  • Ooni to Tinubu: invest in Ile-Ife historical sites

Ooni to Tinubu: invest in Ile-Ife historical sites

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should look inwards to invest in historical sites located in Ile-Ife, Osun State, as part of the national economic diversification strategy.

The Personal Assistant to the Director, Media & Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, Seun Oketooto, has said.

He said investment in Ile-Ife’s historical sites, improvement of infrastructure, promotion of cultural tourism and creation of policies that encouraged local and international visitors would not only honour ancestors, but also secure economic prosperity for future generations.

He called on governmental organisations, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), national and international organisations and private sector players to extend their corporate social responsibility (CSR) to Ile-Ife, the sacred city of the Yoruba race.

He says just as global corporations and foundations invest in the preservation of heritage sites in Europe, Asia and the Middle East, so too must Ile-Ife receive attention and funding.

In the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria, wealth, known as Aje in Yoruba, Aku in Igbo and Arziki in Hausa holds a deep spiritual and economic significance. Aje is more than material prosperity; it is a divine force, an entity that governs trade, enterprise and abundance.

According to Ifa history, Aje is one of the deities that accompanied Oduduwa to Ile-Ife, the cradle of Yoruba civilisation, and has since remained a central force in the economic life of the people. No wonder anywhere the blue-line blood of Oduduwa, Arole Oduduwa, Olofin Adimula Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, goes, Aje must follow him.

Every Monday, the Yoruba people dedicate the day to Aje, as Ooni Ogunwusi or his emissaries lead Aje processions from the palace to the shrine of Aje in Ile-Ife, praying for prosperity and seeking divine blessings for businesses and endeavours. This annual reverence for Aje has been greatly amplified by the unrelenting efforts of the Iyalaje of the Source, Chief Mrs. Toyin Kolade, whose dedication to the propagation and celebration of Aje has solidified Ile-Ife’s position as the global spiritual headquarters of wealth. She remains an integral part of history, ensuring that Aje continues to be celebrated with grandeur, attracting devotees, entrepreneurs and economic stakeholders from around the world.

Despite this historical and spiritual connection to wealth, successive Nigerian governments have failed to recognise and harness the economic potential embedded in Ile-Ife, the spiritual headquarters of the Yoruba race. The town is home to invaluable historical and cultural sites that, if properly developed, can generate immense revenue for the country.

Ile-Ife is a living museum, with numerous sites that hold untold economic potential capable of transforming Nigeria’s tourism sector. The Oduduwa Grove, where Oduduwa, the progenitor of the Yoruba race, settled, should be a globally recognised pilgrimage site, drawing millions of visitors annually. The Opa Oranmiyan Shrine, housing the sacred Oranmiyan staff, is a historical wonder that should be generating millions in heritage tourism. The Moremi Ajasoro Cemetery, where one of the greatest heroines in Yoruba history rests, holds the potential to attract scholars, historians and cultural enthusiasts from around the world.

Beyond these, sites such as Ita-Yemoo Shrine, Igbo Olokun, Igbo Odaye, and Olokun Grove, among others, remain largely neglected. A government-driven investment in infrastructure, preservation and proper management of these sites will create thousands of jobs, boost local businesses and significantly contribute to Nigeria’s GDP.

Countries with far less historical and cultural heritage than Ile-Ife have built thriving economies around their historical sites. For example: Israel (population: 9.5 million) generates over $6 billion annually from religious tourism, with visitors trooping to sites like the Western Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Saudi Arabia generates over $12 billion yearly from religious tourism. Hajj alone contributes significantly to its economy. Greece earns over $18 billion annually from cultural tourism, thanks to well-maintained ancient sites such as the Acropolis and Delphi. Egypt, with its pyramids and temples, attracts millions of visitors yearly, generating $13 billion from tourism in 2023 alone.

If Ile-Ife, the Mecca and Jerusalem of the Yoruba race is properly developed, Nigeria can be earning billions of dollars annually from cultural and religious tourism. Pilgrimages, festivals and academic excursions can turn the city into a global attraction, bringing in foreign exchange and boosting local economies.

The time has come for Nigeria to recognise what is sitting in its backyard. The wealth (Aje) that people seek far and wide is embedded in Ile-Ife, waiting to be harnessed.

We urge President Tinubu to look into the wealth that is embedded at the backyard of Olufe and invest in it as part of the national economic diversification strategy. A deliberate investment in Ile-Ife’s historical sites, improvement of infrastructure, promotion of cultural tourism, and the creation of policies that encourage both local and international visitors will not only honour our ancestors, but also secure economic prosperity for future generations.

Ooni, Olubadan attend Installation of Ibadan philanthropist, Adeshina, wife in Ogun

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, were among the notable dignitaries at the palace of the Olu Orile Ilawo Kingdom, Abeokuta, Ogun State, where Dr. Kadri Adeshina and his wife, Ajokeade, were installed as Asoju Oba and Erelu Asoju Oba of the kingdom.

Representing the Olubadan at the event was the Maye Olubadan, Oloye Lekan Alabi.

The Chairman of the Ile Tuntun Community Development Association in Ibadan, Olasunkanmi Okuneye, also led a delegation of dignitaries to the occasion.

During the ceremony, the monarch, Oba (Prof) Alexander MacGregor, presented certificates and insignia of office to several Baales under his rulership.

He highlighted that Dr. Adeshina and his wife were chosen for the prestigious titles in recognition of their extensive philanthropic efforts, which have positively impacted numerous urban communities within and beyond Ogun State.

Speaking after the installation, Dr. Adeshina expressed gratitude for the honour, noting that the recognition from a region outside his immediate community underscores the universal nature of humanity and the importance of impactful philanthropy.

“Receiving this title in another region and state demonstrates that humanity transcends our immediate environment. It focuses on the impact we have on the poor and needy,” he said.

Dr. Adeshina further recounted his charitable contributions, which include supporting children, widows, orphans, and youth through educational assistance, economic empowerment, health and welfare programs, and career development initiatives across various states and regions in Nigeria.

The event celebrated unity, cultural heritage, and the importance of giving back to society, with dignitaries and community members applauding the couple’s dedication to philanthropy.

“Chieftaincy title is for people with integrity, people who make contributions to society in terms of philanthropy, and who have a good character. So I think those core values are the things that make an institution decide to say, let’s honour this person. So it’s a way to encourage you to continue to do your good work and contribute to society.

“So it’s not about money. Through my Kadri Adeshina Foundation, our interest is widows, children and youth as well. There have been occasions where I have sponsored some sports tournaments for youth and teenagers who are still in school as a way to encourage them to continue to build their talents.

“This gesture started way back in 2015 and we have been reaching out to people from various places. So when I do, when I make things, I contribute to society. I don’t get to look at what I’ve done. I just feel there’s so much to be done in the future. So, I leave what I have done behind and focus on the future of what I have not done.

“But there’s still more to be done and I will do it to the best of my ability, based on what I have and the resources available to me, I will make my contribution to society

He assured that the new titles will spur him to do more saying, “Well, the implication is, it’s more like more, it’s a call to duty. The title is a recognition of what I have done and what I am doing and a call for me to do more for the people.

“And, of course, I’ll put more energy and more time, more resources into societal development, community development, peace initiatives and all that. Those are my core interests. It’s a call to duty to do more.”

He appealed to people of substance to be mindful of how they use their wealth and resources, especially in improving the lives of people around and society at large.

“The message I have for people is wherever you are, there’s something you can do. Look out for how you can impact the next person to you. So, if people are not commending you, God is watching.

“God will honour you one day. And when, like a friend said, when God honours you, men will honour you. So, I think what life is about, is about the impact you make in life that posterity would consider.

“So, wherever you are, whatever resources you have, your time, your talent, and your treasure, those three Ts, like the teachers in Rotary, are the things required of you. You may not have the treasure, but you may have the time. Put in that time.

“Do some community development efforts. It may be your talent that is required. Use your talent to help your next-door neighbour. Use your talent to improve humanity. Leave the world a better place than you made it. That’s the idea.”

Apparently speaking on certain programmes of government that are abused by some individuals, especially in the areas of philanthropy and social security, Dr Adeshina said the government has the constitutional power to make tremendous changes in the society but to achieve results, such changes must be backed up as policies.

He said when the government puts the right policies in place, it creates an enabling environment for individuals, investment and business development to thrive.

Read Also: Christmas: Olubadan felicitates Christians, urges emulation of Christ virtues

He added that the government must also push the policies so that society and the people can be better.

He said: “Government has the constitutional power to make tremendous changes in our society. So, some things require government backing to make those effects, those changes.

“Of course, we always call on the government to please make those policies, let those policies come out, those policies that would change the lives of people, policies that will help improve the lives of people, policies that will help bring prosperity to us all. The more the merrier. If we are all okay, society will be a better place for all of us to live.

“Government, when they put the right policies in place, it creates an enabling environment for investment, enabling environment for business development, enabling environment for extremists to thrive. So, it is important for those policies, for government to help push those policies. We see the way our society is, so we, of course, call on government to do what they are supposed to do.”

Ooni applauds Agbeyewa Farms for transforming ‘kidnappers axis’ into 20,000 hectares of opportunity

The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Babatunde Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II CFR, has commended Agbeyewa Farms for spearheading a revolutionary transformation of Ekiti North, an area once plagued by insecurity, into a thriving hub for cassava cultivation.

During his visit to the mechanized farm, Ooni Ogunwusi lauded the bold vision of converting over 20,000 hectares of land into cassava plantations, a move poised to redefine Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.

The initiative by Agbeyewa Farms is not just about farming—it is about rewriting the narrative of a community previously defined by fear and insecurity.

By turning what was once a “kidnappers axis” into a land of opportunity, the project aims to bolster food security, attract foreign investment, and generate countless job opportunities for local residents.

Over two days, Ooni Ogunwusi toured the expansive farms, spanning over five communities, including Ipao and Itapaji.

Witnessing Agbeyewa’s advanced agricultural techniques firsthand, he expressed admiration for their innovative practices and their commitment to addressing Nigeria’s pressing cassava production challenges.

“I’m here to see things for myself because seeing is believing. Clearly, Agbeyewa has established itself as the largest cassava producer in Nigeria. There is absolutely no reason why we should be a poor nation,” Ooni Ogunwusi stated.

He emphasised the untapped potential of cassava derivatives, such as sorbitol, starch, and ethanol, industries worth billions of dollars globally but underutilized in Nigeria.

Highlighting Agbeyewa Farms’ ability to achieve unprecedented yields of over 30 tons per hectare—compared to the national average of 4 to 6 tons—he praised their cultivation of drought-resistant cassava varieties as a model for innovation in agriculture.

The Ooni also spoke passionately about the need to involve Nigeria’s youth in agriculture, urging them to embrace the sector’s potential to drive economic growth.

While acknowledging the role of government in providing essential support like land clearing and access to modern farming equipment, he stressed that individuals must take responsibility for fostering agricultural progress.

Quoting the nation’s president, Ooni Ogunwusi remarked, “We cannot continue to farm with outdated methods. Agbeyewa Farms is showing us that innovation is not just an option—it’s a necessity.

They are leading the way in proving that agriculture can be both profitable and transformative.”

The Ooni praised Agbeyewa Farms’ Chairman, John Olajide, for his visionary leadership in turning a once-troubled region into an agricultural success story.

Olajide, founder of the Fortune 500 company Axxes Technologies LLC, has returned to Nigeria with the goal of building a multi-billion Naira enterprise that will create thousands of jobs for the nation’s youth.

In addressing broader issues in the agricultural sector, Ooni Ogunwusi called for urgent action to resolve the security challenges that deter farmers from cultivating their lands.

“Nigerians have often been wary of doing the hard part of agriculture, but it’s time we face these challenges. Our nation depends on it. I’m taking it upon myself to be a major advocate for combating insecurity in agriculture,” he said.

He added, “The current administration is making progress, but we need to be more serious as a nation. We must unite and face these challenges head-on to secure a brighter future for agriculture and for Nigeria as a whole.”

The Ooni’s visit underscores the transformative power of Agbeyewa Farms’ cassava revolution, turning adversity into opportunity and laying the foundation for sustainable economic and social development in Ekiti and beyond.

  • Our plan to unite Yoruba obas, by Ooni, Olugbon

Our plan to unite Yoruba obas, by Ooni, Olugbon

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, have begun a collaboration on strengthening unity among Yoruba obas.

The pre-eminent monarchs will also develop closer relationships with fellow traditional rulers and motivate them to work with governors in ensuring continued prioritisation of the security and welfare of their subjects across the six Southwest states.

The Olugbon made this known in a statement yesterday, saying the collaboration would also promote ‘Omoluabi’ ethos in the region to ensure the current leaders bequeath a region that future generations will be proud of.

Oba Alao countered social media reports suggesting that the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Adewale Akanbi, chased Oba Ogunwusi during a visit. He said Oba Ogunwusi confirmed to him that he never visited the Oluwo at any time.

The statement said: “It is with great pleasure that I announce the commencement of a partnership with His Imperial Majesty, Arole Oduduwa Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, aimed at fostering unity among the traditional rulers (obas) of Yoruba land and promoting peace throughout Southwest Nigeria.

“This partnership heralds a new era in fortifying harmonious relations among the traditional rulers across the six states of the Southwest. We will also collaborate closely with the governors of the region to ensure the welfare and security of our subjects and residents remain paramount.

“The foundation of this initiative was established during my recent visit to the Ooni in his esteemed palace at Ile-Ife, where I extended my congratulations on his 50th birthday. Our discourse was both productive and candid, and I was met with a gracious reception from the Ooni and his court. Our discussion encompassed the perceived lack of unity among Yoruba obas, as well as the pressing issues of security and welfare for our people in Yoruba land and Nigeria as a whole.

“As pre-eminent traditional leaders in Yoruba land, we reached a consensus on the imperative to fortify the bonds of unity among our fellow obas. Furthermore, we acknowledged the necessity of counteracting the influence of fifth columnists among obas—those who seek to sow discord and pit one monarch against another over unfounded or emotional matters.

“I hereby implore those who perpetuate disunity among Yoruba traditional rulers to cease their divisive actions forthwith. I assure them that, with the renewed resolve of both the Ooni and myself, the machinations of fifth columnists shall no longer prevail. We are committed to advancing Oba Ogunwusi’s unity agenda by engaging our esteemed colleagues across the six Southwest states, fostering closer relationships that will thwart any divisive efforts.

“The house of Oduduwa is one, and we shall persist as one, working collaboratively to elevate Yoruba land as a source of pride for current and future generations.

“His Imperial Majesty, the Ooni of Ife, is a true patriarch and an esteemed leader to the entire Yoruba race. I urge all fellow obas to unite in collaboration with him to collectively promote peace within our respective domains.

“During our dialogue, Ooni Ogunwusi confirmed that he has never visited the palace of the Oluwo of Iwo, contrary to circulating social media reports suggesting that the latter spurned him and that he chose to ignore such reports like many others that do not contribute to his unity agenda.

“In analysing the current economic challenges facing Nigeria, we contemplated all contributing factors and the circumstances that have led us to our present state as a nation.

“It is our understanding that Nigeria’s current economic predicament is not dissimilar to the realities of numerous countries worldwide. We face a global economic crisis that is precipitating inflation in several nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada.

“Moreover, the inadequate management of the economy in previous years has brought Nigeria to its present state, thereby compelling President Bola Tinubu to implement reforms that are essential for the revitalisation of our economy.

“It is upon this premise that we appeal to the citizens of Nigeria, particularly our subjects across the Southwest, to exercise patience with the current administration as it diligently endeavours to rectify the situation in Nigeria. This period of inconvenience is indeed temporary. Government at all levels requires the support of its citizenry to achieve success.

“Once again, we, as traditional rulers, shall collaborate with our governors to undertake further measures that will mitigate the adverse effects of these reforms while simultaneously promoting the ethos of ‘Omoluwabi’ in this generation.”
