  • One killed, nurse kidnapped in Ekiti

There is uneasy calm at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti, Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State, following the killing of a yet-to-be identified indigene and the kidnap of a theatre nurse.

Some youths attacked the hospital complex on Wednesday, demanding more employment slots for indigenes.

They pelted the traditional ruler, Oba Ayorinde Ilori Faboro, with sachets of water.

Addressing a briefing yesterday, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Majekodunmi Ayodele, called on the police and the military to assist in protecting the workers “at this critical period”.

Ayodele identified the kidnapped nurse as Mrs. Margaret Aladenika, who was seized on Sunday while  in a car with her husband.

The mother of three is said to be in her early 40s. The hospital chief said no contact has been established with Mrs. Aladenika and her captors.

According to him, the gunmen reportedly killed the third occupant of the car.

Speaking on the invasion, Dr. Ayodele revealed that the youth, led by Kester Layokun, who claimed to be chairman of Ido Youth Vanguard, stormed the hospital at 7am armed with charms, weapons and kegs of petrol.

The CMD claimed that the violence was masterminded by a House of Assembly member-elect.

He added that the irate youths locked the gates leading to the hospital and barricaded the main road leading to the complex.

Dr. Ayodele disclosed that the youth demanded letters of employment for at least 100 graduates of the community.

He said the hospital has filled the employment quota given to the community.

The CMD said he contacted the Ido Divisional Police Officer, Okechukwu Ogbonna, who mobilised policemen to the scene but they were unable to tame the youth.

The CMD explained that the hospital is not a local government or state institution but a federal institution which must respect the provisions of the Federal Character Commission (FCC) Law on the employment of other Nigerians in its catchment areas of Ondo, Kwara, Kogi and Osun.

The explosive was said to have been planted near a place under the FESTAC-Mile 2 Bridge, which he used as office.

Bystanders ran helter-skelter when the explosive went off at noon.

Oladele died on the spot; the policeman was said to have lost his legs and one eye.

After settling down in his usual position, the late Oladele was said to have sent a loyalist simply identified as Dogo to buy him a local gin which he shared with his police friend.

Moments after the policeman made to leave, there was a loud deafening explosion, which dismembered Oladele and injured the policeman.

Sources told The Nation that the late Oladele had been chairman of the sand dealers association for over 10 years. His long reign, they said, witnessed frequently leadership tussles.

Dogo, who was still in shock, described the deceased as “a kind hearted father of five children, with two wives.”

At the time of this report, the scene had been cordoned off by armed mobile policemen. Oladele’s body has been deposited at the mortuary. Officials of Lagos state Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were on the scene.
