“What really happened is that it is a lone accident; 13 passengers with the driver, making 14. The tyre burst on speed, the vehicle somersaulted and then fell on its side.  A woman with cuts on her head died. Maybe when she was struggling to escape, the door might have cut her.

“The accident was fatal and a lot of people were seriously injured. Some suffered upper part of the body injuries; we have those with head injury while others were injured on their legs. There were 10 casualties. Apart from the woman that died, seven of the injured were taken to the Emergency Centre at Toll Gate by LASAMBUS. Family members of two others came to take them away after they were contacted on phone. The driver, who I think sustained minor injury, was whisked away by the policemen from the Adekunle Police Station,” a LASTMA official said.

The accident caused a traffic snarl, which took LASTMA and other security agencies time to clear.

  • One dead in Ebonyi road accident

One dead in Ebonyi road accident

One person died yesterday in a road accident involving a Toyota Camry and a Mercedes Benz tipper on the Abakaliki/Enugu Expressway at 135, Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

The ash-colour Toyota Camry, with registration number, SSE 200 AX, was said to be heading to Enugu State.

The Mercedes Benz tipper, with registration number GDD 814 XA, had a collision with the Toyota, killing its driver.

An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ebonyi State Command, who spoke in confidence, told The Nation that the driver of the Camry died on the spot while the two occupants of the Mercedes Benz tipper were unhurt

He said the accident, which occurred about 10am, was caused by excessive speeding and dangerous driving.

The FRSC official added that they were unable to control the vehicles because of their speed.

The source said: “From our investigation, the two vehicles, because of the condition of the road, were on a high speed. The driver of the tipper said he loaded stones at the Umuahara stone crushing site in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, and was heading to Enugu.

“There were conflicting stories because an eyewitness told us that the driver of the Camry was also heading to Enugu. So, if the two were heading to Enugu, how did they have a head-on collision? We suspect that both drivers were on a very high speed and collided.

“By the time our men got to the scene of the accident, we observed that the driver of the Camry had died on the spot while the driver and conductor of the tipper did not sustain any injury.”

The FRSC official also said the body of the deceased was immediately deposited at the mortuary of the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki while the driver and his conductor were handed over to the police.

He said: “Drivers should endeavour to check their tyres because expired tyres can cause accidents and endanger the lives of passengers. The command would soon begin to educate motorists as we enter ‘ember’ months’ rush.

“The sensitisation would enable us to educate drivers on the dangers of using expired tires, but most of them would never adhere to instructions.”

An eyewitness, Mr. Celestine Odoh, regretted the death of the passenger.

He said several accidents had occurred in the area because of dangerous overtaking.

Odoh urged the FRSC to begin a 24-hour patrol of the road and impound any vehicle that is not road-worthy.

He said: “The road is very smooth because it was reconstruction by the Federal Government. The ‘ember-months’ rush has made many drivers, whose vehicles are too bad to be on the road, to force themselves on the road, thereby endangering the lives of innocent commuters.

“It is also unfortunate that some FRSC officials have become so familiar and friendly with some drivers that they don’t even bother to check their vehicles. They stop and exchange pleasantries with drivers and allow most of them to go. That is not the aim of being on the road.”
