Onazi: Divine intervention earned us victory

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onaziere said the Super Eagles were victorious in Addis Ababa because of divine Intervention.

In a chat with Brila FM, the SS Lazio of Italy Player says the Grace of God was behind their 2-1 victory at the Addis Ababa national stadium on Sunday in the first leg playoff, for the 2014 FIFA World cup in Brazil.

“The Ethiopians really lived up to it; they have good players and had the support of the whole country behind them but it was the Grace of God that we won the match”.

The Match between Super Eagles and the Walia Ibex of Ethiopia saw a filled to capacity stadium in Addis as the Ethiopians came out in full to support their national team in a bid to win their first ever ticket to the World cup which will be in Brazil next year.

The dreams and hopes of the Ethiopians where dashed as they saw the African champions Super Eagles of Nigeria defeat them, coming from behind to take a 2-1 lead in the first leg of the two-legged tie.

Ethiopia will have a tough battle as they will try to overcome a deficit of 2 away goals scored by the super Eagles when they travel to UJ Esuene stadium in Calabar on November 16, 2013.

  • All hail Onazi

    All hail Onazi

Antelopes of Ethiopia in Calabar on November 16 a mere formality by beating the Ethiopians in Addis Ababa on October 13.

Beating the Ethiopians at home should be a piece of cake, given our players’ talents and exposure. The hosts are minnows in the game. They are renowned marathon runners, not footballers.

It is this edge that should count in the Eagles’ favour, only if they can jettison this silent clamour for a $10,000 instead of the $5,000 the Nigeria Football federation is offering.

A lot was said about what transpired in the team’s hotel, shortly after beating the Malawians last month in Calabar. Indeed, it was said that it took Emmanuel Emenike’s bluff of a purported revolt for others to accept the $5,000 offered by the federation.

After that encounter, it has been discussed in hush tones that another revolt was in the offing. In fact, NFF chiefs have seized every opportunity to reinstate the fact that they don’t have $10,000 to give any player. At least for now, some have added.

While this scenario played out, one waited to hear what the coaches’ views would be. I wasn’t, however, shocked listening to one of the coaches’ insistence that the players must be told what they would be paid now and not days to the game. The message sank. I knew where the problem emanated from.

How can coaches worth their onions be spearheading another revolt? Did it not occur to the coaches that those who led the protest also collected the $5,000 they vowed not to accept? How best can the players show that they understand what is happening after accepting $5000? Shouldn’t the coach concern himself with the team’s tactics and leave the welfare aspect for the administrators?

I had thought that the coaches would have been worried about their unpaid salaries, instead of stoking the fire for another bonus row. Or are we back to the era of the mafias, which many people predicted would be the lot of the Eagles when the current helmsmen of the Eagles were appointed?

The coaches must be told that Nigerians cannot be fooled anymore on this issue. It is about time the Eagles won matches for their fans. Any time the Eagles play badly, the nation mourns. When they win, the country is agog in massive celebrations. Many people have lost their lives in either setting.

No coach should hide under the cloak of asking for what the players would be paid as match bonuses to scuttle Nigerians’ quest for another World Cup appearance in Brazil in 2014. We have learnt our lessons after missing the Germany 2006 World Cup tournament.

It would have been more appropriate if the coaches’ representative had told the radio station in Lagos that he was being owed salaries. Asking the authorities to state what they would give even before the players arrive in the country gives an insight into what to expect. And I hope the NFF and the NSC know who to hold responsible should – God forbid – something goes wrong.

We are the laughing stock every time we wash our dirty linens in the public. We had a lot of these shameful acts under the current leadership in the Eagles. Coaches who are not pleased with what they earn can step aside.

The government rewarded the Eagles and the coaches for winning the Africa Cup of Nations with cash, plots of land and national honours. State governments queued up to reward them too. Of course, rich men and women dug deep into their pockets to splash cash and gifts on the players and coaches. So, how on earth will a coach return to this country and put so high a premium on seeking to know how much the players would be paid?

Is money all there is to life? Is cash the essence of the game? I dare say no. No.

    Thumbs up NSC

Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi never ceases to amaze me with some of his welfare packages for ex-internationals. He embarks on these novel initiatives without making noise about them. We just wake up to read what he has done.

Again, in Benin City on Thursday, Abdullahi sent one of the big men at the National Sports Commission (NSC) Dr. Bolaji Ojo-Oba to give former Super Eagles defender Sunday Eboigbe N1 million.

Eboigbe has been down with stroke. He was brought to Lagos by the Lagos State governor Babatunde Raji Fashola. Eboigbe was treated and he thanked the governor for helping him out.

This writer is excited by Abdullahi’s gesture although many would say that he spent government cash. True, how many Sports Ministers have done what Abdullahi has done? Take a bow Bolaji, we in the fourth estate of the realm are proud of you.

My prayer is for God to keep Eboigbe alive to heal him. Like the Binis would say, Oba Khato Okpere, Ise.

Onazi’s joy was however cut short, when Trabzonspor went ahead again through a 35th minute goal by Paulo Henrique as the teams went into the break with the Italians trailing 1-3.

Supersport.com reports that the second half was for the Italians, as they mounted series of attacks that culminated in a Sergio Flocarri‘s brace in the 84th and 85th minute, to ensure that Lazio got a share of the spoils on the road.

Serie A: Onazi stars as Lazio win big

Ogenyi Onazi was finally handed another starting role for Lazio in the Serie A, and the Super Eagles midfielder made a big impression as he starred in a massive 3-1 win over Catania on Wednesday.

The last time Onazi was handed a start in a Serie A game was against Chievo two weeks ago, and Lazio ran out 3-0 winners, he was ignored for the 2-0 loss to local rivals, Roma, on Sunday.

Emerson put the home side 1-0 ahead after just four minutes as they pressed early to banish the ghost of their last result.

But Argentine, Pablo Cesar Barrientos cancelled the advantage almost immediately with an equaliser just two minutes later.

However, Senad Lulic ensured that Lazio ended the half with the advantage, as he scored in the 39th minute, to give the home side a 2-1 lead.

Then, Onazi stepped up deep in injury time.

The Nigerian was on hand to create an opening for his Brazillian team mate, Hernanes, to

put the icing on a perfect evening with the 94th minute third goal.

Onazi was cautioned in the 65th minute, but he will be happy with his efforts so far.

  • Onazi earns N43m per season

He may be among the few least paid with SS Lazio, but Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi has been reported to earn the sum of N43, 118, 268 per season.

SportingLife gathered on the Monday edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, a daily sports paper in Italy, after it published a list of Serie A earners in a study it conducted.

The Nigerian, who graduated from the Biancocelesti Academy to the main team, pockets an annual pay of 200,000 Euros while his teammate and German international, Miroslav Klose is Rome’s based highest earner with 2.1 million Euros.

Onazi banks on unity for victory

Super Eagles emerging midfield maestro Ogenyi Onazi says he believes the united spirit of all the players in camp will play a vital role in today’s World Cup qualifiers against the Flames of Malawi at the U. J. Esuene stadium, Calabar.

The 20-year-old star in an exclusive interview with futaa.com noted that for any group of people to be successful with a set goal, unity is the key word.

“There is unity in camp and everybody knows there’s only one goal for the team at this point and that is to beat Malawi today. I believe if we carry on the camp spirit to the pitch against the Malawians, we will be sure of getting victory,” Onazi said.

The Eagles file out against the Flames of Malawi on today in Calabar and the Lazio midfielder is expected to make coach Stephen Keshi’s starting XI against the visitors.

A win for Nigeria will ensure the Eagles qualify for the next stage of the qualifiers which is the play-off rounds.

Enyeama, Onazi promise victory against Malawi

Super Eagles stand in skipper, Vincent Enyeama, was in a jolly mood as the team held its media parley with the national team yesterday morning, declaring that he was not in competition with any of the goalies for the number one shirt of the national team.

Enyeama also gave a hint that sooner than later he will quit the Super Eagles, even as Lazio of Italy midfield youngster, Ogenyi Onazi assured that the team will come out clean against Malawi on Saturday.

Enyeama, who spoke first, told the media that the three goalkeepers in the national team, himself, Austin Ejide and Chigozie Agbim are in the form of their lives and any of them will man the post well if chosen by the national team handlers. “All of us are good and I must say I am not in competition with any of them neither are they with me. Nigeria is blessed with great talents and it’s always good when you are called up to play”.

Onazi on his part said he and his teammates are fired up for Saturday’s game and assured that the team will not disappoint despite the furore that has been generated ahead of the encounter.

The team trained under rainfall yesterday at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar, Nigeria’s preferred tourism destination with Sports Commissioner, Patrick Ugbe monitoring proceedings.

Keshi said during training that whether it rains or not, the team was ready for the battle against Malawi, declaring the focus is not only to win against Malwai but to get to the World Cup Championship in Brazil next year.

The heavy rains prevented some of the players from coming for the evening training.

Onazi fired up after Confed Cup miss

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi is keen to put behind the disappointment of missing out on the 2013 Fifa Confederations Cup in Brazil.

The SS Lazio player was ruled out of the tournament after picking up an injury in Nigeria 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier against Namibia on June 12.

Head coach of the Nigeria coach, Stephen Keshi highlighted the importance of the 20-year-old to the team when he declared after the tournament that Onazi’s absence was partly responsible for the side’s under-par display at the tournament in Brazil.

“I can’t imagine that my top striker Emmanuel Emenike will miss some of the goals that we missed (at the tournament) and even Ogenyi Onazi was sorely missed,” Keshi said.

Onazi has now taken the time to discuss his present situation, explaining that he is “feeling much better.”

“Thank you all for your prayers and support, am feeling much more better. I have personally gone through all your messages, am fired up to give more and do more by the special grace of God. #forzalazio #supereaglesalltheway,” Onazi said via his Facebook page.

Onazi has made 12 appearances and scored one goal for the Super Eagles since making his debut in 2012.
