The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered an investigation into the alleged assault on a police officer by soldiers deployed for security duties in Mgbom N’Achara Community, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, said a video on some social media platforms had alleged that soldiers assaulted the police detective monitoring a traditional leadership election in the community on May 1.

According to her, the COAS has directed a thorough and transparent investigation into the allegation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the presence and conduct of the personnel at the said event.

“This is in line with the Nigerian Army’s commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and accountability in the discharge of its constitutional responsibilities.

Group to Army chief: save us from Imo deadly landmines

The Odinma Orsu Initiative (OOI) has urged the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Olufemi Oluyede, to deploy bomb experts in Orsu Ihiteukwa and Awo Idenmili in Imo State to clear land mines that have claimed the lives of servicemen and innocent civilians.

At a news conference in Lagos, the group sought the intervention of the Army chief to address the security crisis in Orsu Local Government Area.

The Chairman of OOI, Chief Chukwudi Okparaku, decried the lingering insecurity in Orsu, stating that for over four years, the area had been a hub of terrorism, resulting in the deaths of more than 5,000 people, including aged men, women, and children.

He attributed the crisis to the activities of criminal elements claiming allegiance to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

Okparaku traced the roots of the crisis to 2021, following the arrival of one  IPOB/ESN kingpin, who he claimed established a base in the Udeke Valley, which is 5,000 feet below sea level and located at Orsu Ihiteukwa.

He explained that the area was used as a base for attacks on Orsu and nearby communities.

According to him, after security raids, including a major operation in March  last year that destroyed their headquarters, some of the criminals remained active, planting land mines and carrying out other dangerous activities.

“These land mines, buried by the criminals, have turned Orsu Ihiteukwa and Awo Idenmili into death zones.

“We are appealing to the Chief of Army Staff to assist us by deploying bomb experts to remove these explosives and save lives,” he said.

The group highlighted the extensive destruction caused by the crisis, including the loss of public infrastructure, disbandment of local vigilance members, and the collapse of village administrations.

The group urged sustained military operations to permanently secure the Udeke Valley and other vulnerable areas.

It  also called for the provision of arms for local vigilance groups, surveillance equipment, and the rebuilding of critical infrastructure such as schools, clinics, and police stations.

Okparaku called for enhanced collaboration between Imo and Anambra States to address the movement of criminals across their borders.

The group expressed gratitude to security agencies, including the DSS, Nigerian Army, and Nigerian Civil Defence Corps, for their efforts so far.

  • Oil production must go up at all cost, says COAS

Oil production must go up at all cost, says COAS

    • Experts weigh in as oil prices edge higher

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has declared that oil production must continue to go up at all cost in the interest of the country’s economy.

He said the only way to improve the economy was to ensure sustained increase in oil production.

Oluyede told troops and officers to sustain their clampdown on all forms of illegal oil operations carried out in the Niger Delta by oil thieves. He spoke when he visited the Headquarters of the 6 Division in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in the company of other senior officers. He said if the country failed to make money from oil, the dollar would continue to rise

Meanwhile, global oil prices inched upward yesterday, rebounding slightly from earlier losses as an optimistic market outlook offered support despite subdued trading ahead of the Christmas holiday.

Brent crude futures rose by 42 cents, or 0.6 per cent, settling at $73.05 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained 38 cents, or 0.6 per cent, to reach $69.62 per barrel, according to Reuters.

Market analysts attributed the modest price gains to limited trading activity typical of the holiday season, with a stable short-term outlook.

“With reduced activity in the paper markets, participants are likely holding off until there is more clarity on 2024 and 2025 global oil balances,” FGE stated in a note.

The Army Chief, who participated in the decoration of 11 senior officers of the division with higher ranks, said if the dollars kept rising, everything would continue to be expensive in the country.

He told the troops not to obey any order that involved engaging in illegal activities and promised to improve the welfare of the troops.

Addressing the troops, he said: “There is no other way as it is now that the Dollar will come down if the government does not make money from oil because oil is the mainstay of the economy.

“So, if we are not making money from oil, the Dollars will keep on rising and that means food and everything will be expensive.  Nigeria is our country. We do not have any other country, so we must make Nigeria work.

“Why I am here this afternoon is to charge you because we have been given the responsibility to safeguard all oil infrastructure in Niger Delta and that we must do well.

If anybody tells you to go and do anything illegal, tell them that the Chief of Army Staff said that you should not do it.

“In the next one month, I must find changes here. Oil production must go up at all cost. I have come to talk to you as your father and as your leader.

“Now, as your father I will beg you to do what is correct. Now, as your leader, if you do not do what is correct I will deal with you decisively.

“So, if you don’t want to be in soup, just go and do your work and do it well. Like I told you, I know this environment very well; I was the GOC here, so there is nothing you can tell me. So go tell your colleagues that this is my message”.

Gen Oluyede said he would work hard to ensure improvement in the welfare of the troops in the next one year to enable them discharge their duties without worries.

He said he had discussed the predicament of the army with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu particularly in the areas of accommodation and kitting.

But he insisted that the troops must work harder to improve oil production to enable the government to earn money to take care of their welfare.

He said: “In the next one month there must be a remarkable difference here. I have come to give you a directive and those directives must be followed so that Nigeria can be better.

“There is no other way to earn money for Nigeria. And let me tell you, I have told Mr President about our predicament in the Army. Talking about accommodation, kitting, whatever. Where is the government going to get the money if they do not have money from oil? No, tell me, where else will they get the money?

“Now, if you do your part, I will do my part. In the next few weeks you will see that things will start changing. Even Ration Cash Allowance (RCA) we are working on so that we can have something better for you. And the same thing we are going to do with kitting and accommodation.

“There will be massive accommodation for you so that you can have places to live with your families. But if we do not make the government earn money, where will they get money? There is no other way.

“So, my message to you is for you to go back and tell your colleagues. We must make things better here”

FGE in the note added that supply and demand dynamics in December have provided a less bearish perspective, though the market remains vulnerable to disruptions.

“Given how short the paper market is on positioning, any unforeseen supply disruption could trigger upward price spikes,” the analysts cautioned.

Neil Crosby, assistant vice president of oil analytics at Sparta Commodities, pointed to evolving views regarding long-term oil supply balances.

He cited the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) latest short-term energy outlook, which predicts a draw in 2025 liquid balances despite anticipated increases in OPEC+ production.

“The consensus over 2025 liquid balances from major agencies is breaking down, indicating potential volatility,” Crosby remarked, suggesting this shift could reshape market trajectories in the coming months.

China, the world’s largest oil importer, added further optimism to the market with its announcement of a 3 trillion yuan ($411 billion) special Treasury bond issuance to boost its economy.

Analysts see this fiscal stimulus as a critical factor that could elevate energy demand in 2024.

“This move is likely to provide near-term support for WTI crude at around $67 per barrel,” Kelvin Wong, senior market analyst at OANDA, observed.

  • Reps screen Ag COAS for possible confirmation

Reps screen Ag COAS for possible confirmation

The House of Representatives Committee on Defence, on Wednesday in Abuja, began screening of the acting Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede for possible confirmation.

The Chairman of the committee Rep. Benson Babajimi (APC-Lagos state) said that the screening was a constitutional mandate of the house.

He said that proactive approaches to national security must be prioritised to address insecurity in the country.

Babajimi said that Nigeria continues to grapple with an evolving spectrum of security challenges, ranging from insurgency and banditry to communal clashes and cyber threats.

The lawmaker said that for over a decade, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have been at the forefront of responding to these challenges, launching numerous operations and providing vital support to internal security efforts.

“While we commend the significant successes recorded in recent years, it is clear that more work remains to be done to achieve sustainable peace across all regions of the country.

“The current dynamics of global security demand innovative and adaptive strategies. Threats are no longer confined to traditional battlefields; they now extend to cyberspace, economic domains and even the socio-political fabric of nations.

“In light of this, we must prioritise a forward-looking approach to national defence, ensuring that our military is well-equipped and adequately trained to address both conventional and emerging threats,” he said.

The chairman said that the task before committee is not only to assess the qualifications and vision of the nominee of Chief of Army Staff but also to establish a collaborative roadmap for tackling Nigeria’s security challenges.

Babajimi said that as a partner in the pursuit of a secure and prosperous Nigeria, the house  remained steadfast in its commitment to legislative oversight and support for the Armed Forces.

“We will continue to provide the necessary legal frameworks, advocate for adequate funding and monitor the implementation of appropriations to ensure accountability and transparency in military operations.

“To the nominee, this position carries immense responsibility. The Chief of Army Staff must lead with integrity, professionalism and a deep commitment to the protection of lives and property.

“If confirmed, you will be expected to foster synergy among security agencies, prioritise the welfare of troops and uphold the trust of Nigerians,” he said.

The chairman said that committee will ask questions that reflect the concerns of  constituents and the nation as a whole.

He said that the security environment in the country today required a united effort on the part of every Nigerian.

He  called for strong bilateral and multilateral alliances with neighbouring countries, as well as deep collaboration and joint efforts by the services and other security agencies.

“I am honoured this evening to be considered worthy to play a part in these efforts and I look forward to contributing my utmost best by working with the National Assembly and other stakeholders in bringing lasting peace to the length and breadth of our dear country Nigeria.

“I humbly appear before you today to be confirmed as the 24th Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army simply because tragedy befell our Army and Armed Force, and as a nation in total when the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja passed after a brief illness.

“I have served this great nation as an officer of the Nigerian Army for over 30 years. My exposure to national security issues at the junior, middle, and senior cadres of the military profession has prepared me adequately for the assignment I am being screened for here today.

“I see my nomination as the Chief of Army Staff as a privileged opportunity to be in the driver’s seat and bring about more positive changes to the Nigerian Army to enable it to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities.

“Thus, if confirmed by this joint committee and given the common mandate to lead the Nigerian Army during this period, I promise to do my best to justify the confidence imposed in me by the appointing authority,” he said.

Oluyede said that the security environment required a united effort on the part of every Nigerian.

    …says Army requires tactical aircrafts

Acting Chief of Army Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has vowed to bring lasting peace to Nigeria if confirmed in a substantive capacity.

Oluyede made this commitment on Wednesday during his screening by the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Defence and Army at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

He stressed that the security environment in the country today requires a united effort on the part of every Nigerian.

He also called for strong bilateral and multilateral alliances with neighbouring countries, as well as deep collaboration and joint efforts by the services and other security agencies.

He said: “I am honored this evening to be considered worthy to play a part in these efforts and I look forward to contributing my utmost best by working with the National Assembly and other stakeholders in bringing lasting peace to the length and breadth of our dear country Nigeria.

“I humbly appear before you today to be confirmed as the 24th Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army simply because tragedy befell our Army and Armed Force, and as a nation in total when the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja passed after a brief illness, although before his passing, I had been appointed by Mr. President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed, to act in his place pending his expected full recovery and resumption of duty as the Chief of Army Staff then.

“After Lieutenant General Lagbaja’s demise and state funeral on 15 November 2024, Mr. President, in his wisdom, found me worthy to fully continue the excellent job the Army has been doing here and get confirmed by the National Assembly.

“I have served this great nation as an officer of the Nigerian Army for over 30 years. My exposure to national security issues at the junior, middle, and senior cadres of the military profession has prepared me adequately for the assignment I am being screened for here today.

“In the past five years or thereabout, I have operated at the senior operational and management levels of the Nigerian Army and I have somewhat been part of the running of the service in its entirety.

“Thus, I cannot completely distance myself from the successes or setbacks of our great army in the past couple of years. However, I see my nomination as the Chief of Army Staff as a privileged opportunity to be in the driver’s seat and bring about more positive changes to the Nigerian Army to enable it to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities.

“Thus, if confirmed by this joint committee and given the common mandate to lead the Nigerian Army during this period, I promise to do my best to justify the confidence imposed in me by the appointing authority which is His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the confirming authority which is you members of the National Assembly and the generality of Nigerians.

“Let me underscore that the security environment will find ourselves as a nation requires a united effort on the part of every Nigerian. We also need strong bilateral and multilateral alliances between our country and our neighbors, as well as deep collaboration and joint efforts by the services and other security agencies.

“I am glad that this administration of His Excellency Bola Tinubu is on the right path to providing the enabling security environment for socioeconomic activities to thrive and restore a dear country to the path of pride and success,” he said.

He also said the Nigerian Army requires tactical aircrafts.

“Aircrafts have different strata of employment. We have the tactical and the strategic strata of employment. Now the air support that we require as an army is the one at the tactical level, whereby the aircraft should be ready at the force during operations, the combat operations, at the tactical level, while the air force, being the main players in that sphere, are to give us strategic cover. So we require those aircraft and the air wing to support our operations,” he said.

He said there is robust cooperation between the Armed Forces, adding that he intends to enhance this to ensure that Nigeria has better security and better socio economic development.

Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Hon Babajimi Benson, said Nigeria continues to grapple with an evolving spectrum of security challenges, ranging from insurgency and banditry to communal clashes and cyber threats.

He said for over a decade, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have been at the forefront of responding to these challenges, launching numerous operations and providing vital support to internal security efforts.

While commending the significant successes recorded in recent years, he pointed out that it is clear more work remains to be done to achieve sustainable peace across all regions of the country.

“The current dynamics of global security demand innovative and adaptive strategies. Threats are no longer confined to traditional battlefields; they now extend to cyberspace, economic domains and even the socio-political fabric of nations.

“In light of this, we must prioritize a forward-looking approach to national defence, ensuring that our military is well-equipped and adequately trained to address both conventional and emerging threats,” he said.

He said their task was not only to assess the qualifications and vision of the nominee for Chief of Army Staff but also to establish a collaborative roadmap for tackling Nigeria’s security challenges.

He said as a partner in the pursuit of a secure and prosperous Nigeria, the House remains steadfast in its commitment to legislative oversight and support for the Armed Forces.

Benson said the House will continue to provide the necessary legal frameworks, advocate for adequate funding and monitor the implementation of appropriations to ensure accountability and transparency in military operations.

He stressed that the position carries immense responsibility, hence the Chief of Army Staff must lead with integrity, professionalism and a deep commitment to the protection of lives and property.

“If confirmed, you will be expected to foster synergy among security agencies, prioritize the welfare of troops and uphold the trust of Nigerians. This committee will ask questions that reflect the concerns of our constituents and the nation as a whole. We urge you to provide comprehensive and candid responses to guide our deliberations.

“In closing, I wish the nominee the very best during this screening exercise. Your role is pivotal in Nigeria’s journey toward lasting peace and stability and we look forward to working with you to achieve this goal. “

Benson said the outcome of the screening exercise would be reviewed and presented to the House during plenary on Thursday.
