Onyema speaks to power In Time of Redeemer

On this year’s independence anniversary, Onyema Offoedu-Okeke offered Nigerians Time of Redeemer, a solo ongoing exhibition at Truview Arts and Frames Gallery, Liquid Hub Prive, Ikoyi, Lagos, which captures the nation’s ever-changing socio-economic and socio-political realities in the last 65 years.

As a seasoned artist, architect and author, Offoedu-Okeke took his time to choose topical issues as focus and thrust of his exhibits, which included Time of Redeemer, Fire of Change, Wind of Change, Passenger of Fate, Showdowns and Stalemates, Sleepless series, Mass Agitation, Technocracy, Trial of Oligarchy, among others. Most of the works are rendered in acrylic on canvas, amid their visually striking sociopolitical commentaries. The exhibition will run till October 31.

In fact, there is no better time than this season of independence celebration for the offering of Offoedu-Okeke to the Nigerian public. It is a timely bouquet.

Expectedly, the artist takes the viewers on a journey through colour, history, and thought-provoking reflections. Thematically, the collections are not merely art, but full-blown political commentaries on the state of the nation. He uses symbolic images and figures such as horses, Rolls Royces, doves, and the unusual sight of a young boy balancing a bicycle on his head.  All this underscores the significance of his artistic commentaries encapsulated in Time of redeemer, curated by Juwon Olusanya.

According to the gallery, Offoedu-Okeke’s works are masterful and insightful, amid exploration of the intersection of color, texture, and emotion. “His style—a fusion of African traditional aesthetics with modern abstract and cubist techniques—is distinguished by bold colour palettes, layered in translucent patches that generate vibrancy and rhythm,” the gallery said.

“Each work demonstrates his ability to balance abstraction and representation, producing art that is both visually striking and profoundly resonant, often reflecting on cultural, political, and everyday themes.

We acknowledge the painstaking dedication and time invested in his creative process, evident in the uniqueness of each canvas,” it added.

At a preview session of his works, the artist said that whatever expertise one has developed over time, whether in art, law, advocacy, medicine or clergy, he should be able to deploy it to speak to societal issues.

“It is not only in newspapers we have to speak. Like the legendary Fela Kuti, who used his music to confront Nigeria’s political realities, art too must play that role,” he noted.

Explaining the rationale for the theme and timing of the exhibition, the artist said that it is sad that, “Nigeria still awaits the arrival of anyone upon whom the attire of typical quintessential political redeemer fits well”.

According to him, nothing really has changed since independence as the manner of appearance alternates from the most unassuming carriage to the most sophisticated transporter.

In the title work, ‘Time of Redeemer’ the artist captures a grand entrance of a man on horseback, which is a symbol of hope, power, and sadly the paradox in Nigeria’s search for a true leader. But, in Fire of Change he noted that horses rip through thoroughfare like flames of revolution kindled among disgruntled or awakened masses.

In the work Persistence of Oligarchy the artist used Rolls Royce automobile brand figurative to convey visual power condensed from instances of social political privileges, citation of fiscal might, and the ultimate icon of class distinction. Interestingly, Offoedu-Okeke’s brushstrokes are perceived as caustic and compassionate, as he paints potholes as metaphors, Rolls Royces as cartoonish villains, bicycles as parables of precariousness. Most of his works are a tragicomedy that captures Nigerians suffering and smiling, groaning and dancing, despairing and hoping in the same breath. But, will the redeemer ever come?

The artist is not a stranger to the Nigerian art scene, having author Artist in Nigeria, in 2012, a compendium of who is who in Nigerian art scene. The book was funded by Ford Foundation West Africa and published by 5 Continents Editions, Milan, Italy. His last two solo exhibitions are Homeland Memories at Temple Muse VI, Lagos, in 2014, and Substratum: Anatomy of Support System at the Sachs Art Gallery, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, in 2024.

Onyema hails Tinubu for championing local airlines’ cause

The Chairman of Air Peace Limited, Dr. Allen Onyema, has praised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for championing the cause of Nigerian airlines in global aviation, describing the government’s intervention as pivotal in securing fair opportunities for local operators.

Speaking as guest speaker at the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce Induction Ceremony in Lagos, Onyema disclosed that the Nigerian government stood firmly behind Air Peace during its push for direct entry into the United Kingdom market, insisting on reciprocity in bilateral agreements.

“President Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation did everything possible to support us. The President even warned that if Air Peace was denied entry rights, there would be consequences. That bold stance made all the difference,” Onyema revealed.

He stressed that such government backing has enabled Nigerian carriers to challenge long-standing monopolies and deliver affordable travel options for Nigerians, citing Air Peace’s London operations which have significantly reduced fares on the Nigeria–UK corridor.

NBCC President, Prince Abimbola Olashore, praised Onyema’s candor and reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to promoting policies that align with Nigeria’s long-term economic aspirations.

Meanwhile, Onyema, has paid glowing tribute to Fidelity Bank and its former leadership for backing the airline at inception, despite the general reluctance of financial institutions to invest in Nigerian aviation.

Speaking at the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce Members’ Evening and Induction Ceremony on September 25, 2025, Onyema recounted how Dr. Nnamdi Okonkwo, then Managing Director of Fidelity Bank, approved critical financing that enabled Air Peace to acquire its first aircraft.

“Without the boldness of Fidelity Bank at a time when no Nigerian bank wanted to touch aviation, there might not have been an Air Peace today,” Onyema declared. “The success of this airline belongs to those who stood with us in our early days when the odds were stacked against us.”

He emphasized that aviation remains one of the most capital-intensive industries globally, noting that even legacy carriers such as British Airways and Delta rely heavily on institutional financing.

Onyema’s acknowledgment underscores the critical role of strategic financial partnerships in developing Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem. His remarks were met with applause from guests, including NBCC President Prince Abimbola Olashore, who praised Air Peace for transforming Nigeria’s presence in global aviation.

“The appointment of Keyamo has given rise to transformation of the aviation industry,” he said.

Onyema said that there had been a high  mortality rate of airlines in the country, blaming it on  disconnect between policymakers and business owners in the industry.

“We have a minister who came onboard and surprised all of us.

“One thing he has done very well is that he listens, and this minister has no agenda for his self-interest, he takes a decision and  follows it through.

“When he signed the Cape Town Convention, he was not doing it for any particular person.

“He was doing it for the entire aviation industry, and I am sure, starting from next year, airlines in Nigeria will start accessing dry lease,” he said.

Army probes attacks on soldiers at Abuja Banex plaza

The Army has instituted a probe into the circumstances that surrounded the presence of its personnel at the Banex plaza and the attack that ensued.

It said the investigation was aimed at ensuring the security of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and to prevent “such unwarranted attacks on own personnel.”

Army’s spokesperson, Maj.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, announced this in a statement on Tuesday, May 21.

The Nation reports that some soldiers and traders on Sunday engaged themselves in physical combat at the popular Banex Plaza in Abuja over sales of phones. The situation led to closure of the plaza by security agents to forstore law and order.

Gen. Nwachukwu said: “the soldiers that attacked were “unarmed, and did not engage in any form of aggression, and posed no threat to anyone, therefore, the cruel treatment meted out to them was entirely unwarranted and unjustifiable.”

“ A swift intervention by soldiers and policemen on internal security duties salvaged the situation and rescued the attacked personnel from being lynched by the hoodlums.

“In response to this unfortunate incident, a meeting was convened with the management of Banex Plaza to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of this heinous act by temporarily shutting down activities in the plaza to ensure that the hoodlums who have been using the Banex neighborhood as a sanctuary to pose a security threat to the Federal Capital Territory were apprehended.

“This, is in furtherance of the need for extensive investigation to be conducted at the scene to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of this mayhem.

“ This investigation ultimately aims at ensuring the security of the Federal Capital Territory and to prevent such unwarranted attacks on own personnel and other security operatives, as has been observed in other areas, such as the unfortunate attack in Okuama.”

The army spokesperson said such acts of violence against personnel were not only condemnable, but could degenerate to a breakdown of law and order, orchestrating threats to national security.

He urged the public to “exercise caution and restraint in dealing with military personnel and other security operatives, especially when they are in uniform,” as there are “established channels through which grievances or misconduct by personnel could be reported to the appropriate authorities.”

  • Onyema: running business with a soul

Onyema: running business with a soul

    • By Abdullahi Tanko

There is a strong belief among business leaders around the globe that businesses should no longer be about just making money. Every business should care deeply about society. This is why we frequently now hear of corporate social responsibility. Businesses are these days greatly concerned about social issues like inequality in society, poverty, primitive diseases, environmental protection, discrimination against women and minorities, and the entire gamut of social justice. Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and David M. Rubenstein are among those involved in the Giving Pledge, some of the world’s richest men who have resolved to give much of their wealth to charity or worthy social causes.

Nigeria’s Allen Onyema, founder and chairman of Air Peace, is easily Nigeria’s version of these globally known entrepreneurs because of his commitment to the common good. The Lagos-London flights which his Air Peace started on Saturday, March 30, 2024, bear an eloquent testimony to his passion for the public good. No sooner had he started the lucrative routes than foreign airlines in Nigeria announced drastic reductions in their fares. The foreign carriers, however, cleverly attributed the cutbacks to the Central Bank’s clearance of a backlog of $7bn owed them and the recent marginal gain in naira value. Interestingly, a section of the Nigerian media fell into their mind game and carried their propaganda without proper analysis. But that’s a story for another day.

As Tunde MacAlabi, the founder of the Africa International Investment and Trade Exhibition and Fair noted a few days ago, British Airways now charges N1.25m for a one-way ticket to London, and no longer N3.5m, as was the case a few weeks ago – even during the winter which is normally a low season. KLM has come down from $1,500 a few weeks ago to $641 for a trip from Lagos to Amsterdam. Turkish Airlines now accepts N1.76m instead of N5m, to fly a passenger from Lagos to Istanbul. The list goes on. The good news is that the slashes are on average about 50 percent, and the reductions may continue in the foreseeable future. All this is because Nigeria’s Air Peace is charging a mere N1.2m for the busy Lagos-London route.

The Air Peace chairman, noted MacAlabi, could have gone into a deal with foreign airlines to keep the Lagos-London fare high because of its enormous lucrativeness, but the patriot in him would not have allowed it. Onyema used his planes in 2020 amid the COVID pandemic, when most airlines in the world were in a total mess, to lift Nigerians who were under the sustained barrage of xenophobic violence in South Africa back to the country free of charge. He lifted 286 persons home on May 29, and 301 others the next day. He also brought home distressed Nigerians from war-torn Ukraine and Sudan free of charge in 2022 and 2023, respectively. He has supported the Nigerian national football team without looking back. All this without regard to tribal, sectional, regional, religious and gender differences.

Against this backdrop, Nigerians are touched deeply anytime Onyema says that his reason for setting up Air Peace was not to make money but to serve the tremendous social purpose of providing jobs for Nigerians and creating business opportunities where they could serve as suppliers and consultants. I have attended two such meetings in Abuja in the last two years. Indeed, it was his late father, as he revealed, who made him set up Air Peace in 2012, and the following year it commenced commercial operations. It is today Nigeria’s largest air carrier, with 38 planes. It began when Onyema’s father asked him to employ teeming kinsmen and others flooding the house for financial assistance. He took to the airline business because he already had a private jet and acquired some aircraft management experience.

It is logical to hold up Allen Onyema as a quintessential Nigerian practitioner of shared prosperity, the concept that everyone in society should benefit from prosperity. The idea that a business should exist purely for the shareholders is now discredited. Shareholder capitalism which the likes of Milton advocated fiercely has fallen out of favour because it has created or worsened many problems in the world like the phenomenon of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer.

In place of shareholder capitalism, there is now stakeholder capitalism. Stakeholders in a business are not just the investors but also the workers, the suppliers, distributors, the host community, the government, and even non-government organizations (NGOs). Among the top persons who have embraced this new thinking is Klaus Schwab, the German engineer, economist, and founder of the famous World Economic Forum whose annual meetings in January in Davos, Switzerland, are attended by thousands of top government leaders, writers, business leaders and thought leaders around the globe.

It is delightful that there are Nigerian entrepreneurs who subscribe to shared prosperity. Onyema stands out even among his peers. The new Lagos-London operations by Air Peace mean more aircraft for the airline, more direct and indirect jobs for Nigerians and, of course, more prosperity for our people. To repeat the obvious, the Lagos-London flights have resulted in radical reductions in fares for Nigerian travellers. The cuts mean more savings for the people and more investments in their well-being and their businesses. The Air Peace founder truly runs a business with a soul.

Aviation top shot and head honcho of Air Peace, Barr. Dr Allen Onyema has not stopped making his mark in all facets of life.

He is a man who believes you can break boundaries and you should not restrict your limit that’s why he has been able to turn things around in the aviation section getting the moniker; the Aviation game changer.

Since his foray into the aviation business, he has recorded a landmark achievement by flying the nation high with pride across the skyline around the world providing domestic and international services with uncommon experience. He has become a beautiful bride that all ambassadors have been lobbying him to open the route of their country and Nigeria to create a trade and commodity exchange path for development. He has done this with much gusto while also speaking openly on how Nigeria Aviation can be further developed.
