    Court imprisons woman for laptop theft

    A 35-year-old woman, Nafisat Raji, was on Wednesday sentenced to six months imprisonment by an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court for stealing a HP laptop valued N45, 000.

    The convict had pleaded guilty to the offence and her counsel, Mr Najite Okobie, prayed the court to temper justice with mercy in sentencing the convict.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Olubukola Olowolagba, who sentenced Raji, however, gave her the option to pay a fine of N3, 000.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Oladoye Joshua, had told the court that the convict committed the offense on Aug. 8, at about 12:30p.m on Fayemi street, in Osogbo.

    Joshua said the convict stole the laptop belonging to one Akindele Deborah and a mobile phone owned by one Olabopo Mubarak.

    He said the offence contravened Sections 390(9) and is punishable under Section 383 and 412 of the Criminal Code cap 34 vol.11 Laws of Osun, 2003.

    An Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court in Osun on Thursday sentenced a 20-year-old Yusuf Mohammed to six months’ imprisonment for stealing aluminum window frames.

    Man jailed one year for dangerous driving

    A 30-year-old man, Usman Saidi, was on Wednesday sentenced to one year imprisonment for driving dangerously in Osogbo, Osun.

    Saidi was, however, given an option to pay a fine of N50, 000 after pleading guilty to the offence.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Olubukola Olowolagba, ordered that the convict should be kept in Ilesha Prisons until he paid the fine or served the jail term.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Ajayi, had told court that the convict committed the offense on July 10 along Ayetoro Olosedudu Lane in Osogbo.

    The convict had faced a two-count charge of dangerous driving and not having a valid driver’s licence.

    Ajayi said that the convict drove a Bajaj motorcycle with registration number QD 865 SGB in a dangerous manner and against road traffic laws without a valid driver’s licence.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Sections 21 (B) and 18(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Cap 113 Vol.5, Laws of Osun State, 2003.

    Counsel to the convict Mrs Abosede Aseyinka, prayed the court to temper Justice with mercy in sentencing the convict.

    Court remands two over alleged possession of Indian hemp, charms in Osun

    Two persons were on Wednesday remanded in custody at the Ilesa Prisons by an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court over the alleged possession of Cannabis sativa, otherwise known as Indian hemp, and some charms.

    He said the accused conspired between themselves to have in their possession unlawful substances such as Indian hemp and charms, which they believed could protect man from gunshot wounds.

    Oladoye said the offence committed contravened Sections 516, 213, and 430 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 34, Vol. 11, Laws of Osun, 2003.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge levelled against them.

    Counsel to the accused persons, Mr Najite Okobie, prayed the court to admit his clients to bail in the most liberal terms.

    The Magistrate, however, overruled the bail application and ordered the accused persons be kept in prison custody, till the next adjourned date of July 6, for mention.

  • Court grants N.2m bail to man accused of stealing TV set

    An Osogbo Magistrate’ s Court on Thursday  granted a 28-year-accused, Adebowale Tunde,  bail in the sum of N200,000 for allegedly stealing  a N54,000 television set.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Olubukola Olowolagba, in granting the bail  ordered the accused to produce two sureties in like sum.

    Olowolagba said the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and should show evidence of tax payment to Osun government.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Rasak Olaiwola, told the court that the accused was arraigned on a two-count charge of burglary and theft.

    Olaiwola alleged that the accused committed the offence  on April  11 at about 10:00 pm opposite Fakunle Comprehensive School in Osogbo.

    He alleged that  the accused  broke into Royale Net Points, an electronics store, and carted away one 26-inch  LG Plasma valued at  N54,000.

    The prosecutor  said the offence  contravened sections 413 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 vol. 11 Laws of Osun, 2004.

    The accused, who had no legal representation, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The magistrate adjourned the case till June 8 for hearing.
