First Lady commissions 100-bed mother and child hospital in Imo

Maternal and child healthcare in Imo State has received a major boost as Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, commissioned a 100-bed Mother and Child Centre at Awo-Omamma General Hospital, near Owerri.

The hospital, constructed and equipped by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs), was inaugurated on her behalf by the Wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by Special Assistant on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communication at the OSSAP-SDGs, Desmond Utomwen, the First Lady described the centre as “a symbol of renewed hope” and a key step toward achieving health-related SDGs by 2030.

“This facility reflects President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to quality healthcare, especially for women and children,” Mrs Shettima said, urging local communities to utilise and safeguard the hospital.

Governor Hope Uzodimma hailed the intervention as timely, praising the First Lady’s advocacy for women and the vulnerable.

“This is a significant addition to our healthcare infrastructure and will help reduce maternal and child mortality in Imo,” he said.

The facility, named the Senator Oluremi Tinubu Mother and Child Centre, features an operating theatre, ICU units, consultation rooms, a laboratory, and modern delivery equipment.

Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, said the centre is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare access at the grassroots.

She stressed the need for improved antenatal attendance and child immunisation, referencing findings from the 2024 Nigeria SDGs progress report.

She also announced a women’s empowerment programme set for June in the South-East.

The Imo state government provided land for the project, highlighting effective federal-state collaboration in driving SDG-aligned development.

    By Ifeatu Agbu

Otuasega, a rural community in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, was agog on April 3 when the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, launched a free medical outreach and inaugurated the upgraded Cottage Hospital and Community Secondary School there.

The projects were undertaken by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in partnership with Mrs Tinubu’s pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI). They are to enhance healthcare delivery and education in the state and other parts of Niger Delta.

The First Lady, assisted by Minister of Regional Development, Mr Abubakar Momoh, Governor Douye Diri, and the NDDC team led by its Chairman, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, restated the Federal Government’s commitment to provide accessible and affordable health care to rural communities in Niger Delta and other parts of the country.

The First Lady said NDDC’s 2025 free medical outreach and the donation of medical equipment to some were part of an health insurance scheme designed to cover rural communities in Niger Delta and grant many families access to affordable and reliable medical care.

She hailed NDDC for recognising that health and education were essential pillars of development, saying: “As an educationist, I am glad that NDDC recognises education as a vital pillar of development. That is why distributing 32,000 school desks and benches to public schools will ensure children learn in a more comfortable and conducive environment”.

Urging the people to take advantage of NDDC’s interventions, Mrs Tinubu said: “To the good people of Bayelsa State and the entire Niger Delta Region, this is your programme. I encourage you to… safeguard them and continue to support efforts to enhance development in your communities”.

Some of the projects she commissioned were 11 ambulances and personal protective gear for selected hospitals in the region, a cottage hospital, a health insurance scheme for rural dwellers and a community secondary school. She also oversaw the distribution of textbooks, school benches and desks.

Earlier, at a meeting with members of Bayelsa State Traditional Rulers Council, the First Lady emphasised the importance of leaders prioritising the people’s needs and solicited their support for RHI activities.

Mrs Tinubu recalled her first visit to the state and all that NDDC and RHI have been doing to better the lot of the people in Niger Delta and other parts of the country.

“The NDDC/RHI collaboration began in 2024 to provide more support in critical areas of development by empowering communities and improving the quality of lives in Niger Delta in line with our Renewed Hope Initiative modelled towards a better life for families”, she said.

The First Lady added: “Today, the medical outreach programme which I was told is conducted quarterly is aimed at delivering special health services directly to the communities; it will address common health issues, provide preventive care and raise awareness about health issues affecting rural residents, particularly in the area of maternal and child health”.

Diri praised NDDC for its commitment to improving the region, while noting the projects the Federal Government is executing in the state, especially the linking of roads to some coastal Communities.

He called for collaboration between interventionist agencies and governors of their regions to avoid the duplication of projects.

Momoh said the collaboration between NDDC and RHI represented a game-changing partnership, explaining that “the NDDC is setting standards for good performance in the region.”

NDDC Managing Director, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, said the essence of the partnership between RHI and NDDC is to ensure that the agency delivered  dividends of development in health, education and other social services to women, children and the youth in the region.

He said the partnership was a reflection of the government’s desire to transform Niger Delta into a zone of peace and development.

He said: “As we begin the celebration of 25 years of NDDC, we need more of these strategic and coordinated development programmes to continue our life-saving interventions.”

First Lady calls for recommitment in Nigeria’s fight against malaria

As Nigeria joins the global community to mark World Malaria Day 2025, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has issued a passionate call for a renewed commitment to the fight against the deadly disease, which remains one of the nation’s most pressing health emergencies.

In a message released yesterday, Senator Tinubu urged all government agencies, private sector partners, NGOs, health workers, and community leaders to “recommit to the fight against malaria with urgency and resolve. Malaria ends with us, with our voices, our choices and our actions.”

The First Lady’s statement aligns with the 2025 World Malaria Day theme: “Malaria Ends With Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite.”

The theme, she noted, is both a call to action and a message of hope—urging Nigerians to renew investments in life-saving interventions, intensify awareness campaigns, and revive the collective will needed to eradicate the disease.

Senator Tinubu emphasised that beyond medical interventions, environmental responsibility plays a critical role in combating the spread of malaria.

“We should also ensure that our environment and surroundings are clean and free of stagnant water that is breeding ground for mosquitoes,” she said.

Highlighting the scale of the challenge, the First Lady noted that Nigeria bears the highest burden of malaria globally, a situation she described not just as a public health issue, but a national emergency.

“We must continue to work hard to reverse this trend,” she said.

World Malaria Day is observed annually on April 25 to raise awareness about the disease and mobilize action toward its control and eventual elimination.

Malaria continues to claim hundreds of thousands of lives across Africa each year with Nigeria accounting for a significant percentage of global cases and deaths.

Since assuming office, the Tinubu administration has reiterated its commitment to improving public health outcomes, with special focus on diseases like malaria that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, including children and pregnant women.

First Lady flags off “free to shine” triple elimination campaign in Southwest

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has launched the “Free to Shine” Triple Elimination Campaign in the Southwest region, making it the fifth geopolitical zone to join the nationwide effort to eradicate mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS, Syphilis and Hepatitis by 2030.

The flag-off ceremony took place in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, where stakeholders from across the public health sector, government institutions, and international organizations gathered in support of the initiative.

Tinubu emphasised the importance of inclusivity and youth participation in achieving the goals of the campaign, while also calling for a culture shift that eliminates the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.

According to a statement by her Senior Special Assistant on Media Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady said: “To our dear children and youth, this campaign cannot succeed without your involvement. You represent our future generation; however, your age group is one of the most vulnerable. Please take care and protect yourselves”.

The First Lady praised the courage of individuals living with HIV/AIDS who shared their testimonies during the event, saying their stories serve as “a powerful reminder of resilience and hope,” and encourage others to seek help without fear or shame.

She commended the efforts of healthcare professionals and public health agencies such as the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), the National AIDS and STDs Control Programme (NASCP), and their global partners including WHO, UNAIDS, UNICEF, UNDP, PEPFAR, and the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF).

“These institutions and agencies have remained committed to combating the spread of these diseases, and today’s launch further strengthens our resolve to win this fight together,” she added.

A key focus of the campaign is to increase access to HIV testing and counselling, particularly for pregnant women, young people, and rural communities.

Senator Tinubu urged traditional and faith-based institutions to support these efforts by promoting preventive healthcare practices and encouraging testing without fear of discrimination.

Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in his remarks, pledged the state’s commitment to prioritizing healthcare funding to align with the goals of the campaign.

He acknowledged the financial challenges posed by recent global funding cuts but stressed that the state would reallocate resources to fill critical gaps.

“We will be reviewing our budget to reflect the reality of today’s health sector needs. The triple elimination campaign aligns with our mission to ensure quality healthcare reaches every citizen, especially mothers and children”, Governor Aiyedatiwa stated.

Also speaking at the event, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Salako, revealed that the Federal Government is already working toward providing free or heavily subsidized liver and kidney function tests for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

He noted that ongoing efforts to identify and register those outside health insurance coverage are key to achieving equitable access to treatment.

A high point of the event was a moving spoken-word performance by young poet Oluwatomilayo, whose ewi (traditional Yoruba poetry) piece emphasized the importance of healthy lifestyle choices among Nigerian youth.

The “Free to Shine” initiative, backed by national and international health organizations, seeks to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis as public health threats.

With the South-West now on board, only the South-East remains before the campaign is fully operational nationwide.

The launch in Akure marked a significant step forward in Nigeria’s public health journey, reflecting a unified effort between government, civil society, and international partners to secure a healthier future for all Nigerians—free from the burden of these preventable diseases.

    • Fasoranti, monarchs applaud Tinubu’s govt

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu yesterday took her pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), to Ondo State, where she made a number of donations to petty female traders and farmers as well as nurses and midwives.

She announced during the distribution of professional kits to 10,000 nurses and midwives in the Southwest that N50 million had been made available to the state’s governor’s wife, Oluwaseun Aiyedatiwa, to support 1,000  female traders.

At the meeting with the monarchs, the First Lady said the RHI had received  N400 billion intervention fund from the Ministry of Agriculture.

She added that N68.9 million had been released to each of the wives of governors to support women farmers in their states.

She also told the monarchs that a scholarship scheme for students and an alternative high school for girls would soon be launched in the state.

She said:  “RHI recognises that the demand of the health professional requires not only skills and compassion, but also the right tools and kits to encourage our midwives as they serve others.

“Since the initial launch in January 2025, we have distributed the professional kits in four zones, namely Northcentral, Northeast, Northwest and Southsouth. By the grace of God, we will be concluding with the sixth zone in Enugu, Southeast in June.

“These donations have been made possible through the generous support of an anonymous global partner dedicated to improving health outcomes for our citizens. I refer to them as anonymous because they prefer to remain so.”

She told the traditional rulers that the scholarship scheme for students and the Alternative High School for Girls are tailored to provide both education and childcare support for teenage mothers through on-site crèches.

The First Lady also appealed to the monarchs to support her campaign to end female genital mutilation, Hepatitis B, and other sicknesses affecting women.

Chairman of the state Council of Obas and Olowo of Owo, Gbadegesin Ogunoye, said the traditional rulers would support the First Lady’s initiative.

    Fasoranti, monarchs applaud Tinubu’s govt

National Leader of  Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti and Ondo State  Council of Obas have hailed the  Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration’s performance in office.

While Pa Fasoranti said the government has done excellently since it came to power in May 2023, the   Obas’ council expressed confidence that Nigerians would seek the return of the President after the end of his first tenure in 2027.

They spoke at different meetings with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu in Akure yesterday.

Welcoming  Senator Tinubu to his residence, the 98-year-old Fasoranti said:  “I am satisfied with what he (Tinubu) is doing in Nigeria. Well done.”

He revealed that the President has surpassed his expectations and proceeded to offer prayers for divine guidance and wisdom for him (Tinubu) as he steers the affairs of the nation.

  • First Lady spreading dividends of renewed hope

First Lady spreading dividends of renewed hope

In the last 22 months, the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, through her empowerment initiatives, has implemented many laudable programmes that have enhanced the socio-economic well-being of women and youths, thereby serving as a model of service delivery and beacon of hope for beneficiaries. Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU highlights some of the activities.

Since 2023 when she became the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has been up and doing. She has a passion: to educate, motivate, encourage, assist and lift up indigent women, youths and other people so that they can savour the full benefits of citizenship and good governance.

Although she is the Amazon behind the throne, she is not help by power, which draws a wool across the eyes of those in the high corridor. The wife of the President is not aloof to the plights of the masses, who have to be supported to overcome predictable constraints to happy and productive existence.

Her vision, passion and focus are underscored by numerous empowerment projects implemented by her office under the ‘Renewed Hope Initiative.’ These programmes cut across education, health and social development targetted at beneficiaries across the six zones of the federation

Senator Oluremi’s antecedents aptly prepared her for the current supportive role. A teacher and moulder of character and lives; a successful wife and mother of promising children; an astute politician and experienced public officer; a cleric, humanist and philanthropist, her worldview is shaped by varied experiences.

Her strength lies in her power of ideas, initiative and compassion for the less privileged. Oluremi, Yeye Asiwaju of Lagos, three-term senator, wife of  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is now a role model for women in Africa, the role she plays with grace, charm, charisma, maturity, dignity, time management, discipline of mind, service orientedness and socio-economic enlightenment. This may have informed her election as a member of the Steering Committee of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), the highest decision-making body of the organisation.

Oluremi has combined the good qualities of her  predecessors – Flora Azikiwe, Victoria Gowon, and Maryam Babangida. But she is poles apart from the covetous lot in other climes; the tribe of arrogant first ladies focused on the primitive accumulation of gold and jewellery, which they, nevertheless, will not take to their graves.

According to observers, when it comes to doing good, Senator Oluremi is predictable. Like her husband, she hates poverty. In those days, her philanthropy transcends Nigeria. Worried by the plight of people in war-torn Liberia, she built a school in the devastated capital, Monrovia.

The First Lady is building on her Lagos legacy. Her New Era Foundation survived her tenure as wife of the Lagos governor and architect of modern Lagos. From that impressive performance, she entered the soap box, and the hidden virtues of an empathic politician unfolded. Mrs. Tinubu became a researcher, mobiliser, organiser, political host, party leader, and effective political and public speaker. She bares her mind on critical national issues, including electoral reforms, integrity of the ballot box, increased roles for women in democracy, party membership drive, women empowerment and social security for the elderly.

While she was in the Senate, Mrs. Tinubu was not a bench warmer. She also never became an Abuja politician who forgot her home. It is on record that Mrs. Tinubu canvassed for special federal economic assistance for Lagos as the nation’s economic nerve centre. Up to now, that quest for a special status has remained a tall order.

However, today, the entire country is her constituency where she has to expand the scope of her battle for a better and improved life for women in urban and rural areas, and where the 36 wives of the governors are expected to draw inspiration from her activities and creatively replicate them in their respective states.

The First Lady also carries other messages to women in politics and public life; in fact, she has something for men who think they can always dominate their women counterparts. It is the wish of Mrs. Tinubu that the gaps created by gender barriers should be bridged through inclusion. But women should also be vigilant, show more interest and avoid pulling down fellow women out of jealousy. Thus, Oluremi often urges women to rally behind one another for political office, emphasising the importance of solidarity, goodwill and mutual support in leadership.

Her activities as the visioner of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) are unique. Driven by the passion for equitable public welfare for the less privileged, the First Lady has packaged RHI as a vehicle for alleviating poverty, scholarship for students, economic empowerment, financial assistance to the aged and assistance to women in agriculture.

It is interesting that Mrs. Tinubu, having set a model, has also mobilised and encouraged wives of governors across the 36 states to creatively replicate the activities of the RHI in their domains. They see her as a mother figure and source of inspiration in the gospel of empowerment.

Although there is no constitutional role for the First Lady, Mrs. Tinubu fills a void in service delivery and beneficiaries of her interventions appreciate her contributions to their wellbeing.

Within the first 100 days of the current administration, 43 students from different states and geo-political zones received scholarships under the RHI. The motivation was her eternal belief in education and skills acquisition as guarantors of life enhancement, employability, self-reliance, socio-economic uplifting, and political consciousness.

Under the programme, girls in Bauchi State savour the benefit of ICT education through the ‘Alternative High School for Girls.’ The school assists those who may have faced obstacles, including early marriages and lack of support.

The ‘One Nigeria Unity Fabric Competition,’ which showcases the creative ingenuity of youths, also inspires the spirit of enterprise. The winner was entitled to N25 million. It was a boost to talent, giftedness, and spirit of industry.

    Unique empowerment

The flag-off of the RHI agricultural support programme in the six geo-political regions encourages women to till the soil and reap bountiful rewards for their labour. At the initial stage, no fewer than 20 women from each zone got N500,000 each. It is a programme done in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture. Also, the special population was taken into consideration as 100 people with disabilities received N100,000 each.

The Food Outreach Programme under the RHI’s Social Investment Scope was launched in March last year in Abuja. No fewer than 80 women in each of the 36 states were later targeted for empowerment. In October last year, Senator Tinubu launched the RHI Food Outreach in Ekiti State, with the distribution of food items to people living with disabilities, widows, special schools, and other vulnerable groups. The goal is to boost the productive energies of women, tackle hunger and poverty, and end food deficit in accordance with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration. RHI also distributed N1.9 billion to 9,500 elderly citizens nationwide.

Under the scheme, scholarships and free laptops were also given to each of the rescued students of the Federal University at Dutsinme in Katsina State while each of their parents also got N2 million.

In Borno State, 5,000 women who were victims of the Maiduguri flood disaster received N250 million. The victims of tanker explosions in some parts of the country also received the First Lady’s financial support.

Of concern to Mrs. Tinubu was the plight of 500 displaced Mangu families. They received N1 million each. Also, 500 women from each state in the Northcentral, namely: Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), got empowerment items, including deep freezers, grinding machines and cooking gas/ovens. Indeed, 18,500 women across the country will ultimately benefit from the scheme.

In Niger State, 500 women went home with various items, such as deep-chest freezers, maxi gas cookers with microwave ovens, generator sets, and industrial grinding machines.

In Maiduguri, over 9,000 bags and cartoons of food items were donated to vulnerable women. The items included 3,000 units of 25kg bags of rice, 2,000 units of 50kg bags of sugar, 2,000 gallons of vegetable oil and 2,000 cartons of pasta.

It is not the money that is donated that is the main issue. The more important lesson is the noble intention of showing empathy, sympathy and affection to those hitherto neglected, the extension of a duty of care to one’s neighbour.

Mrs. Tinubu emphasized the alignment of this initiative with global development goals, saying:

“Women’s empowerment is central to achieving all the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG-5 on gender equality and SDG-8 on decent work and economic growth. These items are not just tools; they are stepping stones toward financial independence and a better future for Nigerian women.”

She urged beneficiaries to use the resources wisely to build better lives for themselves and their families.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, highlighted the broader impact of the program on sustainable development. She said: “It is not just about distributing empowerment items; it is about unlocking potential, fostering economic independence, and creating opportunities for women to thrive.

“By equipping 500 women per state and the FCT with tools such as gas cookers, generators, deep freezers, and grinding machines, we are strengthening their capacity to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to inclusive national development.”

Orelope-Adefulire commended the First Lady for her visionary leadership through RHI and reiterated OSSAP-SDGs’ commitment to ensuring no woman is left behind in Nigeria’s journey toward achieving the SDGs.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, said Nigeria can achieve economic boost driven by women.

She added: “This initiative is unprecedented. For years, empowerment programmes have relied heavily on donor funding. It marks a shift as domestic resources are being mobilized under Mr. President’s leadership to empower women at all levels.

“When women are empowered, families thrive, children stay in school, and communities prosper. This program is a testament to our commitment to nation-building through women’s empowerment.”

The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, said the initiatives symbolised more than material aid but that they represent opportunities for transformation and sustainable development.

“Women are the backbone of our society. This empowerment initiative is a testament to our commitment to uplifting women and ensuring they have the tools to thrive economically and socially.” She further added: “These items are stepping stones for women to build thriving businesses, support their families, and contribute meaningfully to our communities.”

Another outstanding contribution of the First Lady is the distribution of professional kits to trained midwives in the North as part of a broader national effort to equip frontline health workers with essential tools to enhance maternal and child healthcare.

During the week, Mrs. Tinubu, on behalf of RHI, donated N1bn to the National Cancer Fund to fight the scourge of cervical cancer in the country, to the delight of thr National Taskforce on Cervical Cancer Elimination. She also urged Nigerians, especially women, to speak up and seek appropriate help whenever they have medical challenges.

    Anti-HIV campaigns

She is also setting a new example of reorientation with emphasis on anti-HIV/AIDS campaigns, advocacy against early marriages, genital mutilation, child labour, and the essence of educating the girl-child.

Mrs. Tinubu decried the increasing rate of new HIV infections in the country, which is due among other reasons, to high mother to child transmission.

At the flag-off f the ‘Free-To-Fine’ csmpaign in Ilorin, Kwara State, she called for intensifying of efforts to ensure that the global Triple Elimination target of HIV/AIDS, Syphilis and Hepatitis is achieved by 2030.

“It is heartbreaking to learn that just two years ago, 15,000 children between the ages of 0-14 lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses. Each of these children represented, not just a statistic, but a future full of potential, that was sadly cut short. The ongoing challenges faced by these children highlight the urgent need for sustained action to improve prevention strategies, diagnosis, and access to treatment,” she said.

Mrs. Tinubu urged faith-based institutions, traditional institutions, schools and family units to deepen advocacy on the prevention on HIV behaviors, especially those engaging in birthing services, by expanding access to HIV testing services with comprehensive counselling, treatment and care for all individuals who test positive.

Kwara State VoverbMallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq thanked the First Lady for leading the campaign from the front, saying thatthat Nigeria can achieve the goal of the Triple Elimination by 2030 since the nation did so with Polio and also ramped up testing and treatment of Tuberculosis which has led to a drastic reduction in the spread and mortality rate.

“ We have a president who is very committed to improving the health and wellbeing of Nigerians”.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare Prof. Mohammed Alli Pate noted that his Ministry will not relent in ensuring that Nigeria exits the list of countries with high statistics of HIV/AIDS and other diseases.
