    Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika has been picked in the 2025 AFCON Best XI for the final group games in Morocco.

    Onyedika, 24, was the only Super Eagles star who made the cut in the Dream XI compiled by Sofascore

    He has the highest personal rating of 9.4 points.

    The defensive midfielder scored twice for the Super Eagles to shoot past Uganda and maintain a perfect start to the 2025 AFCON.

    Nigeria 3-1 Uganda: Two-goal hero Onyedika scoops Man of Match Award

    Raphael Onyedika was  named the official Man of the Match after he netted twice for the Super Eagles to shoot down the Cranes of Uganda 3-1 in a final 2025 AFCON Group C clash in Fes on Tuesday.

    The Club Brugge defensive midfielder struck twice in the second half after he was set up by Samuel Chukwueze as the Super Eagles crowned another dominant display to win their first round group with a perfect score of nine points. He has now scored three international goals.

    He thus becomes the third Nigerian player to win the official award after Semi Ajayi (vs. Tanzania) and Ademola Lookman (vs. Tunisia).

    Onyedika set for comeback againt Dender

    Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika is set to make his long-awaited return from injury when Club Brugge host Benjamin Fredrick’s Dender on Saturday in the Belgian Pro League.

    Onyedika has been sidelined since sustaining a hamstring injury during the thrilling 5-5 draw against Westerlo at the Jan Breydel Stadium in September.

    The 24-year-old Nigerian has missed seven matches across all competitions, four league games, one Crocky Cup fixture, and two UEFA Champions League encounters.

    Thirty-seven days after his last appearance for the Blue-Black,  Onyedika has been included in the 21-man squad for the clash against Dender.

    He is joined on the list by Kaye Furo, son of former Super Eagles centre-back, Iyenemi Furo.

    Before his injury, Onyedika was an integral part of Nicky Hayen’s squad, providing calmness, composure, and defensive balance in midfield.

    His return is expected to boost both club and country, especially with Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff fixtures approaching.

    Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle will also be pleased by the midfielder’s recovery, having faced limited midfield options during October’s qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin.

    With Onyedika’s return, Chelle will be eager for him to regain full match fitness ahead of the crucial playoff tie against Gabon next month.

    Super Eagles duo Tolu Arokodare and Raphael Onyedika have been nominated for the Ebony Boot, presented to the best African player in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League.

    The Ebony Boot recognizes exceptional talent and performance in one of Europe’s competitive football leagues.

    Alongside Arokodare and Onyedika, the nominations include Union Saint-Gilloise’s Nigerian-born striker, Promise David; Congolese international Noah Sadki; and Moroccan winger Zakaria El Ouahdi.

    Arokodare, who plays for Genk, has emerged as a standout performer this season, currently ranking among the league’s top scorers with an impressive tally of 20 goals. His goal-scoring prowess has been pivotal in Genk’s ambitions, contributing to their push for the league title.

    Similarly, Onyedika, who plays for Club Brugge, has been instrumental in his team’s success, helping propel them to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, further emphasizing his status as a key player in a highly competitive environment.

    The awards ceremony is scheduled for May 12 and will be decided by a jury composed of head coaches from league clubs, the national team manager of Belgium, esteemed sports journalists, and one or more honorary jurors.

    Should either Arokodare or Onyedika claim the Ebony Boot, they will join the ranks of distinguished Nigerian footballers who have previously won the award, including legends such as Daniel Amokachi, Victor Ikpeba, Godwin Okpara, Celestine Babayaro, and Paul Onuachu.

    The award has a rich history, having been established in 1992, and although the initial five editions were claimed by Nigerian players, there was a notable gap until Onuachu reignited that legacy by winning it in 2021.

    Club Brugge midfielder Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka from German Bundesliga club Augsburg and Amas Obasogie  were  the early birds in the Super Eagles training camp in Abidjan ahead of Thursday’s crucial 2025 AFCON clash against Benin.

    Also in camp yesterday were Moses Simon, Bruno Onyemaechi , Samuel Chukwueze, Gabriel Osho  and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru even as officials  were  still expecting more players last night.

    Home team Benin are already settled for the game as the bulk of the 25-man squad has jetted in.

    Nigeria won the first leg of the AFCON qualifiers 3-0 in September in Uyo.

    Benin will need a result in the reverse tie to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the AFCON to be staged by Morocco in December 2025.

    Super Eagles midfielder, Alhassan Yusuf was an unused substitute in Royal Antwerp’s 2-1 home loss to former Belgian Pro League champion, Anderlecht in the opening week of the season. 

    But his Nigerian compatriot, Victor Udoh was a late substitute. Udoh came on in the 86th  minute in place of Jacob Ondrejka but he was not able to make the difference for the 2022-23 League champions.

    Also in another topflight game, reigning Belgian Pro League champions, Club Brugge began on a losing note at Standard Liege without their midfield talisman, Raphael Onyedika who is close to a move to another club.

    Liege scored the only goal of the game through Marko Bulat in the 64th minute to pick the maximum points off the reigning champs who prosecuted the game without Onyedika.

    Elsewhere, Super Eagles defender Olisa Ndah found the net for MTN8 reigning champions,Orlando Pirates in their 3-1 win over SuperSport United which qualified them for the semi-final of the competition.

    Ndah thus became the sixth Nigerian to score for Orlando Pirates in the PSL era, and the first since Onyekachi Okonkwo against TP Mazembe in April 2013.

    Meanwhile,  Super Eagles attacker, Ademola Lookman continued from where he finished from last season scoring Atalanta’s consolation goal in their 4-1 defeat by Parma yesterday in a Preseason warm up game.

    Lookman who emerged as the UEFA Europa League Most Valuable Player last season scored 17 goals from 45 games and 8 assists has given a glimpse of how the season would pan out with his goal.

    Club Brugge has put a staggering €20 million which is equivalent to  N34,886,363,000 (in the excess of 35 billion naira) transfer fee on Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika, amid growing interest from several European clubs.

    Onyedika, who was instrumental in Club Brugge’s league success last season, has attracted offers from clubs willing to pay €10 million for his services. However, the Belgian champions are holding out for a higher price, reflecting the player’s value to the team.

    The 22-year-old midfielder has impressed with his performances, scoring three goals and one assist in 30 appearances last season, and Club Brugge is determined to get a bargain price for his transfer.

    Crystal Palace is among the clubs interested in signing Onyedika, but will need to meet Club Brugge’s €20 million asking price to secure his services.

    Meanwhile,  Gift Orban is set to join another French Ligue One Club Brest FC from Lyon barely six months after joining the club.

    Orban left KAA Gent in January for 13 million euros, things did not quite turn out the way he expected at his new club Olympique Lyon, which means a transfer this summer is a possibility.

    Despite a contract with Lyon until mid-2028, the Nigerian is said to be in contact with Brest for a possible transfer.

    Orban was invited into the Super Eagles camp for the match day 1 and 2 of the 2026 World Cup qualifier but he was unable to make his debut due to injury.

    The Nigerian played 16 games with three goals for Lyon last term.

    According to the Spanish media, FC Barcelona are among the top clubs who are interested in signing Raphael Onyedika.

    Defensive midfielder Onyedika was with the Super Eagles at the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire but did not get to play a minute at the tournament.

    At 22 years, he was the youngest player on the Super Eagles squad.

    Another target for Barcelona are Amadou Onana of Premier League club Everton.

    Club Brugge today announced the arrival of Onyedika from the AFCON, where Nigeria were beaten in the final by the host country.
