IPI honour: Abiodun lauds DSS DG for upholding press freedom

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has congratulated the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, on his commendation by the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI), describing the recognition as a strong affirmation of professionalism and respect for democratic values.

The honour was bestowed on the DSS Director-General at the IPI’s annual conference held earlier this month in Abuja, an event at which President Bola Tinubu also acknowledged the evolving and more constructive relationship between the nation’s security agencies and the media.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abeokuta, Abiodun said the award was particularly significant because it came from a respected press institution known for its critical role as society’s watchdog.

According to the governor, the recognition represents an “unassailable verdict” on Mr Ajayi’s commitment to human rights, press freedom and the rule of law, noting that such an endorsement from the media community carries profound meaning.

Governor Abiodun observed that since his appointment, the DSS Director-General has anchored his leadership on professionalism, decency and discipline, while fostering a relationship of mutual respect between the security services and journalists.

“The award conferred on the DSS Director-General by the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute is a clear acknowledgement of his efforts in promoting constructive engagement between the media and security agencies, with the ultimate aim of building a united and resilient front against insecurity,” the governor said.

He added that the recognition underscores the importance of a free, vibrant and responsible media in a democratic society, stressing that national development thrives where journalists can operate without fear of repression.

“This honour is well deserved. It serves as an inspiration to public officials across the country to uphold transparency, accountability and good governance,” Abiodun noted.

The governor expressed confidence that the cordial relationship between the Ogun State Government and the Department of State Services would continue to strengthen, while wishing Mr. Ajayi greater success in his mission to safeguard national security in line with democratic principles.

DSS DG gets kudos for human rights reforms

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has praised the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, for ensuring “a pleasantly surprising and deeply encouraging shift” in the agency’s operational philosophy.

HURIWA particularly hailed the secret police for its respect for human rights, compliance with the rule of law, and compensation for victims of wrongful detention under Mr. Ajayi.

HURIWA, which for 18 years, has consistently called for accountability, transparency, and strict adherence to democratic norms by Nigeria’s security services, said it was pleasantly surprised by the proactive reforms being implemented by the new DSS helmsman.

Speaking through its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA described the situation as a welcome development.

The organization said it was exciting to see the DSS, long criticised by the human rights community for opacity and high-handedness, now taking meaningful and bold steps to reform its operations and institutional culture.

“It is not every day that the human rights community in Nigeria is compelled to acknowledge progress within a security agency that has historically been associated with arbitrary detention and abuse of power,” Onwubiko said.

“But in this case, we must give credit where it is due. Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi has not only started well — he has already exceeded expectations in some key areas.”

TSAX showcases musical depth with High Altitude EP

UK-based Nigerian saxophonist Oluwatosin Ajayi aka TSAX has released a new instrumental EP entitled ‘High Altitude,’ which offers listeners a fresh take on contemporary jazz.

The three-track project blends melody, emotion, and structure in a way that reflects TSAX’s growing presence in the UK’s creative scene. Rather than relying on complex arrangements, the EP focuses on clear themes and thoughtful execution.

The opening track, ‘Encore,’ sets the tone with gentle saxophone leads, ambient harmonies, and soft piano touches that create a calm and reflective atmosphere. The song introduces a sense of growth and aspiration that runs through the entire project.

‘Resonance,’ the second track, shifts slightly in rhythm and intensity. TSAX uses tone and phrasing to express deeper emotions, allowing the saxophone to speak in place of words. The piece carries a steady flow, giving listeners a glimpse into personal expression through instrumental music.

The final track, ‘Amen (Prayer Without Words),’ serves as a spiritual closer. Stripped of heavy instrumentation, the piece relies almost entirely on the raw sound of the saxophone. It offers a moment of stillness and reflection, with a tone that suggests affirmation and hope.

Speaking through his work, TSAX joins a wave of instrumental musicians creating original jazz that pushes beyond commercial boundaries. High Altitude highlights his commitment to contributing to the jazz tradition while engaging with new audiences both in the UK and internationally.
