Aiyedatiwa promises more incentives as NLC protest hits Akure

Ondo state governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has promised to provide more incentives for workers in the state as part of measures to ameliorate economic hardship.

Governor Aiyedatiwa said the issue of labour was very critical to his administration.

Aiyedatiwa spoke when he addressed protesting workers in the state led by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

The NLC in the state had mobilised its members to join the nationwide protest to demand an end to hardship faced by Nigerians since the removal of fuel subsidy

They marched through the streets of Akure to Alagbaka, the seat of power in the state.

Part of their demands was for President Bola Tinubu to begin to “tax the rich and subsidised the poor” to end the rising cost of living and hardship in the country.

Combined security agencies escorted the protesters to avoid hijack of the protest by hoodlums.

Ondo NLC chairman, Victor Amoko, said Nigerians were faced with hardship due to what he termed bad economic policies of the federal government.

He said the situation was getting worse with the rising cost of essential commodities and goods in the country.

He stated: “We have tried every possible means to get the government to listen to us but it seems this is the only language that they want to understand.

“So, we are here to press further and tell the federal government that the entire citizens of the country are suffering. There is hunger and poverty in the land. We have made our demand known and part of it is, that we are saying No to hunger.

“Let the government reject IMF and World Bank Policy, so that the entire citizens will also have a breathing space. Stop prolificacyy of government. They should tax the rich and subsidise the poor. Fix local refinery too and end the subsidy. Stop school fees increase.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa, who was represented by the state Head of Service, Kayode Ogundele, said his administration undertook payment of outstanding salaries and arrears because of the regards for workers welfare.

According to him, “The issue of labour and workers are very critical to the governor. That is why we take your issues seriously. For some time now, we have been enjoying peace and harmony.

“This government has taken proactive steps to ensure the level of hardship is reduced by clearing the arrears of workers and It is one of the steps to keep the workforce going in the face of economic reality in the country.

“Also, the free shuttle (buses) for transports which ought to have stopped since last year December but the government decided that it should continue in the interest of the workers.

“These are part of the steps the state government is taking in ensuring that our workers have a soft landing and cushioning the effect of the economic hardship in the country.”

However, the protest did not hold in other parts of the state.
