Land dispute: Olubadan lifts ban on suspended Mogaji

The Olubadan of Ibadanland Oba Lekan Balogun on Monday lifted ban on the suspended Mogaji of Akinsola, Chief Olawale Oladoja, over land dispute in Akinsola village, Akinyele Local Government of Oyo State.

The suspension was lifted after a brief meeting at the Olubadan palace between Oladoja and some members of the Olubadan-in-Council.

Oladoja was suspended following controversial land dispute in Akinsola village after he clamped down on residents of the community, claiming he had court judgments to prove the land on which they built their houses was not legally sold to them.

Over 200 houses in the community were put under lock and key and red- marked to prove he was in charge.

The action threw residents out of their houses, leading some of them to sleep in the open throughout the night following which they protested to the Olubadan Palace.

But Oladoja apologised over the incident and promised to resolve the issue amicably with the affected residents.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Oladoja thanked family and friends for standing with him during the trial, adding that he would continue to uphold peace and tranguity of Ibadanland.

He however said his loyalty to Olubadan remained unshakeable, saying he was committed to the progress and development of Ibadanland and Oyo State in general.

You have big challenges ahead in power sector, Olubadan tells Adelabu

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, has charged the newly appointed minister of power, Adebayo Adelabu to be conscious of the enormity of the challenges lying ahead of him in the ministry described as very central to
    every household in the country.

Olubadan gave the charge on Friday, August 25, when he received Adelabu who was on a courtesy visit to his Alarere, Ibadan residence.

Adelabu, who came alongside some of his supporters, was received by the monarch and two of his advisory council members, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi and Oba Hamidu Ajibade, Ashipa and Ekerin Olubadan respectively.

Olubadan, who spoke through his Ashipa, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi said the critical and strategic role the ministry constitutes in the life of the country places a huge burden on Adelabu’s shoulder as the Minister.

He equally charged Adelabu to put it into his consciousness at all times that his record at the ministry would rub off on Ibadan, his place of birth and all the sons and daughters of Ibadan, both at home and in the diaspora would be looking unto him as their ambassador. “All of us will be praying for your success and we want you to remain our pride”, Olubadan added.

The minister, earlier in his presentation said he was aware of the task ahead of him and his posting to the ministry by President Bola Tinubu was deliberate based on and trust and confidence in his ability to deliver.

He maintained that with the support and prayer of everybody, he won’t let the President and the nation down.

Adelabu said: “I have come home to receive prayers from my father, the Olubadan of Ibadanland because, it is said that there’s no prayer that is as efficacious as parental prayers for a child. I decided to move round to thank all the critical stakeholders that made contributions to my emergence one way or the other before the job actually starts in earnest.

“I know it is not going to be a tea party and I’m ready for the challenge. Mr. President acknowledged that I have the strength and energy to run round which informed the posting. He said he won’t put me in a place where I can be effectively functioning, even in my bedroom because of my background as a banker/accountant, rather, he wants me to exert my energy and I’m ready to do my best.”

He disclosed that he’s determined not to fail in the ministry, not minding the legacies left behind by his predecessors.

He said: “I want to go into study of what has been happening on all the departments, why has people been failing and the fact that others had failed in the past doesn’t mean I must fail like them because I’m not them and they are not me.

“I plead with our people to stop negative confession about our situation generally in the country because there’s power on the tongue. Let people stop cursing the PHCN, rather, let’s be praying and saying positive things about our affairs. What we confess, we experience. Let’s be positive at all times and I’m sure we will have positive results”.

The minister also called on politicians generally to relegate politics to the background now and face governance stressing that there’s time for everything.

“There are lots to be done and Mr. President is in a hurry to make things work, yet the people themselves are impatient as well, so, we need not be bogged down with politics for now. Personally, this is the aspect (governance) of democracy that I love most and I’m throwing myself fully into it. With your ceaseless prayers, I’m confident of successful tenure.”

That same grace will sustain and grant you huge success on this exalted seat.”

He added: “To drive this vision, the roles of traditional rulers cannot be overemphasized and here I come to solicit Your Majesty’s understanding and support.

“Your Majesty, your roles are very critical to our new vision. Our officers will work closely with you, they will be coming to you from time to time for advice and information as the case may be. I implore Your Majesty to leave your doors open to them and together, with your cooperation and support, we will achieve our set objectives and goals of securing and protecting our dear country, Nigeria.”

  • How to end poverty, by Adams, Olubadan, others

AARE Onakakanfo of Yorubaland Iba Gani Adams, Olubadan of Ibadanland Oba Saliu Adetunji, Director General, Ekiti State Council of Arts and Culture Mr. Wale Ojo-Lanre and other eminent Nigerians have proffered an all-inclusive approach to solving the socio-economic challenges facing the people.

They spoke in their separate remarks at a lecture and award ceremony organised by a non-governmental organisation, Ceebee Gold Foundation International, in Ibadan on Sunday.

The Aare Onakakanfo said spirited individuals must collaborate with government at all levels by providing support to the less-privileged around them or backing non-governmental organisations established for the same purpose, if poverty must be tackled at the grassroots.

He, however, challenged the government at federal and state levels to come up with and operate economic policies that would make it easier for the masses to afford three square meals with better living conditions.

Chief Adams described the country’s economic situations as harsh as a result of the high unemployment rate, noting that the government at all levels must do something about it urgently for the situation to abate.

Aare Onakakanfo: “Many Nigerians live below one dollar per day. They cannot afford three square meals each day. The Federal Government and state government must rise to the situation.

“We realised that government cannot do everything and this is why non-governmental organisations, like Ceebee Gold Foundation, Gani Adams Foundation and others have been complementing the efforts of government by helping the underprivileged in the society.

“But government at all levels must fulfil their own parts. Jobs should be created. Infrastructural decadence should be fixed. Roads should be fixed.”

The Olubadan hailed Ceebee Gold Foundation for deeming it fit to locate its proposed vocational training centre in Ibadan despite the founder not been an indigene.

He prayed good success of the initiative, appealing to well-meaning individuals to give the NGO the needed support in the interest of the less-privileged in the society.

Ojo-Lanre, in his remarks, said: “It is important to know that everybody can help, irrespective of financial status. Some people want to help, but they don’t know how to start. Some may be thinking that they do not have enough to help the underprivileged in the society.

“But the truth is that you can start from your immediate community. You can adopt a neighbour of yours and empower him or her. We have varying capacities in rendering assistance.”

The Osi Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Otunba Gani Balogun, also said people should realise that they “don’t have to be a very rich person before you help”.

Highpoint of the event was the presentation of awards and titles to the Olubadan and the Aare Onakakanfo among other deserving individuals.

THE Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Saliu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso 1, yesterday described the late Olowo of Owo, Oba Folagbade Olateru-Olagbegi, as a great man, even in death.

In a statement issued by his Personal Assistant/Director of Media and Public Affairs,  Mr. Adeola Oloko, the monarch said the demise of the Olowo was very painful and difficult to bear.

The first class monarch noted that the death of the first class traditional ruler came as a rude shock to him.

The Olubadan, however, noted that he lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation.

He commiserated with the government and people of Ondo State and people of Owo town and his immediate family.

Oba Adetunji also prayed to God for the repose of his soul.

  • Your directive insincere, obas tell Olubadan

THE war of words between Ibadan first class monarch, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji and members of his Olubadan-in-council again intensified yesterday.

The Ibadan Obas, comprising members of the Olubadan-in-council and promoted Baales, kicked against the directive of the Olubadan, urging them to drop their crowns and return to the palace.

The monarchs described the directive as insincere and an aspersion on the review of the laws governing traditional institution in Oyo State.

The law, they claimed, approves their installation as beaded crown-wearing kings.

Oba Adetunji had in a reaction to the various accusations levelled against him by the obas asked the Olubadan-in-council members among them to remove their crowns and come back to the palace to perform their roles.

But, the obas, led by Otun Olubadan, Oba (Dr.) Lekan Balogun, faulted the highly referred monarch.

They insisted that none of the issues raised in their allegations against the “nefarious activities going on in his palace such as non-screening of prospective Mogajis (family heads) and Baales (village head) by the council before installation; the cash and carry manner by which people now get positions of Mogaji and Baale, leading to the appointment of more than one Mogaji from the same compound and relinquishing of the palace authority to ‘Olori’ (the wife of the monarch) among others have been answered.”

The obas maintained that events had overtaken the court judgment being referred to, noting that aside the fact that there’s an appeal pending on the same judgment, the issue of review of the traditional law in the state had since become a statewide one, encompassing Ibadan and other cities and towns which till now has not been disputed.

They also averred that the same reform, which conferred on them the new titles of his royal majesties and highnesses, also elevated the Olubadan to His Imperial Majesty from royal majesty, which the Olubadan proudly adorn.
