Festac 77 @ 40: Ooni gives blessing, wants traditional rulers involved in planning

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, the Ojaja II, has said that celebrating Festac 77, 40 years after Nigeria hosted it, will help Nigerians to reenact their traditional values, customs and cultures.

The monarch said this while responding to questions from the management and staff of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Lagos office that paid him a courtesy call in Ile-Ife.

They were accompanied with editors and reporters from the editorial and the multi-media departments of the agency .

The oba said that Festac “77 brought love and unity to Nigeria , the host nation then, from all the 59 countries that participated in the one-month-long event.

NAN reports that the Centre for Black African Arts and Culture (CBAAC) is planning to organize events that would commemorate 40 years of Festac’77 from this April to propagate the values and originality of black culture.

It was also initiated to improve and develop the African culture and Nigeria in particular most importantly to leave a legacy that  younger generations will live to remember and uphold.

Ogunwusi said that Festac ” 77 brought people of all races and nationalities to Nigeria to showcase their arts, culture and traditions, adding no festival had since surpassed it.

He said that Festac “77 projected the modernisation of cultures and also put forth the ideology of race equality between Africa and other continents of the world.

Ogunwusi said, “Festac ” 77 can rightly be seen as a demonstration and call for African unity and cultural development.

“Festac 77 at 40 is worth celebrating and it will receive my support because of the great legacies it left behind after Nigeria hosted it,’’ he said

The traditional ruler, however, urged CBAAC, the organisers of activities that would mark 40 years after FESTAC’’77 to involve traditional rulers from across the country in its planning.

CBAAC should work closely with traditional rulers because they are the custodians of the African cultures, traditions and heritages, he said.

He said that he had been reading about the coming events in the newspapers but the organizers had not reached out to him.

I think CBAAC should reach out to us traditional rulers across the country for guidance and royal blessings before, during its implementations and after the celebrations, he said.

The monarch also frowned at those saddled with the administration of cultural activities but only assign projects from the sector to those not knowledgeable.

“Traditional projects should be given to the traditionalists, and not just to any person that does not know anything about culture and tradition.

“ The traditionalists are the real custodians of our cultures and traditions. We have killed our culture by giving cultural works to non-practitioners, ” he said.

He urged Nigerians to uphold their cultures and stop the idea of borrowing western culture and civilisation.

“Nigeria has a rich cultural heritage which is wide and varied; and culture is one area where they have a lot to showcase to the rest of the world.

“Nigeria is the most populous black nation in the world with the largest concentration of blacks,’’ he said.

The monarch lauded the Yoruba race and other ethnic groups in Nigeria for upholding and sustaining their traditional values and culture as genuine Africans.

“The Yoruba are still the one upholding the culture of the black race in the world.

“ Some of the nationals of Cuba, Brazil, Caribbean Island, Trinidad and Tobago emancipated from Nigeria, from Yoruba land precisely.

“They speak and teach Yoruba language in some parts of these countries. Some of their nationals had also traced their roots to Yoruba land,” he said.

The other ethnic groups in the country are also doing well and are among the best custodians of their traditional cultures and heritages in the world.

“This is highly commendable,’’ he said.

Recession: Bank of Agriculture to assist farmers, youths with loans

The Bank of Agriculture (BOA) says it is ready to provide financial assistance to farmers and youths in the country to boost food production through mechanised farming.

Mr Babatunde Igun, an Executive Director of the bank, said this during a courtesy visit to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, on Thursday.

He expressed the bank’s willingness to partner with the traditional ruler on engaging youths in farming.

Igun added that with the dwindling effects of crude oil price and the negative impact on the economy, there was urgent need to assist farmers and youths in diversifying the economy.
“We have all seen the dwindling effects of crude oil price on our economy in the last one or two years.

“We need to feed ourselves, stop importation of unnecessary food items and that is why BOA is relevant.

“We are ready to assist farmers as well as youths to go back to farming. Our plan is not for them to go back to hoes and cutlasses farming but rather mechanised farming.

“I believe with the assistance BOA is ready to give, our agriculture system will begin to take a new shape in the next few years,’’ he said.

Igun also said that the bank was ready to partner with the Ooni’s agriculture development initiative for the youths in the town.

He said that BOA would assist 150 youths who were being trained by the traditional ruler on agriculture mechanisation and production skill with loan facility.

“The most important thing for anyone going to agriculture is skills acquisition.

“That is where the Ooni has played a dominant role by bringing 150 youths together in the last four months to train them in agricultural mechanisation.

“And that is why we are interested in giving them loan after their training.

“In BOA, once we see an organisation, state or individual that is passionate about youths, women and agriculture, we try to come to them and find a way we can work together,’’ he said.

Igun added that more than 400 farmers had been empowered in Ile-Ife with N500 million loan facilities in the last few years, adding that the bank would do more.

In his remarks, the Ooni said he was ready to partner with the bank to encourage youths in food production.
The monarch, who noted that there were a lot of unemployed youths, said governments and the private sector, should be willing to assist youths to embrace farming.

He, however, urged BOA management to make their presence more visible by providing loans to farmers.

“If BOA can be used as a proper conduit in terms of giving soft loans on a long term basis, it will encourage the youths to go back to the farm,’’ the monarch said.

She insisted that agriculture without value added chain could not sustain the economy.

According to her, FIIRO is the best in processing solid minerals, crops like cashew, cassava, yam, fruits, plantain and fish among others.

  • Arik Air gets royal endorsement

    • Says supporting Nigerian brands is good for business
Arik Air  has received a royal endorsement from the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II.
Last Wednesday, the  foremost traditional ruler and a large entourage including some traditional rulers from the South West States demonstrated his support for Nigerian brands by flying  Arik Air from Lagos to New York on a tour of America.
The First Class Monarch who travelled from Lagos to New York aboard Arik Air’s A330-200 aircraft that departed the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos for JF Kennedy Airport, New York said his patronage by flying the airline is to prove the point that you cannot be wrong  your own .
He said:  “I am an apostle of made-in-Nigeria and that is why everything you see on me except my wrist watch are hundred  per cent made in Nigeria.”
Speaking with a team from Arik Air led by the Chief Pilot, Captain Adetokunbo Adekunbi, who were on hand to usher him to the departure lounge of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ooni Ogunwusi in company with his wife, Olori Wuraola Ogunwusi, said his decision to fly Arik Air to New York was a deliberate one aimed at reinforcing the need to patronize Nigerian brands.
He commended the management of Arik Air for flying the flag of Nigeria high and pledged to use his position to get Nigerians to patronize the airline.
Reiterating his foremost position in Yoruba land, Ooni Ogunwusi stated that his flying Arik Air with other traditional rulers will bring good fortune to the airline.
The Ooni’s entourage numbering over 50 had not less than 10 other Yoruba traditional rulers from Oyo, Osun and Ekiti States.
  • Awujale is last in ranking among Yoruba Obas – Alake

Awujale is last in ranking among Yoruba Obas – Alake

The rift between the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, and the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, worsened on Monday with the Alake insisting that the Awujale remained the least in the echelon of status among the Yoruba major traditional rulers.

Alake said his earlier listing of the Awujale as occupying the last position after the quartet of the Ooni of Ife, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba of Benin and Alake of Egbaland, “was supported by documentary evidence and therefore stands by his position.”

Oba Adetona had last Thursday claimed among other things that the Alake was a junior chief in Egba forest under Alaafin who fled to Ibadan and that Alake is also of the same status with some Ijebu Obas like the Ebumawe of Ago – Iwoye that are under his (Adetona) jurisdiction.

The Ijebu Paramount Ruler made the remarks in Lagos during the launch of an Endowment Fund for a Chair at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago – Iwoye, in reply to an earlier ranking of the Yoruba obas by Alake which placed him at the tail end on the hierarchy.

But Monday, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, who spoke through 22 Egba chiefs, including 15 Ogboni chiefs, that gathered in Ake Palace, Abeokuta, Ogun state, to reply Adetona, said the ranking of the Yoruba Traditional Rulers was carried out in 1937 by the then Ooni of Ife.

Reading a prepared speech signed by the Balogun of Egbaland, Chief Sikirulai Atobatele during a press conference, the Baaroyin of Egbaland, Chief Layi Labode, said the ranking took place at the Central Native Council meeting in Lagos and was chaired by the Governor – General, Sir William Macgregor.

Labode added that those in attendance at the said 1937 meeting in Government House, Lagos, were the Ooni of Ife, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba of Benin, Alake of Abeokuta and the Awujale of Ijebu – Ode.

He said their concern about Awujale’s comment is predicated on the monarch’s “self – indulgence to churn out outright historical falsehoods in the presence of knowledgeable Nigerians.”

Labode said; “historically speaking, Alake was higher by Salary Differentials paid by the Colonial Government” at the time.

According to him, the Alake of Abeokuta earned £2,250 while the Awujale of Ijebu – Ode earned £1,700 during the colonial era.

“Awujale (claimed he) made several calls to Alake to confirm if Alake actually made the statement on Yoruba Obas ranking. Awujale also claimed that Oba Rilwan Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos, also contacted Alake on the same issue which Alake again denied.

“(The fact) both Awujale and Oba of Lagos actually called Alake on the ranking of Yoruba Obas, Alake responded that his ranking was supported by documentary evidence and he therefore stands by his position,” Labode said.

The Baaroyin of Egbaland and Media aide of the Alake also refuted claims by Oba Adetona that the Alake was a junior chief in Egba forest under Alaafin where he(Alake) fled to Ibadan and later to Abeokuta and met the Osile, Olowu, Agura and Olubara already on ground.

Labode said, on the contrary, 20 Alake had reigned in Egba forest prior to the founding of Abeokuta, the modern day capital of Ogun state, explaining that that there was also no Alake that fled to Ibadan or took refuge there.

According to him, the Egbas arrived and settled in Abeokuta in 1830 with the first Alake installed in 1854 followed by the Olowu in 1855, the Agura in 1870 and Osile in 1897.

He stressed that by the Egba United Government Proclamation of February 1st, 1898, and approved by the then Governor of Lagos, the Egba cabinet had Alake as President, Osile Minister of Justice, Agura Minister of Communications and Works and the Olowu, the Minister of Finance.

He also noted that some of the comments on Alake by Oba Adetona was “uncalled for and neither civil nor decent,” but said the Egba chiefs would not “defile the sacred Yoruba Traditional Institution and therefore, refrain from trading insult with a highly regarded monarch of his (Awujale) status.”

Among the Chiefs present are Bameto of Egbaland, Chief George Taylor, Balogun of Ilaho, Chief Adebayo Soyoye, and the Ilagbe of Egbaland, Chief Akin Akinwale.
