X-raying PMB’s Symbolic Visit to Operation Lafiya Dole

To say, I was infinitely inspired by President Muhammadu Buhari’s endearing remarks on the counter-insurgency campaigns in Nigeria’s Northeast and the laudable efforts of the Nigerian military in curtailing the menace of Boko Haram Terrorism (BHT) in his 2017 Independence Day speech to Nigerians is to put it mildly. I was so thrilled to the extent, assuming age was in my favour, I would not have hesitated offering myself for the next enlistment into any arm of the Nigerian military. It captivated me with the feeling of garbing“khaki” to hop into the trenches with the rest of my fellow country men and women in the defence of my cherished country.

Buhari’s speech reminded Nigerians on the necessity to appreciate the military which is fighting Boko Haram insurgency. He thundered; “… Nigerians must be grateful to our gallant Armed Forces for rolling back the frontiers of Boko Haram’s terrorism, defeating them and reducing them to cowardly attacks on soft and vulnerable targets…Not even the most organized and most equipped police and security forces in the world can escape the menace of modern day terrorism, as we have seen in recent years in Europe and other parts of the world.”
After the nationwide broadcast, President Buhari proceeded on an official visit to Maiduguri, the headquarters of the Command Theatre, “Operation Lafiya Dole,” as part of activities marking the 57th anniversary of Nigeria’s independence. The action was symbolic in many respects. First, the verbal appreciation of the courageous and gallant troops by Mr. President from a distance was complemented by Buhari’s physical presence and interface with troops on the battlefield.

The elations of troops hatched fresh resolves and determination to safely get to the victorious destinations of the war on terrorism. It means as individuals, and Nigerians, we could also personally appreciate the military in our small or big ways for the sacrifices they are making for our peace and security.

The pacifying words of succor; the unexpressed words of “I am with you, in body and spirit,” by Mr. President were great stimulants and energizers that could push the fighting spirit of troops to break mountains hitherto dreaded, in search of victory. Anywhere in the world, the visit of Commanders-In-Chief of the Armed Forces is rare and when such visits occur, it changes the direction of several things.

President Buhari also seized the unique opportunity to clarify any possible doubts on the minds of troops about his resoluteness on Nigeria’s peace and unity. Most importantly, he drummed it to troops that the survival of Nigeria depends largely on their patriotism and loyalty to the country; just like the dismemberment of Nigeria would also terribly commensurate burden on the military.

PMB sermonized to our troops; “Even for selfish reasons, your loyalty ought to be to the centre, first. “The security of this nation is in the hands of God and in the hands of the security. If you don’t stand firm, I assure you if Nigeria doesn’t exist, the first to be insecure are the security agencies because no matter how many parts Nigeria will be divided, nobody will take another General to preside over his country.”

Nothing can be greater than this Presidential visit to our troops in the North-East and the ensuing parley. It is further eloquent testimony that Mr. President is not only proud of the Nigerian military, but elated with their performance in quelling BHT and infinitely appreciates the sacrifices and difficulties, but crucially, their unwavering endurance to sustain peace and the unity of Nigeria.

Quite surely, though, the President never uttered it, but President Buhari is over-joyed with the professionalism and discipline of Nigerian military. He is proud of a military now cultured on the abiding faith in civilian leadership of Nigeria and a military, which have factored absolutely as the guardians of our democracy, a departure from the destructive tendencies of the past.

The Military high command is working persistently to victoriously vacate the last presidential order of completely routing out Boko Haram terrorism from our shores. The visit of the C-in-C is the sealing of this pact and the affirmation of the Nigerian Army’s effective co-ordination of the anti-terrorism campaigns in the Northeast.

My attention is not distracted on the fact that through the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and ombudsman of the counter-insurgency campaigns, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai, Nigerians are testifying to the military’s records of meeting the C-in-C’s target of ridding the nation of elements of terrorism, in the Northeast and elsewhere in Nigeria.

It is incontrovertible that Gen. Buratai has proved his mettle as a leader; he has exemplified in a dozen ways his dexterity and professionalism in the handling of the Boko Haram insurgency. On the strength of this reality, Gen. Buratai and his colleagues at the warfront must consistently remember that Nigerians are still anxiously awaiting the final termination of Boko Haram terrorism with the capture of its factional leader, Abubakar Shekau. It is a task we have deemed accomplished, as we have explicit confidence that God will answer our prayers.

We are no less happy at the execution of the last presidential order, which saw the relocation of all Service Chiefs to Maiduguri and the halting of the insurgents attacks on soft and vulnerable targets in the region. They are irrefutable signs of the final receding of terrorism in Nigeria.
The raising of Mobile Strike Teams in the North East by “Operation Lafiya Dole” has thrown the leadership of insurgents into disarray. The Naval presence in the Lake Chad Basin and with the pleasurable news of blocking terrorists’ logistics bases and routes, the stage has been laid for the final victory over insurgency, which Gen. Buratai and his troops are poised to consummate anytime soon to the delight of all Nigerians.

As Nigerians continue to appreciate and identity with Nigerian troops at the battlefield, we are sure Gen. Buratai and his colleagues would strive to win the hearts of the people. They must do everything humanly possible to ensure the peace and victory over terrorists which the military have railroaded is sustained to greater levels of success and victory.
We have not lost sight of the personal sacrifices of troops in prosecuting the terrorism war, much as we are equally empathetic about the deprivations they have endured so that the rest of us can have peace and Nigeria remains one indivisible entity, as against a country dismembered by extremists with some weird ideologies.
Nigerians will continue to burn the midnight candle in beseeching God for the success of the military in this war. And we are already singing the victory song in anticipation of the day Gen. Buratai flanked by his lieutenants would mount the rostrum to break the cheering news that Boko Haram terrorism is finally over in Nigeria.

We have set a banquet awaiting the celebration of every one of you.
The military must realize that although, they are physically on the battlefield, warring with terrorists; but in the actual sense, it is all Nigerians that are at war with insurgents. The military should be buoyed by this reality.

There is no pretenses that those actually fighting terrorists are the same Nigerians who voted President Buhari to preside over the affairs of this great and prosperous nation at this time in history. And that’s why terrorists cannot triumph over the rest of us. It is our common resolve that we shall never allow characters, with satanic philosophies and ideologies, backed by evil foreign forces to seize the land of our forebears.

It is on this premise that we hinge the optimism of the inevitably total elimination of Boko Haram terrorists and other budding terrorists sects in the country by the military. Nigeria must be free!

A large number of Boko Haram terrorists have been killed in two successive air strikes conducted by the Nigerian Air Force Monday and an ambush laid in another operation by troops of the 151 Battalion, 21 Brigade Nigerian Army.

The air strikes were carried out at Zanari, in Borno state, while the ground troops of the operation Lafiya Dole component also neutrilized scores of insurgents in an ambush at Bocost along Ngurosoye-Bama road, in Borno state.

In a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information of the NAF, Air Commodore Olatokunbo Adesanya, the insurgents were hit by two aircrafts in rapid succession with the structures housing them going up in flames.

The NAF air operations were supported with video footages released by Air Commodore Adesanya.

Adesanya said: “In furtherance of the recently commenced Operation RUWAN WUTA, on 7 September 2017, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) conducted air interdiction on structures with 2 hoisted Boko Haram Terrorists (BHT) Organization flags in Zanari, a known location with significant BHT presence at the northern fringes of Borno State bordering Lake Chad.

“Quite a number of BHTs had earlier been spotted, from a NAF Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance platform, entering the buildings apparently for meetings.

“The F-7Ni and the Alpha Jet aircraft were detailed to attack the target. Overhead the location, the target was acquired and engaged by the 2 aircraft, in rapid succession. Subsequent Battle Damage Assessment revealed that the targeted structures went up in flames, killing its occupants.

“The objective of Operation RUWAN WUTA is to further degrade the capability of the BHTs thereby preventing them from regrouping to cause havoc for our surface forces.

“The Operation also aims at softening the ground for our surface forces to subsequently move in and conduct mopping up operations”

Meanwhile Nigerian Army Spokesperson, Brig.General Sani Usman in a statement said: “the Troops of 151 Battalion, 21 Brigade Nigerian Army on operation LAFIYA DOLE, at the early hours of Sunday 10th September 2017, laid a successful ambush on a suspected Boko Haram terrorists crossing point at Bocost along Ngurosoye -Bama road, Borno State.

“The Troops neutralized a large number of the Boko Haram terrorists, while other terrorists sustained gunshot wounds.

“The troops recovered the following items from the terrorists; 1 AK 47 rifle with the registration number 1029, 1 AK 47 magazine, 60 rounds of 7.62mm Special, 3 Bicycles, 4 Empty Jerricans, a Cutlass and the cash sum of Five Thousand and Six Hundred Naira (N5, 600.00k) only”.

Boko Haram: NAF Operations gulps 1.03m Aviation Fuel

The Nigerian Air Force yesterday its air operations against Boko Haram in the North East has gulped over 1.03 million litres of aviation fuel from its reserve.

It added that said its aircraft operations in the Operation Lafiya Dole component have peaked at about  1077 hours so far.

According to the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, the nation’s air power can now be projected effectively beyond the country.

Air Marshal Abubakar disclosed this in Abuja during the opening of strategic meeting with Air Force Branch Chiefs, Air Officers Commanding and Field Commanders at the Air Force Headquarters.

He warned elements of the Boko Haram insurgent groups to have a rethink on their activities in the Northeast, stressing that air operations within the coming weeks against them would be too hot for them to endure.

The Air Force Chief also said he had deployed a team of medical personnel from the service to Makurdi, to attend to victims of last week’s flood in Benue State.

Air Marshal Abubakar who said the meeting was aimed at seeking possible ways of moving the service forward in line with contemporary expectations, disclosed that his administration had graduated 16 trained pilots at the Flying School Kaduna.

He noted that the feat was made possible after 33 years due to some critical challenges within the institution.

He said: “We have done a lot in the last few months in terms of the structure of the Nigerian Air Force,in terms of training,in terms of capacity building and in terms of maintenance.

“Reports from units indicate that we are really making substantial progress as regards responsibilities assigned to us by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The uniqueness about this set of cadets is that this nation s the first time in 32 years that the Nigerian Air Force is graduating cadets from 401 Flying Training School Kaduna, “he said.

Speaking further, Abubakar said:” In the past years,we used to graduate officers, officers graduate from Primary Flying Training in Kaduna.

But by the special grace of God and with the commitment of the Air Officer Training Commanding, the Commander and our late colleague commander, Group Captain Adanu Ochai, who was the Commanding officer of the flying wing,we have been able reverse the train.

“With the graduation of these cadets now,we are looking forward to the day when we will have cadets as instructor pilots. It has happened in the past and it’s going to happen again.”

He added:”Also since we came,we have brought into the service over 1900 recruits, who are supposed to join us in the service to support us to tackle the challenges facing our nation.

“In addition to this, about 106 Direct Short Service cadets have graduated and they have been posted already to different units of the service.

“It is also gratifying to note that we have projected air power beyond Nigeria. The C130 has contacted a number of flights to deliver relief materials to Sierra Leone

“I believe so much has been achieved but we need to evaluate all that we set out to achieve. We are not yet done,we must redouble our efforts especially in the North East.

“I know we have commenced operations in the North East which is aimed at further degrading the Boko Haram. We are going to massively dominate the entire area and make it extremely difficult for anybody that is there that is a criminal who wants to come out to kill innocent Nigerians.”

On what the service has done in its humanitarian programme, Abubakar said:

“In our humanitarian programme,we have 241 IDPs patients have been attended to free of charge.

“I have been briefed by our Chief of Medical Services today that our medical team has been deployed to Makurdi to provide medical services to the indigenes of Benue State that have been affected by recent flood.”

    Shekau: Buratai extends capture deadline

The deadline given to the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru, to capture Abubakar Shekau, leader of the Boko Haram terrorist group, dead or alive has been extended. The extension which was approved by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, after a request for extension by the Theatre Commander, at the expiration of the 40-day deadline. The approval however didn’t specify the period of extension.Shekau: Buratai extends capture deadline

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Friday that the commander requested for an extension of the order to capture Shekau, which was granted by Buratai.

He said, “The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. T.Y. Buratai, has commended the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, his sector commanders and all troops of Operation Lafiya Dole for pursuing the COAS directive of capturing the purported Boko Haram terrorists’ leader, Abubakar Shekau, dead or alive, within 40 days beginning on July 21, 2017, which elapsed on August 30, 2017.

“Although the leader has not been captured, the COAS noted with satisfaction the zeal and determination with which the directive was pursued. He congratulated the commander for eliminating five key leaders of the terrorist group that were the closest associates and right-hand men of the terrorist group leader.

Usman therefore urged citizens to go about their business and have confidence in the capacity of the troops to protect them, stating that with the killing of the 82 terrorists and the top five Boko Haram commanders, Shekau was no longer of any consequence.

  • 68 Boko Haram surrender in three weeks – Army

68 Boko Haram surrender in three weeks – Army

The army has disclosed that a total of 68 Boko Haram insurgents have given up their intention to fight against the Nigerian forces at different locations in the theatre in the last three weeks.

According to a statement signed by the Deputy Director Army Public Relations in the Theatre Command, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu also mentioned that heavy onslaughts on the terrorists’ enclaves have been intensified in air and artillery bombardment denying them of logistics supplies.

Col. Nwachukwu in the statement called on the insurgents to have a second thought on thier ideologies and surrender to any military location in the theatre while assuring them of their safety and protection from the army.

The Statement reads; “Troops in the last few weeks have intensified onslaught against Boko Haram Terrorists through coordinated air and artillery bombardments of BHT enclaves across the Theatre.

“These bombardments are backed by long range patrols and ambushes targeted at preventing fleeing Boko Haram Terrorists from escaping and also denying them access to logistics supply. The sustained operations have further pushed the terrorist group to the brink of defeat with many of its foot soldiers surrendering to troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE.

“So far, a total of 68 insurgents have denounced terrorists activities within the last 3 weeks. These surrendered terrorists also reported that many of the enclaves have become untenable and life has become unbearable for the Boko Haram Terrorists owing to the blockade emplaced by troops and the sustained bombardments. Those who have surrendered and turned a new leaf are currently undergoing rehabilitation and de-radicalization programmes organized by the Federal Government through Operation SAFE CORRIDOR.

“Undoubtedly, the ongoing operations by troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE are yielding results and have put enormous pressure on the Boko Haram Terrorists.  Evidently, this has contributed to the recent plea by one of the factional leaders of the group calling for international support.

“The Theatre Command therefore urges all Boko Haram insurgents to have a rethink and discard the hypocritical ideologies espoused by their leaders. They can surrender to any military location nearest to them. The Theatre Command assures them of their safety and well-being if they surrender willingly”.

  • Boko Haram: Group commend troops of Operation Lafiya Dole

Boko Haram: Group commend troops of Operation Lafiya Dole

A Coalition of over 50 Civil Societies Organizations from Abuja has praised troops of Operation Lafiya Dole over their doggedness and resilience in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgents in the North Eastern part of the country.

The Coalition who visited the headquarters of Operation Lafiya Dole was received by the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru at the Military Command and Control Centre (MCCC), headquarters of the Operation Lafiya Dole, Maimalari Army Cantonment, Maiduguri in company of other top military and security commanders in the theatre.

In his presentation, the leader of the group Comrade Okpakwu Ogenyi expressed happiness over the high spirit fitness of the troop and their combat readiness to crush the Boko Haram insurgents.

“Members of this group met and interacted with Nigerian troops you lead under the various Commands of the Operation Lafiya Dole and were really impressed with our experiences. We were particularly elated to see the gallant Nigerian troops in the counter-terrorism war in the Northeast in high spirits,

“Dear Commanders, we were also pleasantly baffled with the evidently high sense of professionalism, discipline, patriotism,   commitment and hard work you have brought to bear on troops under your control. It is an indication that all of you have keyed into the vision and agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari and the leader of the counter-insurgency war, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. Gen. Tukur  Yusufu Buratai in prosecuting the anti-terrorism campaigns in our country, Nigeria,” Comrade Ogenyi said..

The group was particularly pleased with the overwhelming presence of troops and their activities both in the rebuilding process and social activities  in the region which according to them has brought confidence especially to the rural communities, stressing that it is the first time the army is uniquely carrying out her corporate social responsibility for the country.

“ The overwhelming presence of soldiers in the Northeast and the constant staging of military activities in the region , like the 2017  Nigerian Army Day Celebration have consistently imposed an atmosphere of serenity in communities and dismantled the psychological fear of threats of terrorists.

“During our on-the-spot assessment of some military formations in Borno state, we were delighted at the noticeable impact or shadows of the Nigerian Army in the rebuilding process of ravaged and devastated communities in the Northeast through roads and other infrastructural projects.

“We stand to be corrected, but we believe this is the first time the Nigerian Army is exhibiting its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to host communities very uniquely.  There is every reason to appreciate the leadership acumen of the COAS, Gen. Buratai and indeed, all of you his subordinate commanders in assisting him to redefine and casting of a new positive image on the Nigerian Army”.

The group praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai for his recent redeployment in the army as a way of strengthening the operations while calling on the new commanders to maintain the tempo of the fight.

Comrade Ogenti said: “At this juncture, please permit us to appreciate the wisdom of the Army Chief for the internal redeployments he recently effected in the Nigerian Army. These routine changes are necessary to expose officers to new realms of experience to broaden their knowledge in military operations.  We wish to charge the newly redeployed Commanding Officers to keep the candle burning.

“Particularly, those of you posted to Command Theatre of Operation Lafiya Dole have an onerous duty  and patriotic obligation to Nigeria, not to only sustain the tempo in the counter-insurgency campaigns, but strive to surpass the records of your predecessors by standing up for our country at all times. This is a “mission of no return,” until victory is fully secured.

“We want to assure you that you have won the battle on terrorism. The ceaseless heat you mounted in mopping out the remnants of  Boko Haram insurgents in clearance operations in the Northeast compelled about 700 terrorists,  among them, top commanders on wanted list,    to call for armistice and surrender to the Nigerian Army . We are proud of your performance and you deserve to be celebrated as all of you are heroes.  We cannot afford to negotiate this celebration with anyone, anywhere in the world. Its victory for our country and only us shall celebrate this victory. We shall soon roll out drums for this elaborate celebration.

“Finally, permit us to specially celebrate your Superior Commander, the COAS, Gen. Buratai for his cerebral tactics and strategies in prosecuting the counter-insurgency war. His wizardry in knowing when, where and how to apply any strategy on terrorists humbled insurgents to earn us the victory we all celebrate today. He knows when to change the narrative against the terrorists to keep the camp of his enemies in perpetual disarray. The Army Chief is a soldier dreaded by Boko Haram insurgents and as master of the game, Gen. Buratai knows when to tell insurgents to sit or stand up and they comply. He is truly the African best. Thank you, the “People’s General.”

In his remarks, The Theatre Commander Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Ibrahim  Attahiru, Theatre  Commander of Ops Lafiya Dole  thanked the coalition  for first thinking it wise to come to the north east to get firsthand information of the operations of the troops and the progress been made in the fight against the Boko Haram terrorists.
He noted that the victory over Boko Haram requires collective efforts and not just the military, adding that   such a visit by the CSO today has helped to strengthen them to do more for the country.

Maj. Gen. Attahiru equally  affirmed the commitment of the military to flush out the  remnant of Boko Haram from their hideout anywhere in the country, just as he promised  a to convey the message to all the troops in the Command.

NAF Jets destroy Boko Haram logistics base in Sambisa

The Nigerian Air Force Component of Operation Lafiya Dole said it has destroyed operational base of the Boko Haram insurgent group in the Sambisa forest.

According to the Director of Public Relation and Information of the Nigerian Air Force,  Air Commodore, Olatokunbo Adesanya, an “Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission in the Sambisa general area was carried out as part of on-going efforts to clear the area of remnants of Boko Haram terrorists group.”

The NAF Spokesman said  “On 16 May 2017, the Nigerian Air Force Component of Operation LAFIYA DOLE conducted an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission in the Sambisa general area, as part of ongoing efforts to clear the area of remnants of the Boko Haram Terrorists group.

“During the ISR mission, a black vehicle and some Boko Haram Terrorists were seen on the fringes of the Sambisa Forest. A confirmatory ISR mission on 17 May 2017 revealed that the Boko Haram Terrorists are attempting to build a logistics base in the location.

“Accordingly, Nigerian Air Force fighter aircraft were immediately called in to carry out strikes on the location. Subsequent battle damage assessment revealed that some of the structures and vehicles in the location were engulfed in an inferno and destroyed.

“In addition, several Boko Haram Terrorists within the structures under the tree were possibly killed by the strikes. It will be recalled that the Nigerian Air Force, in a recent attack, frustrated attempts by the Boko Haram Terrorists to regroup in the Sambisa general area”.
