Ondo South should support ‘potential two-term candidate,’ says group

A group, ‘Ondo South Citizens’ Forum,’ yesterday urged All Progressives Congress (APC) members from Ondo South Senatorial District to support an aspirant who can spend two terms of eight years in office.

The group said if Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is elected in the November poll, he may face a constitutional constraint that may limit him to one term, thereby jeopadising the chance of the South to produce a governor for eight years.

The chairman of the Lagos State chapter of the forum, Otunba Sola Olatunji, told reporters in Lagos that Ondo South should not be denied to enjoy the governorship slot for two terms of eight years.

The forum of Ondo South citizens made up of 6 LGA, and we  are residents in Lagos State. These local governments are : Odigbo, Okitipupa, Irele, Ile Oluji/Okeigbo, Ilaje and Ese Odo.

Olatunji said:”It’s now the turn of Ondo South to produce a governor for eith years, like their counterparts from Ondo Central and Ondo North had their chance, respectively

“We are  alarmed that out of these 16 aspirants who have been cleared by the APC screening  committee, including the governor, while  majority of the aspirants are insisting on eight years for Ondo South, the governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa is the only one who is clamouring for four years because, he  is already limited by law.

“He can’t be sworn in more than twice, which will ultimately surcharge Ondo South.”

Olatunji said while Aiyedatiwa has the right to aspire to any position of his choice, the forum had made frantic efforts to prevail on him to drop his ambition and think of other alternative political option he can pursue when  his current tenure expires in February 2025.

He said:”We are very much aware of the collateral damage his emergence as the flag bearer of APC will cause the party in the Nov 2024 gubernatorial election.

“All efforts to prevail on  Mr. Governor to see reason while his ambition is not being supported by his people back home, but he has remained adamant with his ‘no vacancy in Alagbaka’ propaganda. In his desperation to realise his selfish objectives, we are also aware that Ondo State treasury has since been flunged open, and people are really  cashing out as  stomach infrastructure induced endorsement is in the air.

“But we are more disturbed that some respected party leaders, mostly from Ondo Central, have joined forces with the governor to sabotage the 8 years of Ondo South without looking at the grave implications of their actions. While we are not questioning their rights to associate, we see this unholy alliance as a conspiracy hatched to sabotage the political interest of Ondo State. We see this conspiracy by some political glutton in Ondo Central who are hell bent to ensure power returns to Ondo Central within four years, as against the expected 8 years. We are saying that this conspiracy will produce nothing but political upheaval, and it will be too unbeatable to the conspirators. A stitch in time saves nine, as often said. That is why we are making this clarion call to the leadership of APC and political gladiators in Ondo State to weigh the consequences of hurting the Southern citizens and their capacity to revolt through their votes in November.

“To us in Ondo South, where we have people with impeccable characters,  capacity and credible credentials to function effectively for 8 years amongst the aspirants, we are demanding that only aspirant eligible for eight years will be supported in Ondo South.  We are not going to support any aspirant who is limited to 4 years, only, by law. As  such, any  aspirant pursuing such aspiration is driven by personal ego and not in the interest of the public.

  • Row over Ondo South senatorial election result

Stakeholders in Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately announce the result of last Saturday’s election in Ondo South Senatorial District.

Addressing reporters in Akure, the state capital, the Coordinator of the Presidential Campaign Organisation, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), said the PDP won in 11 local government areas out of the 18 in the state to show its popularity.

Jegede urged the electoral body to announce the result of Ondo South Senatorial District election, which according to him had already been won by Nicholas Tofowomo.

Jegede said: “The PDP has got the highest votes in the six local government areas that make up the district. It is now the duty of the Returning Officer to sum up the figures and declare the winner.

Jegede, who was the 2016 governorship candidate of the PDP in Ondo State, alleged that some people were making subterranean moves to manipulate the outcome of the election.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria urged INEC and the Returning Officer to save the nation’s democracy and officially declare the result.

He advised the electoral umpire to resist any temptation to deny Tofowomo his mandate.

Jegede said the result of the poll was already known to the public, adding that it should be declared immediately to the public.

The PDP campaign coordinator wondered why some presiding officers, mostly National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, were being recalled after the poll to INEC office.

He insisted that nobody should interfere with the result.

Jegede, who expressed appreciation to PDP supporters for voting massively for the party, warned INEC against pulling unnecessary strains on Ondo South Senatorial election result.

At the conference were the National Vice Chairman of the party, Dr Eddy Olafeso, the party’s State Chairman Clement Faboyede and the senator-elect for Ondo Central District, among others.

  • Ondo south: Nobody can stop my re-election – Omogunwa

The embattled lawmaker represen-ting Ondo South district in the National Assembly, Senator Yele Omogunwa, at the weekend, said his emergence as the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate was ordained by God. He urged his detractors to know that absolute power belongs to God which nobody could manipulate. The lawmaker, who is the former Commissioner for Works in the state, wondered why some people were wishing him dead, describing the action as sheer political desperation.

Omogunwa, whose clearance by the National Working Committee (NWC) has been generating friction among some stakeholders in the APC particularly from his district, however appreciated the party’s leadership for the opportunity given him to emerge as the candidate. There was a protest at Ore, headquarters of Odigbo local government, on Thursday, where party members mobilised themselves from Eseodo, Ilaje, Okitipupa, Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo, Irele and Odigbo local government areas to reject the candidature of Omogunwa.

All three sitting Senators in the state were cleared to contest 2019 election by the NWC of the APC because of their loyalty. Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu is said to be supporting the commissioner representing Ondo State on the Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Lucky Ayedatiwa, instead of Omogunwa for the seat. Omogunwa in an interview with reporters in Akure said “my mandate is divine with the support of the citizenry in the state. It underscores the capacity of APC to engender dialogue.”

At a news briefing in Akure, the state capital, the youths mainly from Ikale axis of Okitipupa local government lamented the alleged retrogression in the area due to poor representation particularly at the National Assembly.

The chairman, Ikale Youth Organization (IYO) Ademola Akinrinlola who spoke with reporters said Ademulegun, the chairman of Odigbo local government in Ondo state is their sole candidate for the Ondo South Senatorial seat.

The youth leader said irrespective of the political platform Ademulegun was to run for the election, they would support him for victory.

IYO lamented that the Ondo South senatorial district had suffered a major setback due to bad leadership and errors in appointment.

It said “Due to poor representation and appointment error by the executive, Ondo South has suffered a major setback in terms of development and infrastructure.”

“We are in darkness for the past four years now and we have a senator, a minister and other elected and appointed representatives as if we have none. It is irritating that many of them are making move to return for the second term despite their present failures.

“Just imagine our current Senator in Ondo south is also seeking re-election despite his obvious failures in governance. He has been in the Senate since over three years as if the Ondo South senatorial seat is vacant”.

The aggrieved youths maintained that they would go out to all the local governments and wards in the district to mobilize support for Ademulegun.

  • Group laments non-availability of UTME centres in Ondo South

Group laments non-availability of UTME centres in Ondo South

A socio-political group, Ikale Youth Ambassadors (IYA), yesterday decried the hardship faced by candidates who sat for the last Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) from the southern senatorial district of Ondo State . The group noted that the candidates went through unpleasant ordeal due to non-availability of certified centres in the area.

It, however, lauded Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on the asphalting of inner roads at the Ondo State University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa. Rising from its quarterly meeting held in Okitipupa, IYA faulted the hardships that JAMB candidates from the six local government areas faced when writing the UTME.

It also wondered why an acclaimed University of Science and Technology and a Polytechnic located in the area do not have the basic infrastructural requirements needed to conduct a qualifying examination for tertiary education, but have been graduating students in Computer Science and related courses.

In a communiqué signed by the Bobola Olusola, Coordinator; Ogunyelu Gbenga, Secretary; and Edamisan Ikuemonisan, facilitator, it urged Akeredolu to ensure fair distribution of developmental portfolios across the three senatorial district in the coming executive cabinet and strive to deviate from what it called the selfish style of the immediate past administration.

It also called for inclusion of young persons in the running of government under the incumbent administration, while noting with dismay the border dispute between Irele and Sabomi in Ese-Odo local government area and the harrowing experiences it has brought on the feuding communities.

  • ‘Cancel Ondo South result’

The All Progressives Congress senatorial candidate in Ondo South, Morayo Lebi, has called for the cancellation of the result of the election from the district.
In a statement, Lebi alleged irregularities in the six local governments in the district.
He said the irregularities were supervised by some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the district.
The APC candidate alleged that manual voting, ballot box snatching took place mostly in Irele Local Government and other areas.
He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the result and set a new date for a fresh election in the southern senatorial district.
