    Gender Rights Advocate Omowumi Ogunrotimi honoured with 2025 Global Citizen Prize

    Gender rights advocate and lawyer, Omowumi Ogunrotimi, has been honoured with the prestigious 2025 Global Citizen Prize at an award ceremony held in New York City recently.

    Omowumi was celebrated alongside other distinguished changemakers: Valeriia Rachynska of Ukraine, Taily Terena of Brazil, and Lydia Amenyaglo of Ghana, in recognition of their outstanding contributions to advancing equity and justice in their respective communities.

    Ogunrotimi’s recognition is a global acknowledgement of her impactful work and footprints in the gender ecosystem, including leading the advocacy effort that resulted in the passage of the Anti-Sexual Harassment Bill by the Federal House of Representatives and the localisation of sexual harassment prevention frameworks by 26 sub-national governments.

    The high-profile event attracted global attention and was attended by world leaders, policy influencers, and human rights advocates.

    Notable dignitaries present included United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, Sarah, Duchess of York, celebrated science educator Bill Nye, and Professor José Manuel Barroso, Chair of the Gavi Board.

    Ekiti youths hail gender activist on U.S. award

    Ekiti youths, under the aegis of Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC), have congratulated a gender activist and human rights advocate, Omowumi Ogunrotimi, for winning the prestigious 2025 Global Citizen Prize.

    NYC described Ogunrotimi as a beacon of hope and a role model to youths, urging the government to recognise her contributions to humanity by branding her as Nigerian youth ambassador.

    Ogunrotimi, founder of the Gender Mobile Initiative, has been garlanded as one of 2025 Global Citizen Prize winners, alongside other global change makers like Valeriia Rachynska (Ukraine), Taily Terena (Brazil) and Lydia Amenyaglo (Ghana).

    The award conferred on her in New York City, United States of America, celebrates individuals deemed to be making significant efforts to combat extreme poverty, gender inequality and systemic injustice.

    In a statement released in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State capital, NYC Chairman, Ekiti State chapter, Prince Temitope Adedara, said Ogunrotimi’s groundbreaking work in gender advocacy and systems change, spanning over a decade, earned her the global laurel.

    Adedara called on Governor Biodun Oyebanji, to as a youth-centric leader, induct Ogunmoroti into Ekiti Hall of Fame and promote her as a role model to Ekiti youths, having earned global honour as a reputable feminist and gender activist.
