Family of sick patient attack medical doctor in Ondo, NARD kicks, demands justice

Tension erupted at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, Ondo State, over the weekend after a medical doctor was reportedly attacked by relatives of a patient, raising fresh concerns about the safety of health workers in public hospitals.

The victim, Dr. Adeniyi A, a registrar in the Department of Internal Medicine, was allegedly assaulted while attending to patients at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit.

Hospital sources told reporters that the attackers, believed to be family members of a surgical patient, confronted Dr. Adeniyi during treatment and physically manhandled him.

An anonymous staff member said the incident caused panic within the unit before hospital management intervened.

The assault has drawn widespread condemnation from medical professionals. The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) described the attack as “barbaric, unlawful, and a direct threat to the Nigerian healthcare system.”

The association, in a statement jointly signed by its President, Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, Secretary-General, Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim, highlighted a growing pattern of violence against healthcare workers nationwide.

NARD noted that the attack occurred inside a hospital—a facility intended to guarantee safety and preserve life—and blamed inadequate security measures for exposing doctors and staff to danger. The association warned that public aggression toward medical personnel is unlawful and must be addressed decisively.

The group demanded compensation for Dr. Adeniyi to cover both physical and psychological trauma, full payment of medical bills resulting from the incident, and an immediate review and strengthening of security arrangements at FMC Owo to protect staff and patients.

“We can no longer tolerate a situation where resident doctors are exposed to harm while rendering essential services to Nigerians. We vow that assaults on resident doctors will no longer be treated with silence or indifference.

“We demand full compensation for the pain, trauma, and suffering endured by our colleague as a result of this assault. Complete coverage of all medical expenses arising from the incident without delay.

“Immediate and comprehensive upscaling of security architecture around all entry points, clinical areas, and strategic posts within FMC Owo to prevent a recurrence,” the group said.

The association, however, called for the prompt arrest and prosecution of those responsible, warning that impunity would only embolden further attacks on health workers.

It added, “Prompt apprehension and diligent prosecution of all perpetrators involved in this criminal act, to serve as a deterrent to others.

“We can no longer tolerate a situation where resident doctors are exposed to harm while rendering essential services to Nigerians.”

Four suspected kidnappers arrested in Ondo community crackdown

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have taken custody of four suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate apprehended by residents of Ilu-Abo Community in Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

The suspects – Abenaguna Muhammad, Lanre, also known as ‘Lanre Tomato’, Ojo, and Pius – were alleged to have been terrorising residents of the community before their arrest.

According to the police, vigilant members of the community initially apprehended Muhammad and reportedly found criminal charms in his possession before handing him over to security operatives.

Confirming the development in a statement on Thursday in Akure, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, said the arrest followed proactive and credible intelligence.

He explained that during interrogation, Muhammad allegedly confessed to being a member of a kidnapping syndicate operating along the Ala/Ilu-Abo axis and linked to recent attacks and abductions in the area.

Abayomi added that the suspect subsequently assisted investigators, leading to the arrest of three other members of the gang.

The police spokesman noted that the incident prompted an immediate operational response, including reinforced tactical deployments, enhanced intelligence gathering, and on-the-spot assessment by the Commissioner of Police.

He said the suspects are currently in police custody while investigations continue to recover exhibits, uncover additional criminal links, and ensure their prosecution.

“This arrest followed intensive intelligence-driven operations launched by the Command after the violent incident of 25th January, 2026, during which armed assailants attacked residents at Liberty Avenue, Ilu-Abo, shot a victim, abducted another, and caused injuries to two.

“The incident prompted an immediate operational response, including reinforced tactical deployments, enhanced intelligence gathering, and on-the-spot assessment by the Commissioner of Police.

“These suspects are currently in Police custody, while the investigation is ongoing to recover exhibits, unravel further criminal links, and ensure diligent prosecution in the court of competent jurisdiction,” Abayomi said.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, commended the Ilu-Abo community for its vigilance and cooperation with security agencies, describing the action as a practical example of effective community partnership in crime prevention.

Lawal also praised the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for reforms aimed at strengthening intelligence-sharing and operational efficiency nationwide.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to community policing and urged residents to continue supporting security efforts through timely information sharing and collaboration with law enforcement agencies.

The police chief further stressed that inter-agency cooperation remains critical in tackling kidnapping and other organised crimes across the state.

The latest arrest came a week after angry residents of Ilu Abo community protested over the incessant cases of killings and abduction by suspected gunmen.

The residents, who blocked the major Akure/Owo/Benin road to draw attention to their plights, said that they had been traumatized by the criminal activities of armed men terrorising the community with little help from the security agencies.

They explained that they have been thrown into deep fear, chaos, and uncertainty following a violent security incident that continued to occur in the community.

A week before the protest, the gunmen had abducted no fewer than nine residents, including an expectant woman in the Eleyewo community, also in Akure North LGA.

The development forced the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, to voice its serious concerns over the incessant killings and abductions in the community, describing it as unacceptable

It called on governments, security agencies, and community leaders to rise to the challenges and find lasting solutions to the menace.

The group also sympathized with Oluabo of Ilu Abo, HRM, Oba Olu Falae, the people of Ilu-Abo, and the Ondo state government on the violent kidnapping cases while expressing concerns over acts of terrorism occurring in various parts of Yorubaland.

  • Ondo’s Smokin Hills to host  2026 Business Network Golf Tourney

Ondo’s Smokin Hills to host  2026 Business Network Golf Tourney

In a move that underscores golf’s rising status as a business networking tool, top professionals and entrepreneurs are set to gather at Smokin Hills Golf Resort, Ilara-Mokin, on February 21 for the 2026 Business Network Golf Tournament.

The one-day event, sponsored by Bode Adediji Partnership and Kontinental Developers Limited, promises to bring together business leaders, industry professionals, and emerging entrepreneurs from across Nigeria and beyond. Beyond competition, the tournament is designed as a platform for networking, relationship-building, and discussions on investment and enterprise in a relaxed, leisure-focused setting.

Convener of the tournament, Adediji, a respected estate surveyor and valuer, said the initiative is both a contribution to sport and a recognition of golf’s wider developmental significance. “This is our little way of contributing to the sporting community,” Adediji said. “There is a school of thought that links the growth of golf and its infrastructure with the overall socio-economic progress of a nation. In many ways, golf serves as an index of development.”

Adediji pointed to countries like Japan, China, South Korea, the United States, and Italy, where thriving golf cultures coexist with strong infrastructure and structured leisure systems that support business and professional growth. “Leisure and recreation management is an integral part of modern business culture worldwide,” he said. “Golf provides a space where ideas flow, partnerships are formed, and strategic conversations take place away from formal boardrooms.”

The choice of venue reinforces the tournament’s prestige. Developed by High Chief Michael Adeojo, Chairman of Elizade Motors, the 18-hole Smokin Hills Golf Resort is located about 20 minutes from Akure, Ondo State’s capital, in the university town of Ilara-Mokin.

It is currently the only golf facility in Ondo State and has rapidly become one of Nigeria’s most scenic and technically challenging courses even as golfers describe the layout as a perfect blend of aesthetics and strategy.

Mature trees line several fairways, bunkers guard key approach zones, and subtly contoured greens reward creativity and precision.

Yet despite its championship pedigree, the course remains accessible to golfers of varying skill levels, from beginners to seasoned players. “Even weekend golfers can enjoy the experience,” Adediji noted. “But more experienced players will appreciate the technical depth, requiring patience, creativity, and strategic thinking around the green.”

Organisers emphasised that the tournament is not only about sport. It is a deliberate effort to link leisure with professional development, using golf as a medium to encourage dialogue, collaboration, and investment. Attendees will have the opportunity to forge partnerships, exchange ideas, and expand their professional networks while enjoying the game. With its combination of scenic beauty, technical challenge, and business purpose, the 2026 Business Network Golf Tournament is set to be a landmark event. Organisers plan to make it an annual fixture, positioning Smokin Hills as a premier venue where sport, enterprise, and development intersect in Nigeria’s growing business landscape.

The delegation later proceeded to Irele Town, the headquarters of Irele Local Government Area, where party stakeholders and supporters also welcomed the team.

Addressing members, the Irele Coordinator, Mr Lebi Temidayo, commended the consistency of the group and pledged continuous engagement with party faithful at the ward level.

Director-General of BTO4PBAT27, Ogbeni Adesuyi Adojutelegan, urged members to remain united and politically active ahead of future elections.

He also encouraged supporters to formally register as members of the APC to strengthen the party’s grassroots structure.

According to him, the ongoing electronic registration exercise makes it necessary for members to actively participate in the process.

As part of efforts to support party activities, Adojutelegan announced donations of N1 million to the APC in Ese-Odo and N500,000 to the party in Irele to facilitate membership registration and other operations.

He described members of the group in both councils as critical pillars of support for the minister and the president, noting that their loyalty and engagement would be vital to the success of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Also speaking, the group’s Publicity Secretary, Folajimi Adewumi Gbenga, urged members to go beyond symbolic participation by holding regular ward meetings and completing their APC registration.

The ward tour attracted large crowds of party leaders and supporters in both local governments, with many expressing optimism about the APC’s chances in future elections.

Ondo warns contractors handling technical colleges’ projects, threatens contract termination

The Ondo state government has warned contractors handling the construction and rehabilitation of technical colleges across the state’s 18 local government areas to expedite work or risk contract termination.

The warning was issued on Thursday by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Technical and Vocational Education, Mr Tayo Oluyi, during a sensitisation meeting with contractors executing government projects in various parts of the state.

Mr Oluyi said the directive became necessary following his inspection tour of several government-owned technical colleges, where he assessed the level of progress on ongoing construction and rehabilitation works.

According to him, the meeting was also convened to review past efforts, interface with contractors, and identify measures that would ensure the timely completion of the projects.

He explained that the management of the Technical Education Board also presented records and updates on the projects, including bottlenecks affecting some contractors.

Mr Oluyi, who reaffirmed Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s commitment to technical and vocational education, described the skilled trades as the backbone of industrial development.

“Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa understands that skilled trade is the backbone of any industry. That is why he has provided the financial resources needed to ensure that students learn in a modern, safe, and industry-standard environment. He expects these projects to be delivered within record time,” he said.

Mr Oluyi stressed that the governor had made it clear that any contractor who failed to deliver as expected would be sanctioned, noting that no excuse would be acceptable since most of the necessary funds had already been disbursed.

“At the completion, no contractor will be owed a dime,” he added.

The governor’s aide, however, lauded the contractors who had completed their projects and those who had recorded significant progress, urging others with pending work to return to the site immediately.

He assured that the state government would work with host communities to ensure smooth project execution.

Earlier, the project supervisor, Architect Onibudo Gbenga, presented an update on the level of progress recorded so far, urging contractors to prioritise not only timely delivery but also quality workmanship for the benefit of the communities.

Remarking on behalf of the contractors, Mr Yemi Dara expressed appreciation to the state government for the engagement and support, particularly in addressing challenges previously faced by contractors.

He pledged the contractors’ full cooperation and commitment to delivering the projects as required.

  • Why Ondo will vote Tinubu in 2027, by ex-speaker

Why Ondo will vote Tinubu in 2027, by ex-speaker

Victor Olabimtan is former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly and Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors (RHA) in Ondo State. In this interview with Correspondent TOSIN TOPE in Akure, he speaks on the objectives of the RHA, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms, grassroots mobilisation ahead of 2027, and internal reforms within the APC.

Can you briefly highlight the core objectives of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors and how they align with President Tinubu’s national development agenda?

The Renewed Hope Ambassadors (RHA) is a child of necessity, created to bridge the obvious communication gap between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the intended beneficiaries of government policies, programmes, and projects.

You know, when falsehoods are allowed to circulate repeatedly without correction, they risk being accepted as truth. The RHA exists to straighten the narrative, present facts as they are, and ensure Nigerians understand the realities of governance under the Tinubu administration.

Our core objective is two fold: to disseminate accurate and honest information from the federal government to Nigerians and to collect structured feedback from the grassroots for onward transmission to relevant authorities. This two-way engagement ensures inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability.

The RHA is a nationwide initiative designed to educate Nigerians on the reforms and opportunities embedded in the Renewed Hope Agenda. Through town halls, market engagements, faith-based visits, roadshows, and stakeholders’ forums, ambassadors translate government initiatives into simple, relatable, and practical terms.

Beyond public enlightenment, the RHA also strengthens party outreach and mobilization by connecting APC structures from the national level down to states, local governments, wards, and units. This fosters unity, consistent messaging, and effective engagement between elected officials and their constituents.

In essence, the RHA serves as a functional governance interface – delivering credible information from government to citizens, while channeling grassroots feedback back to government.

What specific programmes of the RHA are currently being implemented in Ondo State, and what impact have they made so far?

The RHA is still at its formative stage nationwide. The national, zonal, and state ambassadors have been inaugurated, with the Southwest zonal leadership ably led by Distinguished Senator Dayo Adeyeye – a man whose track record speaks for itself.

In Ondo state, we are adopting a bottom-up approach by consulting widely to establish RHA structures at the local government, ward, and unit levels. This is deliberate, as no community or group must be left behind.

The response from the people has been overwhelming. The most significant impact so far is the renewed confidence among citizens that, for the first time in Nigeria’s democratic history, a practical feedback mechanism is being institutionalized to connect them directly with the federal government.

So, soon, the RHA will swing fully into action nationwide, spreading awareness and endearing government policies to their rightful beneficiaries across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria.

How would you assess President Tinubu’s performance so far, especially in areas likely to shape his re-election campaign?

Independent economic analyses have acknowledged the impact of President Tinubu’s reforms. A recent Quantus Economist report, analysed on Arise Television by Dr. Reuben Abati noted that the President’s policies helped stabilize an economy that was virtually on its knees when he assumed office.

Key reforms such as fuel subsidy removal, the elimination of dollar arbitrage, and foreign exchange market restructuring have repositioned the economy. The report identified 2024 as a turning point resulting from these bold policy decisions.

One of the administration’s biggest achievements is the naira-for-crude policy, introduced on October 1, 2024.

The policy allows local refineries to purchase crude oil in naira instead of dollars. It is projected to save Nigeria about $7.32 billion annually and reduce monthly forex spending on petroleum imports from $660 million to about $50 million.

This initiative strengthens the Naiira, boosts local refining capacity, reduces pressure on foreign exchange, encourages private investment-such as the Dangote Refinery-and enhances energy security. It is already easing the pains of subsidy removal and stabilizing the economy. These achievements, alongside improving food prices and fiscal stability, are strong pillars for President Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

President Tinubu has so far proved himself as a purposeful leader who is prepared for the job through his renewed hope agenda. The economy was not just in shambles when he took over; it was running on deficit with government at all levels struggling to pay salaries and meet other financial obligations.

All that are now in the past, and things are gradually getting better. The renewed hope agenda of the president is already yielding massive and visible results.

So, what strategies are being deployed to mobilize grassroots support ahead of the 2027 general election?

Let me tell you, President Tinubu has remained focused on implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda, allowing results to speak louder than rhetoric. Every well-meaning observer can see the visible positive results, except the naysayers.

In whatever endeavour you find yourself, the greatest disservice you can do to yourself is to allow your oppositions or detractors to shape your narrative. As aforementioned, we are not where we ought to be yet, but we are equally far better than where we were before.

The RHA is a key mobilization strategy and designed to ensure Nigerians understand these results and how they benefit from them.

Our work is made easier because the reforms are already yielding visible outcomes. As we often say, we may not yet be where we desire to be, but we are far better than where we were before.

How is the campaign now addressing criticisms surrounding economic reforms?

The RHA was specifically designed to engage Nigerians at the grassroots, explaining both the sacrifices and the gains of the reforms. Governance is complex, and meaningful progress requires tough but necessary decisions. PBAT didn’t mince words when he pleaded with Nigerians to join hands with him in his quest to revive the economy.

This administration adopted a proactive, long-term, and goal-oriented approach, unlike previous reactionary policies. Positive change always demands sacrifice, but the signs are clear that Nigeria is emerging from the woods.

For two years, we discussed our pains. Now, it is time to consolidate and celebrate our gains.

What achievements stand out as the strongest selling points for Tinubu’s re-election?

Without doubt, there are many achievements that can easily pass as the selling points of PBAT’s government.  The Naira-for-crude policy stands out as a masterstroke. It promotes domestic refining, conserves foreign exchange, stabilizes fuel prices, strengthens the naira, and positions Nigeria as a regional energy hub.

The initiative was predicted to save Nigeria $7.32 billion annually and reduce monthly forex expenditure on petroleum products from $660 million to $50 million. The policy was introduced on 1st of October, 2024, to allow local refineries to buy crude oil in naira, not dollars, to stabilize the currency, boost local refining, cut forex demand, and increase energy security by reducing reliance on imported refined products.

This policy enables domestic refining, using Naira for crude sourcing and generating refined products (like petrol) sold in naira, thereby strengthening the local economy, reducing dollar pressure, and making fuel cheaper for Nigerians.

The policy is gradually easing the pain inflicted by the removal of the fuel subsidy and also stabilizing the economy. The objectives of this policy are to encourage investment in Nigeria private refineries (like Dangote Refinery); reduce demand for dollars in the oil sector, ease pressure on the naira and boost confidence in the local currency; prevent dollars from leaving the country for crude purchases, keep value within the domestic economy; bring down the price of petrol at the pump and; make Nigeria more self-sufficient in refined products and position it as a regional supplier.

Now, the policy is already yielding visible results with long-term economic benefits as projected by PBAT. The purposeful leadership style of the president has also strengthened many state governments to embrace industrialization; a clear example is Ondo State. These are unique and undeniable achievements.

Read Also: APC chieftain asks Nigeriansto embrace peace, tolerance

Additionally, President Tinubu’s leadership has empowered states to pursue industrialization, with Ondo State being a clear example. These are concrete, measurable achievements that cannot be wished away.

How prepared is the Ondo State RHA team for voter engagement and election-day mobilization?

The RHA is an offshoot of the APC that was created as part of the mobilization strategies to re-orientate Nigerians and let them know that we cannot go back to the era where people sleep in petrol stations just to buy fuel, where state governments have to reduce weekly workdays to three because salary couldn’t be paid or where higher institutions of learning were locked down for months due to incessant strike actions.

So, the Ondo State RHA is ready, even though we are still completing our formation process. Once the local government, ward, and unit structures are inaugurated, operations will fully commence.

Under the leadership of our governor, His Excellency Lucky Aiyedatiwa-who also serves as the Ondo State Chairman of RHA – we are confident of building a formidable and efficient structure.

There are reports of internal disagreements within the APC, How accurate are these claims?

Disagreements are natural in any political organization. The APC’s guiding principle is simple: you may disagree, but do not be disagreeable. There is no system that can accommodate or take care of all interests at a go. But as much as possible those agitations will be addressed one after the other. You will agree with me that despite the seeming internal disagreements, the APC has a way of resolving it crisis.

There are different layers of interventions in crisis management within the APC before the leader will step-in. Once the leader steps in the matter, it gets resolved immediately. What many describe as internal crises are largely agitations for recognition. The APC has well-established conflict-resolution mechanisms, and once leadership intervenes, issues are promptly resolved. This is why the party continues to grow stronger.

Are there plans for internal reforms to strengthen party discipline and cohesion?

Yes. The APC is currently undergoing internal reforms. Recently, President Tinubu inaugurated a Committee on Strategy, Conflict Resolution and Mobilization, chaired by Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, with Dr. Muiz Banire as Secretary.

The committee is tasked with developing inclusive, sustainable strategies ahead of 2027. Online membership registration is ongoing, and preparations for party congresses are underway.

The APC is evolving-not just as the largest party in Nigeria, but as the most organized. These reforms reaffirm the President’s commitment to ensuring that democracy works and does not fail.

Ondo vows crackdown on land grabbers

The Ondo State Government has vowed to clamp down on “land grabbers” across the state, issuing a stern warning for perpetrators to desist from illegal activities or face the full wrath of the law.

The Chairman of the State Anti-Land Grabbing Taskforce, Kayode Ajulo, SAN, gave the warning on Saturday during a meeting of the task force in Akure, the state capital.

The renewed warning comes amid rising cases of land grabbing and land ownership disputes in parts of Ondo State, involving communities, families and traditional institutions.

Ajulo, who also serves as the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, said 2026 would be a decisive and difficult year for land grabbers operating in the sunshine state.

He warned that anyone found violating the Ondo State Properties Protection and Its Documentation Law, 2024 would be dealt with decisively, stressing that the successes recorded in 2025 were only the beginning.

According to him, enough time had been given for offenders to desist from unlawful acts.

“The grace period expired with 2025. Any land grabber operating in Ondo State should know that this year will be different. Recall that I earlier stated that we have compiled the names of individuals our investigations have confirmed to be deeply involved in land grabbing, turning themselves into veterans of illegality.

“In 2026, we are going all out against them, and the law will be enforced strictly without compromise,” Ajulo said.

The Attorney-General further warned that the task force would no longer tolerate illegal land sales, multiple sales of land by owning families, intimidation of lawful landowners, or any form of forceful land acquisition.

He added that offenders would be arrested, prosecuted, and made to face the full consequences of their actions.

Ajulo also commended Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa for addressing long-standing fears associated with land-related fraud through the enactment of the Ondo State Properties Protection and Its Documentation Law, 2024.

He noted that the law criminalises land grabbing and related offences, noting that the governor’s continued support, including the provision of necessary operational resources, had strengthened the effectiveness of the task force.

Last week, residents of several communities in Idanre Local Government Area protested alleged encroachment and sales of their ancestral lands by the Deji of Akure Kingdom, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi.

The protesters, comprising mainly farmers and community leaders, accused the monarch of trespassing and selling lands allegedly located outside the traditional jurisdiction of the Akure Kingdom.

They claimed the alleged encroachment had disrupted farming activities, threatened livelihoods and heightened tension and security concerns in the affected communities.

However, Oba Aladelusi denied the allegations, describing them as false, misleading and an attempt at blackmail.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Michael Adeyeye, the monarch insisted that the disputed land is an integral part of Akure Kingdom and not within Idanre territory.

According to him, the matter had already been conclusively settled by the Supreme Court, which clearly outlined the boundaries and lands belonging to Akure Kingdom, including Aponmu and Olokuta.

Aiyedatiwa approves N50m loan interest-free for widows of fallen heroes in Ondo

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has approved the sum of N50 million for no fewer than 120 widows and dependents of fallen heroes in the state.

Aiyedatiwa gave the approval on Thursday during the grand finale of the 2026 Armed Forces and Remembrance Day celebration held at the Government Cenotaph, Alagbaka, Akure.

The governor said the fund, which would be disbursed immediately, is an interest-free microcredit loan designed to empower widows of fallen heroes economically.

He explained that the loan per beneficiary had been increased from the initial N200,000 to between N450,000 and N500,000, depending on business needs.

Aiyedatiwa noted that the zero-interest loan scheme, which has become a permanent feature of the annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day in the state, would be sustained irrespective of prevailing economic challenges.

According to him, the initiative is aimed at supporting beneficiaries’ businesses and enabling them to cater adequately for their families.

The governor emphasised that the nationwide Armed Forces Remembrance celebration represented the highest form of respect for fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price in the defence of the nation, while also honouring living veterans and serving military personnel committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

He stressed that the ceremony was not merely about remembrance but also about honour and empowerment, particularly for widows of fallen heroes whose resilience continues to inspire society.

Aiyedatiwa said the state government under his administration recognised the challenges faced by the widows and remained committed to supporting their welfare through sustained resources, opportunities, and recognition.

The governor disclosed that the Emblem Appeal Fund, launched earlier, had so far attracted N5 million, in addition to his personal donation of one month’s salary, alongside contributions from individuals and corporate organisations.

He commended all relevant stakeholders, both military and civilian, for their collaboration in ensuring the success of the 2026 celebration.

Aiyedatiwa particularly lauded the security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps, for their significant roles in safeguarding lives and property in the state.

He noted that the state had been recognised as one of Nigeria’s most peaceful and safest states, assuring that his administration would continue to support security agencies within available resources.

Prosecution witness identifies two defendants as ‘attackers’ of Owo church

‘How I escaped with a damaged leg,’ another witness tells the court

The second prosecution witness in the trial of five men accused of being behind the June 5, 2022, attack on a church in Owo, Ondo State, on Monday identified two of the defendants as those who took part in the attack.

The witness, who said he is a member of the church and was present on that day, gave details of how the attack took place and the extent of damage recorded both to worshipers and the church building.

The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza (25 years), Al Qasim Idris 20 years), Jamiu Abdulmalik (26 years), Abdulhaleem Idris (25 years), and Momoh Otuho Abubakar (47 years) were involved in the attack at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Owo.

Led in evidence by prosecuting lawyer, Adedayo Adedipe (SAN), the second prosecution witness (PW2), whose identity was protected, identified Qasim Idris (second defendant) and Abdulhaleem Idris (fourth defendant) as those he saw among the attackers.

The witness, who was labelled SSB, said the attack took place on Sunday when the church was about to round off the mass held in commemoration of the Feast of Pentecost.

He said, “We were having our normal mass in the church, just about the time the church was closing, we heard a gunshot outside the church compound. So, we were wondering what was happening.

“We heard another gunshot at the gate, then there was pandemonium in the church. Everybody was running helter skelter and asking what was happening.

“Then we started hearing sporadic shooting inside the church compound. Then, one of the MOD (Men of Order and Defence) of the church ran towards the church and shouted, ‘Lock the door, lock the door.’ Then, those by the door tried to lock the door.

“Then, we heard some sound at the door. And then, we started hearing footsteps of people running towards the other entrance of the church. They were shooting as well.

“In a matter of seconds, I saw one man holding a gun. He looked at the church, up and down, then he used his hand to beckon someone behind him to come forward,” the witness said.

When asked if he could recognise the man who was holding a gun and beckoning on another of the attackers to come forward, the witness said he could.

When asked to tell the court if the person was among the defendants, the witness pointed at the fifth defendant (Momoh Otuho Abubakar), who shouted in protest.

At that point, Adedipe asked Abubakar, who was wearing a nose mask, to remove it, following which the judge, Justice Emeka Nwite ordered the defendant to move closer to the defendants in the dock so that he could see them properly.

When he moved closer to the defendants, the witness then changed his mind and said the actual person with the gun and who was beckoning another person to come was the second defendant (Al Qasim Idris).

Defence lawyer, Abdullahi Mohammad, objected to the sudden change of mind by the witness, arguing, among others, that having earlier claimed that the fifth defendant was the person he saw, he could no longer change his mind and pick another person since he had not told the court that he has problem with his sight.

Although Adedipe responded by making counterarguments, Justice Nwite overruled Mohammad’s objection and held that what the defence lawyer should concentrate on was how to discredit the witness during cross-examination.

When the witness resumed his testimony, he gave further details of how the attack went and identified the fourth defendant (Abdulhaleem Idris) as one of the attackers.

The witness said, “At that time, another man emerged with a gun and started shooting at the choir gallery, while the first person, who beckoned to the second person started shooting at the people at the lector’s seat.

“So, as they were doing that, later we heard a sound of explosive, there was a second explosive again, and the third one. At that time, when I heard the third explosive, I became very afraid and fell on my face to the ground. Then, I heard the fourth explosive.

“Then, I raised up my eyes, I now saw three people. The third one was black in complexion and was putting a bag across his shoulder.

He now examined the church by looking at us. And, hoping that everybody has been killed, he now made a sign as if to say, let us go. From then, we did not hear any gunshot again,” the witness said.

When asked by Adedipe if he could recognise any of the two attackers beside the second defendant, the witness said yes.

He again moved closer to the defendants in the dock and said, “The person who threw the explosives, I cannot identify. But, the person who was beckoned at and the one who carried the bag when they were about to go, I can identify them.”

He then identified the fourth defendant (Abdulhaleem Idris) as the one who carried the bag while the attackers were about to leave the church premises after the attack.

The witness, however, said he could not identify the person who joined the second defendant in the shooting among the defendants.

He said after the attackers left the church premises, himself and other church members waited for some minutes, after which he raised his head when he could no longer hear any gunshot.

The witness added, “I now raised up my head again and saw two people standing up and trying to run away from the church. The two people who were trying to run away from the church were members of the church.”

He said when he stood up, he jumped through the window by his side, adding that when he landed outside, he saw the dead body of a woman beside a car and another dead body of a man, beside the fence, near the Oba’s palace.

When asked the number of those killed in the attack, the witness said it was more than 40, while many others were injured.

He said, “Apart from the people who died, there were many other casualties. By the time I came back from the hospital, in the afternoon of that day, the whole hospital was filled with casualties of the attack, among whom were people whose legs were amputated.

“After the day of the incident, I visited the church on the second day. The church was badly damaged as a result of the explosions and gunshots. And the whole church was filled with blood everywhere.”

The witness said he was invited by the DSS to its Akure office in Ondo State during an investigation into the incident where he made a statement, a copy of which he identified when Adedipe showed it to him.

The court later admitted it in evidence.

Under cross-examination by Muhammad, the witness said the first prosecution witness in the case was a priest of the church who officiated on the day of the attack.

The witness, who said he normally sits around the second row in the church, told the court that out of the four doors in the church building, only the main one was locked. He said the person who first came in with a gun came in from the door beside the choir stand.

The third prosecution witness, a female, who was labelled ‘SSC,’ with her actual identity shielded by the court, gave details of how she escaped with injuries to her left leg.

The witness,  who said she was also in church during the attack, said she was confused and did not immediately know what to do when she heard the first round of gunshots.

Led in evidence by Adedipe, the witness said: “I was confused and did not know what was happening until an old woman sitting beside me was killed.

“I was still confused and seated down when the choir president came from the choir gallery and grab me up and we ran towards the alter. At the alter, I met brother Chinedu Ojukwu, who help me to lie down on the floor.

“And, we were all lying down when the unknown gunmen climbed to the alter and asked us, ‘do you know why we are doing this?’ I raised up my head and looked at him. I did not see him because of the fear in me. But, he thought I saw him and he said, ‘you that are looking at me, you will die immediately.’ And he dropped the dynamite beside my head and he left.

“Brother Chinedu was the one who asked me to shift, and while sighting, I never knew that my left leg was not yet removed from the dynamite, and the dynamite exploded, and my left leg was damaged with wounds,” she said.

When asked if she had any evidence to show the court that her left leg was damaged, she walked off the witness box and showed the court her left leg, which was damaged as a result of the explosive device that she said was dropped by one of the attackers beside her inside the church hall.

The witness added, “While I was being taken to the hospital, he met my younger cousin’s brother dead. He was just two years old. He was shot in the back of his head

“Thereafter, I was rushed to the hospital by the Reverend Father, brother Chinedu, and Chucks. When I got to the hospital, I met our CYON President, and I asked about my mother and my siblings from him, and he said they are fine.

“I was still anxious to see my mother, and some minutes later, my mother arrived at the hospital. She could not recognise me because of the injury, and the dust from the dynamite made me dark.

“She could only recognise me with my clothes. She finally met me and asked her colleagues to come and assist me. And my father bought everything needed for the treatment that day,” the witness said.

On what the medical personnel who attended to her did to keep the wounds on her leg at the state it currently is, the witness said the affected leg was operated on four times. She said she was also skin grafted to cover the open wounds, adding that presently, there is an iron inside the leg.

The witness, who said she is still on medication, told the court that she made a statement on May 26, 2024, when she was invited to the DSS office in Akure.

She said 41 people died instantly from the attack, while about 100 others were injured.

Under cross-examination by Mohammad, the witness said she came about the number of those killed in the attack from the figure printed on an obituary magazine that was printed on the day of their burial, which stated that 41 people died.

Further hearing in the case continues on January 14 at 12noon.
