  • Olubadan warns land grabbers

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, Aje Ogungunniso 1, has declared land and boundary disputes as the most pressing challenge he is facing as a monarch.

The first class monarch, who received the Prof. TaoheedAdedoja-led Olubadan Advisory Committee at his Popoyemoja, Ibadan palace over the weekend warned land grabbers to steer clear of Ibadan in their own interests.

Oba Adetunji wondered why land disputes had assumed such a worrisome dimension in recent times.

“We have a Ghana-must-go bag full of land petitions in the palace. It is from this bag that we take out land petitions that we discuss on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays every week subject to availability of time.

“A couple of times, we have had to approach the National Archives,” he said.

According to him, almost every local government in the city and Ibadan metropolis is affected, making the application of stiffer penalty by the government against land trespass and defrauding of the unwary and innocent people imperative.

Adedoja, who was a former minister of Special Duties and Sports, congratulated Oba Adetunji on his first coronation anniversary.

He prayed to God to give him long life.

Mogaji Mogannna Lere Adigun, an engineer,  who prayed to God to grant the Olubadan more wisdom to discharge his responsibilities, stated that since the monarch inaugurated the advisory committee over a year ago, they had been working on various ideas that would make Oba Adetunji’s reign successful.

The committee’s deputy chairman, Niyi Ajewole, stated that a biography of the 41st Olubadan will soon be completed and publicly presented.

Olubadan: Court fixes Feb 24 for hearing

In Oyo State High Court in Ibadan at the weekend adjourned till February 24 the case by Seriki chiefs against the Olubadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

The chiefs, who include Adebayo Oyediji, Olalekan Fakunle, Rashidi Abinupagun and Gabriel Kofoworola, went to court to enforce the 1989 judgment that the Seriki line be included in the succession to  the Olubadan.

At the resumed hearing, their counsel, Abideen Adediran, urged the court to fix a date for hearing for the case instituted in 2007.

According to him, the case was adjourned at the last sitting at the instance of the defence counsel, Michael Lana, who was absent in court and sent no representative.

He said: “It is quite unfortunate that the defendant has continued to prolong this case.

“We started this case in 2007, which was 10 years ago and we are yet to move beyond this stage, what this means is that the defendant wants to delay the case as long as possible”.

Justice Oladiran Akintola said the court would give the defendant another chance, stating that rather than give a date for hearing, he would agree on a short date for mention of the case.

He adjourned the matter till February 24 for mention, noting whether or not the defendant appear on that day , the court would fix a date for hearing.

  • Baale Oloode sues Olubadan for removal

Baale Oloode sues Olubadan for removal

The Baale of Oloode in Oluyole Local Government of Oyo State, Chief Lukman Ilufemiloye Alao, has sued  the Olubadan, Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji, for his removal from office.

He is asking for N2million general damages for the pain, embarrassment and degradation he suffered for what he called his “unlawful deposition by Olubadan”.

The Baale, in a motion on notice by his counsel, Saani Oyedele, joined the Olubadan-in-council, Oluyole Local Government, and the new Baale,  Dauda Odeyemi, as co-defendants.

Alao claimed that the meeting held on January 9 was not properly constituted and that it breached all principles of fair hearing.

He urged the court to declare the  meeting ultra bires as he was not given the opportunity to defend himself.

Besides, he claimed Odeyemi  was not qualified to occupy the position as he was not a member of the Olode chieftaincy family.

The claimant said his purported deposition was unlawful, null and void, claiming the stool was not vacant and  he still remained the Baale.

Alao prayed the court to grant a perpetual injunction restraining Odeyemi from parading himself as the Baale.

In his statement of claim, Alao, who was installed the Baale on December 3, 2007, averred that the chieftaincy stool had been rotated between the Odegbero and  Aborisade families.

He further claimed that the father of the new Baale, the late Chief Olayiwola Odeyemi Ejo, his immediate predecessor, was removed in 2007  because he was not from the chieftaincy families.

He said Odeyemi  was from a small village, Ejo, which was about 10 kilometres from Oloode town.

No date has been fixed for the hearing.

In a telephone interview, Olubadan’s media aide Adeola Oloko said Alao has the right to go to court.

He added that the palace was yet to be served by the court bailiff.

The Olubadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, will set up a committee to look into the crisis rocking the Ibadan Market Traders Association, under the leadership of the Iyaloja, Chief Labake Lawal.
The monarch said the issue deserved thorough investigation.
He said a committee of three or four neutral people would soon be constituted.
According to him, an investigation would return peace to the market place and strengthen the unity and indivisibility of the traders.
Aggrieved parties are to submit their petitions and all relevant documents to the secretary to the Olubadan-in-Council.
The monarch replaced the embattled Baale Oloode in Oluyole Local Government, Luqman Alao, with Odeyemi Dauda Olayiwola. No reason was given for his removal.
The removal may not be unconnected to allegations of high-handedness and rituals, resulting in endless litigations and security harassment.
Despite the monarch’s plea that Alao should reconcile with his community, the efforts have not yielded positive dividends.

“Secondly, if there is no peace, nobody can live anywhere. For about two weeks ago, it pained me when I heard something like “One million boys. Please do something about them.
At this point, we can’t leave everything to the police. On this issue, you can relate with the governor and commissioner of police, call your chiefs, senior chiefs, Mogajis and even baales. These boys come from a compound in Ibadan, they are sons of known people in this town.
“We want peace in Ibadan. We must stop their reign of terror, appeal to them and esnure peace returns to Ibadan. We need to know their leaders, though, we can’t do this by force. Call all their leaders, appease them. Let them say whatever is their grievances. When they say it, you would then know how to resolve it.
