Play-Offs:  Onana doubtful as injuries  hit Cameroon

Cameroon have been hit by two major injury blows, and face a possible third before today’s  World Cup playoff against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Veteran striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and in-form midfielder Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa have been ruled out of the match in Rabat, where Cameroon are looking to keep alive their World Cup hopes.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana is also a doubt after suffering an ankle injury, football federation officials added.

Choupo-Moting has suffered a knee sprain while Zambo Anguissa pulled out of Tuesday’s training session with a hamstring injury. The midfielder, who turns 30 on Sunday, has scored four goals for Napoli in Serie A this season.

Cameroon are participating in a playoff tournament for the four best runners-up across the nine African World Cup qualifying groups, which concluded their fixtures last month.

This week’s mini-tournament offers the possibility of a 10th  representative for the continent at next year’s World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the U.S.

If Cameroon win today , they would progress to a final in Rabat on Sunday against either Gabon or Nigeria to determine the African side that advances to the intercontinental playoff in March, where the last places for the 48-team World Cup will be determined.

Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions have competed in eight previous World Cups – more than any other African nation.

  • Onana leaves Manchester United for Trabzonspor loan

Onana leaves Manchester United for Trabzonspor loan

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana completed a loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor on Thursday, the Premier League club said.

Onana’s move had been on the cards since the club acquired Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on last week’s transfer deadline day.

.Lammens’ 18.2 million pounds ($24.58 million) signing left United with four goalkeepers, and while the club said they were fine carrying that many, the struggling Onana’s future had already been in doubt.

Turkey international Altay Bayindir started all three of United’s Premier League games this season, while the 29-year-old Onana has only played once, in United’s shocking second-round League Cup loss to fourth-tier Grimsby Town in a penalty shootout. Onana was at fault for Grimsby’s two goals.

Onana was signed from Inter Milan for 47.2m pounds in 2023, and his inconsistency has made him a target for scathing criticism ever since.

He was United’s number one last season, but a hamstring injury kept him out of the club’s pre-season games.

Turkey’s transfer window does not close until Friday, and there is anticipation Onana, who is on international duty with Cameroon, could make his debut against Fenerbahce on Sunday.

Man Utd keeper Onana considers Trabzonspor loan

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is considering a loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.

Onana had been linked with another Turkish club, Galatasaray, but they opted to sign Ugurcan Cakir.

Cakir, who started Turkey’s World Cup qualifying win over Georgia on Thursday, joined from Trabzonspor on 2 September in a deal that could eventually be worth 36m euros (£31.2m).

Trabzonspor have been assessing alternatives since that deal was completed and club sources believe Onana could have a major impact.

Onana is on international duty with Cameroon and the Turkish transfer window is open until 12 September.

Letting Onana or Altay Bayindir leave United has been on the cards since the club signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day.

Although Old Trafford officials stressed the club were willing to have a senior squad including four goalkeepers, that was at odds with head coach Ruben Amorim’s stated desire to have a smaller squad in the absence of European football.

Tom Heaton is the fourth senior goalkeeper in the United ranks.

Adebayor slams Onana for reporting late for Cameroon

Emmanuel Adebayor said  Manchester United star Andre Onana has ‘alienated’ Cameroon fans and his international teammates at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Cameroon drew 1-1 with Guinea in their AFCON opener on Monday as Onana watched the game from the sidelines after linking up late with his national side.

Onana has faced criticism over the decision with former Cameroon star Sebastien Bassong accusing the United goalkeeper of ‘disrespecting’ his country.

While Adebayor does not feel Onana has been disrespectful, he has warned the 27-year-old that his decisions will have a negative impact on Cameroon’s players and supporters.

“He [Onana] did not respect Cameroon,” Adebayor told Sport News Africa. “I was a player like him, and even being the most important player in my selection, I never acted in this way [arriving on the day of the match].

“The fact that this situation is happening shows that there is a problem, perhaps even within the federation.

“He risks losing big, because he has alienated the Cameroonian supporters, as well as many African supporters and undoubtedly certain members of the team.”

It is reported that Onana only agreed to be a part of the Cameroonian squad following pressure from the country’s president and that he still has a very frosty relationship with the head of the Cameroon FA, Samuel Eto’o.

Onana had retired from international duty last year following a fall-out with manager Rigobert Song at the Qatar World Cup but returned in September.

Speaking after Cameroon’s 1-1 draw against Guinea, Onana said: “I have a lot to say but I won’t say it here because we are in competition.

“The most important thing is sacred union. We are here to win. I ask the supporters to support us in good times and bad.

“I’m one of the leaders so I take my responsibilities and that’s why I’m here. I don’t want people to criticise the youngest. Let people continue to criticise me, I’m used to it, I do what is good for my country.

“It’s like choosing between my father and my mother, but my country comes first, that’s why I’m here. We’re together. I am here to represent my country, my continent. It is a huge honour for me to be here with my country.”

  • Man United to keep Onana till Jan.14

Man United to keep Onana till Jan.14

Manchester United are reportedly  hoping to have Andre Onana in goal for the game against Tottenham at Old Trafford on January 14 – even though Cameroon kick off their Africa Cup of Nations campaign just 24 hours later.

Premier League clubs were obliged to release their players for AFCON duty on January 1, but Onana will be available for Monday’s FA Cup third-round tie at Wigan.

But Mail Sport  has revealed that United want to keep him even longer and are in talks with Cameroon over Onana playing in the game against Spurs a week on Sunday, which starts at 4.30pm.

The 27-year-old would then have to take a seven-hour flight to Ivory Coast where Cameroon meet Guinea in their Group C opener at 5pm on Monday 15.

Cameroon’s final group game against Gambia is on January 23. If Rigobert Song’s side are eliminated, Onana could feasibly be back for the fourth round of the FA Cup – assuming United beat Wigan – which means he wouldn’t have missed any games at all.

If Cameroon go all the way to the final on February 11, United’s £47.2m summer signing could be absent for up to four matches.

Although Onana has concerns over losing his place at United to No 2 Altay Bayindir, he had no option but to answer his country’s call-up under FIFA rules.

  • Onana is second best in Premier League

Onana is second best in Premier League

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says goalkeeper Andre Onana is the Premier League’s second-best goalkeeper “based on stats”.

Onana, 27, was at fault for two Galatasaray goals in Wednesday’s 3-3 Champions League draw which left qualification hopes in the balance.

However, the Cameroonian is tied for most clean sheets in the Premier League this season with five.

And Onana has also prevented 3.67 goals – the second most in the league.

Only Luton Town’s Thomas Kaminski is ahead of him on 6.3 goals prevented.

Those numbers come from Opta calculations, with actual goals conceded being subtracted from the expected goals on target (xGOT) conceded figures, which reflect quality of chances for the opponent and shot execution.

Defending his keeper, Ten Hag said: “If you analyse it well then you see he is the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on stats, so his expected defending goals is the second best in the Premier League.”

Onana was a £47.2m summer signing from Inter Milan in the summer, replacing David de Gea, who left at the end of his contract.

But in addition to the mistakes in Turkey, he also made errors in the 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich at the start of the group phase.

Ten Hag, whose team play Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday evening, said of Onana: “He’s doing well. Also he knows that in the Champions League he makes some mistakes, but all over you see the first five months he is doing particularly well.”

Onana retired from international football in December after the World Cup following a row with head coach Rigobert Song, but returned for the final AFCON qualifier against Burundi in September and played against Senegal last month.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana says he has “let the team down” and that they failed to get a result at Bayern Munich “because of me”.

In an eventful game in Germany, Onana’s error gifted Bayern a crucial lead that they quickly doubled after United had started in disciplined fashion.

A flurry of goals followed but United were always chasing and ultimately fell short, suffering a 4-3 loss.

“This is the life of a goalkeeper,” Onana told TNT Sports.

Manchester United’s new goalkeeper Andre Onana has been recalled to Cameroon’s squad some nine months after he walked out on the team during the World Cup in Qatar.

Onana was named yesterday by coach Rigobert Song in the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Burundi in Garoua on Sept. 12, where the Indomitable Lions need only a draw to guarantee a place at January’s finals in the Ivory Coast.

Onana, 27, left the Cameroon squad in Qatar last November after their opening group game against Switzerland following a dispute with Song over tactics and training.
