Ondo 2024: APC reinstates suspended members

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo state has lifted suspension slammed on some of its members who sided with Chief Olusola Oke in the aftermath of the party primary.

The state chairman of the APC, Ade Adetimehin, stated this at the weekend while addressing some journalists.

Oke had last week collapsed his structure to support Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa ahead of the polls.

Adetimehin assured supporters of Oke of unbiased treatment.

He said the reconciliation between Governor Aiyedatiwa and Oke was a great achievement recorded under his leadership of the party.

Adetimehin, who praised Oke for the maturity and composure, said such action would solidify and unify the party.

“Oke being a party man has displayed genuine love for the party’s victory and the collapse of structure was all for the progress of the party.

“I urge other aggrieved party members and aspirants not to move to other party but remain in APC and emulate Oke.

“Our supporters have to shun anti party activities and join force in moving the party forward especially as we prepare for the governorship election slated for 16th November 2024.”

Ondo APC Primaries: Time for unity, grace in defeat not frivolous lawsuits

    By Marindoti Oludare

The aftermath of the APC primary elections, which saw Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa affirm his position as the party’s flag bearer, is a beautiful exercise in democracy. This is the first time in state history when all party members were allowed to choose their flag bearer in a free and fair manner. The recent lawsuit filed by Olusola Oke, challenging the election’s credibility, is not only regrettable but detracts from the democratic process that is fundamental to our political landscape.

While it is understandable that Mr. Oke might feel disappointed by his shift from a frontrunner to a distant third in the race, his repeated electoral disappointments can be attributed to two major factors: one, he is just not “lucky”; two, he is strategically deficient.  Attributing his political fate to anything else misrepresents the nature of any democratic competition. At 69, Oke might view this election as potentially his last bid for governance, but it is vital to maintain perspective: electoral defeat is not a reflection of one’s entire career or should not damage his ego or diminish his self esteem.

Oke’s argument that the APC does not have the right to operate while its national chairman is suspended is a stretch of legal reasoning that borders on the absurd. Such legal gymnastics could indeed “twist a sane mind into pretzels,” as he attempts to equate procedural issues with existential legitimacy.

Despite the fact that he serially lost all his elections, Oke should refrain from a path that leads to him being “lost.” He remains a significant figure in Ondo State’s political history, respected for his contributions and service. It is crucial at this juncture to remember the words of Winston Churchill: “Success is not final, failure is not fatal”. It is what Oke does henceforth that counts. This sentiment should resonate deeply with Oke, reminding him that his legacy will ultimately be defined by his actions in the face of adversity. Posterity is watching.

Now is the time for reconciliation and unity within the APC ranks. The focus should be on healing divisions and rallying together to support the incumbent Governor Aiyedatiwa in his continued efforts to lead Ondo State towards prosperity and stability. The Aiyedatiwa camp extends a hand of fellowship to Mr. Oke, ready to welcome him back into the fold, should he choose to act in good faith.

Oke has much to offer, and his experiences and insights remain valuable to the state. Instead of prolonging legal battles that serve little purpose but to fragment our party further, it would be wise for him to consider how he can contribute positively to the future of Ondo State. We implore Mr. Oke to take heart, seek the necessary psychological support and counseling, and return ready to work together for the greater good of our community.

As we move forward, let us all remember that in unity there is strength. It is time to put aside differences and focus on the collective task of building a thriving, unified Ondo State.

Ondo APC primary: Protesters hit Akure, call for cancellation

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Sunday evening, stormed the state secretariat of the party in Akure with placards to demand cancellation of the polls.

The protesters who are supporters of Chief Olusola Oke, Wale Akinterinwa and Hon Jimi Odimayo, described the primary as a monumental disaster.

They carried placards with inscriptions such as “No election in Ondo.,” APC primary electoral officers failed to show up in all wards in Ondo State,” “We demand fairness and justice in APC primary election in Ondo,” “No mandate for Aiyedatiwa, We’re calling for fresh primary election, ” “NWC of APC No Mandate for Aiyedatiwa,” “Saturday ‘s APC primary in Ondo was a sham,” “APC Must Not Collapse In Ondo State,” “Primary Election materials were not distributed in all wards across Eighteen LGAs in Ondo State.”

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, Director General for Olusola Oke Campaign Organisation, Ondo Central Senatorial District, Adeniran Oyebade, said the protest was against their mandate that was stolen.

“It was a broad-day light robbery, a monumental disaster. APC delegated some people to Ondo State to conduct the primary; apparently, that was never done. They remained in Akure and started writing results. They wrote the results of 203 wards all across Ondo State, taking the mandate of the people into their own hands.

“At the end of the day, we started seeing different results flying around stating one particular candidate won the election, but that never happened.

“APC as a party is about to set Ondo State on fire, and we will never take this as likely. We want the most popular candidate, a candidate that knows the people; we want the candidate whose name is a household brand in every part of Ondo State. We do not want an unpopular or controversial candidate; We want someone with a sound mind.

“Ododo should be suspended from the party. Election crime is a serious crime. You cannot come to the wards of our people and start terrorising them against their will.

“What we want is the cancellation of the election because any election did not take place. There is no need to say that the election was inconclusive.”

    • We don’t have predetermined motive, says Omo-Agege

Some of the governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State yesterday rejected the conduct of the primacy election and demanded its cancellation.

They also passed a vote of no confidence in the chairman of the primary election committee, Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo.

But Ododo said the primary proceeded as planned and lauded party members who participated for turning out massively for the exercise.

Addressing newsmen in Akure, even as the election got underway, the aspirants said that Governor Ododo did not follow the due process laid down by the national leadership of the party.

Mr Gbenga Edema, one of the aspirants, frowned at the delay in the release of electoral materials meant for the primary.

According to Edema, as at 10: 00 a.m., electoral materials had not been released, contrary to the resolution made during a stakeholders’ meeting on Friday.

“As I’m speaking to you at past 10:00 am, no electoral materials have been distributed.

“We have been here with others before 7;00 a.m. because the secretary of the committee, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege, told us during the stakeholders’ meeting that the materials would be distributed to the electoral officers at the BON Hotel, Akure.

“He told us that the accreditation would start between 10:00:am and 1:00 pm and that voting would commence by 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

“But what we are hearing now is that the election has been concluded and the result announced.

“We asked the chairman but he had no answer to our questions.

“We are not people that could be manipulated by godfathers. So, we are asking our national leadership that if they are not ready, they should postpone it until the right thing is done,” he said.

Similarly, Mr Sola Ajisafe, who represented Mr Wale Akinterinwa, one of the aspirants said that there was no election held in the state.

“My people have been calling me that no single material has been distributed in their wards.

“What is playing out here is connivance to short change the people of the state and reduce our capacity to choose our leader.

“We are saying that they should reschedule another election because this election did not even hold.

“This is another form of failure. Ododo has not performed his responsibility concerning this election. This is anti democratic process,” he said.

Mr Rotimi Ogunleye, who represented Mr Olusola Oke, an aspirant, asked the committee to follow due process, adding that a lot had been spent to build the party.

Ogunleye, who said he had a right to protest, asked President Bola Tinubu to intervene.

“I want to inform President Bola Tinubu, because he is our leader, that the men sent to conduct this election are not following the guidelines,” he said.

Ojo Oyewamide, spokesman for the Olusola Oke campaign organisation, said separately that the primary defied all descriptions of decency and democratic conduct.

Oke said primary election materials were not distributed to the 203 wards across the state as expected and assured by the Ododo-led election committee.

He said many of his supporters were beaten and harassed. His words: “Members of APC, who are eligible to vote for their preferred aspirants, did not have the opportunity to do so. Many of them queued in the sun till 3:00 pm, waiting for the conduct of the shadow poll.

“In another instance, regrettably enough, the election officers that were to conduct the exercise in the wards are known supporters of one of the aspirants.

“These people were kept in one hotel where they were to perpetrate all sorts of evil to compromise the process of choosing the candidate of our party.

“In a return to the dark days of thuggery in Ondo State, our supporters and supporters of other aspirants were beaten, intimidated and chased away from most of the designated voting centres by known political thugs and secret cult members hired by one of the aspirants.

“This level of violence has turned hospitals into the abodes of our supporters and other members of our party.

“Therefore, we like to state very categorically that no primary election was conducted by the APC in Ondo State today, Saturday, 20, 2024.

“Rather, what happened was shameful, and it constituted a serious dent on the image of our dear party.

“We expected that a decent nomination exercise, characterised by peace, freedom of our members to make their choices and fairness, would be conducted.

“We waited patiently for it, however, what we got was heart-rending.”

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa voted at Ugbo Ward 4, Obenla, Ilaje Local Government Area. He expressed confidence in the democratic process and reiterated his commitment to upholding the principles of transparency and fairness in the party’s election of candidate.

He urged all stakeholders to embrace unity and cohesion, emphasising the need for collective efforts towards advancing the development agenda of Ondo State.

The governor said: “This marks a special homecoming for me, as I express my heartfelt gratitude to my fellow constituents, esteemed party members, and the vibrant community of Ugbo Ward 4 in Ilaje Local Government.

“Today, in the very land of my birth, I stand to exercise my right to vote and to vie for the honour of representing our party as its gubernatorial flag bearer in the November gubernatorial election.

“The tremendous turnout we witnessed here today is no surprise to me, for this is where my journey began. It is here, amidst the familiar streets and faces, where I took my first steps and received my primary education.

“The joy of reconnecting with my roots is further heightened by the presence of two of my childhood classmates, a delightful reunion that fills me with immense happiness.

“Returning to this cherished community fills my heart with great excitement and gratitude. It is a privilege to stand once again among the people who have shaped my life’s journey.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to all who have gathered here to partake in this important democratic process. Together, let us forge ahead towards a brighter future for our beloved state.”

Mr Paul Oniyemofe, who represented Prof. Dayo Faduyile, another aspirant, described the election as a day light robbery, and asked for a rescheduled primary.

Some other party members said the election committee asked agents of the party to assemble at BON Hotel, Akure to witness the release of election materials to those assigned to conduct the primary. The agents were told to be there by 7am.

They got there as instructed and waited for the materials to be given to the election officers. Reporters were also there.

By 10am, Ododo addressed them, saying that materials for Ondo North and Ondo South were dispatched earlier in the day. The agents queried why that was done contrary to the directive that the materials would be released in their presence.

The agents asked for evidence of when and how the materials were released. Ododo did not provide any evidence, insisting that voting materials had been dispatched.

As the exchanges were going on between Ododo and the agents, voting was said to have commenced in many local government areas. This prompted some of the aspirants to berate Ododo and the national secretariat for poor handling of the process.

They accused the Ododo committee and the national secretariat of the party of working for Aiyedatiwa

Secretary of the election committee, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, told reporters that contrary to insinuations in some quarters, the committee had no predetermined motive but to ensure the credibility of the primary.

“We are not here with any predetermination; it is going to be a free and fair exercise. That is the only directive that was given to us,” he said.

Continuing, Omo-Agege said: “The only difference here is that this is a progressive state—an APC state. We are determined to ensure that at the end of the eight years of APC, we are about to start another eight years of another APC administration.

“We believe that whoever emerges as our flag bearer is going to win the general election, and at best, we have been able to assure all of the aspirants that there should be no bitterness.

“We don’t want to contest that at the end of the exercise we have difficulty bringing everybody together to win during elections. I think everyone is on board.”

Aiyedatiwa returned to Akure last night after voting in his home town.

He rode in motorcade with his supporters hailing him as he passed by.

The collation of the results from the 18 local government areas of the stare is expected to take place today and the winner announced.

Voters disperse at voting centre, Commissioner beaten by party supporters

Violence broke out at Ward 1 at Stella Maris College, Okitipupa, between supporters of two aspirants of the party contesting the ticket.

Accredited members of the party who had turned out early in their large numbers to elect the party’s candidate for the governorship polls took to their heels when fracas broke out between the rival supporters.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accreditation and election process had not begun when violence erupted and voters scampered for safety.

One of the accredited voters, who preferred anonymity, told NAN that one of the agents of an aspirant came to the ward, snatched the validation and accreditation papers and ran away.

“One of the agents came here, snatched the validation and accreditation papers and fled the venue in his car.

“They chased him but could not catch him. This caused the violence,” he said.

APC members beat Health Commissioner for ‘withholding result sheet’

The state Commissioner for Health, Banji Ajaka, was also beaten up by angry party members at Ugbo Ward 3, Ilaje Local Government Area for allegedly hiding result sheet.

Witnesses said the APC members who demanded the result sheet turned on Ajaka after electoral officers said he had the result sheets.

Ajaka, who confirmed the incident, said he was attacked because they alleged he was withholding result sheet. He said they descended on him while he was trying to explain what happened.

Ondo APC Gov aspirants protest in Akure

Some governorship aspirants in today’s primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have begun a protest in Akure, the state capital, over non-distribution of the election materials

Agents of the aspirants had stormed the Bon Hotel, venue of the distribution of the election materials and waited for over three hours.

As they waited for election, news filtered in that APC members had gathered at various Wards in Akoko area and parts of Ondo South senatorial district that voting has commenced in those areas.

Secretary of the Primary Election Committee, Senator Omo-Agege had told stakeholders that election materials and result sheets would be distributed by 7am.

The protesting aspirants said they arrived Bon Hotel as early as 6:30am and didn’t witness distribution of materials.

One of the aspirants, Dr. Olugbenga Edema, called for postponement of the primary if the processes were not credible.

According to him: “At the stakeholders meeting, Omo-Agege informed us that distribution of materials will commence at 10am. We have been here since 6:30am and waited alongside electoral officers on the list but nothing was distributed.

“No voting materials were issued. At 9:30am, Governor of Kogi State and Chairman of the Committee, Usman Ododo, came out to tell us that materials have been distributed since 7am. He told us materials have been distributed but we didn’t see where materials were distributed.

“There should be a credible election that will let the votes count. If they are not ready let then postpone the election.”

Agent of Wale Akinterinwa, Barr. Shola Ajishafe, said no materials were distributed especially to his ward.

“What we see playing out is an arrangement to shortchange the people. There is nothing to cancel. Ododo has failed us. They should postpone the primary. We do not have confidence in Ododo. If the leaders failed to do the needful, there is a way we will react and we will react accordingly. You can only announce a result of an election that was conducted.

Chief Olusola Oke, who was represented by Ogunleye Rotimi, said no material was sent to his area.

“Due process should be followed based on the guidelines. Everybody matters in this party. It will be too bad for few people to write results.”

Ododo told the protesters that materials have been distributed to Ondo North and South senatorial districts.

He said materials for Ondo Central was yet to be distributed as at 10:30am.

    • Jimoh Ibrahim optimistic about victory

Campaign and consultation by the 16 All Progressives Congress governorship aspirants in Ondo State continued late into the night yesterday ahead of today’s direct primary election.

A total of 171,922 revalidated members of the APC in the state are expected to vote in the primary in 203 political wards across the state.

Although all the aspirants have been boasting about their chances, observers pick the incumbent Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Wale Akinterinwa, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim and Isaacs Kekemeke as front runners.

Others in the race are Olusola Adewale Ehinlanwo, Olugbenga Omogbemi Edema, Engr. Olufunmilayo Waheed Adekojo, Akinfolarin Mayo Samuel, Chief Olusola Alexandria Oke (SAN), Ohunyeye Olumide Felix, Barrister Morayo Lebi, Garvey Oladiran Iyanjan, Prof. Francis Adebayo Faduyile, Engr. (Mrs.) Omogoroye Folakemi Judith, Engr. Ifeoluwa Oyedele and Omo’Oba Okunjimi Odimayo.

Party sources said last night that a few aspirants could opt out before the commencement of voting today.

Some members of the party under the auspices of the Asiwaju Mandate Group (AGM), a political pressure group backed by Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said the party needed cohesion after the primary.

Director General of the AGM, Muyiwa Asagunla said: “The political atmosphere of the state is becoming so tensed and he (Tunji-Ojo) needs to speak that he is not behind any aspirant. He made it clear that this group is not and will not be behind any aspirant.

“We have personalities here supporting different aspirants. They are from the camps of different governorship aspirants.

“People have seen that the Minister is unbiased about it. What he is after is that we have stability in the politics of Ondo State.

“When the party speaks, that is the candidate we are going to pitch our tent with.

“As of today, we are for all the aspirants and at the same time we are not for any of the aspirants.

“We believe that politics and elections in Ondo State substantially dictate the direction of things in the general elections in the country and hence the need to have a formidable and pro-people governor and government come November when the Ondo State Gubernatorial election will hold.”

One of the governorship aspirants, Funmi Waheed-Adekojo, who spoke to reporters in Akure, said she would step down from the race if the party’s leadership asked her to do so because of her loyalty.

“I will step down for my loyalty of the party. If the party asked me, I will do so. It is where the party goes I will go,” she said.

A major concern for members of the party ahead of the primary was the names on the revalidated membership list.

Seven of the aspirants had petitioned the national leadership of the party over the use of the revalidated list for the conduct of the primary. The aspirants claimed the membership revalidation was done without their knowledge.

The lawmaker representing Odigbo Constituency 1 in the Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon Ifabiyi Samuel Olatunji, who kicked against using the list, said he was shocked to see two revalidated members from his ward.

According to him, “it is fraud of the highest order. In my ward, only two people registered and two people were revalidated. It is a lie from the pit of hell. We have 11 wards and we have registered members of the party.

“We have over 1,000 registered APC members in my ward. To my surprise somebody brought only two registered members. We are building on zero level and fraud. Members’ register is key to this election, and in a situation where the register is faulty, the whole system is faulty.”

Akinterinwa expressed optimism that some aspirants would step down for him. He said he was expecting victory at the polls.

Aiyedatiwa said the immense support he received across the state showed the people want continuity in office.

Aiyedatiwa urged his loyalists to remain steadfast.

“Throughout this campaign journey, the immense support I’ve garnered stresses the resounding desire of the people of Ondo State for continuity,” he said.

“This affirmation is rooted in the remarkable progress achieved during the short period we have spent in office.

“The people of Ondo State yearn for the continuation of this positive trajectory, and it’s evident that they believe I am the right candidate to lead this charge.

“Therefore, I urge everyone to identify with me in their various wards on Saturday, so that the developmental phase we have embarked on can continue.

“Let us ensure that our collective voices are heard loud and clear.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa promised to increase developmental projects to strengthen the status of Ikare as one of the major economic hubs of the state.

Akinterinwa told journalists after his campaign tour that he expected to be victorious.

He said he saw sincerity on the part of the people.

“They want somebody knowledgeable, somebody who has the capacity, somebody who has been around long enough, somebody who they know and who they know has been in government, somebody they can fraternise with.

“When we go out, we don’t take crowds from one local government to the other. So, our crowd is organic; it is within that environment. I believe the state is ready for us, and they want us.

“I expect that on Saturday, we will come out as the winners of the primaries by the grace of God. I won’t be surprised if aspirants start stepping down for me. Some of them (aspirants) are reaching out to me.”

On expectations from the committee that will conduct the primary, Akinterinwa said: “I expect that the Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Alhaji Usman Ahmed Ododo, I don’t know him, but I believe he is a man of integrity, a man who has capacity.

“Obviously, for choosing him to come and conduct the election here (Ondo State), the party hierarchy must know that he is capable of doing a good job.

“I expect that we will have a level playing field and that we will have free and fair primaries, hitch-free, even though people are still a bit skeptical due to certain things.

“But all I know is that despite some of these obstacles, I’ll surmount them and come out victorious.

“The party has a structure. I believed that the people coming to conduct the primaries were also members of the party and had an understanding of their role.”

    Jimoh optimistic about victory

In an interview with The Nation, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who is representing Ondo South Senatorial District in the Senate, said he would win the primary.

He said he worked more than all the aspirants and that he is well rooted in all the 18 local government areas and 303 wards of the state.

He said he was enthusiastically received by APC members during his campaign tour during which he explained his Renewed Hope Agenda to them.

Senator Ibrahim sued for a free and fair contest and enjoined his fellow contestants to ensure that the will of party members prevailed.

“l am the candidate to beat. The other contestants know that. Everywhere you go, it is Jimoh Ibrahim.  My campaign group worked very hard. We are highly optimistic,” he said.

Akintelure’s family denies endorsing any aspirant

The family of the late Dr Paul Akintelure, the APC governorship aspirant who died last month, has denied endorsing any governorship aspirant in the state.

A brother of the deceased, Oladapo Akintelure, said media reports claiming that the family had thrown its weight behind another aspirant were false.

“We wish to unequivocally state that the DPA family is neither directly nor indirectly involved in these acts of political endorsements,” he said.

“We have not directed anybody or any group to engage in such endorsements in the name of the family or in the name of our late icon Dr. Paul Akintelure (DPA).

“We vehemently disapprove of any individual or group endorsing aspirants in the name of DPA structure, and we urge them to desist from such actions.”

Lawmaker urges Ondo APC to examine discrepancies in membership register

The lawmaker representing Ese-Odo/Ilaje local federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon Donald Ojogo, has urged the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to examine cases of discrepancies in the  membership register of the party in Ondo State.

Some members of the Ondo APC, including governorship aspirants, have kicked against the revalidated membership register.

Ojogo, who spoke in a telephone interview, said the November governorship polls is a must win for the ruling APC.

He called for the conduct of a credible and fair primary to avoid unnecessary litigations from the opposition parties.
