Troops discover 25 human skulls, skeleton in militant shrines

    …Arrest 40 IPOB members
Gory and grim sight confronted troops of Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe (ODS) at four militant shrines tucked inside the creeks of Akpabuyo and Bakassi local government areas, Cross River State.

The troops found 25 human skulls at various decomposing stages.

The discovery, it was gathered, raised concerns that the militants were engaged in human sacrifice, perhaps, to fortify themselves for their devilish operations.

The shrines, which were discovered at Ikot Ene Idam. Abakpa and Ikang creeks of the councils belonged to a notorious militant group, the Bakassi Strike Force (BSF).

The troops, who raided the area following a tip-off, also found other human body parts that littered the area including a complete human skeleton.

Confirming the development, the Deputy Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre (JMCC), Lt. Com. Thomas Otuji, said the operation was conducted by ODS’ Sector 4.

He said: “During the cordon and search operations, the troops discovered 25 human skulls in various stages of decomposition, a complete human skeleton and several other human body parts.

“The shrines were destroyed as troops continue to search for the perpetrators of these heinous acts against humanity. With the clearance of these shrines, the Bakassi Strike Force has effectively been smoked out from the areas it’s used to hold sway.

“It should be noted that the senseless killing of humans for ritual purposes is sacrilegious and will not be tolerated in any form within the Joint Operation Area”.

Otuji said that the troops while combing the creeks arrested two suspects at Idebe Ifak Anam, Ikot Okon Edem and Abakpa in Bakassi.

He said the suspects after preliminary investigation were discovered to be acting as spies for BSF militants.

Also, troops of Sector 2 operating in Bayelsa State, reportedly arrested 44 members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) at a club along Mabinton Estate, Okaka, Yenagoa.

Otuji alleged that the group was planning to establish a state chapter of the banned IPOB to disrupt public peace.

“They were duly arrested and handed over to relevant authorities for further investigations. The unity of Nigeria is not negotiable and sacrosanct.

“Hence, any unlawful gathering that will cause mayhem, threaten the unity and sovereignty of the country will not be condone”, he said.

Otuji noted that in Rivers State, troops of Sector 3 raided den of cultists in Finima, Bonny following a distress call that the hoodlums were terrorizing the community with AK47 rifles.

He said the kingpin of the cultists identified as Eagle Face, on sighting the troops, dived into the water adding that two days after his lifeless body was seen by the locals floating in the creeks.

According to him the locals retrieved the body and buried it at Bonny River bank.

But he said that two of the suspected cult members were arrested with one locally made pistol, a machete and two handsets.

He said the acting Commander, Brig. Gen. Kevin Aligbe, commended members of the public for their continuous cooperation and provision of timely information to the troops.

He said Aligbe reassured residents and oil companies operatin in the region particularly the people of Southern Cross River of their safety and urged them to go about their legitimate businesses.

“Operation Delta Safe has the full backing of the Federal Government to bring sanity to the Joint Operation Area within its rules of engagement”, he said.

A friend to the footballer, identified as Nyieye, confirmed that Okhaki is notorious for harbouring bad  boys who are not militants.
“They smoke and drink in the area. As an established footballer from the community, many of the youths usually swam around him and he reciprocated by buying them drinks.
“We gathered that some youths had the previous days angered some soldiers but they came when Izu Joseph was hanging out with his people. He was shot three times. Others died but we only heard about Izu,” he said.

Troops battle militants, kill seven in Niger Delta

Troops of Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe (ODS), Friday, killed seven militants during a gun battle in the creeks of Cross River State.

It was gathered that ODS’ troops of Sector 4 encountered the militants identified as members of the notorious Bakassi Strike Force (BSF), when they raided their hideouts at Ekpere Effiong creeks, in Akpabuyo area of the state.

The militants, who were dressed in military camouflage with charms and amulets, reportedly engaged the troops in a gunfire that lasted for about two hours.

On September 24, the militant group attacked a military location in Efut Isighi waterfront in Southern Cross River and reportedly killed two soldiers.

Confirming the development, the Deputy Media Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre (JMCC), Lt. Col. Thomas Otuji, said troops deployed in Efut Isighi encountered the militants again on September 30.

He said: “Troops of Sector 4 Operation DELTA SAFE deployed at Efut Isighi at about 1:00am on 30 September 2016 engaged the Bakassi Strike Force in gun battle that lasted for more than 2 hours.

“The militants who were in military camouflage uniforms carrying charms and amulets were spotted at Ekpere Effiong creek in Akpabuyo during a special operation by own troops.

“The operation led to the killing of 7 members of Bakassi Strike force militants and recovering of several arms and ammunition.

“Items recovered include, Grenade Launcher, 7.62mm NATO belted GPMG ammunition and non-disintegrating MG links.

“It should be noted that this latest reprisal attack on own troop position was sequel to ongoing operations and destruction of several militant camps, vehicles, power bike and other household items”.

Otuji the operation that led to the killing of the militants was in line with the mandate of ODS to protect oil and gas infrastructure, prevent and deter militancy, sea robbery, crude oil theft and other forms of criminality within the Niger Delta region.

In another development, he said the Sector 1 of ODS foiled an attempt by suspected vandals to breach a pipeline belonging to the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).

He identified the oil installation as the OML 30, a 16-inch trans-Forcado pipeline running from Ughelli pumping station to Focados terminal at Agbowhiame, community, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State.

He said two suspected vandals, Thomas Okoro and Maselk Boyi, were arrested for further investigations.

He said: “On interrogation, eight other suspects mentioned by the two arrested suspects are being trailed.

“Several items including; gas cylinder tubes with accessories, hacksaw, pipe wrench and personal effects were recovered at the scene.

“Operation Delta Safe wishes to assure the general public of its determination to degrade and flush out criminal elements in our communities.

“Members of the public are therefore requested to provide timely information to Operation Delta Safe detachments and other security agencies in order to apprehend these criminals from the hideouts”.

The troops also recovered military gunboats, arms and ammunition carted away by the militants during the ambush.

Troops seize Bayelsa creeks in search of militants

Search for Niger Delta militants began, Tuesday, as stern-looking and war-kitted troops barricaded some creeks and waterways of Bayelsa State.

The operation commenced following the declaration by the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe (ODS) that it would go “on the offensive” to fish out all the militants and killers of soldiers at a military checkpoint in Nembe on Monday morning.

Militants dared the military on Monday when they ambushed the checkpoint, killed three soldiers on duty and carted away gunboats, rifles and ammunition.

They held the community spellbound with gunshots that lasted for about 30 minutes.

It was gathered Tuesday that there was massive movement of troops to the community and surrounding creeks.

Fighter jets were said to have hovered continually over the community as soldiers took strategic positions and cordoned off some waterways.

Nembe was described by a resident who spoke in confidence as “ghost town” following massive exodus of panic-stricken locals out of the community.

“The town is deserted. People who ran away are yet to return. Stores and shops are closed. We can’t even find anything to buy. Some ran into the mangroves, others into smaller communities and Yenagoa.

“Some of us are only able to stay because the Deputy Governor, John Jonah, and the JTF commander held a town hall meeting with us and assured us of our safety. But people who ran away have not come back,” he said.

Jonah who led a delegation of the state government and the Commander of ODS, Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie, were said to have met with the residents.

The deputy governor commiserated with the military over the brutal killing of the soldiers.

At the meeting that was held at the King Koko Square, Nembe, Jonah noted that the killing of the innocent soldiers was senseless, barbaric and not in the best interest of the government and people of the state, especially the peace-loving people of Nembe.

He described the incident as most painful and unfortunate and recalled that a similar one occurred in July, last year.
He said the visit was to console and engage the military authorities to douse the palpable tension in the community.

He urged fleeing members of the community to return home and called on youths and other stakeholders to help the military fish out the perpetrators of the heinous crime.

He further begged the clergy to continue to pray for lasting peace in the community.

But Okojie was reported to have said that the troops would not molest innocent people.

He assured the people of Nembe that the perpetrators of the dastardly act would be made to account for their mindless actions.

According to him troops are already on the trail of the criminals and will soon arrest and bring them to justice.

Okojie also urged members of the community to volunteer useful information to the military authorities, appealing to them not to be scared of military presence.

Some leaders in the community were said to have spoken at the occasion condemning the killing of the soldiers.

Persons who expressed their condolences were a state lawmaker from Nembe, Ebi Ben-Ololo; Vice-Chairman, Nembe Council, Chief Bright Erewari-Iweka, and Chief Walter Feghabo-Amain.

They noted that since the coming of JTF to Nembe, the community had enjoyed relative peace.
They said members of the community would continue to cooperate with the military to ensure that perpetrators were apprehended and made to face the law.

But a notable chief from the community, Wilfred Ogbotobo, said it had become expedient for the Federal Government to confront the militants with maximum force instead of pampering and indulging them.

He said treating criminals with kid gloves was the reason why they had become emboldened to carry out attacks.

He said: “All the peace-loving people of Nembe condemn in the strongest terms this latest and all forms of criminality perpetrated in Ijaw territories under the guise of Niger Delta struggle.

“We want to sound it loud and clear that these indolent, cowardly and dastardly acts of terrorism with no head or tail would only compound and diminish the genuine struggle for the wellbeing and uplifting of the people and the region”.

Ogbotobo said the despicable acts perpetrated in the region did not represent the ideals of Ijaw heroes such as King Koko of Nembe Kingdom and Isaac Adaka Boro.
“Hence, if the motive is the prevalent delusion that every piracy, kidnapping and destruction means a rational continuation of the Boro militancy, it is warped and unacceptable.

“The Niger Delta comprises different nationalities and cultures; hence, we must be careful about the image with which we brand our identity.

“Any attempt, under a warped and distorted delusion to make the region ungovernable for President Muhammad Buhari would only isolate the Ijaws further.

“Boro certainly would have opted to build a national political party to project the interests of the Ijaws and pursue the aspirations of the people of the region.

“This should not be a period of militancy rather IY should be a period of reflection considering the unprecedented corruption and ineptitude of the past administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, an Ijaw man.”

The Nembe chief said the present realities demanded that the people of the region should imbibe seriousness in their lives, hold their traditional, local and state governments accountable.

He said: “It is abundantly clear that the youths spearheading these dangerous ventures have not been adequately cautioned about the full implications and wrath associated with the kind of things they are doing.

“The Federal Government should, therefore, declare a state of emergency in the affected areas and apply maximum force to dislodge ever criminal tendency and restate the entire region back to safety to fast-track development.”

Military scraps JTF, replaces outfit with ODS

The Defence Headquarters has scrapped the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Pulo Shield (OPS) in the Niger Delta region.

The outfit according to a statement signed by the acting Director, Defence Information, Brig-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, has been replaced with Operation Delta Safe (ODS).

This is the second time the outfit domiciled in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, will undergo reforms and change of name.

The force which was formed before the Federal Government granted amnesty to ex-militants in the region was then known as Operation Restore Hope (ORS).

But following the amnesty programme, it was reorganized with a new mandate to protect oil installations under a codename, Operation Pulo (oil) Shield (OPS).

With the renew militancy and economic terrorism in the region by various militant groups led by the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), it was learnt that the Defence Headquarters reformed, refocused and renamed the outfit ODS.

The statement by Abubakar said: “The OPERATION PULO SHIELD in Niger Delta has been scrapped with immediate effect and replaced with OPERATION DELTA SAFE.

“This is in line with the Defence Headquarters initiative to restructure the Joint Task Force for better service delivery, efficiency and effectiveness in line with the vision and mission of the Chief of Defence Staff to contain the current security challenges in the Niger Delta especially protection of critical national assets and provision of security in the area.

“Under this arrangement, the Joint Operational Areas of the new outfit have been delineated into 3 sectors and 5 Operational Bases covering the entire Niger Delta, Ondo and Akwa Ibom States.  The Headquarters of OPERATION DELTA SAFE would be in Yenagoa.

“This development, according to Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin becomes expedient in order to inject new tactics and robust operational initiative to tackle the emerging security challenges in the Niger Delta region such as piracy, bunkering, vandalism and other criminalities prevalent in the area”.
