The driver was mercilessly beaten and he was stripped naked. He kept shouting that he was not the one that fired shots but just a driver.

“The mob kept beating him and he tried to escape, running back naked to the field where the festival was taking place. The mob still beat him till he fell on the stage before the dignitaries, where he was rescued by the policemen. In the melee, everybody scampered for safety.”

  • One injured in NSCDC, Task Force clash

One person has been injured in a clash between officials of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the National Task Force in Asaba, Delta State.

The National Task Force was set up by the Federal Government to combat illegal importation of goods, small arms, ammunition, light weapons as well as monitoring of oil pipeline vandalisation.

It was gathered that trouble started when operatives of the Task Force were escorting an impounded truck loaded with 22,000 litres of petroleum products and three suspects to its station.

The operatives had earlier paraded the suspects.

It was gathered that the operatives allegedly clashed with officials of the NSCDC at the popular Koka junction on the Benin-Onitsha expressway.

But the Secretary of the Task Force, Paul Robertson, said there was no clash between his men and NSCDC officials. He alleged that the Task Force operatives were ambushed by NSCDC officials.

His words: “At about 8pm, we decided to move the suspects to our unit station beside Oshimili South Local Government Secretariat.

“On getting to Koka Junction, we were ambushed by NSCDC operatives. They came armed and started attacking our men with guns, knives and other weapons.

“I had to restrain my men from confronting them because we don’t want any casualty.

“Although we were under strict instruction from our Director-General, Dr. Osita Okereke, not to release the truck and the suspect to anybody, the NSCDC reinforced and overpowered our men and took away the truck and the suspects to an unknown destination.”

A NSCDC official said he was not aware that there was a clash between the two groups. He said it was only the NSCDC that was empowered by law to prosecute any suspected pipeline vandal.
