  • Ekiti Guber: Fayemi no threat to my ambition, says Olumilua

•Promises women 40 percent cabinet slot’

All Progressive Con-gress (APC) guberna-torial aspirant, Muyiwa Olumilua has said women will be offered 40 per cent representation as members of his cabinet when elected Governor of Ekiti state.

Olumilua, son of former Governor of old Ondo State, Bamidele Olumilua disclosed this during an interview.

He spoke to journalists before picking his nomination form at the headquarters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.

Olumilua who emphasized that he has what it takes to govern the state explained that women have the capacity often time to discharge responsibilities.

His words: “What we have scheduled now is to make 40 per cent, out of every 10 appointments, four will go to women because I strongly believe that what a man can do, a woman can do as well.” He added that, “during elections, the women do the voting more. They will stand in the sun, hold their children and ensure they vote. So at the end, why should the men take everything and give them just few handouts. Not equal but having something close to the men folks.”

Speaking of his experience, Olumilua said he has been in politics for 28 years, worked under the leadership of the former Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi as Senior Special Assistant on Project Monitoring and later Senior Special Assistant, Integration and Inter-governmental Relations and further got experience from the tutelage of his father, who was once the state governor.

He argued further that he joined politics before Fayemi, the current Minister of Mines and Steel.

“Fayemi was a sitting governor when Fayose came and defeated us. So it depends on the relationship you have with the grassroots. I have been with the grassroots; I am with them most times. Since we started our project in 2016, I have been living in Ekiti, that’s what our people want. That’s what our people like.”

Reacting to claims that his father’s reputation could galvanize his success during the poll, he noted that it would give him upper edge as he won’t have to be introduced to the

  • Olumilua: Fayose’s continuity agenda will fail

Olumilua: Fayose’s continuity agenda will fail

An all Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Mr. Muyiwa Olumilua, has predicted that Governor Ayo Fayose’s continuity agenda will  fail, because the governor has not lived up to the expectations of the people. He said Fayose therefore, cannot  install a successor.

Olumilua, son of former Governor Bamidele Olumilua, said  the state under Fayose lacked focus, adding that this is responsible for the high-level of poverty under the administration.

Speaking to reporters in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, the aspirant also accused Fayose who has endorsed his deputy, Prof Kolapo Olusola as his preferred candidate for the 2018 election of not doing enough in the areas of agriculture and youth empowerment, as witnessed under the past APC-led governments.

Olumilua said that  he expected the state to be making progress in rice production, like Kebbi, Ogun and Lagos States, because Ekiti has a comparative advantage in rice production, owing to its favourable climatic and soil conditions.

He added: “Agriculture is the largest employer of labour in Ekiti today, but what have we done about it? Israel is a desert, but it exports food. Before the advent of the APC at the federal level, Nigeria used to import food from there.

“Ekiti has one of the best climate in the world, so if  properly harnessed it can feed Africa.

“It is sad that nothing is propelling our economy, even foods are more expensive  in Ekiti, an agrarian environment,  than in Ibadan and Lagos.”

The aspirant said Ekiti core values of industry and scholarship are gradually being eroded. He added that the above anomaly will be addressed to make the state regain its lost glory.

Olumilua said the former First Lady, Mrs Bisi Fayemi, fought tooth and nail to give recognition to women and worked tirelessly to prevent violence against women through initiation of laws to give them freedom.

He added: “I am going to bridge that gender gap by giving 40 per cent of appointments to women, so that they can exhibit their potentials.”

On the anti-graft corruption war of the APC government, Olumilua urged President Muhammadu Buhari to be more proactive to ensure that looters have no breathing space under the APC-led Federal Government.

Olumilua also lauded  President Buhari for a splendid performance  in the area of loot recovery but added that corrupt individuals must be committed to jail  to serve as deterrent to others.

He said: “The reason why many Nigerians believe  the anti-corruption war is not working is because enough people have not been jailed for corrupt practices.

“By the time one sacred cow is jailed, others will sit up. I observed that the reason why the anti-corruption war has not gone down well with people is becauset  treasury looters  are still roaming the streets.”

  • Ekiti 2018: Our governorship ambition still alive, say Olumilua, Alabi

Two All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirants from Ikere-Ekiti in Ekiti State – Mr. Muyiwa Olumilua and Mr. Kola Alabi – have said their ambition for next year’s election is still on course.

They accused some people they called “fifth columnists” for the story on the alleged shortlisting of five governorship aspirants from Ikere from the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the governorship race by an interest group, Ikere Development Forum (IDF).

In a statement yesterday, Olumilua said those behind the story did not have the interest of Ikere community at heart.

He said the IDF had no influence over APC.

In a separate statement, Alabi also said the reported shortlisting of the five aspirants did not reflect IDF’s position on the governorship race.

He said: “At the meeting, a list of aspirants from Ikere, especially those who had been screened so far, was read out during the meeting. But this list must not be misconstrued as a shortlist of Ikere aspirants for the APC.

“This is but a mischievous manifestation of some do-or-die, bitter and perpetually failing politicians not associated with our esteemed IDF. Their sole aim is to heat up the polity unnecessarily in Ikere-Ekiti and other parts of Ekiti State.”

Olumilua said: “Being in attendance at the meeting, I want to point out that what was said emphatically by the President of IDF, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), was that only three aspirants – Dr. Oluyede, Chief Sesan Fatoba, and Funminiyi Afuye – showed up for the screening and that the committee found them fit and worthy to contest the governorship seat.

“This does not amount to shortlisting them, nor does it screen out the other aspirants. Consider the fact that Chief Olanipekun warned all the attendees at the meeting that deliberations within the IDF should not be leaked to outsiders, especially the press, due to the sensitive nature of what was discussed at the meeting.”

  • APC ‘ll sack PDP from power in Ekiti, says Olumilua

APC ‘ll sack PDP from power in Ekiti, says Olumilua

An All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Mr. Muyiwa Olumilua, has expressed confidence that his party will regain the governorship seat which it lost in the 2014 election.

Olumilua, who spoke at the weekend at Ikere-Ekiti, predicted that Governor Ayo Fayose and his “anointed” deputy governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, will suffer a “crushing defeat” in the 2018 governorship poll.

He said the 2018 governorship poll has presented the APC with a “very bright chance” of sacking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power, following alleged poor performance and hardship visited on the electorate by what he called the state’s ruling party’s “anti-people policies”.

Olumilua, who also expressed confidence that he would get APC’s governorship ticket at its primary, said he had designed an Eight-Point Agenda to turn around the fortunes of the state and bring about a better standard of living for the people.

The aspirant said the Eight-Point Agenda encompasses Development and Empowerment of the Youth, Development of Rural and Urban Areas Infrastructure, Education Sector Resuscitation and Advancement, Agriculture and Agro-Allied Industry and Maternal and General Healthcare.

The rest, he said, are: Bridging the Gender Gap, Innovation, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Growth in Technical Skills and Artisans’ Development.

  • Olumilua: I have what it takes to develop Ekiti

Olumilua: I have what it takes to develop Ekiti

Olumuyiwa Olumilua  is the son of Evangelist Bamidele Ishola Olumilua, former governor of Ondo State. The Ikere-Ekiti –born politician was Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Project Monitoring, Integration and Intergovernmental Relations to former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi. The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant spoke with Emmanuel Oladesu on his vision for the Fountain of Knowledge.

Why are you interested in governing Ekiti State?

Firstly, as an Ekiti man, I have keenly watched the economy, the social and political scenarios in the state, and I discovered that things are not as rosy as they should be. Secondly, as a bonafide politician and member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ekiti State Chapter, I need to contribute my quota to the development of the state, most especially in the areas where the state is lagging behind. In terms of infrastructure, good roads, equipped hospitals, tourism, qualitative education, etc, I believe I have what it takes to resuscitate the economy of the state. To take the educational level of our children to the highest echelon, and also to put food on the tables of our  people. With the inborn passion in me and the cooperation of the Ekiti people, I believe things will get better.

What do you intend to do differently, it elected in next year election?

Being an observer gives you the advantage of seeing things from a clearer perspective without the burden of bias. When you are on the hot seat, you tend to overlook some things that are crystal clear to someone looking critically, without the pressure of the occupier of the seat. I have keenly observed the governments of some truly great men; Governor Niyi Adebayo, Governor Ayo Fayose, Governor Segun Oni and Governor Kayode Fayemi, who happened to be my boss at that time. I have a compilation of their giant strides, their successes, and where people believed they could have done better. As an experienced politician who knows the how party should be run, party supremacy will be the hallmark of our administration. Presently, this does not exist. Hence, it is the party that gives birth to Governors, Governors are supposed to be answerable to their parties. This will surely be corrected by our administration to achieve the desired result, and make government closer to the grassroots.

How would you describe politics in Nigeria when your father was governor and now that you are an aspirant?

When my father was a governor and now that I am an aspirant, things are miles apart. Money has always been a factor in politics, but the use of money in determining candidates these days is totally obscene. Unfortunately, everybody is to blame for this; the leaders, my fellow politicians and the followers. It is really heart breaking. It has robbed the process of the ability of selecting deserving, good quality, well meaning aspirants.

Now, it is a game of how much money you can afford to spend on elections. Thus making it possible for charlatans, mediocres and criminals to throw their hats into the ring, and actually win elections. It is most unfortunate, but I believe that it is never too late to retrace our steps. There has to be reversal of this trend, or this country will be lost completely.

What is your advice to other aspirants and the people of Ekiti State?

I will advise other aspirants to do a soul search, and see if they truly have what it takes to rescue Ekiti State from the precipe we are dangling from. We need serious-minded people in government, not clowns.

Governance is serious business and should be left to serious-minded people. It involves the lives and well being of millions of people. It should not be joked with.

The good people of Ekiti State, should learn to discern between aspirants who mean well, and who have the capacity to actualize the “EKITI DREAM”, and those who are just along for the ride. They should not let cheap money and gifts of food sway their judgment.

As a youth, what plans do you have for Ekiti youths when you become governor?

Development and empowerment of the youth is at the core of the Dream Big Ekiti Agenda.

The need for youth empowerment is crucial to the future of Ekiti State. Our planned grogramme of action will improve their access to resources that will enhance their knowledge, skills and attitude.

The gains from these development and empowerment programs will result in financial literacy, citizen responsibility and duties, skill acquisition, as well as education, to propel the Ekiti youth to their rightful place as next generation leaders. Our planned line of action also includes making capital available to youths that have business ideas that are bankable.

It is insufficient to teach them skills without giving them the necessary support to bring the acquired skills to the point where they will solve the problem of crushing poverty within the state, and amongst the youths especially.

When you become governor, what becomes of the LCDA’s created by the Kayode Fayemi’s Administration?

We will by the grace of Almighty God, revisit the LCDA issue when we get to government, just like it is being operated in Lagos State.

The reason the present administration of Governor Ayodele Fayose jettisoned the LCDA is not far fetched, it is because he does not belong to our political party.

The LCDA’s in Lagos State have been enjoying patronage by successive governments, because the same political party that created them has been occupying the Governorship seat. We will sustain them, and make a success of the objective of their creation.

  • Upholding Ondo APC result negates democratic norm, say Atiku, Olumilua

Upholding Ondo APC result negates democratic norm, say Atiku, Olumilua

Former Vice President  Atiku Abubakar and a former old Ondo State Governor, Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua, yesterday said the All Progressives Congress (APC) should reconsider its decision to uphold the Ondo State governorship primary election.

Atiku, in a statement by his media office, said the party’s decision to jettison the recommendation of the Appeals Committee to cancel the election and conduct a fresh one was a negation of good democratic practice.

He said it was wrong for the National Working Committee (NWC) to disregard the recommendation of the panel, which found reasonable ground for the cancellation of the primary and the conduct of a fresh one.

Atiku urged the party leadership to always be guided by respect for the rules, fairness, equity, neutrality and democratic consensus.

Former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a statement, called for the resignation of National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who he accused of committing fraud in the Ondo APC governorship primary.

Atiku said it was imperative for the national leadership to live by the rules of internal democracy and respect for democratic consensus. “You cannot break your own rules without creating problems,” the former Vice President said.

According to him, since the APC found veritable reasons to review the outcome of the election and was able to establish valid grounds to cancel it and call for a fresh one, the decision to deviate from its own resolution is a negation of due process and an unfashionable hollow in democratic best practices.

“It was wrong for the APC to have set aside a resolution it had reached aimed at resolving the crisis in our party in Ondo State. It is a recipe for acrimony and division.”

He stressed that pretending a problem doesn’t exist would not make that problem go away, and advised the leadership to do a soul searching and address this problem.

Atiku challenged the party to promote the law and due process in the conduct of its affairs noting that they are germane to the party’s unity and stability.

He urged the aggrieved members of the APC to exercise restraint in seeking redress to the crisis, advising the leadership to retrace its steps and do the needful to restore confidence among the conflicting parties for the overall benefit of the ruling party.

Olumilua told reporters in Ekere-Ekiti that only the cancellation of the controversial September 3 primary allegedly won by Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu could guarantee victory for the APC in the November 26  election.

Olumilua warned his party against rebuffing calls for a fresh, transparent and credible primary acceptable to leaders and members of the party and the electorate.

He explained that the non-conduct of a fresh primary in line with globally-acceptable democratic practices would affect the unity of the party seen as a better alternative “by the good people of Ondo State.”

The former governor called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the feud between Tinubu and Odigie-Oyegun in the interest of cohesion and harmony.

Olumilua said: “The protest, and the kind of information that we received after the primary, is unpalatable and does not portray our party in good light. It does not say well of us as a party that is trying to instill discipline. With this development, what are we instilling?

“What are we teaching then? What lesson or impression are we creating? Definitely, it is a negative impression that sends bad signal about us and our party.

“We must urgently correct it now, and conduct a fresh primary for the governorship. Otherwise our party may be heading for failure at the poll, and it will not only stop at this, it will also affect our popularity, and it will affect the unity of our members.”

The elder statesman described the dispute between Tinubu and Odigie-Oyegun as “unfortunate”, saying it could affect the party, which is just finding its feet at governance.

Olumila said: “When two elephants fight, the grass suffers. No doubt, this misunderstanding has further caused a lot of damage within our party, and it would continue to polarise the party, and could cause the early disintegration of the party if care is not taken.”

Olumilua urged the President “to intervene speedily before it is too late” because fifth columnists could also hijack the situation to cause trouble.

  • Controversy in Ekiti over Olumilua ’s arrest

The intra-party crisis rocking the Ekiti State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) took a dramatic dimension on Tuesday with the arrest of a former governor of old Ondo State, Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua.

Olumilua was arrested at his Ikere Ekiti country home and whisked to the state police command headquarters, Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

The supporters of the former governor claimed that he was arrested based on a petition forwarded to the Police by the APC Secretary in the state, Paul Omotoso, accusing Olumilua of holding a “subversive party meeting in his house where he nominated somebody as minister without consulting the party executive committee.”

But Omotoso in a telephone chat with our reporter denied the arrest of Olumilua.

The party scribe said: “He wasn’t arrested, maybe the police invited him.”

[ad id=”403656”]Repeated calls to Olumilua’s mobile phone were not answered and text messages sent to him were not replied at the time of filing this report.

But an interest group in the Ekiti APC, the Action Group, condemned the alleged arrest by the police, describing it as “intolerable abuse of phantom power.”

In a statement issued by its spokesman, Segun Dipe, the Action Group said Olumilua whom it described as an APC member, an elder and a leader of the party did not deserve to be treated that way.

Dipe said: “The offence allegedly committed by Evangelist Olumilua as enumerated in the petition written by Barr. Omotoso are that he organized a ‘subversive’ party meeting in his house and he nominated somebody and a minister without consulting with the party executive committee. Facts available have revealed that Barr. Omotosho acted on the instruction of a former governor of the state.

“It befuddles us that it is in this age and time, when the rule of law holds sway, that Barr. Omotosho and his co-travellers would embark on such desperation journey to nowhere, insulting the personality of Olumulia and by extension, APC in Ekiti State and Nigeria with such baseless allegation.

“Assuming they did so out of ignorance or blind loyalty to somebody, the police should have been well-informed and more professional in their handling of the matter.

“It is not only annoying, but at the same time laughable. Evangelist Olumilua could not have been holding an illegal meeting in his own house against his own party.”

  • Tinubu, Mimiko, Olumilua pay tributes to Adegbonmire

Prominent politicians yesterday paid tributes to the late leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Ondo State, Chief Wumi Adegbonmire, at the Ondo Cultural Centre.

They included party loyalists, scholars, former governors and traditional rulers, among others.

ACN National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in a letter to the family, described the late Adegbonmire as “one of Nigeria’s most consistent progressive leaders, who made invaluable contribtuions to the evolution of politics in the Southwest.

He said the late Asiwaju of Akureland was “dependable and did not predicate his progressive ideology simply on his closeness to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo or Papa Adekunle Ajasin”.

Tinubu said: “It is sad that this rare tribe of committed, sincere, passionate and vastly experienced politicians are dimnishing at a time when Nigeria is sinking deeper into the abyss.

“Chief Adegbonmire taught us never to despair. He inspired us never to give up hope. He challenged us never to relent in the struggle. He admonished us never to be intimidated by falsehood and blackmail. He encouraged us to believe that light will ultimately triumph over darkness and truth over falsehood.”

Former Governor of the old Ondo State Evang. Bamidele Olumilua said the late Adegbonmire lived a life worthy of emulation.

He described the late ACN leader as a man of great conviction and character.

Olumilua said: “Adegbonmire always stood by his words not minding what people are saying. He was a respectable man, who never smeared other people’s image.

“He knew Akure people were members of the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) but came to the Action Group (AG) because he believed in the late Awolowo’s political ideology.

“Since then, he remained committed to sustaining the late Awolowo’s legacies. He is a real progressive, who had been moving along with the transformation agenda of the progressive party. He joined ACN because ACN is the grandson of Awolowo’s party.”

Governor Olusegun Mimiko, who was represented by his Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Sola Ebiseni, described the late ACN leader as a political ideologist.

Mimiko said the late columnist’s write-ups contributed immensely to the growth of democracy.

He said the late politician was chosen as the Asiwaju of Akure because of his selfless service to humanity.

Former Minister of Transport Ebenezer Babatope said:

“Even though the late Adegbonmire was an ACN member, loyalists of other parties respected him.”

The ACN’s candidate in the last Ondo governorship election, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), described Adegbonmire as “a fine gentleman of calm and rational disposition”.

Akeredolu said: “He was a very remarkable personality; principled and cultured. He eptimosed everything one looked for in a leader – honesty, integrity, probity, assiduity, sense of direction and purpose. It is sad to lose such a good man. We would love to have him with us for a few more years, but that is beyond us.

“Our late papa led a sublime life and left indelible imprints on everything he did. He served this state and nation faithfully. A titan is gone, but as Longfellow said, ‘Dust, thou art to dust returneth was not spoken of the soul’,”.

Also at the event were the Deji of Akure, Oba Adebiyi Adesida; ACN deputy governorship candidate Dr. Paul Akintelure; Prince Olu Adegboro; Mr. Ifedayo Abegunde; Mrs. Adetutu Adefarati; Mr. Diran Iyatan; Mr. Sola Iji; Mr. Ade Adetimehin and Mr. Adegboyega Adedipe, among others.
