    • Bayelsa names civil servants quarters after ex-MILAD

To immortalise the memory of Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade (rtd), Bayelsa State Government at the weekend renamed its civil service staff quarters after him.

The pronouncement was made by Governor Duoye Diri, at the service of songs for the late three-time minister and former military administrator (MILAD) of Bayelsa State, held at St John’s Protestant Church, Bonny Cantonment, Victoria Island.

The Nation reports that Captain Olubolade, who died in May while playing Tennis in Apapa, Lagos, was the first MILAD of Bayelsa State and the civil service quarters were built by his administration.

Captain Olubolade, who joined politics after his retirement from the military, was appointed a minister three times- Federal Capital Territory (FCT); Special Duties, and Police Affairs.

His body, locked inside a chocolate brown casket with the Nigerian flag draped on it and carefully handled by pallbearers comprising Naval officers, was interred at the Vaults and Gardens in Ikoyi on Saturday afternoon.

Following his remarkable performance as MILAD and his close ties with the state decades afterwards, Bayelsa honoured him with a state burial, as Diri, members of the state executive council and lawmakers from the state House of Assembly attended the funeral rites in Lagos.

Speaking at the ceremonies, Governor Diri described Olubolade as an example of a true Nigerian who embodied unity, service, integrity and patriotism.

He recalled how the deceased officer saved many protesting youths from untimely death by exercising restraint even in the face of massive confrontation when the agitators moved into the Government House to free a detained militant.

“When I asked him why he did nothing despite being a military officer under a military regime, his response was that I did not want to waste innocent blood of my people. That’s the kind of man Captain Olubolade was. Despite being from Ekiti State, he loved and identified with us, we consider him our own very father and son of the Nigerian Delta and that is why for us, this is a state burial,” said Diri.

The governor also recalled how the late MILAD built key infrastructure, including Samson Siasia Stadium, the state’s first civil servants’ quarters, a functional motor park, and several internal roads.

Diri described him as a charismatic, forthright leader who served with dignity, passion and humanity, often returning to Yenagoa after leaving office and even celebrating his 70th birthday there.

He pledged to honour all private agreements he had with Captain Olubolade to his family, praying God to console them during their grieving moment.

Speaking at the funeral service on Saturday, Ekiti State Governor, Abiodun Oyebanji, urged Olubolade’s family to take solace in the exemplary life their patriarch lived, saying his legacy should make his children proud.

The governor encouraged the bereaved to read the many tributes written about Olubolade, noting that they highlight the values and achievements of “the kind of man God gave you as a father.” He appreciated Bayelsa State Government for honouring the memory of Olubolade, describing him as “one of our very best” whose service to the nation would remain an inspiration.

In his tribute, former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by his wife, Dame Patience, described Olubolade as a dedicated public servant, whose contributions to governance, business and community development were indelible.

Jonathan recalled his impactful roles in various capacities, noting that his work left “unsurpassable marks everywhere we went.”

The former President said the outpouring of respect and attendance at the funeral was a testament to Olubolade’s influence and the lives he touched.

Jonathan emphasised that his passing was a reminder of the transient nature of life and the need to continue building peace and progress in the society.

He prayed for God’s comfort for the bereaved family and called on Nigerians to honour Olubolade’s memory by upholding the values of service, unity and dedication to the common good.

In the same vein, Olubolade’s good friends for over 50 years, Rear Admirals John Jonah Rotimi Ademoletin (rtd), paid glowing tributes to the “man of many parts”, narrating how their parts crossed and his sterling qualities, virtues.

Ademoletin recalled how their bond started when they both got some sort of scholarship from the Western Region to go to the Nigerian Defence Academy.

“We became like brothers and remained inseparable throughout our careers,” he said.

He recounted how Olubolade persuaded him to abandon his medical studies to join the 16th Regular Course at the NDA, an advice that shaped his naval career.

“At the military school, we were both hockey players, often found in each other’s room despite being in different houses. We spent holidays together and shared many family milestones,” Ademoletin said.

He praised Olubolade as a determined, no-nonsense officer who excelled at whatever he set out to achieve, describing the late officer as “a man who lived a purposeful life and set a worthy example.”

Jonah in his tributes recounted how Olubolade taught him to drive in India, confidently pushing him onto the road at 100km/h within an hour of practice.

According to him, it was a moment that marked the beginning of their enduring friendship and mutual respect.

Jonah praised Olubolade’s leadership and problem-solving skills, recalling how, as MILAD, Olubolade called on him to oversee the transfer of boats from Port Harcourt during the asset-sharing exercise with Rivers State.

That task, Jonah said, taught him lessons that shaped his Naval career and opened his eyes to the limitless possibilities of the Nigerian environment, where even small workshops could deliver remarkable engineering solutions.

The retired admiral said his late friend was humorous, approachable and deeply committed to service.

He fondly remembered staying at Olubolade’s home in Aguda so they could share jokes, and expressed comfort in the belief that while they were saying goodbye for now, it was never goodbye forever.

“He was a friend, a brother, and a good man. We will miss him dearly,” added Jonah.

Chairman, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Godknows Igili, said Olubolade was a nobleman whose death came at a time he was most needed.

Igili described Olubolade as a man of many callings – sailor, politician and administrator- whose stern leadership, doggedness and warm nature would always be remembered.

While proudly Yoruba, PANDEF noted, he was also an “Ijaw man in spirit,” maintaining love and support for the people of Bayelsa State.

Other dignitaries at the funeral rites included former Ekiti governors, Adeniyi Adebayo and Kayode Fayemi; former Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba; a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode George; Hydrographer of the federation, Rear Admiral Ayodeji Olugbode; who represented the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command (WNC), Rear Admiral Michael Oamen, Chief of Training and Operations (CTOPs), Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira, and former FOC Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral S. Akinwande.

Diri, cabinet mourn Olubolade, former Bayelsa military administrator

Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri, has described as shocking the sudden demise of one of his predecessors, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade (rtd.).

Olubolade, who was the military administrator of the state from June 27, 1997, to July 9, 1998, died on Sunday, May 11.

Diri, who spoke during the 163rd state executive council session in Government House, Yenagoa, said the news of his death was received with profound sadness by the government and the people, considering Olubolade’s indelible contributions to the development of Bayelsa during the state’s formative years.

A minute’s silence was observed by the state cabinet in honour of the late former administrator.

The Bayelsa governor described Olubolade as selfless, an astute administrator, and a man of exceptional humility.

70th birthday: Jonathan, Diri, Diete-Spiff, military chiefs, others celebrate ex-Bayelsa MILAD Olubolade

Eminent Nigerians, at the weekend, celebrated former Military Administrator (MILAD) of Bayelsa State, Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade (COO) during his 70th birthday held in Yenagoa, capital of the South-South state.

At the three-day event, thousands of Bayelsans trooped out  to felicitate the  Ipoti-Ekiti-born retired officer for laying the foundation for Bayelsa’s development between 1997 and 1998.

Bayelsa was carved out of Rivers State by the late General Sani Abacha and Olubolade was appointed the Military Administrator (MILAD) in June 1997.

It is generally believed that from June 27, 1997 to July 9, 1998 when he governed the South-South state, he laid a solid foundation for the development of the Ijaw-populated state that successive governors built on.

So, the three-day event in Yenagoa was an opportunity for thousands of residents of the axis to show their appreciation.

From the Exco Chamber of the Government House to the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Samson Siasia Sports Complex and thanksgiving church service, Olubolade and his wife, Mrs. Mopelola Olubolade, decked in various Ijaw attires, were the cynosure of all eyes.

The Chief of Staff, Govt House, Yenagoa, Hon. Peter Pereotubo Akpe, Ph.D, ensured that all the events were memorable.

In fact, it was a pay-back time as former President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan; Governor Douye Diri, his wife, Dr. Gloria Diri; the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo; former Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd);  Amayanabo of Twon-Brass, King Alfred Diete-Spiff; Ibenanawei of Bomo Kingdom, King Joshua Igbugburu, and others led the series of tributes to celebrate Olubolade.

Also present at the event were the Hydrographer of the Nigerian Navy and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydrographic Agency,  Rear Admiral Ayodeji Olugbode;  Navy Captain Segun Noibi (rtd), Prof. Steve Azaiki,  Olubolade’s first child and daughter, Oluwayemisi;  her husband, Gabriel Akinadewo; Apostle Zilly Aggrey, Olubolade’s classmates at military school and Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), politicians, opinion leaders, members of Bayelsa State Cultural Troupe, entertainers and others.

In fact, throughout the event, Bayelsa literally stood still for the man described by Ewhrudjakpo as the COO (Chief Operating Officer) of Bayelsa “for laying a solid foundation for our development”.

All those present at the various events to mark the birthday of the septuagenarian, who was born on November 30, 1954,

    expressed their gratitude to him.

During the President Jonathan administration, Olubolade was also a Minister in three ministries – Special Duties, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Police Affairs.

He was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy in 1974, and attended courses including the Britannia Royal Naval College, UK in 1975, the Naval College of Engineering, India in 1979 and others.

During the birthday celebrations, all the projects he started and inaugurated during his tenure were highlighted in a special documentary and programme/brochure.

All venues used for the celebrations were also specially branded with various photographs of the septuagenarian.

    Everywhere was colourful.

    In a special tribute entitled

‘H.E. Olubolade At 70’, Diri said: “I am compelled to break the protocol of my annual leave to send warm greetings to a selfless leader, the former Military Administrator of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade (Rtd.) on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

“I extend my warmest felicitations to this highly disciplined and revered former Military Administrator on this milestone of attaining a platinum jubilee.

“His commitment and leadership in laying the foundation of development in our dear State is inspiring, and we use this occasion of his birth to celebrate him, his life and times, and his selfless service to Bayelsa State.

“Once again, happy birthday to our leader and a worthy citizen of this great land of Bayelsa. We pray God continue to keep you in sound health.

    “Nua sir! SDD.”

On his part,  Ewhrudjakpo said: “Last night, I joined the family, friends and well-wishers of the former military administrator of our dear State Bayelsa at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Yenagoa.

“The gathering of state actors and top government officials to celebrate His Excellency, Navy Captain, Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade,  was for his dedication to humanity and our dear State Bayelsa.

“The Chief Operating Officer COO, as I fondly call him, is a man of possibilities, integrity and character. His track record is distinguished and Bayelsa is what it is today because he extinguished the appetite for greed and corruption to nurture a new Bayelsa of his era even with the scarce resources.

“We are celebrating him because he is a sacrificial leader and one who we will refer to as an altruistic and audacious leader.

    “Happy 70th Birthday Sir”.

Jonathan described  Olubolade as a great man who Bayelsans are proud of.

Represented by his wife, Dame Patience, he lauded Olubolade for his development efforts in Bayelsa, which he said are still visible, saying he laid the foundation for the development of the 28-year-old state.

While wishing him many more celebrations in good health, Jonathan expressed appreciation to Diri for the peace and unity in the state being tonic to encourage development.

Dr. Gloria Diri noted that Bayelsans were happy with the role played by the celebrant in the development of the state, describing him as a son of the soil.

Responding, Olubolade said his love and appreciation for Bayelsa State made him to mark his 70th birthday in the state, describing Bayelsans as  loving people.

He recalled working with Jonathan whom he described as result oriented, saying he learnt so much from him and other Bayelsans he worked with.

He expressed gratitude to  Diri for celebrating him, saying he is a man of peace.

Olubolade also advised Nigerians to shun corruption, adding that he has adopted Bayelsa as his home.

He was given a standing ovation.

Responding to the applause, Olubolade said he was deeply grateful “for your presence at my 70th birthday celebration. Your love and friendship made this day unforgettable.

“I thank you for your thoughtful gifts, kind words and for taking the time to celebrate this special moment with my family”.

In his exhortation entitled  ‘While there is life’, Apostle Zilly Aggrey said there is power in hope, thus the living should be hopeful.

He prayed for the celebrant and those present.

The event at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, built by Olubolade, featured football match, athletics relays, cultural displays and choir ministration, amongst other activities.

Various branded gifts, food and drink were given to everybody present.

  • ‘Olubolade should wake up from his reverie’

‘Olubolade should wake up from his reverie’

The governorship ambition of former Minister of Police Affairs Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (rtd) has been described as “a drunken dream taken too far.”

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi’s campaign organisation told the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aspirant to wake up from his reverie and face the reality as regards the June 21 governorship election.

The organisation was reacting to Olubolade’s boast that he would defeat Fayemi at the poll.

In a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Dimeji Daniels, the organisation said: “It is unthinkable for someone who failed woefully as minister of Police Affairs to aspire to govern a progressive state as Ekiti. We all saw the rot at the Police College in Lagos and many more sad relics across the country that existed as police colleges under Olubolade’s charge as Police Affairs minister.

“It was right under Olubolade’s nose as Police Affairs minister that the most scandalous police pension scam was planned and executed. Is it not a funny and unrealistic dream for a man who cannot manage a ministry to want to govern a sophisticated state as Ekiti?

“When Olubolade says he is better equipped to be the governor of Ekiti, we must ask him, better equipped as what? Better equipped to replicate the rot that existed in police colleges under him in Ekiti or better equipped to replicate a fraud of the magnitude of the police pension scam in Ekiti?

“Ekiti people are happy with the achievements of the Fayemi administration and how the governor has taken the state from the cauldron of stagnancy, to which the PDP consigned it for the seven-and-a-half years that it ruled the state, to an enviable height of visible progress and development.”

After submitting his nomination form at the PDP Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, Olubolade said: “I will give the people of Ekiti joy and a new lease of life. Leadership is not by giving lectures; you have to identify with your people, do their wishes, carry them along and be transparent with their money.”

The Kayode Fayemi Campaign Organisation said: “Ekiti people have seen the kind of joy that Olubolade gives – the kind of joy that we saw in police colleges. That is the sorrowful joy that Olubolade wants to import here. Ekiti poeple will have nothing to do with that kind of joy since the Fayemi administration has given and continues to give them real joy through its people-centred projects.

“Olubolade cannot even win in Ipoti-Ekiti where he hails from because he has failed them. The Fayemi administration built the 5.3 kilometre Ipoti/Oke-Oro road and another 17 kilometre Ipoti/Ayetoro road. Ipoti High School and Ipoti Community Secondary School were renovated, while an upstairs was built at S.D.A Primary School. Boreholes were sunk to provide potable water for the people. One hundred and sixty-four elderly persons in Ipoti are benefiting from Social Security Scheme and 18 youths in Ipoti-Ekiti collect N10,000 monthly under the Ekiti State Volunteer Corps. The Fayemi administration is the first in the state to produce a compendium of its achievements in communities because the administration is confident that it has done well.”

Wondering why anyone would criticise a governor for delivering lectures, the organisation argued that people all over the world still draw inspiration from the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s speeches and lectures years after his death.

It said this did not stop the governor from touching the lives of his people positively as seen in his “achievements.”

The organisation said: “In fact, someone who is not in touch with the people cannot effectively espouse solutions to their problems as Fayemi continues to do. Fayemi has redefined governance by involving the masses in decision-making and budget-making. He goes round communities yearly to get their input into the budget for the coming year and to ask them what they want. This has consistently formed the fulcrum of budgets under the Fayemi administration.

“It is this all-inclusive approach to budget-making that is responsible for the tangible achievements Ekiti people can see and feel today. The PDP was not able to do this when it was in power because it lacks creativity and this is why it cannot appreciate brilliance and ingenuity.

“It is laughable for Olubolade to say he would domesticate the transformation agenda of the Jonathan Presidency in Ekiti. It simply means the domestication of the pension scam, Odua-gate, kerosine subsidy fraud, petroleum subsidy fraud, Oteh-gate and many more of the episodic corruption with which the Jonathan presidency is dogged. Ekiti people do not want to have anything to do with such transformation.

“We would have left Olubolade to his noise-making as he is a politician with no clout, but for the unsuspecting public outside Ekiti, who may think he is on ground here.”

  • I’ll defeat Fayemi, says Olubolade

    I’ll defeat Fayemi, says Olubolade

A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade, has said he will defeat Governor Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the June 21 election.

Olubolade, a former Minister of Police Affairs, spoke yesterday at the PDP national secretariat when he submitted his nomination form.

He said his experience and achievements as a military administrator of Bayelsa State and Police Affairs minister put him in good stead to take Ekiti State to “the next level.”

Olubolade said: “I will defeat Fayemi because I am better equipped for the job. My achievements as a military administrator of Bayelsa State; minister of Police Affairs; minister of Special Duties and minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) speak for me. I maintained a culture of transparency and accountability in the public positions I held and was not involved in any scandal.

“I will give the people of Ekiti joy and a new lease of life. Leadership is not by giving lectures; you have to identify with your people, do their wishes, carry them along and be transparent with their money. You must place everything on the table for them to see. They in turn will stand by you.”

Expressing his preference for the consensus option, Olubolade said he was ready for a primary election, if the party’s leadership insists on it.

He admitted his closeness to President Goodluck Jonathan, saying he learnt valuable lessons from his relationship with the President.

Olubolade said the “valuable lessons” would assist him in governing Ekiti State, adding: “Go and check the places I have worked in my life, I am free of crisis. I am free of corruption and that is what stands me out. If given the ticket, I am confident we will win the state for the PDP.”

  • Olubolade backs consensus

A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State and former Minister for Police Affairs, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (rtd), has backed the consensus option to pick the party’s flag bearer.

The party’s aspirants are meeting with the PDP national leadership to adopt one of them as the consensus candidate.

Former Governor Ayo Fayose, who is also an aspirant, insists on a primary election, but Olubolade said the PDP leadership has the final say.

He said: “Those canvassing the consensus option have their point. If the party says it wants to go a particular way and someone thinks otherwise, it is better we ask such a person to toe the party line.

“Personally, I subscribe to the idea of a consensus and I know it will work. The party is supreme. I am a disciplined person, so I subscribe myself to the decision of the party.”

Olubolade said having been in the Federal Executive Council (SEC), he is “fully equipped” to govern Ekiti.

He said the PDP has what it takes to defeat the incumbent, adding: “It is the incumbent that should be afraid because we have what it takes to unseat him.”

Olubolade warned the people against violence before, during and after the election. He said with his antecedents and credentials, it would be a disservice on his part not to contest the election.

The former minister, who picked his nomination form on Wednesday, dismissed reports that he was being backed by the Bayelsa State government.

According to him, his is open to support from any individual or group from any part of the country.

Olubolade said: “If people are supporting me in Bayelsa State, maybe they have read about what I did when I was the military administrator of the state and decided to support me. If that is the case, they are welcome. I welcome the support of people from all parts of the country.”

One of the aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the June 21 Ekiti State governorship election, Navy Capt. Caleb Olubolade (rtd), has declared his support for the consensus option to pick the party’s flag bearer.

The aspirants are currently meeting with the national leadership of the party, with the view to adopting one of them as consensus candidate, even as Mr. Ayo Fayose, who is also an aspirant in the race, is insisting on primaries.

Olubolade, however, said the leadership of the PDP would have the final say on the matter.

He said,” Those canvassing the consensus option consensus have their point. But if the party says it wants to go a particular way and someone thinks otherwise, it is better we ask such a person to toe the party line.

“Personally, I subscribe to the idea of a consensus and I know it will work. But the party is supreme. I am a disciplined person and so I subscribe myself to the decision of the party.”

The immediate past Police Affairs Minister said having been in the Federal Executive Council, he is fully equipped to govern Ekiti State.

According to him, the Ekiti PDP has what it takes to defeat the incumbent Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), adding that “it is the incumbent that should be afraid because we have what it takes to unseat him.”

Olubolade warned the people of the state against violence before, during and after the election.

He stated that with his antecedents and credentials, it would be a disservice on his part not to contest the election.

  • Oduah, Olubolade gone as Jonathan bows to pressure

Oduah, Olubolade gone as Jonathan bows to pressure

Unknown to many in his cabinet, President Goodluck Jonathan made up his mind on Monday to ask controversial Minister of Aviation Ms. Stella Oduah to “resign”, The Nation learnt yesterday.

The decision came after consultations with some statesmen, clerics, stakeholders and associates.

The exit of Oduah and three others – Police Affairs Minister Caleb Olubolade, Minister of Niger Delta Godsday Orubebe and Minister of State for Finance Yerima Ngama – is, however, likely to be a foreshadow of a major shake-up in the cabinet, including the swapping of portfolios by some ministers.

Besides the likely removal of five more ministers, it was gathered last night that the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, might be redeployed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Minister of Transport Idris Umar may go to the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

Ministers were jittery last night when they learnt of the impending shake-up.

Oduah’s and others’ exit was, however, with a tinge of drama as some of them queried why those they considered had worse performance were left in the cabinet.

One of the issues that dominated the consultations between the President and some stakeholders was his perceived refusal to act “decisively” on corruption-related matters.

The last of such consultations was a session in Abuja on Monday attended by Lagos preacher Tunde Bakare.

Pastor Bakare was Gen. Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate during the 2011 general elections.

Bakare, who towed the line of many clerics, insisted that Jonathan must show “practical demonstration” of his readiness to fight corruption to earn his support.

He said the President should act on the reports on aviation scandal and other corruption issues facing the government to win the confidence of more Nigerians.

It was gathered that the President wasted no time in dusting up the reports of the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation and the Administrative Panel headed by a former Head of the Civil the Service of the Federation, Alhaji Sali Bello.

Others on the panel were the National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd), and Air Vice Marshal Dick Iruenebere (rtd.) as members.

It was learnt that the two panels found Oduah guilty of infractions bordering on abuse of contract and procurement laws.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “All these people said while Nigerians might not see anything wrong with the personality of the President, they are unhappy with his slow attitude to glaring cases of corrupt practices by some cabinet members, including the N255million bulletproof cars’ scam.

“Pastor Tunde Bakare urged him to act ‘decisively’ on reports on investigation of some cases on his table.

“The President gave his word to these statesmen, clerics and associates that he would cleanse the cabinet.

“But to avoid a backlash on the career of such ministers, the President opted for soft-landing for the affected ministers by asking them to resign their appointments.”

It was gathered that Oduah’s case was complicated by her alleged unilateral removal of the desk of the State Security Service (SSS) from airports.

Security reports indicated that she was “indicted” for arrogating to herself the powers of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

“The battle with the SSS also convinced the President that it was time to ask the Minister of Aviation to go,” the source added.

Another source also alluded to last-minute battle by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim, to save Oduah’s job, based on what he described as “good performance”.

Another source said: “Anyim met with some top Presidency officials on why Oduah should be allowed to stay for some months to complete the ongoing reforms in the aviation sector.

“Some of the officials told Anyim that they could not intervene because the President was committed to his anti-corruption agenda and he had made up his mind to step on toes no matter whose ox is gored. Following the responses, Anyim realised that it was too late in the day to save Oduah.”

Regarding the three other ministers (Godsday Orubebe, Caleb Olubolade and Yerima Ngama, the source added: “It is only the case of Olubolade that could be linked to governorship pursuit in Ekiti State because the governorship race is still a year ahead in Delta and Yobe states.

“There are other ministers, like Nyesom Wike, with governorship ambition who are still in the cabinet. So, the President might have sacrificed Orubebe and Ngama for political exigencies.

Until they arrived for the Federal Executive Council meeting, neither Orubebe nor Ngama was prepared for resignation, a source said, adding: “I am aware that Orubebe has been having a cold war with the President’s political godfather, Chief Edwin Clark. So, he got it tactically wrong in his political Arithmetic.

“And for Ngama, his days were numbered since the President began a subtle political romance with Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, a former Chief Security Officer to the late ex-Head of State Gen. Sani Abacha. His exit might be part of a new political calculation to win Yobe State with Al-Mustapha as the arrowhead or the political leader in the state.”

There were indications last night that the exit of the four ministers would lead to more shake-up in the cabinet.

No fewer than five more ministers might be asked to resign this month, it was learnt.

The President has security reports on these ministers and their performance assessment records, according to a source, who added: “Do not forget that there is a benchmark which the President is using to assess the ministers”.

“Even some of the outgoing ministers queried why those with worse performance were still in the cabinet and they were asked to resign.

“This shake-up will be followed by the swapping of portfolios by some ministers. I think the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, might be redeployed to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, is expected to manage the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

“Also, Wike might be moved to another ministry. There is a recommendation to post Wike to the Ministry of Special Duties where he can have more time for local politics in Rivers State. The Minister of Women Affairs, Zainab Maina, might also be swapped.

“I think there is a plan to move Minister of Works Mike Onolememen to either Aviation or Housing and Urban Planning. His survival will depend on the disposition of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih.”

“In announcing the acceptance of their decision to participate further in the polity, the President thanked them very sincerely for the great job they have done in helping the government realise a number of the goals that have been achieved under the transformation agenda. The President believes that they have done so well for the country, they have done so well for this administration. He was generally happy with what they have done, particularly in their various sectors to help the administration realise the goals that we see today in the results that we have arrived at under the transformation programme of the government.

Olubolade and Orubebe, who were in the chamber when the FEC meeting started, left the villa before the meeting ended.
