Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has said the Federal Government raked in approximately N2.4 billion from marriage contracts through its marriage registry in 2024.

He also said the Federal Government planned to further strengthen the security around the nation’s borders to curtail the influx of irregular migrants.  Tunji-Ojo announced this while addressing reporters at an event with heads of agencies under the ministry yesterday in Abuja.

He added that marriage registry has become a substantial source of income for the ministry, recalling that in 2023, the ministry surpassed its projected revenue from marriage contracts, collecting over N892 million as of October 31 that year.

Tunji-Ojo also said the issuance of expatriate quotas contributed significantly to the ministry’s revenue.

The minister recalled that in 2023, the ministry generated over N1 billion from expatriate quota permits, surpassing the N600 million target by over N600 million.

    …urges MDAs to follow suit

…calls for emulation of budget performance

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has praised the outstanding budget performance of the Federal Ministry of Interior under the leadership of Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The party urged other Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to adopt similar strategies to enhance budget implementation.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the APC commended the Interior Ministry for surpassing its N2 billion Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) target for the 2024 fiscal year.

The ministry recorded an impressive remittance of over N5.6 billion to the federal treasury, despite operating with zero capital allocation.

“The bottom-to-top approach to budget implementation adopted by the Interior Ministry under Dr. Tunji-Ojo has eliminated wastages and prioritized value delivery. This approach underlines the importance of needs assessment in developing policies and projects that truly serve the interest of ordinary Nigerians”, the statement read.

The Rivers APC urged MDAs at all levels of government to scrutinize annual budgets more carefully, ensuring that public funds are channeled toward policies and projects that deliver tangible benefits to the people.

“We believe that adopting such a value delivery strategy will translate into workable, people-centered policy frameworks. The hard work and patriotism demonstrated by Dr. Tunji-Ojo should serve as an example for other public servants to save the nation from wastage on recurrent expenditures”, Nwauju emphasised.

The statement also called on Nigerians and the media to take greater interest in the budgeting process, particularly in tracking implementation and highlighting both achievements and lapses in public service.

“The media should not only report wastages and corrupt practices but also celebrate remarkable achievements like this,” the APC spokesperson added.

The party further appealed to the National Assembly to increase allocations for the Interior Ministry in the 2025 budget, arguing that the ministry’s stellar performance and its role in managing critical paramilitary agencies justify greater support.

“It would be a disservice to the nation if the National Assembly does not collaborate with the Interior Ministry to enhance its capacity. Overhead, personnel costs, and allocations for capital projects should be improved to sustain the ministry’s fantastic performance”, the statement declared.

The Rivers APC described the ministry’s achievement as a milestone worthy of national commendation, urging all stakeholders to support its efforts in addressing Nigeria’s internal security and governance challenges.

Passport scarcity: Minister orders reactivation of equipment in Atlanta, New York

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered the reactivation of broken-down equipment of the passport offices in Atlanta and New York cities.

Tunji Ojo said the order was necessary following the petition from Nigerians in the diaspora on the need to fix broken-down passport equipment in Atlanta and New York Consulates in the United States of America.

According to a statement from the minister’s media aide, Alao Babatunde, the minister has therefore directed the Nigeria Immigration Service to immediately deploy new printers to the passport offices in both cities.

These printers are ready for installation. This short-term solution aims to resolve the current challenge promptly, Babatunde said.

The statement reads:” The Minister hinted that there is a new solution being implemented as a long-term plan that will usher in a streamlined passport regime, enabling Nigerians to apply for their passports with more ease.

“The Ministry of Interior under the Minister is working round the clock, and none of the agencies is left behind. At the Nigeria Immigration Service, for instance, there has been an end-to-end automation of the passport application process and the introduction of the contactless application process, which has since been launched in Canada.

  • We executed multi billion projects with zero allocation in 2024, says Tunji-Ojo

We executed multi billion projects with zero allocation in 2024, says Tunji-Ojo

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed that the ministry successfully executed various multi-billion Naira capital projects in 2024, despite receiving zero capital allocation.

This achievement, he explained, was made possible by reviewing and enforcing existing contracts, compelling contractors to fulfill their obligations as stipulated in their agreements.

Speaking during the 2025 budget defense session before the National Assembly’s Joint Committee on Interior on Wednesday, Tunji-Ojo disclosed that some of the contracts dated as far back as 1999 had been abandoned by contractors, either in breach of contract terms or under Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or concession agreements.

“We were able to complete automation e-gates, the command and control center, resource centers, visa approval centers, solar farms, and other projects by thinking outside the box,” he said.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the Ministry achieved these milestones without incurring additional costs to the government.

“We didn’t spend a kobo of government money to do some of these things. What we did was avoid entering into new contracts. Instead, we reviewed existing ones and implemented value proposition management to ensure contractors fulfilled their obligations.

“For example, someone with a contract for issuing visa approval centers (VACs) hadn’t built a VAC center. We had to ensure they delivered. Another contractor providing border control solutions implemented the software component but failed to deliver the hardware, which is essential for e-gate solutions. I made it clear that contracts cannot be implemented partially—they must be executed holistically,” he said.

He described the accountability measures instituted to ensure compliance, highlighting the construction of a four-megawatt solar farm, valued at approximately $4 million, as an example.

He said,“We didn’t enter into new agreements or PPPs. We simply demanded that contractors fulfill their existing obligations. It’s about accountability and ensuring maximum value for Nigeria.”

The Minister credited his background as an IT consultant with over 20 years of experience for enabling him to design and oversee these solutions effectively.

“Most of these solutions were personally designed by me. I consulted directly, using my expertise to ensure that government gets what it deserves,” he said

Tunji-Ojo assured the Committee that no public funds were used for the commissioned projects, and no new contracts or concessions were signed.

He said, “Every solution was derived from existing contracts. Not one naira of public money was spent. It’s about ensuring Nigeria gains value from previously signed agreements.”

After presenting the proposed 2025 budget, Tunji-Ojo pledged to continue leveraging technology and reforms to address challenges and improve efficiency.

“In 2025, we will intensify our efforts. If contractors do not bring value to the government, they will be held accountable. We are not Father Christmas. PPPs exist because the government cannot fund everything. Profit-sharing without delivering infrastructure is callous, wicked, and unacceptable,” he said.

Following his presentation, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and the House of Representatives counterpart, Rep. Abdullahi Aliyu, commended the Minister for surpassing the 2024 revenue target despite the zero capital allocation.

However, after a committee member pointed out the omission of tender fees in the budget proposal, the Minister apologized and promised to provide the details promptly.

“Tunji-Ojo has demonstrated a commitment to justice that heals. Skill acquisition programs within correctional centers now equip inmates for self-reliance post-incarceration, embodying his vision for inclusive reforms.

“The Minister’s technological strides are equally noteworthy. The establishment of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex, a cutting-edge facility housing data centers, eGates, visa approval systems, and renewable energy solutions, underscores his resolve to position Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s technological landscape.

“His success stands as a testament to President Tinubu’s foresight in appointing him, showcasing the possibilities of transformative leadership when competence meets courage.”

JUST IN: Court orders Interior Minister, NIS to ensure passport issuance within six weeks

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Interior Minister, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to always ensure that applicants who meet all the requirements are issued international passports within six weeks and in compliance with Section 9(4) of the Immigration Act 2015.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order in a judgment on a fundamental rights enforcement suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/75/2023 filed by an aggrieved Nigerian, Benita Ngozi Ezumezu, with the NIS and the Interior Minister listed as respondents.

Benita claimed to have applied for Nigeria’s international passport and met all the requirements as of October 6, 2022, but the NIS failed to issue her the passport 14 weeks later.

In the judgment delivered on December 4, Justice Nwite rejected the respondents’ arguments, upheld the applicant’s claims, and granted all the reliefs sought by the applicant.

Justice Nwite, who awarded N3 million damages against the respondents and in favour of the applicant, declared that as of October 6, 2022, Benita had fulfilled all the requirements and was qualified to be issued a passport within six weeks.

The judge also declared that the respondents’ failure to issue the applicant passport 14 weeks after meeting all requirements violated Section 9(4) of the Immigration Act 2015 and the applicant’s right to freedom of movement.

He proceeded to issue an order “directing the first respondent (NIS) to issue the applicant (Benita) passport forthwith as stipulated in Section 9(4) of the Immigration Act 2015.”

Benita’s employer, Citizens’ Common (CC), a civil society group, expressed delight over the outcome of the case and commended the Judiciary for coming to the aid of a Nigerian whose right was violated.

CC’s Chief Executive, Olalekan Oshunkoya, who read a statement by his organization, said: “Our interest in Benita’s case is not just because she is a staff in our organization, but primarily because the service quality of the NIS has diminished to an all-time low in the last few years.

“The frustrating experiences of Nigerians, seeking to procure international passports in the hands of the NIS officials must be stopped.

“We understand that the service may have slightly improved in recent months under the current administration, however, we know that this case (Ezumezu’s case) highlights the plights of most Nigerians in the hands of many government ministries, departments and agencies when it comes to service delivery.

“After almost two years of litigation, we are glad that justice has been served in this matter. All the prayers sought in the case were granted by the judge.

“We commend the Judiciary for serving justice in this matter. This is a landmark judgement, asserting the right of every Nigerian to demand to be served right, especially when such service is tied to a fundamental right, such as freedom of movement.

“It should not be acceptable that services that can only be provided by the government remain poorly delivered without consequences.

“Majority of Nigerians continue to suffer irreparable loss for bad service quality from government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), and it is time to make things work.

“The award of the three million naira in general damages to the applicant is a reminder to every Nigerian that the law remains a shield against bad experiences and services from government ministries, departments, and agencies.

“We must sound the alarm that losses incurred in the process of poor service delivery can be remedied through the courts, and this is an example.

“It is also a reminder to public service providers that consequences exist for poor service delivery.”

Cabinet reshuffle: Igbo youths hail Tinubu for retaining Tunji-Ojo

The Coalition of Southeast Youths (CSEYD), a leading pan-Igbo political pressure group, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for retaining Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as Interior Minister.

The group had previously advocated for a cabinet reshuffle, specifically merging the Ministry of Police Affairs with the Ministry of Interior to enhance internal security and eliminate identity theft.

According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Coordinator of CSEYD, Wisdom Akunna, Tunji-Ojo’s leadership has transformed the Interior Ministry, with notable achievements in correctional centers, including improved aesthetics and inmate wellbeing.

The ministry has also recorded significant milestones, including a 50% increase in daily feeding allowance for inmates, clearance of fines and compensations worth #585million, and completion of ultra-modern factories in Borno and Abia states.

Additionally, the ministry has promoted over 60,000 paramilitary officers, established a functional pensions board, cleared a backlog of 204,333 passports, and developed state-of-the-art infrastructure at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) headquarters.

These accomplishments have strengthened national security, improved citizens’ confidence in the Immigration services, and eliminated identity theft.

The CSEYD has reiterated its call for President Tinubu to merge the Police Affairs ministry with the Interior Ministry to synchronize internal security architecture and increase budgetary allocations for greater productivity.

“We are however impressed with the fact that Mr President listened to the overwhelming opinion of Nigerians on the retention of Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as Interior Minister based on the transformative leadership and the cocktail of achievements recorded by that Ministry under his watch.

    “For example, the correctional centres across the country have recorded significant improvement in both aesthetics and inmate wellbeing which is a paradigm shift from punitive to holistic rehabilitation. Response to challenges around these custodial centres have received prompt, definite and wholehearted attention;

    “In August alone, an approval of a 50% increase in daily feeding allowance per inmate was achieved while orchestrating the clearance of fines and compensations worth #585million for 4,068 inmates across the country as evidence in the push to strengthen our criminal justice system;

    “This year under review, with strong commitments to partnerships entered into by the Ministry through the Nigeria Correctional Services, an ultra modern furniture factory was completed at Borno state while a garments and shoes factory has been completed at Abia State;

“The Interior Ministry has also ended years of stagnation in the paramilitary services under its supervision by ensuring the promotion of over 60,000 senior and junior officers across the Immigration, Civil Defence and Immigration services. Also a functional Pensions Board has been established aligning paramilitary salaries with those of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

“CSYED also notes that under the supervision of the Interior Ministry, there has been clearance of a backlog of 204,333 passports at the NIS, completion of state-of-the-art Data Center and Command and Control Center at the NIS headquarters for ease of visa and passport application, installation of E-gates at several airports across the country. All these red tires confidence in the Immigration services capability to meet citizens’ needs, fortifies national security and eliminates identity theft.

“We call on Mr President to once again reconsider our earlier recommendation for the merger of the Police Affairs ministry inorder to synchronize all our internal security architecture and improve on the budgetary allocations to the Interior Ministry inorder to ensure greater productivity”, the statement said.
