PenCom floats PenCare for retirees to access free healthcare services

The Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Omolola Oloworaran, has said the commission had put in place a framework that will ensure that retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme have access to affordable and quality free healthcare services.

Oloworaran spoke at the weekend in Abuja during the inauguration of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Pension Industry Healthcare Initiative.

Mohammed Kabir Ahmed was announced as the board chairman of the initiative.

The PenCom director general described the development as a testament to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to building a Nigeria where those who have devoted their productive years to national service are assured of healthy, dignified, and secure retirement.

She said the health initiative places the nation on the path towards a pension system that not only safeguards the financial security of workers but also protects their health, dignity, and well-being in retirement.

The PenCare Initiative represents a visionary partnership between the PenCom and licensed pension operators, a union of expertise, compassion, and responsibility.

Oloworaran said: “We are not merely inaugurating a board; we are inaugurating hope. We are setting in motion a new chapter in Nigeria’s journey towards inclusive, compassionate, and globally competitive social security. This vision draws directly from the leadership and policy direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration has consistently emphasised the need to strengthen Nigeria’s social protection systems and improve the quality of life for all citizens, especially our senior citizens.

“It was under the President’s clear directive that the National Pension Commission was tasked to put in place a framework that ensures retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme have access to affordable and quality healthcare.

“Through PenCare, we are building a structure that aligns with international best practices in social protection, mirroring the integrated healthcare and pension systems of advanced economies, yet designed to meet the realities and aspirations of our nation.

“This initiative is both a social responsibility and a statement of leadership, demonstrating that Nigeria’s pension industry is ready to set standards and not merely follow them.

“The Board of Trustees, being inaugurated, carries a crucial responsibility to provide strategic oversight and direction for the PenCare Initiative by formulating policies and operational frameworks to ensure retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme have access to affordable, quality healthcare.”

Other aspects of PenCare are: Selecting, accrediting, and supervising Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) and other healthcare providers in accordance with established standards and national health regulations, ensuring transparency, accountability, and sustainability in the management of PenCare’s funds and partnerships, and promoting collaboration and advocacy across the pension and healthcare sectors to strengthen access, service delivery, and the overall welfare of the retirees.

The PenCom director general stated that members of the PenCare BoT were carefully selected for their integrity, competence, and deep professional experience in the pension, health, and financial sectors.

Addressing the BoT members during the event, Oloworaran said: “As trustees, you hold a sacred public trust to steer this initiative towards tangible impact and to ensure that it becomes a model of effective partnership between public institutions and private operators.

“We are fully aware that the task ahead is significant. The challenges of rising healthcare costs and an ageing population are real, but so too are the opportunities to innovate and lead. As a nation, we can redefine how a nation cares for its retirees, ensuring that the end of active service marks not a decline, but a season of dignity and well-being,” she said.

Oloworaran hailed members of the BoT on the Pension Industry Health Care Initiative, the commission’s leadership team, and all its industry partners for their tireless efforts and commitment. “Your collective work reflects the spirit of service, innovation, and integrity that defines the National Pension Commission,” she added.

Oloworaran told the committee’s members to do their job with dedication and become reference points.

The PenCom DG urged the committee members to seek guidance through broader vision, ensure a pension industry that is financially sound, socially responsible, and people-centred, one that manages not only funds but also futures, that invests not only in assets but in people, the journey ahead will demand creativity, collaboration, and courage, but together, we will all set a new global benchmark for inclusive social protection.

“To the retirees and RSA contributors, PenCare is our promise to you. It is a tangible demonstration that the pension industry, under the leadership and policy direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, cares not only about your savings but also about your well-being,” Oloworarn stated.

AI to assist, not threaten workers’ retirement, says PenCom DG

The Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, has assured Nigerian workers that the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital transformation will not endanger their retirement security but rather strengthen it through smarter, technology-driven pension systems.

This was as she called on all stakeholders to rethink policies, processes, and protections for workers in the modern economy amid the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Oloworaran made the call during the 2025 Conference of the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN),with the theme: “Future of Work in the Era of Artificial Intelligence: A Wake-Up Call for Stakeholders,” held at the Golden Tulip Conference Hall, Jericho, Ibadan.

“As the world of work evolves under the influence of artificial intelligence and digital transformation, it becomes imperative for all stakeholders (government, labour, and industry) to rethink policies, processes, and protections for workers in the modern economy.

“The conversation you are leading today is therefore crucial to shaping a fair and inclusive future of work in Nigeria.”

Oloworaran explained that PenCom had already embraced the digital shift through the launch of Pension Revolution 2.0, an ambitious reform initiative designed to leverage technology to modernise Nigeria’s pension system.

“At PenCom, we recognise that technological innovation is no longer optional, it is the foundation of sustainability in pension administration.

“This understanding inspired the launch of Pension Revolution 2.0, an ambitious reform agenda designed to leverage technology and transform the pension landscape.

“Just as artificial intelligence is transforming work patterns, Pension Revolution 2.0 is reshaping the retirement system, making it smarter, faster, and more responsive to contributors’ needs.

“By automating the issuance of Pension Clearance Certificates and streamlining benefits processing, PenCom is creating a pension system that aligns with the realities of today’s digital economy. “The redesigned Personal Pension Plan (PPP) will be technologically enabled to facilitate seamless onboarding of contributors.”

She commended the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria for their consistent advocacy for workers’ welfare, describing them as vital partners in the Commission’s mission to promote a sustainable and inclusive pension system.

“PenCom considers LAWAN and indeed all media professionals in this space as critical partners in our mission to build a reliable, inclusive, and sustainable pension system for Nigeria.

“We appreciate your efforts in raising awareness about pension reforms (like our Pension Revolution 2.0), and we value the constructive feedback you provide from the field.”

Oloworaran pledged that PenCom would continue to collaborate with the media and other stakeholders to ensure Nigerian workers are fully prepared for the opportunities and challenges of the AI era.

Nigerian newspapers owe journalists N1.3b in pensions, says PenCom

The Director-General of the National Pension Commission, Omolola Oloworaran, said newspaper organisations in Nigeria owe retired journalists more than N1.3 billion in unpaid pension contributions.

This was revealed in a statement yesterday by PenCom Director-General, Ms. Oloworaran when she led a PenCom delegation to the Nigerian Press Council. She expressed concerns over the widespread non-compliance with the Pension Reform Act 2014 (PRA 2014) among media establishments.

According to the statement, PenCom and the NPC have entered into a strategic collaboration to prevail on newspaper organisations to settle the huge pension liabilities owed to their employees. The PRA 2014 mandates that employers remit monthly pension contributions into employees’ Retirement Savings Accounts not later than seven days after salary payments.

The PenCom chief said many media outlets failed to adhere to this requirement, prompting the Commission to assign recovery agents to audit and determine their outstanding pension debts and applicable penalties.

Ms Oloworaran said that journalists deserve to retire with dignity as they play a vital role in ensuring accountability across the public and private sectors, adding that media organisations, in turn, must lead by example by fulfilling pension obligations to their employees.

She appealed to the NPC for support in advocating compliance within the media sector, as pension contributions were a critical safeguard against old-age poverty.

The NPC Executive Secretary, Dili Ezughah, reiterated the Council’s support and commitment to addressing the issues, assuring that the NPC would escalate the matter to relevant stakeholders, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the Nigerian Guild of Editors.

He highlighting the significant impact of unpaid pensions on journalists’ welfare, saying the failure of media organisations to remit pension contributions was a significant challenge in the Nigerian media industry.
