  • Kogi safe under Bello, Onoja, says chieftain

The Director-General of Lokoja Local Government Area (LGA) for Kogi State All Progressives Congress, APC Governorship Campaign Council, Fancy Jimoh Tiamiyu, has said that Governor Yahaya Bello and Chief Edward Onoja are the perfect combination that will transform and lift the state to greater heights.

Tiamiyu stated this in a statement to congratulate Onoja on his inauguration as the new Deputy Governor of Kogi State, following the impeachment of Elder Simon Achuba by members of the State Assembly.

Bello is the candidate of APC in the November 16 election, while Onoja is his running mate.

“The Lokoja All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Organisation joins all members of our great party and the entire people of Kogi State to felicitate with Chief Edward Onoja, the running mate to Governor Yahaya Bello, on his inauguration as the number-two citizen of the state. No doubt, this development is a sign of good things to come for Kogi, as the duo of Onoja and Bello make a perfect match for the overall development of our dear state. I dare say that Kogi is completely safe with Bello and Onoja in the saddle.” Tiamiyu averred.

He added: “Only an unmitigated loyal party man like Onoja would be able to productively and effectively work with Bello to consolidate on the stupendous achievements the governor has recorded since he came on board in 2016. There is no way meaningful progress can be made in a state if a deputy governor is not on the same page with his boss, the governor who is the Chief Executive Officer of the state. We don’t need any cog in the wheel of progress, in the determined effort of our amiable governor to transform and reposition the state for greatness. Kogites should come out en masse to vote for these two refined gentlemen, who have evidently demonstrated that they genuinely have the interest of Kogi at heart and would leave no stone unturned to make it better for all of us as they jointly pilot the affairs of the state.”

On the alleged illegality of Achuba’s impeachment, Tiamiyu said: “I don’t have much to say about that. All I know is that the Assembly members acted within the power granted them by the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Therefore, only a competent court of law can decide whether the action of the lawmakers was right or wrong. Until a court rules otherwise, I think that the decision stands and should be respected by all. That is what I feel.”

  • Buhari greets Atta, Onoja on birthdays

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Ambassador Abdullahi Ibrahim Atta on his 90th birthday anniversary.

He also felicitated with former Plateau and Katsina states governor Maj. Gen. Lawrence Onoja, who turns 70 today.

The President, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and publicity Garba Shehu, joined family, friends and well-wishers in thanking the Almighty God for his continued benevolence, strength and never-failing care to Atta in the past decades of a remarkable life of service and dedication to humanity.

He saluted Ambassador Atta’s service to the nation during his career in the foreign and public service, where he distinguished himself, with courage, in the work of reconciliation, conflict prevention, justice and peace around the world.

As family, friends, former colleagues and well-wishers gather to celebrate the nonagenarian’s lifetime and achievements, the President reminded them, the young and old alike, of their responsibility to give the nation hope for the future.

Buhari prayed that Ambassador Atta will enjoy more years of health and continue to be an inspiration to the upcoming generation on discipline, hard work and patriotism.

In another statement by his Media Adviser Debo Adesina,  the President sent warm greetings to the family, friends and former professional colleagues of Onoja on his birthday, recognising the many years of hard work and sacrifice to the nation as he served in strategic positions in the army and governor of two states.

He extolled Onoja’s sense of patriotism and relentless effort in contributing to the growth of the nation by accepting to serve on the board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and the National Institute of Sports, and consistently remaining active in the political sphere.

At he turns 70, Buhari believed Onoja’s keen appetite for knowledge, which saw him earning a doctorate in International Law and Diplomacy, and the wisdom that comes with age, will be further translated into serving the country he loves so much.

The President prayed that the almighty God will bless Onoja with longer life and strength to keep contributing to the growth of the nation.

  • Gbemi Saraki, Osunbor, Onoja, others join APC

THE wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continued yesterday with more prominent members of the party joining the All Progressives Congress (APC), along with thousands of their supporters.

Leading the group was a former governorship aspirant of the PDP in Kwara State, Senator Gbemisola Saraki, who announced her decision in Ilorin.

The party’s youth leader, Chief Segun Olawoyin, also joined the APC at a colourful ceremony in Offa Local Government Area.

Saraki said she left the PDP because of animosity and personal humiliation she suffered because of her identity as a Saraki offspring.

Also yesterday, the Vice President-elect, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, received over 5,000 defectors in Southern Kaduna area.  Receiving the new members, Osinbajo flayed the PDP for  harming the Nigerian nation, using religion and playing divisive politics.

The vice president-elect told the  leadership of churches in Southern Kaduna Senatorial District that  only righteousness would redeem Nigeria and not manipulation of religion for political power.

According to him, if Nigerians didn’t stand up to kill corruption, the menace would kill the country and collapse its weak institutions.

Osinbajo: “The PDP has done more harm for Nigeria using religion and playing the religious card to just consolidate power. It is dangerous and more deadly for this nation. I am here to say that only righteousness exalts a nation. The people of Southern Kaduna must rise up  to ensure that manipulators of religion are defeated.

“What Nigerians need is nothing but a government that will make necessary sacrifice for peace and development of the country.”

The state APC governorship candidate, Malam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, said: “I am pleased with the people of Southern Kaduna because we did well during the presidential election. The results clearly shows that PDP is being wiped out of Southern Kaduna and the entire state.

”Before, they used to write results. But this time around, the people insisted for change. We got one House of Representatives seat, it was almost three but for some deliberate diversion. And we will go to court.”

Prominent among the defectors are Maj-Gen. S.B.S. Biliyock (rtd); a former member of House of Representatives, Ruth Jummai Ango; former Commissioner and Attorney General Zakari A. Sogfa; and 114 immediate past councillors from eight local government areas.

From Niger State, former Secretary to the State Government Adams Erena also pulled out with 5,000 critical stakeholders in the PDP to the APC.

The new APC members include a member of the state House of Assembly, former commissioners, local government chairmen and former PDP grassroots leaders. They were received at a mega rally in Minna, the state capital.

The state Deputy Governor, Ahmed Musa Ibeto, who dumped the PDP in January, received the defectors and urged them to work for the success of the party in the governorship and state House of Assembly elections on Saturday.

In Edo State, a former governor, Prof. Osarhiemen Osunbor, announced his defection to the APC.

Osunbor, who was governor from May 2007 to November 2008, declared for APC with his supporters at Iruekpen, Esan West Local Government Area.

The defection came a few hours after a former Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General Idada Ikponmwen also defected to the APC.

Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who received the former governor and others, attributed the defection to God’s will and the performance of the party..

He said: “ I will be working with a respected professor of Law like you and many of your supporters. We thank God for what he has used us to achieve. I appeal to our people to vote for our APC House of Assembly candidates because they will help me to develop the state rapidly. And with the APC government at the top, the sky is our limit.”

In Benue State, former Katsina State Military Administrator Gen. Lawrence Onoja; a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship aspirant, Dr. Mathias Oyigeya, and other chieftains were yesterday received into the APC.

The reception took place at the playground of Jesus College, Otukpo in Benue South.

Chief Agbo Oga, former Chief of Staff to Senate President David Mark, Chief Mike Iduma, and Major Lawrence Ugbo (rtd), former PDP state chairmen and Mr. Peter Ochijele, a former member of the Benue State Executive Council were also received into APC.

Others were Chief John Ochoga, former Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Mr. Mike Inalegwu and Mrs. Theresa Ikwue, former Agatu and Okpokwu chairmen, as well as Chief Inalegwu Ode, former Chief Press Secretary to the governor.

General Onoja explained that the President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, was his senior at a military institution in the United Kingdom and that having also served as Military Administrator of his home Katsina State, military tradition required that he lined up behind him.

He said he also decided to end what he described as his political sabbatical to collaborate with other progressives to emancipate people of Benue South Senatorial District.

He assured that incoming APC government would not disappoint Nigerians and urged the people to deliver block votes to the APC in Saturday’s governorship and state assembly elections.

Iduma stated that they took the decision to deepen democracy, join the battle against corruption and to support the election of Dr. Samuel Ortom and his running mate, Mr. Benson Abounu.

APC leader in Benue State Senator George Akume said they took the right decision by leaving “a sinking ship”.

Senator Akume was represented by his wife, Chief Regina Akume.

In Warri, Itsekiri youth leader and former PDP mobiliser Chief Ayiri Emami confirmed his move from the PDP to the APC.

Emami, a Warri palace chief and an ally of Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, said he was leaving the PDP in the interest of the  Itsekiri nation, adding that he would be working to deliver the Emerhor candidature in the gubernatorial election.

Emami said: “I am urging my Ijaw brothers to abandon this PDP ship because it is sinking in Delta State due to the overbearing attitude of one man. Their interest in the PDP is not protected. Instead, it is the interest of one individual, who sees his family and personality as greater than the others.”

  • Group welcomes Onoja’s return to PDP

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ideakpa ward of Ohimimi Local government area in Benue State has stated that it is not opposed to the planned return of the General Lawrence Onoja to the party.

A group known as Stake Holders of PDP in Ideakpa ward, where the former general hails from, said it is excited that Onoja is returning to the party.

In a statement by its leader, Rt. Hon Okla Boniface, the group described those opposed toOnoja’sretutn as enemies of the people.

It said: “The PDP as it is presently constituted now has been in the hands of locust and we are happy that the return of General Onoja into the party will bring sanity in Ideakpa ward,Ohimini local government and by extension the entire Benue south senatorial zone.”

The group claimed thatOnoja won the 2011 senatorial election as shown by forensic experts from London with 35,000 valid votes as against David Mark’s 17,000.

This, it said, is a clear demonstration ofOnoja’s acceptance by the people of Benue south.

  • 2015: Onoja, Presidency plot to checkmate Mark

2015: Onoja, Presidency plot to checkmate Mark

The expected move by a chieftain of the defunct Arewa Consultative Forum  (ACF), Maj. Gen. Lawrence Onoja, to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) if not well handled, could rupture the current relative peace in Benue State politics, reports Remi Adelowo

Former Military Governor of Plateau State, Lawrence Onoja, a retired two-star general of the Nigerian Army has been in the news lately.

After two years of being in a political hiatus of sorts, Onoja, a former Principal General Staff Officer (PGSO) during the regime of the late General Sani Abacha, suddenly reappeared from the blues to drum up support for the speculated second term ambition of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Prior to the 2011 general elections, Onoja was constantly in the news. He had contested the Benue South senatorial election on the platform of the defunt ACN against the incumbent senator, who is also the Senate President, David Mark of the PDP.

It was a bitter electoral contest that nearly threatened the peace of Benue State.

The first battle between the two generals was fought in the primaries of the PDP to pick the senatorial candidate for Benue South. Mark secured 1,680 votes to Onoja’s 317 votes.

Not satisfied, Onoja left PDP for ACN where he was handed an automatic ticket to challenge Mark at the general election.

The ‘war’ got so messy that on a particular day after the end of a campaign rally, Onoja escaped death by whiskers after some unidentified political thugs allegedly shot at the Toyota SUV conveying him, shattering the glasses in the process. Though he was alive to tell the story, Onoja sustained injuries on his right hand and was subsequently hospitalised.

It was a baptism of sorts for Onoja in the politics of his home state. Not unexpectedly, Onoja pointed accusing fingers at Mark as the alleged mastermind of the attack on him. The spate of violence in the state during this period culminated in the invitation of prominent politicians in the state by the State Security Service (SSS).

The anti-climax of sort was Mark’s victory at the general elections defeating Onoja by 149,923 votes to 79,433 votes.

Onoja cried foul and challenged the election result up to the Appeal Court, which finally affirmed Mark’s victory.

With his fate finally sealed by the apex court, Onoja recoiled into his shell, perhaps to wait for another opportunity to actualise his political ambition.

Some weeks ago, Onoja, who is also the Chairman of the Strategic Mobilisation Committee of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), granted media interviews where he declared the support of the Middle Belt region to the alleged second term ambition of the president.

In a statement that clearly contradicts the position of the ACF, which has been at the forefront of the return of the presidency to the North, Onoja was quoted as saying, “Middle Belt of today is different from the Middle Belt of the 60s when we were categorised as part of the core North.”

Onoja, who is also a member of a political pressure group, Congress for Equality and Change, added that Jonathan was constitutionally qualified to run for a second term in office if he so wishes.

According to him, the Middle Belt region would back the president for a second term in office.

His words: “There could be anger in certain parts of the North. But there is no anger against Jonathan in my own Middle-Belt part of the North. We support Jonathan for his second term. Every group has the fundamental right to agitate for power.

“The groups that are talking, the Northern Elders, Arewa, are not political parties. They are socio-political cum cultural associations. So, they probably cannot install a president. At best, they are talking of supporting a candidate from the North. You don’t blame me for saying that my own people support Jonathan.”

Speaking further, Onoja, an Idoma, said his people were not regarded as core northerners even by the so-called North.

He voiced his conviction thus, “Assuming the power comes to the North today, would you tell them to concede power to the Idoma people where I come from? This is because I am a minority in the North and Jonathan is a minority from the South-South.”

The retired general added, “I want to say categorically that it is not yet time for power to shift to the North. Mr. President has not done his second term. All the other presidents were given opportunity to do their second terms and Mr. President, by virtue of the fact that he is a minority like me, it would be unfair and an injustice to stop him from doing his second term. If he finishes his second term in 2019, then other areas or blocks can now begin to agitate for power shift.”

These were, no doubt, sweet music in the ears of the power brokers in the Presidency.

Speculations that Onoja may be on his way back to PDP further heightened when he was part of the delegation of the Middle Belt Elders Forum (MBEF), led by a former Senate President in the Third Republic, Ameh Ebute, on a recent visit to the president. During the visit, the support of the Middle Belt to Jonathan was further reiterated.

Sources say the stage is set to receive Onoja in PDP any moment from now after the Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, reportedly received a directive from the Presidency to that effect.

A few days ago, Suswam met with some Benue PDP stakeholders to intimate them of Onoja’s return to PDP.

The Nation, however, gathered that not all the major PDP stakeholders have bought into this plan. One of them is Senate President David Mark, who has yet to reconcile with Onoja over their political differences.

Sources in the state revealed that Onoja’s planned return to PDP was part of the Presidency’s alleged plan to checkmate the influence of Mark, whose relationship with the president has been described by sources as lukewarm at best.

The Presidency, according to findings, is allegedly not happy with Mark, the reason which may not be unconnected to the hardline stance of the Senate and the House of Representatives on certain government policies.

Some members of the president’s kitchen cabinet are also not happy with Mark over the proposal by the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 constitution, which recommended a single term of six years for the president and governors.

Though the proposal did not scale through eventually, it generated an angry reaction from the president’s Special Adviser on Political Affairs, Ahmed Gulak, who fell short of accusing the Senate of plotting to frustrate his boss’ alleged second term ambition.

According to sources, not a few of the president’s men believe that Mark is secretly nursing a presidential ambition in 2015, a development that has compelled his being placed under a close watch.

Currently in his fourth term as a senator, a record by any Nigerian politician, Mark is also serving a second term as Nigeria’s longest serving Senate President.

The Idoma-born retired one-star general of the Nigerian Army Signal Corps, is allegedly positioning himself as a compromise candidate in the event that power shifts to the minority tribe in the North, as it is being canvassed in certain political quarters.

But the big poser is: does Onoja who is allegedly still interested in contesting for the Senate in 2015 has the political weight and structure to dislodge Mark?

Also, will the Presidency sacrifice Mark, who has not openly spoken in support of the president’s alleged second term bid for Onoja in its calculations for the 2015 general elections? These puzzles will surely be unravelled in the months ahead.

  • You can’t decide where I visit, Onoja tells ACF

You can’t decide where I visit, Onoja tells ACF

Former Military Administrator of Plateau State, General Lawrence Onoja (rtd) has taken a swipe at the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) and advised it to stop chasing shadows.

He said the group cannot decide for him where to visit and who to support. According to him, he has no regrets visiting President Goodluck Jonathan. He queried some ACF members who often visit the villa with their wives and asked: If they do not support the president why are they always doing in the villa with their wives?

In a telephone interview with The Nation , General Onoja, who is a member of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) dismissed statements credited to the chairman of ACF Alhaji Aliko Mohammed that he and another member of the Pan northern organization visited the Villa to urged the president to run as nothing but selfish.

” My relationship with Arewa Consultative Forum is not a Master-Servant, so nobody has the right to tell me where to go or who to support. President Goodluck Jonathan is our elected president so it is my right as an individual to visit him or any group in the country , and there nothing any one can do about it” said Gen. Onoja .

On allegation that he endorsed the President to run for a second term he said: “President Jonathan is a Nigerian and a minority like me, he has every right like any Nigerian to seek a second term in office, as enshrined in the constitution.”

Gen. Onoja who is a card carrying member of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) warned ACF not to cause disaffection between him and the president.

He said, “If they are fighting for a northern president, they should go ahead and fight for it, but should not use me as guinea pig.”

  • I would have been Boko Haram member, says Onoja

I would have been Boko Haram member, says Onoja

A former Military Governor of Plateau and Katsina states, Brig.-Gen. Lawrence Onoja (rtd), yesterday said the Boko Haram sect is pursuing a just cause.

The retired soldier, however, faulted the killing of innocent people by the sect to get antional attention.

Onoja spoke in Minna, the Niger State capital, when the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) submitted a report on Road Map for Peace Unity and Development of Northern Nigeria to Governor Babangida Aliyu, the Chairman of Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF).

The former military governor stressed that the sect has a “genuine case”.

Onoja said he would have joined the sect if it had not resorted to indiscriminate killings of innocent lives.

He said: “If you look at it from the beginning, they (Boko Haram) have a genuine case. I have told people that I would have been a member of Boko Haram before they started killing people. But if they had started going after those who rigged elections and killing them; those who carried ballot boxes to their homes, thump-printed and started announcing fake results the next day, which is what most people are doing; if they go after such people, I would have joined them. What we don’t want is to start wasting people’s lives.”

The retired soldier recommended dialogue with the leadership of the sect to prevent further killings.

Gen. Onoja noted that security challenges are not peculiar to Nigeria.

According to him, advanced nations, despite their technological wherewithal to get information fast and wage military war against similar sects, still dialogue with some dissident groups for peace.

Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu yesterday in Minna, the state capital, received the report of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) on the need to restore peace in the North.

The Chairman of the National Executive Council of the forum, Alhaji Aliko Mohammed, submitted the report, entitled: The Road map for Peace Unity and Development of Northern Nigeria.

The governor advocated the merger of the ACF with Northern Elders Forum (NEF).

He said: “ACF should swallow the NEF.”
