used his ancestral stool in the service of humanity.

    “He was compassionate, courageous, and an unrelenting advocate of the pristine ideals of peace, honesty, and unity. His wise counsel will be sorely missed at this time in the life of our country.”

    President Tinubu urged all who are in mourning to find solace in the immortal legacies of the Olubadan, stating that the Olubadan lives eternally in his good deeds and the memories of everyone touched by the majesty of his essence.

    He prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed and comfort for those mourning this sad loss.

    The former governor of Oyo State and the Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Rashidi Ladoja on Friday, March 15, said that the people of Ibadan are already aware of who will succeed Oba Lekan Balogun as the next Olubadan of Ibadanland

    Following a private meeting of the Olubadan-in-Council convened at the Alalubosa residence of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the Ibadan chief affirmed that the city has already designated its next Olubadan, leaving no room for doubt.

    Indications have emerged on how the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun breathed his last on Thursday night.

    The incident happened barely 72 hours after the first class monarch celebrated two years on the throne.

    The monarch died by exactly 9:05pm at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan after a brief illness.

    He was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday morning on account of slight malaria fever.

    It was gathered the monarch had stayed indoors throughout Tuesday on account of the malaria fever, though he was hale and hearty on Monday.

    Sources hinted that the late Olubadan on Monday received few guests that paid him congratulatory visits on his second year anniversary.

    According to family sources, the late Olubadan would be laid to rest at his Aliiwo ancestral home by 4PM on Friday, March 15 based on Islamic rites.

    His last official outing was the Olubadan Advisory Council’s meeting which he presided over last Saturday where the decision to derobed Mogaji Akinsola, Olawale Oladoja was taken. 

    It was gathered the monarch, on Tuesday instructed the Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade to midwife a small committee to deliberate on last Friday’s decision on what should be the position of Ibadan Zone in the proposed newly reconstituted Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs. 

    The decision of the small committee was on Thursday ratified by the Olubadan Advisory Council at a meeting presided over by Otun Olubadan and the former governor of Oyo State, High Chief Rashidi Ladoja and was to be taken to the late Oba Balogun for his signature, Friday morning so as to meet the deadline for submission to the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters later in the day. 

    The late Olubadan would be remembered as the first most educated to have emerged as Ibadan monarch. 

    He was a British trained Ph.D holder, a former university lecturer, former member of management staff of Shell British Petroleum, former gubernatorial candidate of the defunct Nigeria People’s Party (NPP), former Senator and a successful business man. 

    He was survived by wives, children and grandchildren.

    Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Mohood Lekan Balogun is dead. He was 81.

    Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde announced the passing of the foremost monarch in a statement last night.

    Oba Balogun, who ascended the throne of his forebears on March 11, 2022, was the 42nd monarch in the ancient city.

    In the statement titled: “An Iroko has fallen”, the governor stated that Olubadan Balogun, joined his ancestors last night at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

    He described the late royal father as an epitome of royal excellence and a great achiever, who made great marks on Ibadanland in just a little over two years of his reign.

    The governor expressed his condolences to the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oyo State Traditional Council and the people of Ibadanland and Oyo State, praying to God to grant repose to the soul of the deceased monarch.

    The statement reads: “With total submission to the will of God, I announce the passing unto glory of our father, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Dr. Mohood Lekan Balogun, Alli Okunmade II, the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland.

    “A mighty Iroko has fallen; Oba Dr. Balogun has joined the ancestors.

    “In Kabiyesi, Ibadanland had a cosmopolitan and well-experienced Olubadan, who made indelible marks on the sands of history and achieved greatly within a short while.

    “On behalf of the Government and good People of Oyo State, I condole with the immediate family of the Oba Dr. Balogun, the Olubadan-in-Council, the Oyo State Traditional Council and the people of Ibadanland.

    “It is my prayer that God grants repose to the soul of our late monarch.”

    The statement was signed by Makinde’s Special Adviser (Media), Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

    The late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun will be buried according to Islamic rites on Friday, March 15, 2024.

    The family announced the burial will take place at his Aliiwo ancestral home in Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

    The late monarch, who reigned for two years, joined his ancestors at  81 on Thursday evening at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Oyo State, after a brief illness.

    The late monarch’s younger brother, who is the Baba-Kekere Olubadan, Kola Balogun, made the announcement on behalf of the family.

    It was contained in a statement by the deceased’s Personal Assistant (Media), Oladele Ogunsola.

    He said: “Oba Balogun would be buried at his Aliiwo ancestral home by 4pm on Friday (today), according to Islamic rites. The State Governor, Seyi Makinde, though already verbally informed, would be formally notified early this morning.”

    He added: “Aged 81, the late monarch was taken to the hospital Wednesday morning having stayed indoor throughout Tuesday on account of slight malaria fever, though, he was hale and hearty on Monday during which he personally received a few guests that paid him congratulatory visits on his second anniversary on that day.”
