  • ‘Zero Hunger Initiative will help to achieve food security by 2030’

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday restated commitment of the Zero Hunger Strategic Initiative to end hunger and achieve food security by year 2030.

The former president made this known on Thursday at the Nigeria Zero Hunger Strategic Forum Meeting in Sokoto State.

Obasanjo said that initiative, which would spread across the 36 states and Abuja, would work to improve food security through the promotion of sustainable agriculture.

“It is essentially also to bring us closer to a zero hunger world, rapid economic growth and increase agricultural productivity.

“At the moment, we are targeting six states. They are Sokoto, Kebbi, Borno, Ogun, Ebonyi and Benue.

“We are working substantially with our various development partners together to succeed on our target of ending hunger and poverty across the entire country,” he said.

Obasanjo said that the forum would support, encourage and monitor progress in the six states, adding that the governors of the states had agreed to implement the Zero Hunger Road map.

“I feel highly honoured to be here in the ancient city of Sokoto, the Seat of the Caliphate.” he said

In his remarks the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar said agriculture remained the mainstay of the economy.

“For the people of Sokoto state, especially our ancestors had laid for us a solid foundation on which sustainable development could have been engineered.

“Unfortunately, however, farming culture and all associated fortunes were thrown away as a result of the oil boom,” he said.

Abubakar said that the forum would no doubt serve as impetus which would embolden the government in its desire to implement the agriculture policies.

Sultan said that in January 2017, history was made when the Federal Government took the initiative by launching the Strategic Plan.

“The plan was tagged: “Synthesis Report of the Nigeria Zero Hunger Strategic Review’ and the effort is to end hunger and achieve food security by the year 2030.

Gov. Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal of of Sokoto state, said that strategic plans and programmes had been formulated over the years with an ardent focus on achieving Zero Hunger by 2030.

Tambuwal said that successive governments had made several attempts to reorient the people and to ensure the restoration of farming values, but very little successes had been recorded.

“I sincerely believe that with proper commitment and careful planning, the aspirations could be realised; and our state could excel and become a food basket for the nation.

“Therefore, as responsive communities, we are determined to channel our human and material resources in the most productive ways, particularly through the development of agriculture.

“Every citizen of our dear nation has the civic responsibility of advancing the course of its development.

“All hands must therefore be on deck to plan and realise our Zero Hunger desire as outlined by our Zero Hunger Strategic Initiative,” he said.

Alhaji Bashir Garba, the Chairman, Local Organising Committee of the event, said that the Sokoto State Government under the able leadership of Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal had executed considerable number of projects to boost agriculture in the State.

Garba, who is also the Secretary to the State Government, said that this ranged from the procurement, distribution of farming implements, assorted fertilisers  to chemicals.

  • Amosun hails state troupe on award

The Ogun State Government has commended the performance and achievement of the State cultural troupe at the recent National Festival of Arts and Culture Competition held in Rivers State.

Giving the commendation at the 2019 Treasury board meeting, held at the Obas Complex in Abeokuta, the State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, who was represented by his Deputy, Chief (Mrs.) Yetunde Onanuga, said the cultural troupe, particularly, the winner of the Ayo-Olopon board game have made the state proud.‎

He said that state was really proud of the giants stride been achieved during the National Festival of Arts and Culture Competition, advising them to really do more on the subsequent competition.

Earlier, the State Commissioner for culture and tourism, Bashorun Muyiwa Oladipo, drew the attention of the Governor to the National winner of Ayo Olopon board game, Akanbi Rasheed, who in the last two years had performed well at the National Festival of Arts and Culture, thereby recommending him for automatic employment into the State Civil Service.

“Due to the laurels recorded in the last competition, I will not hesitate in bringing the player forward, presenting him to the Governor, this is a guy that beat  the former Head of State, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in ayo-olopon ‎ (Board game)”, he said.

While appreciating  the Governor for staffing some members of the cultural troupe, the Commissioner further appealed to the Governor to approve recruitment of some Casual staff within the troupe, saying, ” as we move on, the troupe moves higher, so we need more hands”, he said.

  • Obasanjo cautions governors on local govt funds

FORMER President Olusegun Obasanjo yesterday cautioned governors on how they handled money meant for local governments.

He lamented that the ways governors managed local governments funds had rendered them incapable of performing, even the basic functions for their people.

The ex-President spoke when members of a non-governmental organisation, Friends of Democracy (FoD), visited him at his new home within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, the state capital.

Obasanjo accused the governors of pilfering local governments’ funds through the nebulous “joint account”, adding that this informed why they remained antagonistic to the agitation for local government autonomy.

He lamented that many of the third tier of government could not perform their statutory functions because they have been “incapacitated financially” by the state governments.

The group was in Obasanjo’s home to seek his support for the Local Government Autonomy Bill, which had been passed by the National Assembly, but still requires the nod of about 24 State Houses of Assembly to sail through successfully.

According to Obasanjo, some of the state governments took money from the joint account without contributing to it.

The elder statesman noted that the local government reforms carried out in 1976 was meant to give the third tier of government an air of freedom and not to be an appendage of the state governments.

The ex-President regretted that governors, who are enjoying autonomy, are opposed to the agitation for measures granting autonomy to councils.

He urged the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to insist on the autonomy in the interest of the people at the grassroots.

Obasanjo said: “Local government is meant to be autonomous from the state government, but from what we know, by design, most states have incapacitated the local governments. They have virtually stolen the local governments’ money in what they called Joint Account. They were to contribute 10 per cent, but they never contributed anything.

“So, what we have across the country are local government areas that have functions, but cannot perform the functions. They have staff but most of them cannot pay the staff and we keep getting excuses upon excuses.

“And I see no reason, if the Federal Government allows the states to enjoy their autonomy, except in the case of state of emergency.

“The Bill passed by the National Assembly, which requires 24 state Houses of Assembly, like I am told, only nine states signed it.

“I am proud of those states because they are what you will call progressive states that really believe in democracy.

“My own state (Ogun) is one of them. I will say kudos to Ogun State. In the Southsouth, only Bayelsa and Cross River states have signed it. Kudos to the two states. In the Northeast, it’s only Bauchi. In the Northwest, it’s only Sokoto. In the Northcentral, we have four states, Kwara, Niger, Plateau and Benue. I will say kudos to the executives and the legislatures of those states.

“But we must say those state executives and the legislatures that have prevented the bill from being passed, they must be taken as the enemy of the people and they should be treated as such. Because if you enjoy autonomy from the Federal Government, why don’t you want local governments to enjoy autonomy?

  • Rudderless Nigeria is not God’s making – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday bemoaned the frustrations of Nigerians because of the state of affairs in the country, but said he still remained convinced that “God did not create Nigeria to be rudderless.”
Obasanjo said God created Nigeria and endowed her to be one of the great nations of the world, declaring that it is not the fault of God that the country is unable to attain its potential despite the great endowments.
The ex – President spoke at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library(OOPL), Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital,  when the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolade Osinowo led the candidates of the party in the state, including the governorship candidate; Prince Gboyega Nasir Isiaka, the running mate,  Mrs Bisi Okeowo – Bolade and Chief (Mrs) Titi Oseni – Gomez, for the 2019 general elections to him.
He reckoned that God though usually use human beings to advance his cause on earth, stressing however,  that what the pitiable state the country is today is result of the “conscious and unconscious choice of the people of Nigeria.”
He noted that many are “hopelessly frustrated and disillusioned” in the country, but also counselled Nigerians not to despair much, expressing the hope that the “God of miracle” that had continued to love Nigeria, would  bring succor to the land.
He also admitted that Nigeria as a country has made many mistakes which could have plunged it to extinction, but said the country has continued to exist and remained as one because of the love and grace of God upon her.
Obasanjo explained that he is not one of those who would sit down and be wringing one’s fingers when things are bad, on the contrary, he said he would reflect and deliberate to figure out what is amis as well as suggests likely exit path.
According to him, this informed why he wrote a certain letter in the  past, pointing out what ails Nigeria and proceeded to push for a coalition of forces to spearhead and drive a better country for all.

He said: “I believe that God has decided that things will change for good in Nigeria. Some people are in despair due to the situation of things in the country, it is understandable.

“God did not create Nigeria to be rudderless, He did not create Nigeria to be a failed country. God created Nigeria to be one of the leading countries among the committee of nations. That we are not there is not the fault of God, that we are not there is a conscious and unconscious choice of the people of Nigeria.

“I believed then, when we were confronted with bad situations in this nation, we should sit back and think and look at the situation and ask ourselves, what is wrong? and when we have ascertained what is wrong, what can we do to correct what is wrong?

“And that was the statement I made on the 23rd of January which led to the establishment of Coalition for Nigeria Movement to start doing something about the wrongs and stop complaining.

“One thing is to think of what to do, another is to do something about it which is very important. We have gone from that  statement making to  the adoption of a political party because movement is an activism but in the context of moving Nigeria froward, our Constitution only allow a political parties to be the instrument.

“And when we did the assessment we decided to come up with a political party for the yearning Nigerians and for the betterment of Nigeria.

“We have made so many mistakes in this country that should have stopped Nigeria from existing but that has not been our lot. Some are going from PDP to APC and back to PDP, in the short run we have no choice but in the long, we have choice because we cannot be running here and there and expect transformation.

“We have to get out of where we are and the only way to get out is through what you have in your hand, your party.

“If your party do things the way  other parties have done things in this country, it will not create a new channel for Nigeria so you have to be different and that is why the movement adopted ADC.

“You can not do things the way other parties have done it in the past and expect a difference, in fact you must not.

“Going by so what  happened in Osun election, you must not give money to voters, don’t buy voters, your party must be different and voters should know that those who buy them will steal their money.

“Let me warn those of you who are going for legislative assembly, don’t go their to steal you are going as law makers so make laws for good governance. It is necessary for you to let people know that you are different.

“I will continue to do what is good for the country till I die. I am not a man of ADC I am just a guide and adviser also to PDP and APC and SDP. Whoever comes around, my doors are open.”

Obasanjo lauded the ADC for what he described as its phenomenal growth in Ogun State and Nigeria, and advised the party to strive to be different from other political parties and also “work extremely hard” to achieve successes in 2019.
On the Governorship candidate of the party in Ogun state, Obasanjo described Gboyega Nasir Isiaka as his “son” in whom he is “well pleased,” saying he is a “credible and trusted candidate” deserving of the executive office of the state.

“Gboyega Isiaka, I believe you are a good product and your running mate but don’t sleep, you have to work hard. We have a peculiar situation in Ogun State since creation and the situation is that the East has democratically produced governors twice also the central but the West has not produced any.

“One of the things I usually hear is that they(Ogun West) have no people, how there you say that. No section of this country has monopoly of good people. I have maintained that it is time for the people of the West to be given opportunity to provide the governor,” he said.

  • Nigeria needs righteous people in political positions, says Boss Mustapha

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, on Saturday said for people to continue to rejoice, righteous people should be voted into political offices in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

Youths, Mustapha said must get involved and be card carrying members of political parties of their choice to achieve the desired change for the development of the country.

He promised that on no account will he downplay the challenges confronting the country especially in the northern part and called  for drastic solution by all.

The SGF spoke at the Northern Christian Youth Economic and Political Summit, held in Abuja.

He suggested a more elaborate summit soon where President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet members especially from the Northern part of the country would be in attendance to discuss peace and the way forward.

Nigerians, Mustapha said should reject the norm whereby on few people are enjoying what everyone should.

” Many people are becoming millionaires on a daily basis as a result of direct government intervention. And you have decided to segregate yourself. The government of Nigeria is for every Nigerian.

“Once there is a government policy please take part in it. If you do not, the opportunity will go to a few people.”

He urged Nigerians especially Christians to pray for God’s intervention in the current challenges facing the country.

His words: “This is the way to go. Youths should get involved with issues that are very important to our people. We are the ones that can cause the desired change in this nation.

“If we want to see people rejoicing in our land, the righteous must step out with actions and get into places of authority at different levels irrespective of party affiliation. If I have gotten the details of this meeting, I would have asked everybody in the cabinet of northern extraction to come here and brainstorm. We need to build a platform that would help push what we have received as a mandate from heaven to ensure good governance because it is very important what you are doing.

“I want to encourage you and begin to prepare for a bigger summit. There are challenges and I keep telling people that I do not want to downplay challenges that are confronting us particularly in the northern part of the country. We are the ones that have spiritual mandate to bring solution to these problems. And unless we abide, these challenges will count to deepen. It is my responsibility and yours to arise from our slumber and begin to take our rightful places. So that when we speak, we will be speaking the mind of God and his authority will be established in our lives.

“What do we do to bring solutions to the challenges of our days? Irrespective of our political parties we must discuss the way forward. As the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, (SGF) I have come a long way in politics, I have paid my dues. We must start where we are now. If you are not in any political party you cannot effect any change. Go and register in any political party of your choice. Be a card carrying member of a political party. There are responsibilities that are exercise by government and there are ones that are required of you. We are the wealthiest in terms of resources.”

A former Aso Rock Chaplain during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, Professor Yusuf Obaje, expressed sadness dissatisfaction over the current security situation in the country.

Obaje, who is now the presidential candidate of Advance Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), said: “I am not satisfied with the way this country is been governed. As someone that was there before and I have seen what God enabled us to do those years and then since then the situation has not improved.”

On why he is contesting the presidency instead of given youths a chance, Obaje said:”I think there is a problem in understanding political leadership. There is no country that will say governance is only for the youth or governance is only for adults. A nation is not formed for elders alone or youths alone, they are all needed. We must be active. I will be agree that because there is massive failure let us let the elders out. I have been crying out that there is need for political education in this country especially for the youth.”

The Chairman of Youth Wing Christian Association of Nigeria 19 Northern States and Abuja, Evangelist Musa Misal advised those who have not gotten their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for the 2019 elections to do so.

Misal urged youths to shun violence before, during and after the elections and actively participate in the electoral process as candidates and observers.

He called on all to unite irrespective of ethnic, religious and political differences to make the country a better place.

  • ‘Protest against Obi’s VP nomination suspicious’

The protests by some youths for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to drop Mr peter Obi as its vice presidential candidate has been described as ‘suspicious and diversionary’.

Mr Valentine Obienyem, Media Aide to Obi said this in a statement in Awka on Wednesday.

Some youths under the aegis of “The Northern Youths Leaders Forum” met with Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday and urged Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar to reconsider the choice of Obi or risk losing their support.

Obienyem in his statement entitled “RE: Northern group to Atiku: Drop Obi or forget 2019’ said it was a case of inventing problem where none existed.

The media aide said the announcement of Obi as Atiku’s running mate elicited widespread approval and jubilation because it was adjudged as the best by most Nigerians.

He described Obi as humble, hardworking, knowledgeable, detribalized Nigerian with in-depth knowledge about the economy and conversant with the myriad of problems of the country.

According to Obienyem, any person truthful to himself will agree that never in the history of Nigeria did naming of running mates elicited comparable reactions.

“One is, therefore, at a loss as to the reasons informing the protest. Since leaving office, Obi has been busy visiting schools all over the country, from Cross River to Sokoto.

“Obi has been busy diagnosing the problems of the country and offering solutions.

“Obi has been busy preaching the unity of the country and how good governance will solve the problems in Nigeria, caused by cumulative years of leadership failure that make the protest under review suspicious,” he said.

Obienyem wondered why such protest should hold in Ota and what the intentions of those behind it were.

He said they would not be distracted with such antics but remained focused on efforts to proffer solutions to national economic challenges.

“Why protest in Ota? Who is behind the protest? What does the project intend to achieve? Is it true that the planning of the protest was revealed almost a week ago?

“Why is it that when you have failed to see any fault in Obi, you are bent on inventing one?

“These are necessary questions which any sincere inquirer will deem appropriate to start with.

“We do not need such a distraction now, what we need is joining of hands together as we collectively seek solutions to our problems,” he said.

  • We’ll make Nigeria liveable again, Buhari assures

…Says Murtala, Obasanjo sacrificed for Namibia’s freedom

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said that the sheer desperation that makes Nigerian youths dare both the Sahara Desert and the Mediterranean Sea, all in the bid to take up menial jobs in Europe, is hurting the pride of the country.

The President spoke at State House, Abuja, during a farewell audience with the outgoing High Commissioner of the Republic of Namibia, His Excellency, Peingeondjabi Shipoh.

Noting that there were vast opportunities for Nigeria and Namibia to cooperate in areas like agriculture and trade, President Buhari recalled the sacrifices made for the freedom of Namibia, particularly by the administrations of Generals Murtala Muhammed and Olusegun Obasanjo.

With great potentials in Africa, the President, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, decried illegal exodus to Europe, at grave risk to lives and limbs.

“We will do our best to make our country live-able again,” he promised.

The outgoing High Commissioner, who spent four years and eleven months in Nigeria, said the country had become second home for himself and his family, submitting:

“I enjoyed great support in carrying out my duties. I return home with absolute satisfaction that our two countries are more than ready for intra-African trade and exchange of state visits by the leaders. Our two countries have a lot in common, and Africa can only be developed by Africans themselves.”

Mr. Shipoh wished Nigeria successful general elections in 2019.

  • 2019: I am candidate of the people – Ezekwesili

The presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Mrs Oby Ezekwesili, on Monday said the endorsement of all Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo was needed for her to lead the country in 2019.

Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education, told newsmen in Lagos that it was impossible for her to realise her ambition of becoming Nigeria’s first female president without the collective endorsement of all Nigerians, including Obasanjo.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that she was reacting to a question by one of the journalists on whether she would need the endorsement of Obasanjo, under whom she served as minister, to realise her ambition.

NAN reports the former president had, on Thursday, openly endorsed the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, after a reconciliation meeting in Abeokuta.

Ezekwesili said that democracy was all about popular choice, and she would not leave anyone out of the journey to become the president in 2019.

“I need the endorsement of everyone. I need the endorsement of the youths, the old and the oldest segment of this country who look at the country and ask ‘What happened’?

“I need the endorsement of everyone. I am not leaving anyone out because I am the candidate of the people, so every Nigerian is my electorate.

“There is no power greater than the power of the people. It is a collective. I am the person with the right understanding of governance. I am the people’s choice and I am in the race to win,” she said.

The presidential candidate said the country was faced with serious economic, security and other challenges which required a leader with the right capacity to fix.

Ezekwesili, a former Vice-President of the World Bank, said she had the vision, experience and passion to reposition the country, promising that Nigeria would witness massive turnaround if she was elected.

The candidate said the country’s economy was experiencing what she called ‘fiscal crisis’.

She said there was the need to pursue vigorous sectoral and structural reforms to achieve real economic growth and promote the prosperity of the country.

The candidate said her economic vision for the country was an economy that thrived on diversification and one in which the cost of government was drastically reduced for development.

“We need to get our fiscal crisis sorted out. Fiscal crisis in the sense that the 2017 budget performance report that was released by the Federal Government shows we are in a state of fiscal imbalance.

“The oil revenue is not sufficient to cover the personnel cost of government, and when you think that we are about 186 million people and about two million people in the civil service consume the entire revenue, that tells you we are in post-oil times and we have not yet shown an understanding of the situation. So, there has to be a drastic set of measures.

“On the expenditure side, we have to look at the cost of government. The cost of government was already put on the agenda in the Oronsanye Report. What happened to the implementation?

“We need to update the report and be determined to implement the recommendations therein,” she said.

On the revenue side, Ezekwesili said the country needed to explore an economic strategy to open diverse sources of revenue.

The presidential candidate said there was the need to develop the human capital to drive productivity and competitiveness in the economy.

Ezekwesili said she would drive the prosperity of the country through investment in human capital, if elected.

She decried the precarious security situation in the country, saying creative solutions were needed to address the problem.

The ACPN candidate said she would deploy the right cutting -edge technology and invest massively in security institutions to address the problem, if elected.

She said critical areas like education, health and environment would receive the desired attention, to improve livelihoods and life expectancy.

Ezekwesili said the idea of restructuring was being variously defined by politicians to suit their agenda and gain cheap popularity.

The candidate said the only form of restructuring that she would pursue, if elected, was one that would guarantee prosperity, equality, opportunities and other things expected of a working nation.

She said her quest for presidency was gaining momentum by the day with many people volunteering support, and expressed the optimism that she would win.

  • Sons of malice

It was a mockery of a familiar scripture. “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.” So Atiku Abubakar and Olusegun Obasanjo could sit together, after the firestorm of laughter a few years ago. They now see themselves as sons of God because they sat together to fulfil Atiku’s ancient ambition and pursue Obasanjo’s grudge. Both grudge and ambition embrace in the enmity of Muhammadu Buhari. In pidgin English, we call it jiga belle. Where is God here but bad blood, a coalescence of the sons of malice.

So one said “I dey laugh o” and the other lashed back with “I dey laugh too o.” It was exciting headline fair for newspapers. When both foes folded into friendship, one thing was especially missing in the Abeokuta setting: laughter. Both miens bowed in frowns as though it was no happy moment, except Bishop Oyedepo, whose face kindled with a doubtful holy halo.

Others present were Bishop Kukah, Gumi and, of course, the familiar Obj acolytes of Bode George, Ayo Adebanjo, et al. Adebanjo, the expiring politician as fuddy-duddy, once called Obj a whited sepulchre. So, what a necromantic hug he had with Obj. An Adebanjo, a nonagenarian, embracing Obj the corpse?

Obasanjo clearly needed Atiku to save him from his self-spun scorn, from the disaster of his political party, the ADC. Its first litmus test was Osun, and Obj’s party was a yawning no-show. The Owu chief has collapsed into silence since he boasted he would craft an alliance into a party that would faze Buhari out of the throne. He needed Atiku as a prop, so he won’t fall facedown. His face is already down. The Owu chief has crashed, his body parts all over the floor like glass shards. Atiku is pretending to help him put them back together.

The Owu chief also wants to pay back Buhari for snubbing him. He the Owu chief, the ebora. He who, in an air of remorseful royalty, tore his party card to enthrone him. He who campaigned and teamed up with his enemies, including his nemesis like Asiwaju Tinubu, in order to earn him a furry path to victory. Yet, Buhari dared to toss him aside. That is the megalomania of the Owu chief. He forgets two things. One, Buhari would have won without him. He came on board when victory flashed in the horizon. He has little electoral value. They made him a superfine passenger in the campaign, a flattery he could not know. Two, that his pedigree as kingmaker has always made him a little lower than an angel. Under Jonathan, he felt pooh-poohed. Yar’Adua never played servile to him. Buhari, a junior in the army, forgot to inflate him with the deserved salute.

Atiku, the man he foreswore in the name of the Almighty to never forgive, suddenly turned Obj into a tender soul. This is Obj born again indeed. The man who never forgave anybody unless they lost their offices. Ask Okadigbo in his grave. Ask Wabara about his disgrace. Ask Audu Ogbe, who is back to grace as minister. The same Obj is now rewarding an arch foe by promising him the biggest office in the land. He called Atiku our next president. This is malice as desperado.

This is no forgiveness. It is opportunism. The presence of clerics did not even give it the air of a divine blessing. All three were not there on behalf of the Ancient of Days but to settle ancient scores. Gumi comes from an old, even atavistic warfare with the Buhari clan. So, cancel the love of the people from his so-called reconciliation. Bishop Kukah has not hidden his regret over the sacking of his beloved Jonathan and his abhorrence of the probe of that era. He once asked the government to “move on.” Bishop Oyedepo loved Jonathan and he hardly accused his regime even on the pulpit of corruption while drumming up support for him and welcoming him to Canaanland. He loved his time as the president’s pastor.

There is a wistfulness to these holy presences. Holy men in scripture have never been known to be perfect, and they have made mistakes from Abraham to Jonah, even Peter and self-confessed Paul. Hence Paul warned us not to heed even if they or an angel teaches what was not written. “Brethren, pray for us,” he once pleaded. So, in that gathering, we had the cleric, the money bag, and the politician. Where is the hope? I don’t know how they want to manage the optics if they say to their faithful that they are not partisan.

Hence Bertolt Brecht, in his play Mother Courage, wrote, “Here they sit, one with his faith and the other with his cash box. Dunno which is more dangerous.”

Obj also highlighted the virtue of Atiku as a business man. Some are saying that he will do well there because he is one of the great men of business today in the land. I like more elaboration on this. I want those who make this claim to explain to us if he made his money the same way business men like Gates, Fajemirokun, Dangote, Odutola, Ojukwu (the rebel’s father) or Dantata made their money. We want to know if he doubled money with a cutting-edge imagination or by taking advantage of the footloose rules in corporate Nigeria. Is he a racketeer as the Buhari crowd calls him, or a manager? Or are they just tarring him as the candidate of corruption fighting back? It will be instructive to hear Atiku speak on how he will curb corruption. Waiting!

Again, Atiku will have to free himself from all the scandals: Siemens, PTDF, Haliburton, et al. Not just the scandal but the perception, which is even more potent. He might be innocent, but the public has its arbitrary court where judges and jury are on the street. If he does not want to brandish his mercantile credentials as his virtues, we can drop those and look elsewhere for his strength in 2019. Is there a correlation between those scandals and his wealth? This is election season and we need to scrutinise and let no one bamboozle us. Many Nigerian wealthy men are not classic geniuses of commerce but carpet baggers and opportunists. It is no qualification for turning a poor country into a commercial behemoth.

Few business men have done well as presidents anywhere. Trump is riding on the steam of Obama economy. Even Trump has just been exposed as a carpet bagger who defrauded his way into his billions by tax subterfuges. He is being investigated. The other businessman as US president, Herbert Hoover, presided over The Great Depression leaking jobs and joy. Roosevelt, a soldier, succeeded him and brought back the boom. Clearly Buhari has not shown himself to be a Roosevelt in turning the economy around. But being a businessman is no sure-fire ticket to success. The US founding fathers ignored the wealthy man John Jay, who thought his wealth would win over his peers and make him the country’s pioneer president. They picked George Washington, the soldier-statesman.

Atiku has also defined himself, probably partly in response to my column last week, by saying he is a living candidate while Buhari is dull. Buhari is anaemic for sure, especially on camera. But in camera, those who know him say he turns the ribs with his jokes. But Atiku is no better. His face is like what Americans called their Soviet counterparts in the Cold War era: doll within doll. • Obasanjo has right to support any candidate, says Falana

Activist lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has said that it is the right of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to support any presidential candidate of his choice.

Reacting to his recent endorsement of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, he said Obasanjo has a constitutional right to do so.

“Former President Obasanjo has a constitutional right to support any presidential candidate of his choice.

“It is however hoped that God will forgive him for supporting Alhaji Atiku Abubakar,” he said.
