    Five die, two injured in Ondo road crash

    At least five persons have lost their lives, while two others sustained varying degrees of injuries in a fatal road crash that occurred yesterday in Ondo State.

    The accident, which occurred around 9:10am at Oyin Junction, after Ilu-Abo in Akure North Local Government Area, involved a Nissan Sunny car and a DAF tipper truck.

    According to eyewitnesses, the victims were on their way to the popular Ogbese Market, on the outskirts of Akure, to trade their goods.

    Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, attributed the cause of the crash to over speeding.

    “Seven people were involved, five people – one male adult, three female adults, and one female child – died, while two others were injured,” Ibitoye said.

    He added that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, by personnel from the FRSC Owo Unit Command.

    Ibitoye lamented the rising cases of avoidable accidents on major routes across the state, saying the command had intensified engagements with tipper drivers and other motorists along the Akure-Ogbese axis to promote safer driving practices.

    “It is becoming too frequent. We have been engaging tipper drivers and will continue to do so. They must ensure proper vehicle maintenance to prevent crashes caused by mechanical faults,” he said.

    The sector commander called on motorists to adopt defensive driving techniques, especially during the ember months, stressing the need for road users to drive responsibly to safeguard lives and support national development.

    A Total of 16 persons have died in an accident that occurred at Ajue community on the Ore-Ondo highway.

    They were said to have been burnt.

    The accident, which happened at 8pm on Monday involved a Toyota Hiace bus and a truck.

    Witnesses said dangerous overtaking led to head-on-collision and vehicles burst into flames.

    However, three persons were seriously injured while two others escaped unhurt.

    It was gathered that the vehicles might have been conveying fuel which resulted in the fire.

    Ondo Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ibitoye Samuel, who confirmed the incident, said the rescue ended about 11pm.

    Eight persons were said to have died yesterday in a road crash at Ogbese, on the Akure-Owo Road in Ondo State.

    Seven others were said to be receiving treatment at the State Specialists Hospital in Akure, the state capital.

    It was learnt that the accident, which occurred at 4 a.m, involved a tractor without a headlamp.

    The tractor reportedly collided with a Toyota Hiace commercial bus from Lagos and heading to Jigawa State.

    Another truck from Owo was said to have crashed into the two vehicles on the same spot.

    The eight of the passengers in the Toyota bus were said to have died instantly and their bodies were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

    The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Rotimi Adeleye, blamed the accident on speeding of the drivers.

    He warned motorists against night travels.

    Adeleye said he had informed the head of the Shasha Market near the scene of the accident to check the hospital for possible identification of the victims, who he suspected must be from the North.

    The FRSC chief also led his other officers to clear the debris of the three ill-fated vehicles to allow free flow of traffic on the busy road.

    Two persons were feared dead yesterday when two trailers had a head-on collision on the dreaded “Oke Maria” in Oka-Akoko, headquarters of Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

    Eyewitness said the ever-busy Abuja road was blocked for several hours, leading to diversion of traffic to Okene-Ayere-Akunu-Ajowa-Ikare-Akungba Akoko and Isua-Ise-Ikare-Akungba Akoko route.

    Men of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) at the Oka-Akoko outpost restored normalcy and towed the vehicles away to ease traffic flow.

    The Ikare Unit Commander of the FRSC, Jimoh Basiru, said his men had removed the bodies to Iwaro-Oka General Hospital’s mortuary.

    Akoko Police Area Commander, Razak Rauf, decried incessant road crashes on the same route.

    He attributed the carnage to recklessness and lack of regard for road signs.

    The area commander also hinged the problem on the topography of that spot.

    The paramount ruler of Oka-Akoko, Oba Yusuf Adeleye, regretted that the road had claimed many lives and aroused regular prayers among the road users.

    The monarch said the rehabilitation of the road by the state government was not a licence for drivers to overload and engage in reckless driving.

    It was learnt that the two drivers of the ill-fated trailers survived the accident and ran away.

    Last week, 20 passengers also died on the same route – between Epinmi and Isua-Akoko – and the affected vehicles were burnt into ashes.

    Fifteen passengers travelling on Epinmi-Isua Akoko road in Ondo State reportedly died yesterday in a road accident.

    Sources said the victims were travelling in a bus when their vehicle had a head-on collision with an unregistered second-hand imported (Tokunbo) vehicle.

    It was learnt that the vehicles caught fire, which nearly consumed all the occupants of the bus.

    An eyewitness said the Tokunbo vehicle, which was driven by a military man, reportedly overtook another vehicle on the busy Epinmi-Isua-Abuja road.

    The Police Area Commander for Akoko, Razak Rauf, who was on a routine trip to some divisions in the area, attributed the accident to recklessness.

    A community leader and Chief Imam of Epinmi-Akoko, Alhaji Maliki Alimi, regretted the incessant road carnage on the route in recent time.

    Men of Ikare Akoko unit of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) were said to have been deployed for the rescue operation.

    They reportedly evacuated the bodies of the victims to Ikare-Akoko specialist hospital’s mortuary.

    It was also learnt that the drivers of the two vehicles survived but sustained various degrees of injuries and were receiving treatment in the hospital.

    Two injured in Ondo road crash hospitalised

    A road crash involving a Sienna bus and a commercial motorcycle, popularly called Okada, occurred yesterday at Semusemu area of Ikare in Akoko Northeast Local Government Area of Ondo State.

    It caused public disturbance.

    Angry residents would have set the vehicle ablaze but for the timely intervention of policemen and officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).

    An eyewitness, Samuel Ojo, said the motorcyclist, who carried a passenger, hurriedly made a U-turn on the road, forcing the oncoming vehicle to hit his Okada and its occupants.

    They sustained head injuries and were rushed to State Specialist Hospital at Ikare Akoko as emergency patients.

    The hospital’s Chief Medical Director (CMD) Dr Wale Oguntuase said both victims were treated and referred to the Federal Medical Centre at Owo.

    The Commander of Ikare Unit of the FRSC, Jimoh Basiru, warned road users to note that vehicles plying the road have increased.

    This, he said, is due to the diversion of heavy vehicles from Akungba-Iwaro-Oke-Oka to Isua Road, which is under rehabilitation.

    The commander called for patience among road users, especially while making U-turn.

    Basiru said the use of crash helmet was in force to prevent head injuries in case of an accident.

    He noted that the ember months are not killer months, as erroneously believed by many people.

    The FRSC commander warned against reckless driving on public highways.

    Four persons, including two suspected commercial sex workers, have been confirmed dead in a motor accident at Yaba, in Ondo town of Ondo State.

    The accident, which involved a brown Volvo car  and a truck occurred at 10:30 p.m on Sunday while the victims were returning from a night show.

    It was gathered that the Volvo driver, said to be a popular trader at Ododibo Street in Ondo town, was returning from Agbogboke.

    He was said to have clashed with a commercial motorcyclist and escaped from the scene.

    The driver reportedly veered off the road and rammed into the stationary truck beside the road.

    Scores of symphatisers struggled to remove the bodies of the victims trapped inside the vehicle.

    Several personal effects of the victims and human parts littered the spot.

    Some sympathisers, including families and friends of the victims, wailed uncontrollably on the scene.

    A senior police officer attached to the Motor Traffic Division (MTD) of the Yaba Divisional Police Station, who participated in the rescue operation but spoke in confidence, described the accident as unfortunate.

    The MTD official said it happened barely nine days after one of the victims had a similar accident with a commercial motorcycle operator in the town.

    The police officer said the divisional station got a distress call from the residents, following a bang from the accident scene few metres to their office.

    He said some officers rushed to the scene for the rescue while the residents joined them.

    The police officers confirmed the death of three persons on the spot, while another one was injured and rushed to Ondo Specialist Hospital for treatment.

    Doctors reportedly confirmed the injured dead by the doctors.

    The Ondo town Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), RS Unit 11, Olarewaju Adewumi, an Assistant Corps Commander (ACC), said he was on annual leave.

    The Head of Operations in Ondo town’s Unit Command, Mrs. Mary Oladele, described the development as unfortunate.

    12 killed in Ondo road crash

    Twelve persons reportedly lost their lives yesterday afternoon in a lone road crash involving a Toyota Hiace bus carrying 20 passengers while eight others sustained serious injuries. The carnage was said to have occurred on yet-to-be completed Ajowa-Gedegede road brigde.

    According to Onigedegede of Igedegede, Oba Walidu Ekun, it was the deafening sound of the vehicle around 3.00 pm that attracted sympathisers to the scene. The spot was littered with blood and mangled corpses.

    Confirming the incident, Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC), Vincent Jack, said his men went on rescue operation and took the corpses to Ikare-Akoko State Specialist Hospital Mortuary, while the injured had been referred to Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owo.

    Jack attributed the incident to recklessness of the driver,urging Motorists to be cautious on highways and avoid excessive speeding.
