  • Court remands father for allegedly defiling daughter

    An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court Wednesday remanded a 38-year-old electrician, Chukwueke Ashiedu in Kirikiri prison for allegedly defiling his 17-year-old daughter (names withheld) over the last four years.

    The court ruled that Ashiedu would remain in prison pending advice of the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Ashiedu is facing a lone count charge of child defilement before Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat.

    Prosecuting Inspector Benson Emuerhi told the court that Ashiedu resident at Haruna area of Ikorodu committed the offence on November, 20, 2015 at his residence.

    Emuerhi alleged that the defendant had carnal knowledge of his 17 year-old daughter.

    He said the survivor informed her teacher, one Mrs. Caroline of her ordeal in the hands of her father and that the assault started four years ago.

    Emuerhi said the matter was later reported at the Gender Section of Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, by the survivor and her teacher.

    Chief Magistrate Sule-Amzat did not take the defendant’s plea after the charge was read.

    She ordered that he should be kept in Kirikiri Prisons.

    She also ordered the Police to send the duplicate of the file to the DPP for advice.

    She adjourned the case till April 25.

     

  • Apprentice steals employer’s goods worth N4.6million

    For allegedly stealing his employer’s bags of jeans trousers worth N4.6 million, a man, Chibike Dikebuenyi, was on Thursday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Dikebuenyi, 23, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of stealing.

    The accused committed the offence between Aug ust 20 and Sept ember 19 at Mandilas Market on Lagos Island, Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi said.

    Emuerhi alleged that the accused stole the jean trousers from Mr Kenechukwu Ikeanyionwu, his employer.

    He said the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested for further questioning.

    The offences contravened Section 287 (7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section provides a seven-year jail term for offenders.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    Ruling on the bail application of the accused, Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat granted him bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

    Sule-Amzat said the sureties should be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government and adjourned the case until  Dec ember 10.

  • Court grants three men bail over alleged burglary

    An Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday granted N300, 000 bail each to three job applicants charged with stealing property valued at N1.7 million.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Sule-Amzat, ordered the accused persons to produce two sureties each in like sum.

    Sule-Amzat said that the sureties must be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to Lagos State Government as part of the bail conditions.

    The accused, Israel Uwadiae, 20; Ogwugwu Godwin, 20; and Paul Okon, 28, whose residential addresses were not given, are standing trial on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, burglary and receiving of stolen properties.

    Earlier the prosecutor, Insp. Benson Emuerhi, said that the accused and others now at large, committed the offences at Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, at about 2.00a.m. on June 18.

    Emuerhi said that Uwadiae, Godwin and other accomplice, broke into a company, SLOT Nigeria Ltd. located at Lekki Phase 1.

    “They broke into the company using pliers and other dangerous weapons,” he said.

    Emuerhi listed the stolen items to include television sets, laptops, cell phones, accessories and cash, all valued at N1.7 million belonging to the complainant.

    “Okon received two stolen laptops valued at N350, 000 from Uwadiae and Godwin property of SLOT Company, knowing same to have been stolen.

    “The accused persons and others at large committed the offences.

    “The accused were apprehended by the police for further questioning,’’ Emuerhi said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 309, 328 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Section 328 provides a seven-year jail term for receiving stolen property.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty and their lawyer applied for bail on liberal terms.

    The case was adjourned until July 20 for mention.

  • Man stabs, robs Uber driver of N1.4m Toyota car

    A 24-year-old man, Lucky Friday, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly robbing an Uber driver of his Toyota Corolla car valued at N1.4 million after stabbing him on the stomach.

    Friday, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and armed robbery.

    Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi had told the court that the accused committed the offences with others still at large on March 16 at Ekingbon Estate in Lekki area of Lagos.

    He said the accused allegedly stabbed the complainant, Mr Godfrey Ovie, on the stomach with a dagger and robbed him of a Toyota Corolla car with registration no. FST 663 EZ valued at N1.4 million, property of the complainant, Alexander Abiola.

    The prosecutor said the accused was also armed with other dangerous weapons.

    “The complainant was attacked while driving the accused and his accomplices who had earlier boarded his car.

    “Suddenly the accused brought out a dagger and stabbed the complainant on the stomach and thereafter robbed him of the car.

    “He was arrested by some policemen from Ajah Police Division while trying to escape, while accomplices fled the scene in an unmarked motorcycle,” Emuerhi said.

    The offences contravened Sections 297 and 299 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat remanded the accused in prison and directed that the case file should be sent to the Lagos State
    Director of Public Prosecutions for advice.

    Sule-Amzat adjourned the case until Oct. 22.

  • Driver bolts with employer’s N5.4m valuables

    A 38-year-old driver, who allegedly stole from his employers’ cash and valuables worth N5.4 million, was
    on Friday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Police Prosecutor Benson Emuerhi told the court the accused committed the offences with others still at large on June 21 at Maryland,
    Ikeja.

    Emuerhi said the accused, who worked as a driver for the complainant, Mrs Ngozi Braide, allegedly stole gold jewellery and cash
    valued at N5.4 milion.

    He alleged that the accused was given the keys to the complainant’s house to grant access to the people who were coming to clean
    the house.

    “Braide gave Phillip the keys to her apartment so he could let the housekeepers have access to her apartment but when she got
    home, she noticed some of her property were missing.

    “The items stolen includes a 22 karat gold bangle, 22 karat chain, a set of diamond rings all valued at N3.6 million and 3,000 dollars
    (N1.8 million).

    “The accused, who had been working for the complainant for over three years, broke into her room and made away with the items.

    “He was, however, apprehended by the police,” Emuerhi said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 (&) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Section 287 (7) stipulates seven years jail term for offenders, while Section 411 provides
    two years.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    In her ruling, Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat granted the accused bail of N250, 000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

    Sule-Amzat said one of the sureties should be a blood relation of the accused and must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two
    years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The magistrate adjourned the case until Oct. 25 for trial.
