Submit your arms within 21 days,  Akeredolu urges militants

Ondo State government Thursday granted amnesty to all Niger/Delta militants in the state, urging them to embrace the programme.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu who announced the amnesty in Akure, Thursday, said an amnesty office has already been opened in Akure, the state capital with centres in five oil communities of Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Government Areas.

Akeredolu gave the militants 21 days ultimatum to submit their arms at any of the amnesty offices in the state.

He hailed the federal government’s support for the amnesty programme, stressing that his deputy, Agboola Ajayi has been appointed the chairman of the committee on the amnesty programme.

According to him, the committee would also work with the office of the Special Adviser to the president on Niger Delta Affairs, who is also the chairman of the federal government’s amnesty programme.

The governor urged traditional rulers to support the amnesty programme, while calling on the militants to embrace the programme in the interest of peace and development of the state.

He maintained that Amnesty programme would not be run in palaces, but by the committee members assigned by the state government.

The militants numbering 100 openly signified their intention to submit their arms at the event
attended by the acting governor of Delta State and representative of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs

Akeredolu said the state government would henceforth take punitive measures to curtail militancy in the state.

He said” Our country cannot continue to be in crisis. It is time we embrace peace and shun crisis.”

He assured that the state government would provide jobs for militants who willingly surrender their arms, adding that the government would also organize trainings for them to make them relevant in the society.

The Olugbo of Ugbo, Oba Fredrick Akinruntan , who spoke on behalf of other traditional rulers advised the government to ensure that only genuine militants benefit from the amnesty programme.

He also stressed the need for the government to appoint only indigenes of the oil producing areas of the state as officials of the amnesty programme.

  • Ondo gets licence for FTZ, targets industrialisation

The Ondo State government says it has secured a licence to establish another free trade zone (FTZ) to be sited in Eruna,  Aiyetoro, Ilaje Local Government Area.

The state’s Commissioner for Commerce, Trade and Industry, Mr. Ayo Abiola, said this was borne out of the desire to transform the state to the new investment haven for industrialists and businessmen.

Abiola expressed optimism that once the state industrial platform is started, investors that move in will get higher returns on their investments than any other state can offer in the country.

“If you site your industry or business very close to our free-trade zone, it means by sea, your goods will be less than 70 kilometres to Lagos. If you site at Ore industrial park, you will be hovering around 230 km to Lagos, which is just barely two and half hours,” he explained, adding that two of the three major roads that links Lagos to the North passes through the state, a factor he said gave an investor the shortest route to the northern market.

He said an industrial policy for the state is in the offing. The policy, he explained, would drive the state industrialisation plans as it would have given assurances to prospective investors of a non negotiable minimum base line as a right for their investments.

“Such investors will have this as a confidence level that this is the template. Possibly, we are looking at a situation where we will take it to the State House of Assembly to pass as a law. I believe if we have a government that believes in putting the platform there, investors confidence in the state will be boosted,” he said.

The Commissioner said most of the things that have been done in the area of industrialisation are to ensure that the private sector holds the controlling shares.

He spoke on other preparations towards the project.

He said:  “NBET had already shared the draft PPA with us for reviewing and the necessary documentations for signing the PPA are being put together at the moment. Due diligence exercise is ongoing with the Gas Aggregation Company Nigeria Limited (GACN) while licensing documentation after approval to generate power under unsolicited condition  on the strength of our partnership with Ondo State is under preparation. It will be submitted shortly.

“Next year, there will be two golf tournaments- one in Smoky Hills and the other at the Atosin Golf Course, which is in completion stage. The golf course is unique in terms of its topography.

He disclosed that the amphitheatre at the resort will host artistic events every month as a way to make Ondo State number one tourists destination. He assured that the state is doing all within its capability to bring Idanre to global tourism map. “This Idanre will no doubt next year be a preferred destination for tourists and fun seekers.  In fact, more of the tree houses will be built while the Mare festival will be bigger,” he added.

Governor Mimiko who was honoured by Guild of Tourism Journalists of Nigeria, with the Best Domestic Tourism  Brand award, commended the organisers of the festival for their performance.

The Director General, Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC), Mrs Sally Mbanefo who was special guest lauded the efforts of Governor Mimiko for his commitment towards uplifting the status of the state into a major tourist destination in Nigeria. She said Ondo State is one of the states in the country that has demonstrated serious commitment to developing the state as a tourism hub.

According to her “as a result of the level of development in the state’s tourism sector, I have continued to promote the various tourism potentials to the global community. Ondo State people are great in hospitality, each time I visit the state, there is always something beautiful that makes me feel at home. As an advocate of domestic tourism, the changes in the state and particularly Idanre hills since the last time I visited it are so dramatic.

Ondo State is today the shining light in the Medical Tourism in the country. I commend the level of work carried out at the Idanre Resort, which has employed more than two hundred workers.”

Mbanefo described Ondo State as a major tourism destination because of the large deposit of tourism potentials. The government, according to her, has worked so hard to improve the status of the state economically. “Within my short stay in the office as the Director-General of the NTDC, I have tour more than 20 states and participated in many festivals but south West particularly Ondo state is the best, the development of tourism particularly the resort is an awesome and amazing experience which will be fascinating. The resort is another testimony of the transformational work of the state governor and his team”

She hinted that Overland Airline has indicated interest to commence commercial flight from Akure-Abuja and Lagos in order to facilitate the movement of tourists and fun seekers to various tourism destinations in the state. She noted that NTDC would ensure that domestic tourism remains the best approach to promote Nigeria tourism and create wealth for the nation and people. “Hence, the corporation is investing on promoting domestic tourism to empower local government at the grass root level and create jobs at the local government level,” she said.

  • Ondo faults delay in payment of NERFUND

ONDO State government has lamented the delay in the release of the National Economic Reconstruction Fund(NERFUND) by the federal government.

The Commissioner for Employment and Productivity, Ogundeji Iroju, disclosed this during a meeting with artisans in the state.

He flayed the delay in the payment of the counterpart fund to the coffers of the state by the National Economic Reconstruction Fund to artisans.

The commissioner said the government was doing all within its capacity to alleviate the unemployment problem in the state by providing jobs to the teeming youths.

The 8, 000 youths given direct employment by the government, Iroju said, included those in the traffic section, waste management department and direct labour agency.

He said the government would soon start the process of employment into the civil service to further give employment opportunities to the youths in the state.

On the complaint that they were yet to benefit from the loans given to artisans in the state, Iroju said the first tranche of the fund was solely from the state government as the Federal government through NERFUND was yet to redeem its pledge.

According to him: “We had appraised the ODSG/NERFUND loan programme and it was discovered that the MoU stipulated that a total sum of N1billion was to be disbursed as loan and both parties were to contribute at the ratio 4:6 in two batches.

“Unfortunately Ondo State government contributed her own N200million in the first batch while NERFUND is yet to contribute its own part until now.”

Iroju said all attempts to make the federal government agency fulfill its part of the deal has not sailed through.
