The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) on Tuesday said it had registered no fewer than 1.6 million teachers.

A statement issued by the Registrar of the council, Prof. Olusegun Ajiboye, also said that the first professional qualifying examination of TRCN would hold in September, 2017.

The examination, he added, was   designed to fully professionalise teaching in Nigeria.

He said: “The Registration Council will put a stop to normal registration by end of May and ensure that only those qualified are employed by government for quality assurance.

“By end of 2017, Nigerian children will be taught by only qualified professional teachers who can deliver the quality education desirous for the elevation of our children and our country.

  • Four policemen die in Lagos auto crash

Four policemen attached to X -Squad of the Lagos State Police Command have been killed after a lorry ran over their patrol van at Ikorodu.

It was gathered that the accident occurred on Sunday afternoon along Shagamu Road, Isiwu.

While Inspectors Olusegun Ajiboye and Donatus Nwaego, who sat at the back, as well as a woman Sergeant, Umoru Blessing, died on the spot, Corporal Idowu Ibidapo died at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, where he was rushed to.

News of the police operatives’ death threw the X-Squad into mourning as their colleagues, including the Commander, Bode Fakeye, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), who was said to have shuttled between LASUTH and Ikorodu morgues on Sunday, were visibly sad.

The team which was in a Nissan frontier van marked NPF409D had attempted to make a U-turn when the unmarked 911 lorry veered off its lane and rammed into them.

Reliving her ordeal, the crash survivor, Ibitola Egbeola, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and leader of the team, said it happened in split seconds.

The policewoman, who was discharged from the hospital after she was certified unhurt, described her survival as a miracle.

She said: “The whole incident happened within a twinkle of an eye. We were going to do a U-turn at Agbowa when we saw the lorry that veered off from its lane, facing us. There was no way our driver could manoeuvre, as there was a ditch to our right.

“The next thing I heard was a bang, followed by a black out. The next time I opened my eyes, I saw myself inside an ambulance, with Corporal Idowu, heading to the hospital. My survival can only be attributed to God.”

According to the command’s spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), the driver of the unregistered lorry fled the scene as soon as the accident occurred.

He said: “At about 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, a team of policemen attached to X- Squad at the state Police Command while on surveillance and patrol duty along Isiwu road, Imota, Ikorodu were involved in a fatal motor accident leaving four police officers in the patrol truck dead.

“The police van had five policemen onboard and was allegedly hit by an unregistered 911 tipper and the driver, who could not be identified at the time of this report, fled the scene.

“It was disclosed that both vehicles were coming from opposite direction at a point near Isiwu town and they colluded, in the process three policemen died on the spot. As a result of that, traffic policemen were immediately dispatched to the scene. An ASP with an Inspector who sustained serious injuries were rushed to LASUTH, Ikeja, where the latter died and the former is currently admitted.

“Meanwhile, corpses have been deposited at General hospital Ikorodu and LASUTH, Ikeja for autopsy. The police patrol truck and lorry have been towed to the division.

“Investigation is ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect.”

  • Union goes spiritual

    Union goes spiritual

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday declared a three-day fasting and prayer to seek divine intervention in its protracted dispute with the Federal Government.

The decision was taken at the union’s congress held at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan.

The congress, which was presided over by the Chairman, Dr Olusegun Ajiboye, stressed the need for God to visit the Federal Government to do the needful and document the resolutions of the meeting with the President Goodluck Jonathan.

The congress listed three prayer points- the need for God to touch the heart of the Federal Government to be committed towards funding public education and develop the nation; that God should protect ASUU leadership as they travel and for the purpose of the strike to be actualised.

Ajiboye said the union do not need newspaper confirmation from the President that N200billion had been deposited with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

He said it was impossible for anybody who has not opened an account with a bank to request a balance.

Ajiboye accused the Federal Government of keeping the students at home.

The Chairman hinted that the union has the machinery to suspend the strike within 24 hours once the grey areas in the resolutions have been sorted out.

He said: “Our position is that it will be foolish to return to classes without anything to show for five months of strike. Why is the Federal Government afraid of documenting the resolutions it reached with the union. We are still expecting the response from the President.”

  • UI lecturers, students shun classrooms

Lecturers and students of the University of Ibadan (UI) yesterday stayed away from the campus.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) lashed out at Dr Doyin Okupe, the Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan, for calling the union “enemy of the state”.

The union urged the President to read its letter to know that it was not out to disrespect him but to give him more credibility.

When our reporter visited the campus yesterday, the lecture rooms remained shut without any lecturer in sight. There was also no register for either the lecturers or students to sign.

The union assembled its members at a congress and resolved not to sign any register.

It urged the government to implement the agreement the union signed with it.

The UI-ASUU Chairman Dr Olusegun Ajiboye said the union would ensure that the government funded public universities well.

Ajiboye said the union respects the office of Mr President, adding that Dr Okupe and other sycophantic advisers were indirectly ridiculing the office through their unguarded utterances.

Ajiboye said: “Nigerians should judge the true enemies of state between a person begging the owner of schools to fund it and the praise singers saying the government has released money, when it has not. Posterity is there to judge us all.”
