    Gatekeeper in court for stealing hotel generator

    A 33-year-old gatekeeper, David Agba, who allegedly stole a generator worth N134,000 from his employer, was on Wednesday brought before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused, a resident of Satelite Town area of Lagos, is facing a charge of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused, who entered a ‘not-guilty’ plea, committed the offence on May 11 at Premier Hotel, Babawa Bus Stop, Satellite Town, Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused stole a generator worth N134,000 belonging to Premier Hotel.

    Kokoye said that the generator had a fault, so the complainant stopped using it for a while, since there was another one.

    The prosecutor said that when the gatekeeper noticed that they had abandoned the generator, he decided to steal it.

    Kokoye said that when the management discovered that the generator was missing,they confronted Agba, who denied knowing anything about it.

    He said that the management reported the case to the police and Agba was arrested as a suspect, since he was in charge of guarding the building.

    The prosecutor noted that the offence contravened Sections 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 prescribes three-year jail term for a person convicted of stealing.

    The Magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum.

    He adjourned the case until July 31 for mention.

    Teenager in court for stabbing man in neck

    Nineteen-year-old Niyi Akanni on Thursday appeared in an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stabbing a man in the neck after an argument between them.

    Akanni, who resides at Amukoko area of Apapa, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 19, at Oja Market, Amukoko, Apapa, Lagos.

    He said that the accused beat up one Femi Otunba, stabbed him with a knife in the neck and ear, and tried to flee.

    Kokoye said that the assault was as a result of an argument which ensued between the accused and the complainant.

    He said efforts by passers-by to settle the dispute proved abortive.

    The prosecutor said Akanni was apprehended by some pedestrians as he tried to escape after stabbing the complainant, and taken to the police station.

    He said that the complainant, on the other hand, was rushed to the hospital.

    Kokoye said that the offence contravened Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 173 prescribes a three-year jail term for an offender found guilty of assault occasioning harm.

    The magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, granted the accused N200,000 bail, with two sureties in like sum.

    Etti said the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    He adjourned the case till June 28 for mention.

    Man in court for raping physically challenged girl

    A 27-year-old man, Michael Ubani, who allegedly raped and stole from a 19-year-old physically challenged girl, was on Thursday remanded in Kirikiri Prison, Lagos.

    The Magistrate, Mr M. A. Etti, who gave the ruling at an Apapa Magistrate Court, said the accused should remain in custody pending when his bail application would be considered.

    The accused, who resides at Olodi Apapa area of Apapa, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of rape, assault and stealing.

    Earlier the prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 5 at his residence.

    Kokoye alleged that the complainant was sleeping in her apartment when Ubani forcefully entered her room and raped her.

    “The complainant said that the accused dragged her to the floor and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

    “She said that the accused also stole the N3,000 she kept in her wardrobe.

    “The complainant said Ubani was apprehended by their neighbour who heard her screaming for help.

    “The complainant reported the case to the police and Ubani was arrested and taken to the police station for further questioning,” he said.

    The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 172, 287 and 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 260 prescribes a 14 -year jail term upon conviction for rape.

    The case was adjourned till June 27, for mention.

  • Salesman in court for absconding with N161,000

    A 20-year-old salesman, Damilola Ikumola who allegedly stole N161,000 from his employer, Alex Ajanaku, on Monday appeared before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Ikumola, who is facing a two-count charge of breach of peace and stealing, pleaded not guilty.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused, who resides at Ajegunle area of Lagos, committed the offences on April 22 at Ladega Street, Olodi Apapa, Lagos.

    Kokoye said that Ikumola stole N161,000 proceeds of sales at the company and failed to go to work the following day.

    He said that when the complainant noticed that the money in the drawer was missing and the accused was not at work the following day, he decided to call him.

    Kokoye said that all effort made to reach the accused on phone proved abortive.

    He said Ajanaku immediately reported the case to the police and the accused was traced to his apartment, where he was apprehended and taken to the police station.

    The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 169 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mr T.O Aro-Lambo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000, with one surety in like sum.

  • Man faces child defilement charge

    A 31-year-old man, Isaiah Adebayo, who allegedly defiled a nine-year-old girl after enticing her with biscuits, on Thursday, appeared before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Adebayo, who resides in Badagry area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge of defilement and sexual assault.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offences at his apartment on March 14.

    Kokoye said the accused lured the girl into his apartment with biscuits and had defiled her.

    “The cry of the girl alerted a neighbour, who broke into the room and to her surprise; she caught the accused inserting his fingers into the girl’s private part.

    “The case was reported at the police station and the accused was immediately arrested,” said Kokoye.

    The offences contravened Sections 137 and 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 137 prescribes life imprisonment for child rape.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr Patrick Adekomaiya, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    The case was adjourned until May 21 for mention.

     

  • Man in court for beating woman to a pulp

    A 38-year-old man, Alhaji Bukar, who allegedly assaulted a woman, Asiata Yahaya, by beating her to a pulp, on Thursday appeared before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Bukar, a resident of the Apapa area of Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of threatening violence and assault.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 18 at Gaskiya Road, Ijora, Badia, Apapa, Lagos.

    Kokoye said that the accused assaulted the complainant by beating her to a pulp and also threatening to kill her.

    “The complainant said the fight started as a result of an argument which ensued between the duo.

    “The accused claimed that Yahaya was very rude to him.

    “Yahaya said all efforts made by passers-by to settle the dispute proved abortive; the accused just kept on beating her,” Kokoye said.

    The prosecutor said that the case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested.

    The offences, he said, contravened Sections 56 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

  • Woman docked for cutting neighbour’s finger

    A 34-year-old woman, Ada Ikart, on Tuesday appeared in an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos for allegedly beating her neighbor, Justina Oke, and used razor blade to cut her finger.

    Ikart, a resident of Baba Sule Str. Ajegunle, Apapa in Lagos, is standing trial on a charge of assault.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offence on December 24, 2016 at her residence.

    Kokoye said that the fight started as a result of an argument which ensued between the accused and the complainant.

    The prosecutor also said Oke reported the case to the police, adding that the accused was subsequently, arrested and charged to court.

    The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The Magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Etti said the sureties must be gainfully employed and must show evidence of two-year tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    He adjourned further hearing in the matter to April 26 for mention.

     

  • Bus conductor gets bail for stealing sachet of milk

    A 25-year-old bus conductor, Okechukwu Nwafor, who allegedly stole a sachet of powdered milk, was on Friday admitted to bail in the sum of N20,000 by an Apapa Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    The Magistrate, Mr M.A. Etti, who gave the ruling, granted the accused one surety as part of the bail conditions.

    Etti said that the surety must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, however, pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing.

    Earlier, the Prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused committed the offence on March 18, at Satellite Town, Lagos.

    Kokoye said that the accused stole a sachet of powdered milk, valued at N700 and N200 cash from a trader, Esther Agbenyo.

    The prosecutor said that when the accused noticed that Agbenyo had a lot of customers in front of her, he quickly took a sachet of powdered milk and N200 cash that were on the table.

    Kokoye said Nwafor was about to bolt away, when one of Agbenyo’s customers, who saw the accused stealing the milk, raised an alarm.

    The prosecutor said that the accused was apprehended by the trader’s customers, who were at the scene of the incident.

    Kokoye said that Agbenyo reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested.

    He said the offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term for stealing.

    The case was adjourned until April 12 for trial.

    Man in court over stabbing of victim with broken bottle

    A 27-year-old man, Archibong Aniekan, who allegedly stabbed Ikechukwu Ajuke with broken bottle, was on Friday admitted to N200, 000 bail by an Apapa Magistrates’ Court.

    The accused, who resides at Ajegunle area of Apapa, Lagos, is facing a charge of assault.

    The Magistrate, Mr M.A Etti, in his ruling, said that the accused should produce two sureties as part of the bail conditions.

    Etti said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Olusegun Kokoye, told the court that the accused, who entered a not guilty plea, committed the offence on March 5 at Suru-Alaba Market in Ajegunle area of Apapa, Lagos.

    Kokoye alleged that the accused assaulted Ajuke by stabbing him with broken bottle on his left arm and also beat him.

    He said that the assault followed an argument which ensued between the accused and the complainant.

    Kokoye said that after Aniekan had stabbed the complainant, he tried to escape, but was apprehended by some pedestrians at the scene and handed over to the police.

    He said that the offences contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
