First Lady Tinubu canvasses renewed commitment to end TB by 2030

First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged stakeholders to develop innovative approaches to combat Tuberculosis (TB) and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) in a strategic and integrated manner.

Speaking as the Global and National Stop TB Champion at the Stop TB Partnership on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Senator Tinubu emphasized the importance of addressing TB and AMR together.

Nigeria bears one of the highest TB burdens globally, resulting in approximately 125,000 deaths annually. TB affects men, women, and children across all social and economic backgrounds, with the poor being most vulnerable.

Despite substantial progress in fighting TB, Drug-Resistant TB remains a significant concern due to its airborne nature, posing a threat to global health security.

According to a statement by her Senior Special Assistant on Media Kukoyi Mrs. Tinubu stressed the need for preventive measures, awareness, education, and research to develop new tools and treatments.

To tackle this challenge, Tinubu proposed a multi-faceted approach, including preventing new infections, improving awareness about the dangers of Drug-Resistant TB, promoting responsible antibiotic usage, and prioritizing research to develop new tools, treatments, and vaccines.

“Today, I bring a message of hope and determination. We have the tools, the knowledge, and the expertise to end TB and AMR by 2030. Addressing TB and AMR together is not just the smart way, it is the best and only way.

“TB does not discriminate; it affects men, women, and children, cutting across all social and economic backgrounds, with the poor being the most vulnerable.

“As a Global and National Stop TB Champion, advocating for joint efforts on addressing TB and AMR is crucial. Tuberculosis is a disease that has plagued our communities for so long and the response to the disease has experienced AMR in all its dimensions.

“Despite substantial progress in the fight against TB, Drug-Resistant TB has been a challenge for decades and presently still remains a major cause for concern. Due to its airborne nature of spread, it is today a threat to global health security.

“Therefore, I call upon all stakeholders to develop innovative approaches to fight both TB and AMR in a strategic and integrated manner.

“Our methods must include preventing new infections, improving awareness, education on the dangers of Drug-Resistant TB, and promoting the appropriate use of antibiotics.

“We must also prioritize research in order to develop new tools, treatments and new vaccines that can outpace the evolving threat of AMR”, she said.

Earlier in her remarks, Executive Director Stop TB Partnership, Dr Lucica Ditiu urged all those present to build on each other’s strengths as individual countries to fight TB.

“We are struggling but we are still making significant impact with amazing results”, she said.

The event which had in attendance Wives of the Kwara and Imo State Governors, Amb Dr. Olufolake Abdulrazaq and Barr. Chioma Uzodimma, Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate and Ministers from other countries had as its theme, Breaking the Resistance: Fighting AMR and TB together for a Healthy Future.

    • Tasks Nigerians to care for needy neighbours

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has handed over donated items to the President of Defense and Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs. Oghogho Musa, for distribution to wives of fallen heroes and veterans.

The donation, which included cosmetics, handbags, shoes, and food items, was made under the social investment program of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), the First Lady’s pet project.

Speaking at the handing over ceremony at the POWA School, Area 11, Abuja, yesterday, Mrs. Tinubu expressed gratitude to well-meaning Nigerians and companies, including BUA, who have donated items to the cause.

She emphasised the importance of being one’s brother’s keeper and encouraged everyone to reach out to their neighbors and engage in the “Every Home a Garden” initiative to reduce food costs.

The First Lady also commended the food drive under the social investment program, which has been providing food items to states across the country.

The donated items are expected to empower the widows and veterans, who are mostly small business owners, to improve their livelihoods.

“Today isn’t actually a formal event, it is like an official handing over of items that were going to be donating to widows of fallen heroes and also veterans who have retired from active service and in various small business scale industries, I think we call them SMEs.

“So we are here to make a donation of items from cosmetics, handbags, shoes that are high quality that most of them that are already established in these businesses, or are trusted to be able to start a business with all these items (they’re quite a lot of items) that will gladly use these to empower them.

“This scheme of today is under the social investment programme of the Renewed Hope Initiative. From time to time, we have well-meaning Nigerians donating items to us; food, money, which we use for the work. We want to thank all those people who have believed in us to use whatever resources they’ve expended on us to use it quite well.

“They’ve trusted us, they’ve entrusted us with all these items, and that’s why we’re making it public for you to see that they are going into very good hands. We would like to thank some companies, food companies like BUA and somebody who would like to remain anonymous. They are just companies that manufacture food items like, BUA.

“So those of them have invested in our food drive under the social investment. So every month, Her Excellency, Mrs. Shettima, goes to different states and I think it has increased to two states per month now, including BUA giving us a truckload of food that we take to each state under our food drive to just help ameliorate the challenges people are facing at this time.

“I believe that my advice to people that they should try to be their brother’s keepers, that is the type of atmosphere and the ambience I lived in the 60s. It takes a village to… that has raised me, different people contributed to who I am and what I am still today. So we don’t have to harden our hearts to our neighbors. Reach out to them.

“Thank God that Mrs. Musa mentioned the ‘Every Home a Garden’ and she said “garden in your backyard”. There’s no other simple way of explaining that it’s the best way. Whatever it is, no matter how small, you’ll have vegetables and it will reduce the cost of food. I want to encourage everyone, we’re doing that and I think everyone should be involved in that and be your brother’s keepers”, Mrs. Tinubu said.

Speaking earlier, the President DEPOWA and wife of the Chief of Defense Staff, Mrs. Oghogho Musa, acknowledged First Lady Tinubu’s consistent efforts to aid the needy, particularly widows and veterans, through various programs under the Renewed Hope Initiative.

  • ‘First Lady’s empowerment initiatives forward-looking’

    ‘First Lady’s empowerment initiatives forward-looking’

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has been described as a true mother who has the interest of Nigerians and loves to assist people to improve their lives.

This is said to manifest in all the social and economic initiatives she has so far enunciated which have been said to be progressive.

The Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, Christian Nwachukwu (JP) stated this recently during an interview with reporters at the Lagos State Igbo Community Centre in Okota, Lagos.

The Igbo leader noted that though the current economic and social situations in the country are not cherry, they will soon give way to more prosperous and idyllic situations where every Nigerian will revel in the benefits that will accrue from the solid economic foundations being laid by the Tinubu administration.

“The current pains experienced by Nigerians will, in no distant future, become history because the Tinubu administration is making great efforts in turning the tide of economic misfortune into prosperity through the policies and programmes it has so far enunciated,” he said.

On the efforts by the First Lady to improve the living conditions of Nigerians, especially women, girls and children, Eze Nwachukwu said Mrs Tinubu’s initiatives are complementary to President Tinubu’s efforts toward ensuring that better days are here again.

Eze Nwachukwu alluded to the Renewed Hope Initiatives (RHI) which she has enunciated that were aimed at making life better for the people, especially women.

Noting that agriculture remains pivotal in the quest to give the kiss of life to the economy, President Tinubu has laid much emphasis on supporting farmers to enable them to produce more food to guarantee food security, even as he added that the wife keyed into the president’s programme.

“President Tinubu recognises the pivotal role that agriculture would play in achieving sustainable development and ensuring food security; hence his commitment to ensuring that the agricultural sector received the necessary attention and boost.

“It is not surprising that Mrs Tinubu keyed into the programme through her Renewed Hope Initiative, which is committed to supporting women farmers across the country to strengthen the agricultural sector.

“When the initiative was launched, 20 women farmers in each state received N500,000 each. This translates to 740 women farmers who benefited from that singular programme. The programme tagged “#FoodOnEveryTable,” will help boost food production and ensure food sufficiency,” Nwachukwu said.

The Igbo leader decried the ugly situation in which no authentic data on the number of births was recorded in the country daily, weekly, monthly and yearly. He praised the First Lady for launching the initiative to boost birth registration in Nigeria.

Stressing that birth registration functions as a child’s legal proof of identity, essential for accessing government services such as healthcare and education, the Igbo leader said: “Children who do not have birth certificates are always faced with substantial difficulties that may include the problem in proving their age and the inability to benefit from essential social amenities due to lack of proper records.”

He stated that for Mrs Tinubu, through her RHI to partner with the National Population Commission (NPC) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to launch the UNICEF/RHI Commemorative Birth Certificate in the country was a forward-looking move to enhance birth registration in Nigeria.

“It is a move aimed at supporting the Tinubu administration’s efforts to accelerate universal free birth registration and certification, especially for newborns, using the national digital civil registration and vital statistics (eCRVS) in all health facilities and communities,” Nwachukwu said.

The Igbo leader also commended the First Lady for offering scholarships to 200 Nigerian students through her Renewed Hope Initiative. The gesture, Nwachukwu said, would help in providing opportunities for youths to have access to quality education.

Also recalling that the First Lady recently empowered 37,000 women petty traders with 50,000 each, Eze Nwachukwu stated that the nationwide launch was aimed at empowering the women petty traders so that they would be economically and financially independent and contribute to the efforts by the Federal Government to alleviate poverty among Nigerians, adding that it will also enable the women to contribute to the growth of the local economy.

“For 1,000 women petty traders in each state and Abuja to receive a grant of N50,000 each; amounting to ₦1.85 billion, underscores her commitment to fostering economic growth and improving the quality of life for Nigerian families,” he said.

Eze Nwachukwu also narrated how, some years ago, Mrs Tinubu assisted stranded air travellers whose flights were cancelled at Abuja Airport.

“She,” he said, “walked into the Departure Hall and invited those going to Lagos to join her in her private jet; without minding who they are or where they come from. It takes a mother and a humble person to do so.”
