  • Ondo police arrest suspected arsonist

    THE Ondo State Police command have arrested a suspected arsonist, Deji Adenuga, who allegedly set ablaze eight members of his estranged girlfriend’s family.

    Police spokesperson Femi Joseph confirmed Adenuga’s arrest to reporters in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

    He said the suspect would be paraded today.

    Adenuga was arrested in Ijebu Ode under the Brid, Ogun State, according to the police spokesman.

    It was learnt that Adenuga was one of the inmates that escaped at Olokuta Prison during the 2013 jail break.

    He was sentenced to death in 2012 after killing his wife.

  • Three die in Ondo auto crash

    Three persons have reportedly lost their lives in a fatal road accident along Ode Aye – Okitipupa road in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.

    Sources said the carnage occurred when a motorcycle with two passengers, which was alleged to be on a top speed, rammed into oncoming vehicles.

    The crash also led to serious injury sustained by one of the passengers in the vehicle.

    It involved a Golf Volkswagen car marked CH 978 GGE, driven by one Wasiu Ojeyemi and a diesel truck with number plate AKD 28 LG driven by Taiwo Olowojulo.

    The victims were said to have been thrown off the bike in different directions with one of them crushed by an oncoming vehicle.

    Police report said the injured passenger was immediately taken to a private hospital in Ode-Aye for urgent treatment while the corpses of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue.

  • Police arrest 15 suspected cultists in Ondo

    At least 15 suspected secret cult members have been arrested by police in Akure‎, Ondo State.

    The suspects were arrested during Christmas and New Year celebrations in the state capital.

    A police officer was also killed by the cultists in December.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, told our correspondent that the suspected cultists were arrested at different locations within the Akure metropolis.

    He listed names of suspects as Olamiju Abiodun (25), Adejuyigbe Josua (22), Tayo Agboola (22), Orebe Boluwaji (33), Oluwadar Akinbobola (17), Oluwaseun Olajide (21), Adesina Olasunkanmi (18) and Alaba Raji (19).

    Others are – Ajibola Olanrewaju (25), John Isaac (18), Haruna Friday (18), Omotoso Shina (26), Ekene Ereozo (25), Mathew Ogu (36) and Uche Odoh (30).

    Joseph said, “The suspects were arrested at different locations in Akure. During the routine patrol of our men to ensure that we had peaceful Christians and New Year celebration, the suspects were arrested in their different hideouts in the town.

    “Some of them were arrested during the initiations of new members into their cult groups while some were arrested while holding meetings.”

    Ondo police arrest timber seller over alleged assault on pregnant woman

    The Ondo State Police Command yesterday arrested a popular Akure timber Seller, Adeleye Fayehun (aka Ade-basket) for allegedly assaulting a pregnant woman.

    The victim, Mrs. Adenike Adeolu,44 years was alleged to have been brutalised following disagreement over timber business.

    The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO),Femi Joseph who confirmed the arrest said the suspect, Fayehun, has been detained and placed under custody for interrogation.

    Joseph added that the confessional statement of the suspect had been taken by the police.

    He said “The case has been reported and we have already begun investigation into the matter”

    It was learnt that the husband of the victim, Olusanya Adeolu, accompanied by sympathizers reported the case to the police at the Akure Area Command shortly after the incident.

    Adeolu said the suspect’ Ade-basket’ joined by some hoodlums believed to be his boys battered her wife to a state of comma.

    He also condemned the maltreatment and assault done on his wife by some of the whiskers who are currently cooling their heels in police net.

    Adeolu alleged that the culprit had been terrorising residents of Akure and had been threatening to deal with his wife over timber business which according to him he wanted to monopolised.

    He said”the issue got to this level when the suspect (Fayehun) collected a sum of N800,000 from some forest agents which was illegal.

    “It was this collection that warranted the timber’s union meeting summoned at an hotel along Ondo road and my wife decided to join them during the session being a member of the union.

    Speaking on her sick bed, the Mrs. Adeolu narrated how Fayehun stood up during the meeting after raising issues concerning the collection and slapped her.

    According to her, two other men who are his accomplices also joined him to maltreat her to a point that she became unconscious.

    Symphatisers condemned the act,stressing that the development could ignite public uproar.

    They accused Fayehun and his cohorts of usually causing public disturbances in Akure with impunity, stressing that it is time for him to be tamed by security agencies since nobody is above the law of the land.

    Ondo police kill six Owo bank robbers, N9m recovered

    The Police in Ondo State have promised tough times for armed robbers and other criminals in the state following revelations that six of the seven robbers that raided some commercial banks in Owo recently were killed and about N9million recovered from them. DAMISI OJO reports.

    Though the dust is settling gradually on the recent bank robbery that shook Owo town in Ondo State, facts have emerged that no fewer than six of the seven armed robbers involved in the operation were gunned down by the police.

    The seventh member of the gang was also arrested by the police who also recovered about N9million from the robbers.

    No fewer than 20 persons including the manager of one of the four banks raided by the robbers were killed during the robbery attack which took place penultimate Thursday and shook the ancient town to its foundation.

    Sources told The Nation that the men of the underworld struck around 4 pm on the fateful day and robbed four different commercial banks in the town in almost total impunity, killing their victims at random. But they met their match in the police who appeared on the scene not too long after.

    As they made to escape, the special anti robbery squad from the state police command arrived the town and engaged the robbers killing six of them. The seventh member was arrested.

    But while their operation lasted, the robbers turned the town into a ghost of itself as residents were forced to stay indoors to avoid being caught in any crossfire..

    Those living near the banks where the robbers operated moved to other parts of the town apparently for fear of attack by the evil men.

    The victims of the robbery incident were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, (FMC) Owo where many of them later gave up the ghost, while some are still responding to medical treatment.

    The state Police Commissioner, Mr Isaac Eke who spoke through the Police Public

    Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state Police Command, Mr Wole Ogodo said the Police swooped into action immediately they were alerted about the robbery incident.

    He noted that the efforts of the Police led to the recovery of some amount of money with various arms and ammunition used by the robbers during their operation, adding that the working synergy in the Police assisted them to track down one of the suspect.

    He confirmed that six of the robbers were killed by the policemen deployed to the town by the police command and their corpses already in the custody of the Police.

    Also, Mr Eke who paraded the deceased armed robbers at the state Police headquarters in Akure hinted that the Police are already interrogating the only surviving suspect arrested in connection with the incident, adding that he was helping the Police in their investigations.

    The Police boss disclosed further that three cars used by the armed robbers during the robbery operation were also seized by the Police, while a huge sum of money totaling almost N9million was recovered from the suspected robbers when the Police attacked them.

    He said the Police in the state would continue to protect the lives and properties of the people adding that “there cannot be any hidden place for armed robbers in Ondo state with the efforts put in place by the Police in the state”.

    Ondo Police kills cultist, arrest two others

    The Ondo State Police Command Wednesday said it had killed one notorious cult member while two others were arrested during an early morning operations of its men in Igbokoda in Ilaje Local Government Area of the state.

    According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) ASP Wole Ogodo, they met their waterloo when the deceased identified as Seun and others dared the officers of the Special Anti- Cultism Squad (SAS) and shot sporadically at them.

    Ogodo said: “what transpired today (Wednesday) was that one of them was arrested and taken to Akure for investigation and he led them back to Igbokoda in Seun’s house. When the operation led by ASP Raimi Seidu knocked his door, his wife came out and policemen said they came for investigation.

    “He (Seun) ran through the back door and took his AK 49 rifle with double magazine and started shooting at the police and in self defence, they shot him dead.

    “We have been saying this that Ondo state is not where criminals can operate, it is better for them to have a rethink or continue to meet their waterloo.”

    He therefore warned parents to take care of their wards so as not be used as  political thugs to cause crisis in the state as we approach the forthcoming general election, saying anybody caught, will face the wrought of law.

    The police spokesman urged the general public to feel free to give out useful information to the police, promising that such information will be treated highly confidential.

    Among items recovered from them were, one unregistered Primera car, 46 inches plasma television, one motorcycle, standing fan, 6 mobile phone and one AK49 rifle.
