  • Ondo community, Deji of Akure clash over ‘disputed land’ boundary

Ondo community, Deji of Akure clash over ‘disputed land’ boundary

Scores of residents of communities in Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State have protested over an alleged encroachment and sale of their ancestral land by the Deji of Akure kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi.

The residents, who are mostly farmers and community leaders, lamented that the encroachment has continued to disrupt their farming, threaten livelihoods, and heighten security in the ancient communities in Idanre.

But, Oba Aladelusi dismissed claims that the disputed land belongs to Idanre, describing the allegation as false, misleading, and an attempt at blackmail.

The monarch’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr Michael Adeyeye, said the land is part of Akure Kingdom.

According to him, the issue has been settled by the Supreme Court, which listed lands belonging to Akure, including Aponmu and Olokuta communities.

“It is a total falsehood and an unwarranted allegation against the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi. The said land belongs to Akure and not Idanre community.

“There is a Supreme Court judgment, and in that judgment, all the lands belonging to Akure were clearly stated and listed, including Aponmu and Olokuta. The court clearly ruled that Idanre or anyone else should no longer trespass on those lands,” he added.

The Akure monarch explained that the same individuals making the claims had previously taken the matter to court and lost, noting that none of the judgments delivered against them had been appealed.

But angered by the development, the aggrieved residents staged a protest to call the attention of the state government led by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to the disputed land.

They decried the alleged land grabbing, saying some “powerful individuals” in the government were also being used to acquire the land.

Speaking on behalf of the aggrieved residents, the Olu of Onipanu, Claudius Ademetoye, alleged that the disputed land is not under the authority of the Akure monarch.

Ademetoye said Aiyedatiwa should intervene and protect the Idanre territory from what he termed “Akure’s expansionist,” noting that similar concerns have also been raised by other neighbouring communities of Owena and Olokuta.

According to him, the continued encroachment of their land is threatening the peace and economic stability of the host communities.

“This land is not Akure land. It is outside Deji’s jurisdiction. We are the rightful owners and we have valid Certificates of Occupancy to prove our ownership yet attempts are being made to sell what does not belong to Akure,” he said.

The Olu of Aponmu, Adeyemi Bajulaye, said they inherited the land from their ancestors.

He warned that failure of the government to act could lead to serious conflict as the communities are determined to defend their ancestral economic lifeline.

“These lands were bequeathed to us by our ancestors. They are our heritage, our identity, and our means of survival. No authority can legitimately take what our forefathers handed down to us,” he said.

Aladelusi stated that some of the individuals laying claim to the land were granted temporary permission by Akure to farm there.

“They were allowed to use the land temporarily for farming. That does not translate to ownership. You cannot come to another man’s land and begin to claim it as yours,” he said.

The Akure monarch said the land is being acquired for development, adding that the people of Akure are committed to compensating those whose crops may be affected.

“Kabiyesi (monarch) is a humane and peace-loving ruler. Compensation will be paid to those whose crops are affected during the acquisition process,” he assured.

He, however, warned against actions capable of causing unnecessary tension, stressing that Akure had shown maturity by setting up a committee to address boundary issues, with the state government also clarifying its position on the matter.

“We are peace-loving people and ready to accommodate our neighbours, but we will not tolerate cheap blackmail or deliberate provocation,” he added.

Ondo police bust Togolese-led human trafficking syndicate, rescue victims in Akure

The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended three suspected human traffickers led by a Togolese and rescued several victims in Akure, the state capital.

The command disclosed development in a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, and made available to journalists in Akure.

Abayomi said the arrest followed an intense investigation into a suspected trafficking syndicate operating at the Oda town in Akure South Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, trouble began in June 2024 when a 30-year-old Togolese national, John Apiah, relocated to Oda to work as a hair stylist.

He said Apiah was said to have met two young women, Blessings Assiah, 22, and Laro Larisa, 21, with whom he later rented a one-room and parlour self-contained apartment belonging to a 40-year-old landlord, Owoeye.

Abayomi said that police investigations revealed that Apiah allegedly used the two women to lure unsuspecting victims with false promises of securing international passports and American visas.

He noted that the suspects were said to have collected 600,000 CFA from Charity Paketerima, 27; 500,000 CFA from Mohammed Assiah, 25; and another 500,000 CFA from Kanate Dekadja, 35, under the guise of processing travel documents.

Abayomi stressed that after collecting the money, the victims were lodged in a hotel before being moved to the rented apartment in Oda town, where they were allegedly kept under suspicious conditions.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that sometime in June 2024, one John Apiah, male, aged 30 years, a Togolese national, came to Oda Town, Akure to work as hair stylist, where he met two young women identified as Blessings Assiah, female, aged 22 years, and Laro Larisa, female, aged 21 years. The trio subsequently rented a one room and palour apartment from one Owoeye, male, aged 40 years, in Oda Town.

“Further investigation showed that John allegedly used the two women to lure unsuspecting victims with promises of procuring international passports and American visas. In the course of this fraudulent operation, the suspect reportedly collected the sum of 600,000 CFA from Charity Paketerima, female, aged 27 years; 500,000 CFA from Mohammed Assiah, male, aged 25 years; and 500,000 CFA from Kanate Dekadja, male, aged 35 years.

“After collecting the money, the victims were initially lodged in a hotel before being moved to the suspects’ rented apartment in Oda Town, where they were kept under suspicious circumstances.

“Acting on credible intelligence, the Police promptly swung into action, leading to the rescue of the victims and the arrest of the suspects,” he said in the statement.

Reacting, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, warned landlords and property owners to always conduct proper background checks on prospective tenants to prevent their properties from being used for criminal activities.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating human trafficking and other trans-border crimes, while urging residents to support the police with credible information to enhance security across the state.

Secretary of the foundation’s Board of Trustees, Mrs Folashade Ajijo, said the initiative was inspired by the legacy of their parents, indigenes, who were committed to community service..

…bandits yet to contact family, says sources

The Ondo State Police Command said it has deployed additional security personnel and formations to ensure the safe rescue of the kidnapped nursing mother and her baby in the state.

The victims were reportedly seized by suspected armed bandits while travelling to the market along the Supare-Ayegunle road in Akoko South West LGA of the state.

The nursing mother, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken alongside her baby during the incident.

Eyewitnesses had said the gunmen struck suddenly, causing panic among other road users who fled the scene for safety.

The abduction has heightened fear among residents of the Akoko axis, particularly over the growing insecurity on rural roads in the area.

Speaking on Wednesday in a telephone interview, the spokesman for the Ondo Police Command, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, assured that the security agents would rescue the victims and apprehend the perpetrators.

“Efforts are already in place. We have deployed additional security apparatus to that area.

“I can assure you that the perpetrators of this crime will not go scot-free. The law will definitely catch up with them,” the police spokesman added.

One of the sources who spoke under the condition of anonymity said the family is worried about the “silence” on the abduction of the mother and her baby.

Protest rocks Ondo stadium over appointment of acting general manager

Sporting activities at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure were disrupted on Tuesday as sports contingents protested the appointment of Mrs Evelyn Lebi as Acting General Manager of the Ondo State Sports Council.

The protesters, made up of sports union members and leaders, coaches and athletes, said the appointment could negatively affect the future of sports administration in the state.

The Nation reports that Mrs Lebi was earlier appointed by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as a part-time member of the board of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), representing the Ministry of Sports, on June 23, 2024, before her subsequent elevation to Acting General Manager of the State Sports Council.

Speaking to journalists on behalf of the protesters, the Coordinating Chairman of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), Fisayo Bello, said the state of sports in Ondo was far from satisfactory and required a competent technocrat to revitalise the sector.

Bello argued that the Sports Council needed strong and experienced leadership to overcome its current challenges and therefore called on Governor Aiyedatiwa to reconsider the appointment of Mrs Lebi to the position.

“We need someone with passion for sports who can take us back to our glorious days, not backwards.

“She contested four years ago, we said no and we are saying no now, we want a better person, we want a technocrat that can take us back to our glorious day, not backwards,” he lamented.

Chairman of the Ondo State Professional Coaches Association, Joshua Ogunbiyi, who also spoke, said stakeholders had previously expressed reservations about Mrs Lebi’s suitability.

Mr Ogunbiyi added that the sector needed fresh energy and effective leadership to move forward.

“The stage at which we are now, sport is not moving forward. We want somebody, a vibrant and competent general manager, this time around. Somebody that will come and revive sport development.

“A person like Lebi has contested for this position for over three times. And we have made government to realise that this woman is not competent. This woman is not a good woman.

“She served here about 12, 13 years ago before she left and if we continue to say to the world all the atrocities this woman has committed, where she previously served, in fact, will not leave this place.

“And that is why we believe that if government want to bring anybody, we are not against the governor to bring whoever he feels can come here and revive sport. But as far as we are concerned, Lebi is not one of them,” he said.

Similarly, Mr Idowu Afun, General Captain of Ondo State Athletes, appealed to the state government to appoint a leader who would inspire confidence among athletes and stakeholders.

When contacted, Mrs Lebi declined comments over calls for her sack from the position.

But reacting to the protest, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Henry Omoyofunmi, said the protest was unnecessary.

Mrs Omoyofunmi said Mrs Lebi was a qualified professional with over 15 years’ experience at the Sports Council and was currently serving as Director of Sports in the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

He explained that her appointment followed due process after the expiration of the tenure of the former general manager, adding that the Head of Service had posted her to the council in line with civil service procedures.

The commissioner expressed confidence that the appointment would strengthen, rather than hinder, sports development in the state.

Ondo Justice ministry, three others lead in performance review

The Institute for Governance and Leadership Accountability (IGLA) has released its comprehensive 2025 end-of-year assessment of the Ondo State Government under the leadership of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

It described the administration as focused, purposeful and steadily redefining governance through competence, accountability and people-centred service delivery.

The assessment was carried out across three states from each of the six geopolitical zones, with Lagos, Ogun and Ondo states sampled in the Southwest.

Unveiling the report in Abuja, the institute noted that Governor Aiyedatiwa’s administration has, within a challenging national economic climate, recorded commendable progress in infrastructure renewal, fiscal discipline, justice administration, human capital development and social inclusion. The report credited the governor’s calm but decisive leadership style, strategic planning and insistence on performance as key drivers of the results recorded across ministries.

According to the assessment, the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, OON, emerged as the overall best-performing member of the executive council (exco). The institute described his stewardship of the justice sector as exemplary, citing his firm defence of the rule of law, proactive legal reforms, institutional discipline and uncommon accessibility to both the public and professional stakeholders. His performance, the report stated, reflects intellectual depth, administrative efficiency and an unwavering commitment to justice as a foundation for good governance.

Beyond his primary assignment at the Justice Ministry, Dr. Ajulo’s contributions include chairing several committees and agencies within the government, including Anti-Human Trafficking, Anti-Land-Grabbing and serving as Special Adviser to the government on World Bank and related matters.

Beyond his primary assignment at the Justice Ministry, Dr. Ajulo’s contributions include chairing several critical statutory bodies and committees within the government, notably the Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, the Anti-Land-Grabbing Task Force, and the Office of the Public Defender. He also serves as the State Security Adviser on World Bank supported projects and related matters.

Ranking second was the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Olaolu Akindolire, whose strategic coordination of the state’s planning architecture and budgeting process was praised as central to the administration’s stability and fiscal coherence. The institute noted that his work has provided the economic compass guiding government priorities, aligning policy objectives with realistic revenue frameworks and development outcomes.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Banji Ajaka, placed third in the overall rankings. The report highlighted his steady leadership in strengthening health care delivery, improving responsiveness within the health system and prioritising the welfare of citizens through improved medical infrastructure and service coordination across the state.

In fourth position was the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, whose tenure was described as reform-driven and forward-looking. The institute commended his focus on improving learning environments, restoring confidence in public education and laying a sustainable foundation for human capital development through policy clarity and sectoral engagement.

Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure,  Ayorinde Olawoye, ranked fifth, earning recognition for visible progress in road construction, urban renewal and infrastructure maintenance across the state. His performance was noted for technical competence, project execution and alignment with the governor’s infrastructural vision.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Seun Abosede Osamaye, placed sixth, with the report lauding her passionate advocacy for women, children and vulnerable groups, as well as her consistent grassroots engagement and social intervention initiatives.

Other commissioners were rated fairly across their respective portfolios, with performance scores reflecting varying degrees of achievement, responsiveness, accessibility and public engagement.

The institute said unlike perception-based polls, the assessment was conducted using measurable indicators including achievement, appearance, responsiveness, understanding of responsibility, accessibility, comportment, time management, communication ability, cordiality with workers, and cordiality with the public. Each commissioner was graded on a scale of 1 to 100 across these parameters.

The assessment exercise was conducted through a structured, evidence-based evaluation process carried out over several months. The exercise involved independent field observations, structured interviews, media performance reviews, stakeholder feedback, and desk analysis of policy outputs and service delivery records across ministries. To ensure balance and objectivity, the assessment drew inputs from civil servants, professionals, community leaders, media practitioners, and policy analysts, while also comparing performance benchmarks across three states selected from each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. This comparative approach allowed Ondo State’s cabinet performance to be measured against peer administrations operating under similar national economic conditions.

Speaking on the report, the Director of the institute, Dr. George Olayiwola Aladesuru, described Governor Aiyedatiwa’s exco as “a carefully assembled team of professionals whose collective output underscores the governor’s eye for capacity, character, and competence.” He added that the overall performance “speaks to leadership that values result over noise and service over spectacle.”

The institute further commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for building an exco that reflects balance, experience and dedication to public service, noting that the administration’s progress is a testament to purposeful leadership and teamwork.

It urged exco members to see the assessment as both an affirmation of effort and a roadmap for deeper engagement, improved accessibility, and even greater service to the people of Ondo State as the year draws to a close.

55-year-old man arrested for allegedly impregnating teenager in Ondo

A 55-year-old man, identified as Ademola Joshua, has been arrested for allegedly engaging in incest and sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl, resulting in pregnancy, in Ondo State.

Joshua was reportedly apprehended by local vigilantes at Ilara-Mokin in Ifedore Local Government Area of the state on Sunday, before being handed over to the police.

Ondo attack: Terrorists targeted monarch – Eyewitnesses recount New Year raid

    …Ondo monarch condemns attack

    …Police go after terrorists

Residents of Ipele-Owo in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State have recounted how gunmen invaded the community on New Year’s Eve in what was described as a foiled attempt to abduct the traditional ruler.

The attack, which occurred around 10pm, threw the community into panic as the assailants fired shots into the air and set a police station near the palace ablaze, forcing residents and police officers to flee.

An eyewitness said about 20 armed men, riding on motorcycles, stormed the town while many residents were preparing to attend crossover church services, prompting people to run for safety.

A resident, identified simply as Kunle, told journalists on Saturday that the gunmen were heading towards the palace to abduct the monarch, adding that the police station was targeted because of its proximity to the royal residence.

He said the plot was thwarted by the swift response of security operatives, who secured the monarch and prevented the attackers from gaining access to the palace.

Another resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the incident as terrifying, noting that many residents ran into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire before security agents eventually restored calm.

Meanwhile, the Olowo of Owo Kingdom and Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Traditional Rulers, His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III, has called on residents of Ipele to remain vigilant following the New Year’s Eve attack on the local police station.

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Sam Adewale, the monarch described the assault as “very sad and condemnable,” noting that it was aimed at disrupting peace and spoiling the festive atmosphere of the yuletide season.

Oba Ogunoye, who said no lives were lost in the incident, described the preservation of human life as a major relief despite the destruction of property.

He commiserated with the monarch of Ipele, the Nigeria Police Force and the entire community, assuring them of his full support and solidarity during the difficult period.

The monarch urged citizens to be security-conscious and proactive, advising them to report any suspicious movements or unfamiliar faces to the nearest security agency or trusted community leaders.

He stressed that community cooperation with security agencies is crucial for protecting lives and property, adding that collective responsibility remains the most effective strategy against crime.

The statement added, “He prayed for divine protection over the people, security personnel and the land, while expressing confidence that with unity, vigilance, cooperation with Security Agencies and God’s help, peace will continue to reign across Owo Local Government Area and Ondo State at large.”

Assessing the level of the attack on the Police Divisional Station, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Adebowale Lawal had vowed to clamp down on the terrorists behind the violent attack and destruction of the police facility.

The police boss, who visited the affected station in the company of other officers of the command, further affirmed that no life was lost and no church was destroyed during the attack.

He explained that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has already held a meeting with the security chiefs – which included the police, the military, the DSS, NSCDC, and the Amotekun Corps in order to get a proper briefing of the attack.

“Following the meeting held with the governor, we will be able to assess the situation of what happened yesterday and come up with strategies that we would activate in ensuring this attack doesn’t occurred again in our state.

“Also, let me correct this rumour on social media. No life was lost, and no church was attacked, but i want to assure you that we are up to the task. We are going to ensure that the perpetrators of this darstedly attack do not escape justice.

“Shortly after we leave here, we are going to meet again to continue with our deliberations, and that is going to be within the hands of the security agencies.

“You recall that prior to now, Ondo is one of the safest states in Nigeria. So if this happened yesterday, well, it’s something that we’ve been proactive, but this time around, we are going to be reactive.”

He added, “At the end of the investigation, we will be able to come up with what and what was looted and if is a terrorist attack, well, I wouldn’t call it a terrorist attack because we’ve not made arrests. We’ve not ascertained the veracity of that information.

“By the time we make an arrest and complete our investigation, we will be able to come up with something, whether they are actually terrorists. But the good people of Ondo should be assured that we don’t have terrorists in Ondo State.

“The governor has given us a marching order that the perpetrators should be arrested in no time, and we have just commenced the investigation. At the end of the investigation, if we are arrested, we need to come up with who and who were behind the attack. So, it’s too premature for us to conclude that they were terrorists.”

Following the attack, Governor Aiyedatiwa explained that the attack occurred while many residents were attending night services to usher in 2026.

The governor said that upon receiving the report, he immediately contacted the police and the Brigade Commander of the army, instructing that security personnel be deployed to support officers on patrol and protect residents.

Aiyedatiwa, however, has directed intensified patrols across communities and forest areas, stressing that security remains a 24-hour responsibility, particularly during festive periods.

He noted that security operatives, including members of the Joint Operations Task Force and Amotekun Rangers, were already on patrol throughout the state and in forested areas.
