    Ondo youths empower 40 young entrepreneurs with start-up tools, financial support

    The Akoko Youths Forum (AYF) in Ondo State has launched the distribution of business start-up tools and financial support to empower over 40 young entrepreneurs, in a bid to tackle unemployment and boost economic growth across Akokoland.

    The empowerment programme held in Ugbe Akoko, Akoko North-East Local Government Area, formed part of the activities at the Forum’s annual summit, which attracted young business owners and community stakeholders.

    President of the Forum, Engr. Blessing James Akeju described the initiative as a milestone in the Forum’s commitment to youth empowerment and economic development.

    “Today represents a historic moment in the history of this organization. We have been able to change the lives of 40 young persons in Akoko by empowering them to build a life for themselves,” Akeju said, stressing that the support would enable beneficiaries to expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods.

    He further lauded the resilience of Akoko youths and assured them of the continued support of the Forum’s national executives.

    Chairman of the Planning Committee, Regent Tinuade Babalola, represented by Prince Temitope Obamuwagun, urged the youths to embrace peace and unity, noting that the development of Akoko depends largely on their collective resolve to work together.

    Guest speaker at the summit, Dr. Bayo Fasunwon challenged the youths to maximize their talents, steer clear of vices such as cultism and internet fraud, and make meaningful contributions to their communities and academic pursuits.

    He also reiterated his call for the creation of Ose State, which he argued would accelerate development and economic growth in the region.

    Also speaking, the Chairman of Akoko North-East Local Government Area, Hon. Mutiu Olawale Mohammed, applauded the AYF leadership for initiating the empowerment scheme, which he said aligns with his vision of seeing young people thrive and live decently in society.

  • Vocational training centre for Ondo youths

    The Association of Positive Minded Friend (APF) has enlisted over 80 youths in Ondo City for vocational and technical training in order to add value to their lives and eradicate anti-social vices from society.

    Chairman of the association, Ebenezer Akinduyite spoke during the official inauguration of Vocational Technical Training for youths held at the Oba Oludoko Palace, Ondo.

    The chairman who was represented by the Secretary of the Association, Mr. Olakunle Martins said the association was established to eradicate cultism, crime, drugs abuse and other anti-social vices and to add values to the lives of the widows and widowers.

    According to him, when the youth are not engaged in job that could add values to their lives, they will be used as political thugs in the coming elections.

    Akinduyite, however, said the association had no political undertone but to empower the youth in Ondo and its environs for continuous peaceful co-existence.

    He, therefore, advised the participants to embrace the programme and endeavour to manage it thoroughly.

    Also, the Chairman of APF Advisory Board, Dr. Ajisola Omojeje urged the participants to key into the opportunity as it would be of great benefits to them.

     

  • NDE: 6,450 job opportunities for Ondo youths

    The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has revealed its commitment to create job opportunities in a bid to solve problems of unemployment among youths in Ondo State. Some of the jobs to be created include cosmetology training, basic open apprenticeship scheme (BNOAS) environmental beautification scheme (EBS), sustainable agricultural development scheme (SADS) and basic refresher course for CBN agric business and micro-enterprise enhancement scheme.

    According to the NDE Director-General, Dr Nasiru Ladan Argungu, 6, 450 youths will benefit from the scheme with 300 for BNOAS, 700 for cosmetology training, 50 for ANOAS, 50 for EBS and 50 for SADS.

    He added that 5,000 persons will benefit from basic refresher course in CBN agric business enterprise enhancement scheme.

    Argungu spoke in Akure, the state capital through his state coordinator, Mr R.O Ilori during the orientation and launch of this year’s Basic National Open Apprenticeship Training Scheme (B-NOAS).

    The D-G stated that the emerging young artisans would be the next generation of cosmetology product producers, corporate farmers, hairdressers, computer operators and tillers among others.

    He added that before long, they would, through multiplier effect, create several thousand other jobs and impacting on the real sector of the economy.

    The Ondo State coordinator, Ilori recounted some of the achievements of the NDE in the state since inception in 1987.

    He enjoined the trainees to be committed during the training exercise.

    According to him, 300 trainees would undergo a three-month intensive training in the three NDE/MDG skills centres in Akure, Ilu-titun and Irun-Ogbagi in Ondo Central, South and North senatorial districts in various skills.

    One of the trainees, Miss Olamide Omotayo hailed the Federal Government through the NDE for the gesture.

  • Ondo youths rally support for Buhari, Boroffice

    Scores of youths, under the aegis of Concerned Ondo North Youths (CONY), met on Monday in Akure, the state capital, to back President Muhammadu Buhari and the senator representing Ondo North, Prof Ajayi Boroffice.

    They passed a vote of confidence in the two All Progressives Party (APC) stalwarts seeking another term in office.

    The group, led by Olusuyi Ajayi, eulogised President Buhari and Senator Boroffice.

    They noted that the President had lifted the country in the last three years, while Boroffice, with his achievements, should be allowed to consolidate his “enviable work”.

    The youths said their resolve to support Boroffice for a third term was based on his performance and his support for the Buhari administration.

    The group expressed their support after a roadshow in Akure attended by market women, civil servants and students.

    Ajayi promised to replicate the meeting in each of the six local government areas in Ondo North before the APC senatorial primary.

    CONY members said Boroffice’s proactive representation resulted in the construction of Emergency Obstetrics Hospital,  skilla acquisition centres, bio-fuel ethanol plant,  provision of potable water in the six local government areas, interest-free loans and his assistance in securing Federal appointments for graduates, among others.

    The group hailed the Buhari administration for its anti-graft crusade, adding that the country would have collapsed if the President had lost the 2015 election.

    It urged the Minister of Works, Power and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, to repair the Owo-Ikare, Akungba-Isua and Ipele-Kabba roads, which they said have become almost impassable.

    At the meeting, a motion for endorsement of President Buhari and Boroffice was moved by a youth leader, Olakoyenikan Williams, and supported by Alhaja Modupe Akadiri, with over 1,000 youths present.

  • Ondo youths dump LP for APC

    Scores of youths from the six local government areas in the southern senatorial district of Ondo State have defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    The youths were received by the State Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, who was at the venue in Irele, headquarters of Irele Local Government area.

    The chairman who was represented by his deputy, Agabra Atili, congratulated them for taking a wise decision, and assured them of proper integration.

    The exercise was facilitated by the representative of the senatorial district at the upper chamber of the national assembly, Senator Yele Omogunwa.

    The defectors decried what they called “gross neglect” by the LP, which they adduced as the crux of their annoyance, and subsequent defection.

    The coordinator of the Aviary Youth Vanguard, Coastal Region, Oluwarotimi Omoge, said they decided to join the APC because of the sincerity of President Muhammadu Buhari.

    Omoge appealed to the state leadership of the party to concede to members of the group councillorship positions in their respective political wards.

    Gbajabiamila warns Ondo youths

    House of Representatives Majority Leader Femi Gbajabiamila has cautioned youths in Ondo State not to be used as thugs by politicians.

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker gave the advice in Owo, Ondo State after being honoured with Doctor of Science degree in Political Science at the 4th Convocation of Achievers University, Owo.

    He said: “The election in Ondo State is at hand. Youths should guard against falling into the hands of the politicians who will just use and abandon you”

    “I am not talking as a member of the APC. I am counselling you as somebody who had passed through your stage. Politicians are the same don’t be enticed with a token to cause violence and destroy your good name.”

    Gbajabiamila urged them to live with the fear of God, stressing that future still hold many things for them.

    On the present hardship in the country, the Majority Lleader urged Nigerians to be patient with the Buhari administration.

    At Mare Festival, 2Face dazzles Ondo youths

    Despite the hard times and biting fuel scarcity, which made movement almost impossible, the Ondo State government kept the spirit of the yearly Mare Festival alive at Idanre. The event featured a marathon race, mountain climbing competition, cultural, musical concerts and raffle draws. Many won prizes ranging from motorcycles to standing fans and table refridgerators, among others, Assistant Editor (Arts) OZOLUA UHAKHEME reports.

    Call it an enchanting dose of musical renditions or an exhilarating musical performances you are right.

    That was the atmosphere at the close of the Mare Festival 2015, a mountain-climbing sport cum cultural festival held at the Olofin Grammar School playground, Idanre in Ondo State penultimate weekend.

    The scintillating performances by the trio of female drummer Ara, Paul Play Dairo and African Queen crooner, 2Fface Idibia, who were the star acts at the festival, held the community spell-bound for several hours.

    After about seven hours of scintillating musical performances by talented young musicians as well as Ara, Dairo and 2Face, the crowd overran the stage at the close of the concert.

    Dairo’s rendition of his classic number Mose orire o took Governor Mimiko, his wife and other guests to the dance floor praising God for His mercy and blessings.

    Other musical acts and comedians that featured were Romario, LSK, DJ Slow, Sahel, Oyes, Innate Music, MC Timi, Melodite, Samba, Psalm 23, Salome, ODD, Ojoro, Iyalode and Southsouth Entertainment.

    The concert got to its peak when 2Face mounted the stage. And when Governor  Mimiko, who arrived the concert at 10 pm, was to give his remark around 2am, the surging crowd become uncontrollable. At a point, the crowd became restless and shouting, 2Face, 2Face, 2Face.

    “We want 2Face,” rent the air that was laden with thick cloud of dust from the marching jubilant crowd. Their plea however got 2Face excited that he disregarded compere’s directive to put his performance on hold for the Governor to speak. This created a scene of some sort as 2Face couldn’t resist the crowd’s urge for more performances. The situation was later brought under control when 2Face was offered a plastic chair to relax on stage, after he had been persuaded by the governor that the performance would continue after he had delivered his speech. Time was past 2am.

    As the crowd maintained some calmness, Governor Mimiko said his administration remains committed to making tourism drive the state’s economy, especially through medical and domestic tourism.

    The concert, which marked the close of the festival was attended by Governor Mimiko and his wife, Commissioner for Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, Ondo State Commissioner for Special Duties, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Femi Adekanmbi, Nollywood celebrities led by Jibola Dabo, Yemi Blaq, Bimbo Oshin, among others.

    2Face started his performance after an introduction by Ara and followed by the miming of Ebenezer Obey’s evergreen song, Baby mi jowo. That brief duet with Ara added extra flavour to the concert.  His hit songs African Queen and Rainbow were next as he took the crowd into memory lane.  Decked in a black bodysuit on a white T-shirt upon black pant, Tuface dazzled the crowd with his legendry displays. The jubilant crowd however overran the barricade manned by security officials, when 2Face performed his Let somebody loves you hit from his ascension album.

    Earlier, winners who emerged from the marathon and raffle draws, held at the Idanre Mountain Resorts were presented with prizes.

    Information Commissioner Mr. Kayode Akinmade disclosed that by next year, Ondo State representatives would compete in the mountain climbing competition noting that the seeds sown by Governor Mimiko in Idanre would blossom. He said the Golf Course in the state is ready and by February, it would host the Governor’s Golf tournament.

    Commissioner for Special Duties, Culture and Tourism Mr. Femi Adekanmbi said his dream as the new helmsman in the ministry is to improve Mare from its present level and turn tourism into income generating sector, stressing that ‘we must not depend on oil.’

    He said the sector would be private investors driven that will involve private partnership with stakeholders in the sector. “If it means reaching outside the state for investors, we will not hesitate to do so. Expect a new dawn. I am a goal getter and I will do that in the next one year and Mare will be taken to another level,” he said. Adekanmbi said the state would host its first Ondo Carnival next Easter.
