Ondo 2024: Youth minister leads solidarity walk for governor

Nigeria’s Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has led Ondo State youths on a solidarity walk to mobilise voters for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The youths walked from the Ilesha Garage through Oyemekun-Oba Adesida road to Alagbaka area.

They campaigned to residents riding motorcycles popularly known as okada including traders at the Oja Oba (Oba Market) and pedestrians.

Speaking to journalists after the walk, the Minister said the walk was to show that the APC is intact in Akure, the capital city, and that the youths were ready to vote for Aiyedatiwa.

Olawande said Akure would give Aiyedatiwa huge votes.

He said the current hardship was occasioned by a necessary decision taken by the President to bring the country out of the woods.

According to him, “We have made up our minds to vote for the Governor. Though many will say there is hardship; yes, there is hardship, things are hard, things are bad. But the decision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was necessary to make life better for all citizens and dwellers of Ondo State.

“Aiyedatiwa is coming and nothing will shake it. We are intact. Come 16th of this month, you will see us elected the Governor of Ondo State again to serve for the next four years.

“We are going to give our support and we are going to give him a huge vote, and you can see that we are everywhere, and everybody is happy that we have a governor that is ready to listen and also has the interest of the youths.

“He is also a youthful governor, so be rest assured that we are giving him our full support as the Governor of Ondo State and he will return.

Ondo 2024: Political parties pass vote of confidence in REC

Some political parties in Ondo State under the auspices of Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) have passed a vote of confidence in the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mrs. Babalola Oluwatoyin.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had vowed to continue to protest until Babalola was removed and another REC brought in to conduct next month’s governorship election.

It accused Babalola of holding nocturnal meetings with the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Among other accusations were that she hails from Ondo State.

But Ondo IPAC said they believed Mrs. Babalola would conduct free, fair and credible elections.

Chairman of IPAC in Ondo State, Mr. Olaoluwa Adesanya, who spoke at a press briefing in Akure, said the body investigated the allegations against Babalola and found out that they were false and unsubstantiated.

According to him, “The alleged connivance of the state REC with any political party to subvert the coming November 16th 2024 governorship election is false and cannot be substantiated whatsoever.

“IPAC Ondo State has absolute confidence in the ability of Babalola to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

“We call on security agents to monitor and call for the arrest of hired political thugs that may disrupt peace, before, during and after the governorship election in Ondo State.

Akinrilola explained that the union’s decision to back Governor Aiyedatiwa stemmed from the Governor’s track record of improving their working conditions.

The Governor, who thanked the union for the endorsement and the award, approved payment of leave bonuses for mainstream civil servants.

Ondo 2024: APC has unbeatable structures to defeat other parties – Spokesman

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State says that it has unbeatable structures across the state to defeat other political parties in any election.

The party’s Publicity Secretary in the state, Mr Alex Kalejaiye, stated this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Akure.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the statement was in apparent response to a call by Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on the people of Ondo State not to sell their conscience.

Kalejaiye said that the recent defection of notable political giants from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had further fortified the chances of APC in the November 16 governorship election.

“We consider as insulting the unsolicited advice to our people not to sell their conscience.

“It is a popular fact that Ondo people are a politically-sophisticated entity who always acts out of conviction; they are not as cheap as being branded by Mr Makinde,” he said.

The APC spokesperson said that the party in the state was shocked by a call from the governor for immediate transfer of the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mrs Toyin Babalola, before the governorship election.

“The state chapter wishes to remind the governor that neither Ondo State nor the electoral body is an appendage of his empire, where he rules as an administrator.

“The party notes that the electoral officer has, since assumption of office, demonstrated integrity, competence and capacity to handle any election.

“We find it extremely ludicrous that Gov. Makinde will give a directive in such manner, when he didn’t influence the transfer of Mrs Omobolanle to Ondo State, neither is he a player on the political space of the state.

“Our counsel to the governor is to focus on the myriad of problems currently facing Oyo State,” he said.

Kalejaiye commended APC members for their unwavering belief in the party, urging them to exhibit maturity and decorum as the party continued to solicit for a renewal of the people’s mandate in the forthcoming governorship election.

Ondo 2024: INEC releases voter’s register to political parties

Political parties participating in the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State have received copies of the voter register. This was in line with the provisions of the provisions of section 10(4) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Supervising National Commissioner for Ondo, Ogun and Osun States, Prof. Kunle Ajayi, said the total number of registered voters upon completion of the Continous Voter Registration and clean-up exercise was 2,053,061.

Prof. Ajayi said the commission was prepared and determined to conduct a free, fair, credible, and inclusive election. He encouraged all political party representatives to mobilize their supporters to collect their PVCs.

Ajayi said: “Without the PVC, nobody would be allowed to vote. There will be no collection by proxy as it is against the law, and anybody found with more than one voter’s card belonging to the person shall be made to face the full extent of the law.

“The commission is keen on enhancing its inclusive election management capacity at all levels. As such, permit me to use this opportunity to call on all Persons With Disability (PWD), PWD-focused CSOs, and groups to encourage any PWD to come out and collect their PVCs as the commission has made adequate provision for assistive devices which would ensure a seamless voting experience for all PWDs in the forthcoming Ondo Governorship Election.”

Ondo REC, Mrs. Babalola Oluwatoyin, encouraged political parties to complement the Commission’s efforts in voter education and sensitization drive to ensure voters participate in the electoral process in large numbers, free from fear and undue influence.

She urged political parties and candidates contesting the governorship election to operate within the confines of the law and engage the electorate peacefully and respectfully.

“The publication and presentation of the Voter Register ensure transparency and establish a level playing field for all participants. I call on all stakeholders — civil society organizations, the media, and the electorate — to remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding the integrity of this process.

“The publication of the Voters Registers is only the beginning. We must work together to ensure that every stage of this election is conducted with the highest standards of fairness and transparency.”

Ondo 2024: Stay away from voting arena, people without PVC warned

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has warned persons without Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) to steer clear of polling centres during the Nov. 16 governorship election in Ondo State.

The INEC National Commissioner Supervising Ondo, Ogun and Osun States, Prof. Kunle Ajayi, gave the warning yesterday in Akure, the Ondo State capital, at the presentation of soft copies of the register of voters for the election to the political parties.

Ajayi, who pledged the commission’s preparedness and determination to conduct a free, fair, credible, and inclusive election, said that 2,053,006 eligible voters were registered. He said: “It is important to reiterate to you that the Commission shall commence distribution of the newly printed Permanent Voters Cards and the uncollected PVCs from the previous CVR exercise starting from Thursday.

“I strongly encourage all political party representatives to mobilise their supporters to come out and collect their PVCs. Also, the Civil Society Organisations and the media here present are to use their various strong outlets and platforms to encourage the general public, registrants, and eligible voters to come out en mass to collect their PVCs. This is because, without the PVC, nobody would be allowed to vote.”

Ajayi said that the collection of PVCs won’t be by proxy as it was against the law.

He said anyone found in possession of more than one voter’s card would be made to face the full wrath of the law.

He also called on Persons With Disability (PWD), PWD-focused organisations and groups to encourage any PWD to come out and collect their PVCs.

Ajayi said that the commission has made adequate provision for assistive devices which will ensure a seamless voting experience for all PWDs in the forthcoming election.

Also, Mrs Oluwatoyin Babalola, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Ondo State, said that the publication and presentation of the voter register was crucial and a statutory step in safeguarding the credibility and transparency of the electoral process.

Babalola said that the presentation was a powerful reminder that the future of Ondo State was in the hands of its people. She said: “I call on all stakeholders to remain vigilant and committed, safeguarding the integrity of the process

“I therefore use this medium to encourage voters in Ondo State to come out to cast their votes freely with the assurance that their choices are respected and their votes will count.”

Ondo All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, applauded the commission for its timely presentation of the voters register.

He said it would enable the political parties to go back to the field and mobilise and educate their supporters to come out en mass to vote on election day.

“It’s now our duty as political parties to go back to all 3936 polling units to mobilise and canvass for their (electorate) votes,” he said.

Ondo 2024: INEC vows to end voter apathy

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the level of voter apathy in the country was worrisome for a healthy democratic system.

It said the low turnout of voters was not encouraging despite all efforts and innovations it put in place to take elections to the doorsteps of voters.

The electoral body noted that the key to an enduring and sustainable democracy was the participation of a significant number of eligible voters.

The above views were expressed by the Chairman of the Board of Electoral Institute, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, at a roundtable in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on the forthcoming governorship election.

Prof. Zuru said INEC has taken giant strides to ensure eligible Nigerians are given the chance to decide those who manage their affairs.

Director General of the Institute, Dr. Sa’ad Umar Idris, said failure to conduct acceptable participatory and inclusive elections generated outcomes that stunt the growth and development of democracy.

Ondo Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Babalola Oluwatoyin, said voter’s apathy would be tackled through inclusive voter education, paying attention to marginalised groups and adequate security at polling units.

She said: “As we prepare ahead of the 2024 Ondo State governorship election, I would like to emphasize the importance of collective responsibility and involvement of all stakeholders to enhance voter participation, turnout and inclusivity in the election.”

  • Ondo 2024: ‘I’m next governor’

    Ondo 2024: ‘I’m next governor’

The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the coming governorship election in Ondo State, Otunba Benson Akingboye, has boasted that he would emerge as the next governor.

Femi Akeredolu, younger brother to the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, has affirmed support for the SDP candidate.

Speaking with reporters in Ibadan, Akingboye said he was determined to lead the state because besides coming from the most populated area in the state, 70 per cent of political structures of former Governor Akeredolu were backing his ambition, which gave him conviction of his victory at the polls.

He said his intention to contest for the governor was not by desperation or looking for a name, but to alleviate the suffering of the people.

Akingboye promised to correct the mistakes of past administrations if elected as governor. He lamented that the Ondo people were suffering, noting that the state would shine again when he becomes the governor.

He said: “I’ve been in the state for the past 24 years, I’m a grassroots person, and my brain is loaded with how the state will develop when I emerge as the governor.”

  • Ondo 2024: Our target is to win all 18 councils, says APC

Ondo 2024: Our target is to win all 18 councils, says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) will win the governorship poll in Ondo State because it has formidable structures across the 18 councils, the Publicity Secretary, Alex Kalejaye, said yesterday.

He said while the party won 15 of 18 local governments during the 2020 election, “our target this year is to win the entire 18 local governments.”

Kalejaye, who spoke on the chances of the ruling party, said Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa will beat his People’s Democratic Party (PDP) challenger, Agboola Ajayi, because he has performed creditably in office.

He said the ruling party cannot be intimidated by a depleted opposition platform that is being deserted daily by its long-standing members.

The publicity secretary said Aiyedatiwa has impressed the people of Ondo State by repositioning the critical sectors of education, health and civil services through his reforms and commitment to welfare.

He said the crowds at the rallies in Ondo Kingdom, Ikare and today’s campaign in Ore pointed to the wide acceptability being enjoyed by the ruling party.

Kalejaye said: “The chance of our party is bright. APC is the only party in Ondo State as of today. The few people who were making things difficult in the party have defected to APC. Eminent people like Joseph Akinlaja, formerly of the House of Representatives, have come to APC. Kolade Akinjo, a two-term member of the House of Representatives, has come to APC. Lad Ojomo, formerly of the House of Representatives, is in APC.

“The former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Jumoke Akindele, is now in APC. Former opposition spokesmen Eni Akinsola and Banji Olumide are in APC. The depletion has boosted our confidence. Our party is united. We are working. We will be victorious. “

Kalejaye praised Aiyedatiwa for doing what the people of Ondo State expected from a good leader, stressing that he has prioritised the welfare of workers.

He said while other states were dilly-dallying on the minimum wage, Aiyedatiwa was prepared to pay N73,000.

Kalejaye added: “Our party is strong and our governor is working. We have the structures at the unit, ward, local government and state levels. We have the people. We have the population behind us. We will win.”

The leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southwest and Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has said the party would continue to protest until the Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Babalola Oluwatoyin, is removed.

The governor spoke in Akure at the flag-off of the PDP campaign ahead of next month’s governorship election.

The rally was held along the busy Oba Adesida-Oyemekun road as the party was denied use of the Democracy Park.

Party supporters and a huge crowd blocked the busy highway. Traffic was diverted to other connecting streets.

Makinde said the party was not afraid of a fair contest, but needed a REC that is not from Ondo State.

He said: “I have a message for INEC national Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu. You must remove Ondo REC. She is from Ondo State. Her family lives here. We will continue to protest until she is removed.”

He urged PDP members to go out and woo voters for the party.

A former Governor of Ebonyi State, Sam Egwu, said last month’s governorship election in Edo State was a fraud.

Egwu, who represented the PDP Board of Trustee Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, said the party would not allow a repeat of what happened in Edo State.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to ensure a free and fair election in Ondo State.

The Chairman of PDP Governor’s Forum, Bala Mohammed, said the party would not allow the country to become a one-party state as well as condone injustice.

Muhammed urged party supporters not to allow anybody to deceive them to create problems in the party. He urged them not to sleep until Agboola emerged as governor.

He added: “The party is one. There is no faction, no division. Nobody should deceive you to create a problem. We want change in this country.”

National Chairman of the party, Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagun, said the Ondo governorship poll was a time to pay the APC back in its coin.

Ambassador Damagun told Ondo people that next month’s poll was an opportunity to change the narrative and change hunger.

The acting national chairman who expressed optimism about victory at the polls said the party’s candidate, Agboola Ajayi, would deliver dividends of democracy.

Ajayi, who declared that ‘I have a wife’, said the state does not need any crisis.

He insisted the Ondo REC must be removed. His words: “Ondo REC must leave Ondo. She cannot be fair. We do not want crisis.”
