JUST IN: Makinde, Alaafin, Olubadan hold close door meeting

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state on Monday had a brief closed door meeting with the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

The brief meeting held shortly after the governor signed the 2026 Appropriation Bill at an event which held at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governors office, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.

The meeting, which was observed to be unscheduled, held at the Coffee Room opposite the photo gallery stage of the Exco Chamber.

The details of the meeting remain unclear as at the time of this report.

It was observed that, shortly after the signing of the 2026 Appropriation Bill, the governor and the dignitaries who attended the event were on the way to take group photographs at the photo gallery stand when the Governor invited both the Alaafin and Olubadan into the coffee room.

The budget signing event was attended by traditional rulers, political office holders, lawmakers, the judiciary among other relevant stakeholders.

The meeting lasted barely 15mins, as other dignitaries waited patiently at the photo gallery awaiting the arrival of the governor and the monarch.

However, observers believed the meeting could be based on the need for unity and togetherness between the two first class monarchs.

The social media was recently enmeshed with reports of acrimony and class tussle between the foremost monarchs over perceived superiority tag.

Circular road committee visits Olubadan, seeks royal guidance on corridor dispute

The Circular Road Stakeholders Engagement Committee set up by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to address grievances arising from protests over the proposed corridor of the 110-kilometre Circular Road project has paid a courtesy visit to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.

The committee visited the monarch at the Oke Aremo Palace to brief him on its activities and seek royal guidance on how to effectively carry out its assignment.

Members of the committee include prominent Ibadan Mogajis (family heads), chairmen of the six local government areas through which the Circular Road passes—Oluyole, Ona Ara, Egbeda, Lagelu, Akinyele and Ido—representatives of relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), as well as officials of the Oyo State New Towns and Cities Development Authority (OYNTCDA).

They were received by Oba Ladoja in the company of the Asipa Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade, and other senior palace officials.

Introducing the mission of the committee, its chairman, Engr. Abduljelyl Karheem (Mogaji Adanla), said the committee was inaugurated following Governor Makinde’s pronouncement during his engagement with protesters against the Circular Road corridor on November 26, 2025.

According to him, the governor had promised to constitute a broad-based ad hoc committee to further engage affected communities, examine their grievances and advise the government based on its findings.

Karheem commended Oba Ladoja for his foresight in conceiving the Circular Road project and taking the initial step of acquiring land for it, noting that this vision laid the foundation for the significant progress being recorded under the Makinde administration.

Providing an update on the committee’s work, the Executive Adviser to the Governor on New Towns and Cities Development, Mrs Mofoluke Adebiyi, outlined the activities carried out so far.

She said the committee began with an inaugural meeting involving a 14-man team representing affected persons across the six LGAs, after which it embarked on on-the-spot assessments of impacted communities, engaging residents and noting community-specific concerns in relation to government policy.

Adebiyi disclosed that visits had already been conducted in Oluyole, Ona Ara, Akinyele and Ido local government areas, while visits to Egbeda and Lagelu were scheduled for later the same day.

In his remarks, Oba Ladoja recalled that during his tenure as Oyo State governor, his administration acquired 75 metres on each side of the Circular Road alignment and paid compensation to affected landowners.

He said Governor Makinde had since briefed him on the extension of the corridor to 500 metres by the immediate past administration, which he noted was the core issue behind the current agitation.

While acknowledging the immense socio-economic benefits of the Circular Road to Ibadan and Oyo State, the monarch stressed that those whose properties would be affected must be adequately and promptly compensated in line with prevailing economic realities.

Oba Ladoja also warned against the activities of land speculators along the Circular Road axis, urging OYNTCDA and relevant MDAs to protect unsuspecting members of the public from being exploited.

He further advised the state government to consider introducing a rail line running parallel to the Circular Road to complement the movement of goods to industrial hubs, as well as installing weighbridges to preserve the road’s lifespan.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Egbeda Local Government Area and Vice-Chairman of the committee, Hon. Sikiru Oyedele Sanda, praised Oba Ladoja for his enduring commitment to the development of Ibadanland and Oyo State, assuring the monarch that his counsel would guide the committee’s work.

Other committee members present included the Chairman of Lagelu LGA, Hon. Kamorudeen Mudashiru; Mogaji Olawale Oladoja (Mogaji Akinsola); Mogaji Adewale Badmus (Mogaji Itabigbo); and Mogaji Adewale Bankole (Mogaji Alago).

Also in attendance were officials of OYNTCDA, representatives of the Ministries of Lands, Housing and Urban Development; Works and Public Infrastructure; Justice; and the Office of the Executive Adviser to the Governor on Security.

Following the palace visit, the committee proceeded with its third batch of surveillance visits to Egbeda and Lagelu LGAs, where it engaged community members in areas including Fasade, Ayede, Ejioku, Idi-Igba/Aba Oyo and Eni-Oosa.

My jurisdiction limited to Ibadan LGs, says Olubadan

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has declared that his jurisdiction does not extend beyond the 11 local government councils of Oyo State and the about four million people residing there, as clearly stipulated in the Oyo State Chiefs Law and the Ibadan Chieftaincy Declaration.

Oba Ladoja stated this on Sunday while speaking at a coronation luncheon organised by the Ibadan Foundation to celebrate his ascension to the throne at Kakanfo Hotel, Ibadan.

The first-class monarch said he had enormous responsibilities within his domain and would not be distracted by issues outside his jurisdiction.

Addressing an audience of Ibadan leaders and dignitaries, including Asiwaju Bode Amao, Chief Bayo Oyero, Otun Balogun, Oba Kola Adegbola, and members of the Iyalode group, the Olubadan said he had a clear vision for managing the challenges facing Ibadan.

He recalled that during protests over the Circular Road project, aggrieved residents approached him first, adding that he promptly briefed Governor Seyi Makinde on the issue.

“We are confronted with land-grabbing challenges, which is why we set up an anti-land-grabbing committee. We are awaiting their report. However, I want to hint that land reform is already underway,” he said.

Oba Ladoja noted that the palace had effective channels for addressing security breaches within Ibadanland and had constituted the Olubadan Economic and Investment Committee to recommend ways of reviving moribund industries in the city.

“We want these industries to reopen for business so they can generate employment opportunities for our able-bodied youths,” he said.

He added that Ibadan inherited legacies of bravery, nobility, and hard work from its forefathers, stressing that such heritage should inspire progress rather than resignation to fate.

The monarch also recalled that when the Ooni of Ife conferred the chieftaincy title of Okanlomo Oodua on Engr Dotun Sanusi, many traditional rulers from Ibadan and across Oyo State attended in solidarity.

According to him, it was also an occasion during which one of Ibadan’s illustrious daughters, Chief Mrs Latinwo, was installed as Yeye Bobagunwa Oodua.

Governing a state is easier than being a monarch – Olubadan

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has said it is easier to serve as a governor than to function as a traditional ruler.

The monarch, who is also a former Governor of Oyo State, made the remark on Monday while receiving the Oniru of Iru, Lagos State, Oba Wasiu Lawal, at his Bodija residence in Ibadan.

Oba Ladoja explained that government officials have coercive powers and clearly defined structures for funding, unlike monarchs who operate without such advantages.

He added that the absence of a constitutional role for traditional rulers makes their responsibilities even more demanding despite their closeness to the grassroots.

He noted that the expectations of the people concerning the Olubadan stool are “very high,” given its wide jurisdiction, saying this requires thinking “outside the box” to meet the needs of the populace.

Olubadan also fondly recalled his years in Lagos, particularly on Lagos Island, describing them as memorable.

Earlier in the visit, the Oniru praised the virtues of the Olubadan and reflected on the unique challenges faced by former public office holders who later assume traditional roles.

Among those who joined the Olubadan to welcome the Oniru were Ekarun Balogun, High Chief Sharafadeen Alli, former Senate Leader, Agbaakin Olubadan, Chief Teslim Folarin, and several chiefs and aides accompanying the Lagos monarch.

Amid rising security challenges across the country, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has called on Yorubas and Nigerians in general to remain vigilant.

He made the appeal at the weekend in Ode-Omu, Osun State, during the annual Ode-Omu Day celebration—an event where residents review community progress and plan for future development.

In a statement by his media aide, Adeola Oloko, the Olubadan commended the community under the leadership of the Alaye Ode-Omu, Oba James Oladipupo, for their strong commitment to development.

He also assured that Ibadan would continue to support Ode-Omu’s growth, adding that next year, an illustrious son of the town and Parakoyi of Ibadanland, Chief Tunde Afolabi, would chair the event.

Earlier, former Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan, told guests that Ibadan warriors were responsible for settling Ode-Omu in its present location in 1909.

Prof. Adeyemo explained that the honorary degrees were awarded to acknowledge the recipients’ exceptional achievements, leadership, and contributions to society.

He also noted that the convocation coincided with the university’s 20th anniversary, marking two decades of academic development, scholarship, and innovation.

The Vice-Chancellor described the ceremony as a culmination of the graduands’ diligence and perseverance, highlighting the support provided by families, mentors, and the university community in their success.

He described it as a dual celebration: honouring the Enterprise Class of 2025 as they take their place in the world, and acknowledging the remarkable progress Lead City University has made over twenty years in shaping individuals who contribute meaningfully to society.

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted significant investments by the university, revealing that over N200 million has been committed to staff training, workshops, professional development programmes, and sponsorship for national and international conferences.

This, he said, has raised the quality of teaching and administration and enhanced the ability of the university’s staff to compete globally.

Addressing the graduands, Adeyemo urged them to uphold integrity, pursue excellence, embrace service, and equip themselves with emerging digital skills and innovative mindsets.

He encouraged them to become employers rather than mere job seekers, to champion peace, justice, and nation-building, and to contribute meaningfully to global development, noting that their education has prepared them for these responsibilities.

Earlier in the event, Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Gabriel Ogunmola thanked parents, guardians, and families of the graduands for their unwavering support, sacrifice, and commitment, which ensured the successful completion of their academic journeys.

Responding on behalf of the honorees, Mr. Olalekan Bello expressed profound gratitude for the recognition and described the institution as a true citadel of academic excellence, pledging their continued partnership and support.

He, however, urged the graduating students to strive for excellence and to embrace Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies in order to equip themselves for future challenges.
