Oke: It’s my time to govern Ondo

Chief Olusola Oke (SAN) is an Ondo State governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). In this interview with reporters in Akure, the state capital. He speaks about his aspiration and why he believes he is destined to govern the state. OSAGIE OTABOR reports

The reasons I contested then are still prevailing and multiplying, and I will be failing in my responsibilities if I do not come out at this time. The state is blessed with abundant natural, mineral, agricultural and human resources. Yet today, it is one state that is under the heavy burden of backwardness and poverty. We are in deficit in many respects; in education, health and other critical sectors.  I witnessed this recently when I got involved in a motor accident and was taken to the trauma centre. My experience during the very short stay there showed that Ondo State is far from the starting point in the health sector. In terms of infrastructure, we cannot boast of any dualized 10-kilometre road in this state. I am running again because of the gap in development and unemployment is increasing every day. We produce only 20,000 graduates yearly, yet not up to three per cent of them are absorbed. In the beginning, in this state, there was Ifon Ceramic, the Cocoa Industry in Ile-Oluji, there was Oluwa Glass, Okitipupa Oil Mill and a host of others that were complementing the efforts of the government in terms of employment. All these have become history and new ones are not coming up. Ondo has remained a civil service economy and our lives depend massively on transfer payment and whoever money is transferred to adds no value to the society because it is not money earned from productivity. Today, Ondo State is like a baby crying looking for a saviour; it’s looking for a leader that would put a new song on the lips of the people.

What are your plans to change the fortunes of the state for the better?

Ondo State is in a state of war and needs a leader with direction and mission, who will be able to change the narrative. If you go to states that were created long after Ondo State, you would see the level of development in terms of infrastructure and human capital development. Ondo State has all the resources and we cannot continue to use the same formula and expect different results. What is being done all the time is to develop the cosmopolitan centres or the township roads. but the rural areas, which are the bedrock of our economy are neglected. What have we done since 1976? The rural areas remain locked. I believe that the government can open opportunities in a vast area of resources. Our mineral resources are there; the coastal resources are there; most of the land map process Dr Olusegun Agagu initiated has been abandoned, and the Owena Multipurpose Dam which could have provided many people water was abandoned. I was told the government has to push a $200 million loan to re-jig it; about 50 per cent has been paid and it has been abandoned. The 11,000-capacity stadium was abandoned, and the cassava processing in the Ikoya project would have added value to the economy, generated employment, and generated income for people, all these projects were abandoned and new ones were not implemented.

The state is in total decay and collapse, all of this I believe a man with vision, with dreams and who has been part of it will understand the feelings of the people, and God has allowed me to acquire experience which I can bring up. I believe I am the right man for the job.

The leadership of the APC at the national level appears interested in who picks the party’s ticket. Do you think you have a chance?

There is no doubt the national leadership of the party would be interested. If this contest were to be influenced and determined locally, I probably would not have to sweat because I believe very strongly that the people of Ondo State are craving my leadership. But, it involves people from outside this state. Nevertheless, I want to believe that President Bola Tinubu who is the leader of the party and the president of Nigeria, is one man who would not sit in the comfort of his private room and drop or pick an aspirant or candidate for the party; he would consider acceptability, capacity and many factors that would not only secure victory for the party but also make it excel in governance. I am confident that when these factors are put on the table, I am higher than other aspirants.

So, what do you think will determine the choice of the next Ondo State governor?

I believe very strongly that what would determine the next governor of this state would be aspirants’ antecedents; what you have been able to do with power when you have the opportunity, your level of acceptability and your contribution to the party. When the late Akeredolu was contesting, I supported him; the current president knows my virtues. If I am given the ticket today, there would be no opposition in Ondo State, the PDP would rally their support for me, and the Labour Party would also do the same.

You seem to be optimistic about winning but if you fail….

I am sure I will win, but in the most unlikely event, if I do not win, I am a party man, I will accept the will of God and face my profession. I know the people desire my service, if the accident did not truncate my ambition, then I believe that it is a will of God for me to contest, I am talking about the primary because I am very optimistic that I cannot lose the general election in Ondo State.

What are your plans to restore power to the communities in Ondo South Senatorial District, which have been without electricity for some time?

It is a very sad situation that almost the entire Ondo South has been in the dark for decades. As a leader, I have brought this to the attention of those who are in the position of finding a solution to it.

I was very instrumental in the power project in Omotoso. Unfortunately, though that project has been concluded, distribution remains an issue; all the roads to distribute have been bad. We would continue to agitate and we have made recommendations to OSOPADEC, to do something. We have also spoken to Power Holding Company. It is easier to influence these things when you are in government.

I remember that it was part of the campaign of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim before he was elected the lawmaker representing the constituency. I have not spoken to him recently to know what step he has taken in that regard, but I can tell you it is part of my plan if God willing, I get the mandate.

What gives you the confidence that you can unseat the incumbent who is also in this race?

The death of the late Governor Akeredolu has caused elevation and de-elevation. I want to say that of all the aspirants eyeing the governorship seat, I am the only one with structure. It is not going to be who has more money or who has the largest resources; it is going to be the man who can do the job for the people of Ondo State.

What mode of primary do you think the party might adopt in picking its candidate?

We have always elected our candidate in APC through an indirect primary. It has fairly worked with us here; we are yet to know the mode of primary that would be adopted.

Ondo 2024: Why Oke is yet to kick-start consultation

The Oke for Sunshine Forum (OSF), a group within the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has explained why Olusola Oke is yet to begin consultation on his aspiration to become the next governor of the state.

The forum’s coordinator, Olushola Akintade, in a statement on Friday, February 23, said  that Oke would start meeting people after the burial of former Ondo state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

According to Akintade, Oke was still mourning the death of Akeredolu.

He mentioned that Oke and the deceased governor were contemporaries in their careers as well as friends and political allies.

He also criticised other candidates for not waiting until Akeredolu was buried before starting their campaign.

He said: “So many people don’t know the relationship between our principal and the late Governor Akeredolu. Aside from being close friends and political associates, they are also professional colleagues who shared so many things before his death. It will be disrespectful to the memory of the dead if his close friend is seen running around to succeed him when his body is yet to be interred.”

He assured that after the final burial of the late Akeredolu, Oke would address a world press conference where his programmes and manifesto for the state would be rolled out.

“He is the biggest masquerade as far as the Ondo state governorship election is concerned. So, everybody is waiting for him to declare. At the appropriate time, he will do so, and he will do it in a more civilised way. He can not just jump into a contest as big as the governorship without informing the people he wants to serve. The actions of other aspirants are uncalled for and it shows desperation. Why can’t they just wait till late Akeredolu is buried,” he said.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the Ondo State Governorship election for November 16, 2024.

Ondo 2024: This is my appointed time to become governor, Oke declares

A governorship aspirant of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state, Olusola Oke, has declared that 2024 was appointed by God for him to emerge the governor of the Sunshine state.

This year’s election would be the fourth time Oke would be making attempt to govern the state.

In 2012, Oke was a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party. In 2016, he left the PDP to contest on the platform of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and on 2020, he lost the APC primary to late former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

Oke said he knew Ondo state people desired his services.

He, however, stated that he would not defect from the APC if he lost the party primary.

Oke, who spoke at a media parley in Akure, said he would prefer an indirect form of party primary and would not kick  against any mode of primary picked by the party’s leadership.

He said: “The death of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu caused elevation and de-elevation, parity and disparity in the politics and governance of Ondo state. But the truth of the matter is that what would influence the leadership is who can do the job.

“Before late Akeredolu travelled out, I met him in Ibadan to brief him about my aspiration and desire to succeed him and when I came back to this state, I went straight to Lucky Aiyedatiwa to brief him too that I will be running for the position of governor and he told me that it didn’t come to him as a breaking news, that he knew that I had been on this and that I am very serious about it. But he (Aiyedatiwa) has not briefed me about his own ambition.

“But let me say that my vision to govern Ondo state is for an appointed time.

“Ondo state needs a leader with vision, direction with sense of commitment not coming to fill any gap but to serve the people and what I’m looking for now is legacy because whether we like it or not, Ondo state is in its state of war at this moment and it needs a dogged and government fighter with a mission, direction and vision who will be able to change the narrative of our dear state.

“I believe that government can open opportunity towards tapping our minerals resources, which will even generated employment that will reduce criminality in our society and even generated income for our people. So the state is in its total state of collapse.

“I had all my education in the rural area, I am a part of the people, I understand their suffering, I had suffered a lot with them, my involvement in the recent accident had nothing to do other than bad road. So having suffered with them, I belief I am the right man for the job.”

How I escaped death narrowly – APC chieftain Olusola Oke

A gubernatorial aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in the 2024 Ondo state governorship election, Olusola Oke, has shared the story of his miraculous survival after being involved in an accident four months ago.

He said he ‘died’ after he was flung out of the vehicle onto the highway but was returned to life by God.

Oke, who spoke at a special thanksgiving service in Akure, the Ondo state capital, said he had all his surgeries performed in Nigeria.

He said doctors in the country were doing the mighty job but they needed an enabling environment and encouragement.

Oke said his aides’ escape was also miraculous as they got out of the vehicle a few minutes before it engulfed in flames.

He said: “The journey I embarked on to the southern part of Ondo state, on Friday, August 25, 2023, was like any other ones I made in the past, but turned out to be a memorable watershed, as I had a very close shave with death.

“Due to the recklessness of a road user, a vehicle coming from the opposite direction, and dangerously overtook another vehicle at a sharp bend, needed to escape having a head-on collision with the vehicle I was travelling in.

“In an attempt by my driver to avert running to it, he manoeuvred the vehicle, very swiftly but reasonably timely, but the dislocated vehicle that we were trying to escape, in an ordinarily inexplicable way, hit our vehicle from the rear, forcing it to somersault about three times.

“In the process of this auto gymnastics, I was flung out of the vehicle, leaving my driver, personal assistant, and the security detail trapped inside. By the time my driver and others managed to squeeze themselves out of the wreck of the vehicle, I was lying flat in the middle of the road. Mercifully, there were no vehicles driving past the very busy road at that moment, and God saved me from being run over and crushed to death.

“Just before my driver and others got out of the vehicle, it caught fire, and got razed down after their miraculous escape.

“I want to proclaim the authority of God. I was close to the mortuary. I said I must assemble people to proclaim the goodness of God. He intervened in my life. I will continue service to humanity. God knows I have not concluded my assignment on earth.”

The event was attended by the acting governor of the state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and other dignitaries.

  • ‘2019 is about going to Egypt or Canaanland’

The Southwest Director Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organisation Olusola Oke has said described the 2019 general elections as a choice between going back to ‘Egypt’ or ahead to ‘Canaanland’

Oke spoke in Ibadan on Thursday while fielding questions from reporters after paying a private visit to Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi in his Agodi Secretariat office.

While emphasising the readiness of the region to support President Muhammadu Buhari reelection bid, Oke explained Buhari has devoted the past three years to laying the foundation for the country to move on.

This, he said, might be difficult for another person to erect the right structure for the next level of development.

He noted that in the coming election, the Yorubas will largely decide who the next President would be because of the region’s understanding of the country and its dynamics more than other regions.

According to him: “The Southwest is very critical and very strategic to APC and the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“It is critical because of its voting strength, its role in the emergence of this government. We have a pride of place and we want to build on that.

“In this election, the Yorubas’ will decide who will be the President of this country and because we understand Nigeria and the dynamics more than any other region.

“It is clear that there are two options. One option is to go back to Egypt and other option is to go ahead to Canaan land.

“What has been our problem all this while is lack of proper foundation for our country to be transformed.”

He added: “If the PDP win, power will depart from the Southwest, if the APC win means power will remain in the Southwest.

“Power defines many things, we know the many projects ongoing in the Southwest and we don’t want them to stop. Yoruba will go for Buhari.

“This campaign is about power residing here in the Southwest. Obasanjo left power about 10 years ago and what we have now in the South is the Vice President and that is residing in Yoruba land.

“We want power to reside here and thereafter, we will continue to be critical in the determination of the leadership of Nigeria.

Speaking on the crisis rocking the state chapter of APC, Oke said: “The divisions are not about Buhari but about individual interests.

“We are not animals and can appreciate what is good and compete for it.

“If what is good is not available in quantum, there is bound to be conflicts. But, if you listen to every dissent, they still tell you that they will do Buhari.”

  • We hold Oke in high esteem, says Ondo APC

The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday faulted the report credited to a frontline chieftain of the party in the state, Chief Olusola Oke (SAN), and his followers that they had suffered humiliation and rejection in the party.

The party said it was surprised by the claim.

It added: “Chief Oke, a notable personality with vast political experience, is well respected by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and the APC executives in the state.”

APC noted that as a colleague in the legal profession, Akeredolu regards Oke as a worthy partner in the quest for the political and economic emancipation of Ondo State.

A statement by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Alex Kalejaye said: “It is expedient to state in a crystal clear language that the two leaders are both eager to see the development of the Sunshine State and are mostly in touch, particularly on matters that border on the wellbeing of the party and the state.

“At the level of the party, the State Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, has always displayed profound respect and appreciation for the political exploits and professional attainment of Chief Oke.

“Adetimehin believes very strongly that the fortune of APC in Ondo State would be greatly enhanced with the political experience of Oke as well as his followers at the party’s disposal.

“This is readily explained by the quick response and visit to Chief Oke’s country home in Okitipupa by the State Working Committee (SWC), led by Adetimehin, to encourage him over the recent loss of his elder brother.

“We want to appeal that Oke and his followers exercise some patience while the leader of the party in the state, Governor Akeredolu, looks into some of the issues raised with a view to addressing them.”

The statement said it needed all leaders to work together in order to strengthen the party and ensure a resounding victory for President Muhammadu Buhari and other APC candidates in next year’s general elections.

  • I have no intention to return to PDP – Oke

The governorship candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) in the 2016 poll, Chief Olusola Oke (SAN) has refuted the report that he was planning to return to the People’s Democratic Party(PDP).

Oke who is the former National Legal Adviser of the PDP before joining  the All Progressives Congress (APC) shortly  before 2015 general election won by President Muhammadu Buhari, later moved to the AD and contested against Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the then APC candidate.

He however retraced his step and returned to APC at a rally in Akure late last year.

A statement by his media aide, Rotimi Ogunleye said “There is no iota of truth in the story. It is a story planted by his detractors.

“Regardless of the unfavourable experience in APC as claimed by the planted story, I have no intention of leaving APC either for PDP or any other party for now. Politics is in the air and one will understand the wicked intention behind the planted story especially at this time.

While appreciating the information dissemination role of the media,Oke was of the opinion that the profession demands the right of confirmation of information and event before their reportage.

The statement said “We think any information about the person, office, profession or vocation of Chief Oke should be confirmed before any publication of such information as he is accessible and would have thought the said news will be confirmed before its needless reportage.

“We therefore advise the public to please disregard the news as it only represents the narrow intention of the minds behind the planted story”.

Elizade University: Ex-VC granted bail after 11 days in prison

The former Vice Chancellor of Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin in Ifedore Local Government area of Ondo State, Prof. Adekunle Oloyede was yesterday re-arraigned on fresh seven-count charge of stealing, obtaining money under false pretence and felony.

Oloyede, has been in detention for the past 11 days over the allegation leveled against him by the proprietor of the Elizade University, Chief Michael Ade Ojo.

The former VC however pleaded not guilty to the new seven-count charge preferred against him by the office of the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

During the previous sitting, he was given stringent bail conditions including the deposit of $250.000.00, but on Thursday, the court granted him bail with moderate terms.

The charges according to Mrs Kolade Oba who represented the Attorney General read “That you Prof Adekunle Oloyede, m,  on or about the 20th day of January 2015 at about 10:30am in Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin in the Akure Magisterial District did conspire with three others at large to commit a felony to wit, stealing and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

“That you Prof Adekunle Oloyede, m, on or about 10:30am in Elizade University, Ilara-Mokin in the Akure Magisterial District fraudulently induced and obtained the sum of $720, 000 from Mikeade Investment Limited for Duro Global Property Limited and two others at large under the pretext of constructing a 500 bed space hostel at Elizade University using panel building technology from Australia to and punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State 2006.

“That you Prof Adekunle Oloyede, m, on or about 6th July 2015 at about 10:30am in Elizade University Ilara-Mokin in the Akure Magisterial District fraudulently induced and obtained the sum of $650, 000 from Mikeade Investment Limited under the pretext of constructing the same 500 bed space hostel at Elizade University using panel building technology from Australia contrary to and punishable under Section 419 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State 2006.”

However, the lawyer to the accused, Olusola Oke who asked for bail on liberal terms said the charges are “distorted and not likely to be true.”

Oke with four other lawyers told Magistrate Ayodeji Akinsanya that the allegations were unsubstantiated.

He said“ What we are trying to show is that there is no way the charges can be substantiated. No matter the flamboyance displayed in the charge, the professor is entitled to bail.”

According to him, since the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty, he would be willing and ready to answer the charges preferred against him.

In his ruling, the court granted the VC bail at the sum of N2million and two sureties in like sum. He should also deposit his two international passports to the court registrar.

The case was adjourned to February 7 and 8 for trial.

Ondo decides: Card reader rejects Mimiko’s thumbprint

There was mild drama on Saturday in Ondo town as the card reader deployed for the governorship election rejected Gov. Olusegun Mimiko’s thumbprint when he wanted to vote at his Ward 7, Unit 20 Polling Unit in Ondo West Local Government Area.

Mimiko had to fill the incident form before he was finally allowed to cast his vote at about 12 noon.

Speaking shortly after casting his vote, the governor said he would resist any attempt to manipulate the election in favour of any political party.

“Ondo people will not allow any form of rigging or manipulation through the card reader or any other form,” he said.

No fewer than 1,280,580 voters with Permanent Voter Cards would decide who the governor would be out of the 28 contestants in Saturday’s governorship election.

Although 1,659,186 voters were registered for the election, 378,606 did not turn up to collect their PVCs.

The major contestants include Mr Eyitayo Jegede of the PDP, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu of the APC, Dr Olu Agunloye of the Social Democratic Party and Olusola Oke of the Alliance for Democracy.

Oke hails Ondo people, says he won’t disappoint them

The Olusola Oke Campaign Organisation has on behalf of the Candidate of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) Chief Olusola Oke and his deputy, Alhaji Ganny Dauda thanked the people of Ondo State for their show of solidarity for trooping out en-mass to witness the presentation of the AD flags and official presentation to the people during the flag off rally in Akure on Monday.

The Director General of the Campaign Organisation, Mr Bola Ilori, while expressing Oke’s profound gratitude to the people for the unprecedented crowd that thronged the Democracy Park, Akure venue of the epoch making event assured the people that Chief Oke would not disappoint when he assumes office as Governor.

His words:” We want to sincerely thank you all good people of Ondo State for your love, affection and show of solidarity before during and after the flag off. We are simply overwhelmed that you all in your scores braved the hot sun to show solidarity for your son, Chief Olusola Oke.

“As he (Oke) has assured you, he will not fail you, he will deliver on his promises; under his watch, Ondo State will fare better. Rest assured that he will make life abundant for all and sundry.”

While reacting to the destruction of the billboards, banners and posters of Chief Oke by miscreants loyal to the Olusegun Mimiko faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) moments after the Flag off ended, Ilori described the act as an admission of failure by the ruling Party.

He warned those behind the dastard act not to take the people of Ondo State for granted saying if they do not desist, they would meet their waterloo.

Also, reacting to the insinuations by the All Peoples Congress (APC) that the AD rented crowd to grace its flag off rally, the DG urged them to wait till November 26, 2016 when reality will dawn on them after losing the election.

“We will not dignify them with any response other than to say that the people of have chosen Olusola Oke and this they have demonstrated by turning out in an unprecedented crowd hitherto unknown in the annals of this state.

“This is why they are afraid and has made the Olusola Oke their sole manifesto instead of canvassing for votes from the people as the AD is vigorously doing in Ondo State,” he posited.
