Ondo PDP, House of Assembly clash over defection of opposition lawmakers

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State and House of Assembly have traded words over the recent defection of two opposition lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmakers – Oladiji Oguntudo, representing Akure South Constituency I, and Raymond Oluwatoyin Daodu, Deputy Minority Leader representing Akoko South West Constituency I – formally announced their defection during last Thursday’s plenary session.

Until their defection, Oguntudo and Daodu were the only remaining PDP members in the 10th House of Assembly.

Their exit came barely a month after they resigned from the PDP, citing leadership crises and internal wrangling in the party.

In their resignation letters, both lawmakers said their decision followed “wide consultations with family members, constituents and political leaders,” who advised them to align with the ruling party.

    However, speaking on Fresh

FM 102.9 Akure, monitored by The Nation, the state PDP Chairman, Dupe Aisida, condemned the lawmakers’ action, describing it as a “betrayal” of the mandate given to them by the PDP.

Aisida said he was not surprised by their decision, but maintained it was driven by “personal interest and political survival”, rather than public service.

“They didn’t defect because APC is performing well. Everyone knows the government is underperforming. It’s purely about survival,” he said.

The PDP chairman also berated the House of Assembly, describing it as “toothless” and ineffective in discharging its constitutional oversight duties.

He accused the assembly of failing to hold the executive accountable, leading to what he termed growing opacity in the management of public finances.

“Most people in the state don’t even know we still have a House of Assembly. If they were truly performing their oversight functions, things wouldn’t have been this bad,” Aisida said.

He alleged that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration lacked transparency in handling contracts and public funds, noting that basic fiscal information such as project costs and budget performance had become inaccessible to citizens.

“It’s not as if there’s no money now. After the removal of fuel subsidy, the state and local governments have been getting more funds, yet there’s little to show for it. What is the percentage of budget implementation? What have they done with local government allocations? These are the questions the assembly should be asking,” he said.

Aisida said the opposition party was reorganising to provide credible leadership and hold the government accountable.

“We are not sleeping. We have started well, and our people will soon begin to see the difference. Governance affects everyone, not just politicians. We all share the same destiny,” he said.

Contacted, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Olatunji Oshati, dismissed Aisida’s claims as “baseless and unfounded.”

He said PDP should attend to its internal crises instead of making “vague and reckless” allegations against the legislature.

“We don’t need to dignify PDP’s accusations with excuses. The records are there for everyone to see. Their problem is that they can’t manage their own house – that’s why it’s leaking.

“The PDP chairman is only angry because their house is now empty. If their house was good, nobody would leave,” he said.

Oshati maintained that the state and federal governments were performing creditably, urging the opposition to “look inward and fix themselves.”

Crisis rocks Ondo PDP as aggrieved members reject state congress

    • …describes outcome as ‘charade’

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State is facing a deepening internal crisis as some aggrieved members have rejected the recently concluded state congress that produced Barrister Victor Modupe Aisida as the new state chairman.

Aisida emerged at the congress held last month, succeeding Rt. (Hon.) Bakitta Bello, who completed the tenure of the late Hon. Fatai Adams.

Other newly elected executives include Akin Oyewole (Deputy Chairman), Oluseye Olujimi (Secretary), Jolade Aladetan (Publicity Secretary), and Woke Akindiose (Legal Adviser).

Although the congress was described as peaceful, the party’s 2024 governorship candidate, Agboola Ajayi, was conspicuously absent from the exercise.

However, in a statement issued on Wednesday, a group within the party known as Kick Against Deceit alleged that the congress was deliberately manipulated to favour certain leaders within the PDP.

In the statement signed by Hon. Bamidele Ojo, the group’s Protem Director of Public Communications, the members described the entire process as a “charade.”

“We, as members of a group within the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State, Kick Against Deceit, hereby condemn and totally reject the just concluded state congress of the PDP in Ondo State. We insist that the process was wilfully manipulated to serve the interests of a few leaders,” the statement read.

Rising from a meeting held in Akure and chaired by Hon. Olaniyi Ogungbuji, the group expressed disappointment in the party’s leadership, accusing it of hypocrisy and lack of transparency despite its public posturing as a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The aggrieved members alleged that, contrary to earlier assurances that existing senatorial district arrangements and officeholders who had not completed eight years would be retained, the congress outcome defied that understanding.

“We realised that what was preached was not followed in any way. The positions were not only swapped from one senatorial district to another, but those who had not spent up to eight years were removed without any justifiable reasons,” the statement continued.

“At the end of the scam, some local governments enjoyed both national and state positions, while others were left out entirely, depending on the presence of any member of the leadership cartel in such local governments. The positions were not given based on competence, equity, or fairness but on a ‘chop-make-I-chop’ basis.”

The group vowed to challenge the outcome of the congress before higher authorities within the party, insisting that allowing the “charade” to stand would set a dangerous precedent ahead of the 2027 polls.

The statement added, “Having thoroughly deliberated on the process and the conduct of the exercise, we concluded that the outcome must not be allowed to stand. We have therefore resolved to challenge the result in the interest of our great party.”

Those present at the meeting included Olaniyi Ogungbuji, Charles Adeduro, B.J. Lawal, Pat Ojo, Adebayo Adeyemi Adedipe, Bamidele Ojo, and Caroline Olubitan.

Others were Olowokanga Ayininuola, Dagbatan Anjorin Peter, Comrade Olawale Ijanusi, Oyinlusi Yemisi, and Eyiyemi Oluwatuyi.

Ondo PDP crisis deepens as media director Igbabo resigns

The crisis in the Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated with the resignation of the party’s Director of Media and Publicity, Leye Igbabo.

Igbabo’s exit came just 72 hours after the state congress that produced Hon. Dupe Aisida as the new chairman alongside other executive members in Akure.

In his resignation letter dated September 30, 2025, and addressed to the state chairman, Igbabo cited a hostile atmosphere at the PDP secretariat, which he said hindered him from discharging his duties effectively.

He also alleged deceit, compromise, and indiscipline within the party leadership, describing the environment as unconducive to productive work.

“It is disheartening to know that the Secretariat has become hostile to the effective and efficient performance of my duties as the Director of Media and Publicity.

“I note with pain, utter deceit, huge compromise, and gross indiscipline. There is no more sincerity of purpose, and under such circumstances, I do not want to be labelled as an incompetent official. Staying in such an unproductive environment amounts to a precious waste of time and energy.

“I therefore resign my appointment as the Director of Media and Publicity, PDP Ondo State, with immediate effect,” the letter read in part.

Igbabo took over the position in April 2025 following the resignation of Mr. Kennedy Peretie.

Peretie, in his own resignation letter, had declared that the PDP in Ondo State had moved from “the intensive care unit to the morgue,” alleging that the party leaders had no genuine intention to win elections but were only concerned with trading the party’s platform every election year.

The back-to-back resignations of the party’s spokespersons have highlighted the deepening cracks within the opposition PDP in the state, raising concerns over its preparedness for future elections.

Ondo PDP guber candidate Ajayi set to join APC, support Tinubu’s re-election

…I’m waiting for him to join me in moving Ondo forward – Gov. Aiyedatiwa

Barring any last-minute change, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the November 16, 2024 Ondo governorship election, Hon. Agboola Ajayi, is poised to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ajayi, a former deputy governor, formally withdrew his appeal at the Supreme Court challenging the outcome of the election, citing wide consultations with his family, associates, party members, and legal advisers.

In a letter to the Chief Registrar of the apex court, he explained that the decision was guided by his commitment to peace and good governance.

“After careful deliberation, we have reached a consensus that the appeal should be withdrawn, and I hereby so do. Having served as deputy governor and legislator, my foremost commitment is to good governance and peaceful coexistence in Ondo State and Nigeria,” Ajayi stated.

Reacting, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa confirmed that Ajayi had already signaled his readiness to join the APC in support of President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“In fact, Hon. Agboola Ajayi has told me personally that he is coming to join the APC. I am waiting for him so that we can work together to build a greater Ondo State,” Aiyedatiwa said on Channels TV.

The governor further described the Supreme Court’s dismissal of all opposition petitions against his election as “a final seal on the mandate freely given to me by the people of Ondo State.”

Ajayi, who contested the 2024 governorship election alongside 14 other candidates, emerged as Aiyedatiwa’s closest rival, polling 117,845 votes against the APC candidate’s 366,781.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court, in a unanimous decision, dismissed petitions filed by the PDP, Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Allied People’s Movement (APM), bringing an end to months of post-election litigation.

Political observers noted that Ajayi’s anticipated defection, if finalized, could significantly reshape Ondo State’s political landscape ahead of future contests.
