    Opponents challenge Yero’s re-election bid

Kaduna State Governor Muktar Yero’s bid to contest next year’s governorship election has not been a smooth sail. He took over power on December 16, 2012, shortly after the demise of Governor Patrick Yakowa. MUSA ODOSHIMOKHE chronicles his ordeal so far, particularly with regards to his party’s governorship primaries.

Governor Muktar Yero of Kaduna State would be testing his popularity in the forthcoming governorship primaries of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) scheduled for next Monday. This is owing to the fact that other governorship aspirants within the party are not in the mood to allow Yero a smooth sail to continue as the governor. Yero assumed office as governor on December 16, 2012, following the tragic death of his predecessor, Patrick Yakowa, in a helicopter crash.

Four aspirants are contesting against him during the governorship primary. They are: Hassan Felix Hyat, Senator Haruna Zego Aziz, Ismaila Yakawada and Jimmy Dung. The contestants cut across religious and tribal lines.

In the build up to the contest, Governor Yero has been accused of trying to manipulate the process, by hand-picking the delegates to the recent party congress; to ensure that he realizes his ambition. The congress has been criticised as lacking in democratic principles. Three of the aspirants, Hyat, Aziz and Yakawada, which made their position on the primaries known at a press conference in the state capital recently said it fell short of the people’s expectation.

The aspirants have decided to close ranks over the matter, to counter Governor Yero’s alleged antics over the primaries. After their meeting, they urged the leadership of the PDP to address the issue as matter of urgent importance. They alleged that the irregularities observed during the congress must be tackled, if the party would have a good outing the next year’s elections.

At the conference, Dung alleged that names of delegates were written before the actual congress. According to him, it negates the principle of fairness and justice. He said the outcome of the delegate’s congress was beyond the people’s comprehension.

He said the process was a fraud because the names of delegates approved were prepared from Government House; with loyalists of the governor and Vice President Namadi Sambo making the list.

The aspirants believe that it would only be fair when a properly conducted congress was allowed to produce the delegates, noting that the aspirants would not condone act of impunity being displayed by the government.

Yakawada believes the idea of automatic ticket being proposed for PDP governors just completing their first term by the party leadership is a farce, and that it is unacceptable.

He added that aspirants in Kaduna were prepared to slug it out with the incumbent at the primaries, urging the party hierarchy to provide a level-playing ground for the contestants.

He said if there was no proper election and consensus to elect delegates for elections in the party, the party’s professed stance of practicing internal democracy was an illusion.

He added: “I can inform you that there was neither consensus nor election where members agreed that the adopted delegates would represent us during the primaries; they are not the choice of the people.”

But, the Kaduna State PDP Publicity Secretary Ibrahim Mansur has faulted the aspirants, saying they were being economical with the truth. He described as baseless the allegations that the party leadership in the state and Governor Yero hijacked the process leading to the delegates’ congress.

Mansur urged party members to sheathe their swords and work for the unity of the party in the forthcoming polls. He said it is only a united PDP that would ensure continuity and that the division in the party would be too costly.

Some aspirants from the fold had earlier crossed to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), alleging that they fear they would not have fair treatment in the primaries.

A former House of Representatives member, Jagaba James Jagaba, equally dumped the PDP because of what he described as Yero’s antics to hold on to power without popular wish.

The infighting within the party has brought division along ethnic lines, resulting in the formation of alliances and counter alliances.

Despite the re-alignment of political blocs to ensure that the alleged flawed congress does not have negative consequences on the coming primaries, stakeholders are keenly interested in who pilots the affairs of the state from next year.

Ahead of next Monday’s primaries, all the aspirants have agreed to present a united front, by bringing one person forward as a consensus candidate to challenge Yero at the contest.

Political analysts believe the PDP is shooting itself in the foot, by going into the primaries divided.

At one of the meetings attended by various interest groups, Senator Aziz was tipped as the aspirant to slug it out with the governor. The meeting which had in attendant four aspirants from Southern Kaduna, religious bodies, youths and elders drummed support for the consensus arrangement, saying it would help to thwart the plan of the incumbent governor.

In a communiqué presented after the meeting, the Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Council, the Northern Christian Elders Forum, South Kaduna Indigenes Progressives Forum, South Kaduna Peace Initaitives, Gurara Forum and other organisations, urged the people to put aside their differences for the common good.

They said the decision to present a common front in the coming primaries was deliberate and that it would brighten the chances of the aggrieved aspirants; as one of them would be a beneficiary of the arrangement.

The associations believe it would reduce the bickering associated with politicking and reduce the cost of electioneering in terms of finance.

They said: “While it is easy for the other contenders who have agreed to step aside, the onus of collective purpose and communal welfare must be seen to take precedence in order to have one candidate to contest with the incumbent at the PDP primaries scheduled for December 8.

“With this heart-lifting and very promising development, a new Southern Kaduna is born. The depth of our disunity is in the process of being jettisoned for the common purpose. We can now see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“Consequently, we are appealing to all to support the candidature of Senator Aziz at the primaries to achieve our objective of him becoming the PDP flag bearer in the coming elections in February 2015,” the communiqué stated.

2014 ITTF World Cup: Quadri gets Japanese, Russian opponents

Africa’s representative at the 2014 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Cup, Aruna Quadri has been pitched against Japan’s Kenta Matsudaira and Russia’s Alexander Shibaev in group D of the first round of the championship, which serves off today at the ISS Dome in Dusseldorf, Germany.

In the draw conducted at the conference room of ISS Dome, Quadri, who is rated 73 in the world, will begin his campaign for a place in the second round on table two against the Japanese who is ranked 27 in the world.

In his second match of the group today as well, the African champion will take on his familiar foe and world number 37, Russia’s Shibaev on table two this evening to decide the two players from the group that will advance to the main draw scheduled for tomorrow.

The youngest player of the tournament, United States’ Kanak Jha has been handed a tough draw as the young American ranked 423 in the world will tackle world number 22, Chinese Taipei’s Chien-An Chen and Romania’s Adrian Crisan rated 28 in the world in group c.

12 players were drawn into four groups of three players in each group with the top two in each group progressing to the knockout stage against the world top eight with the draw holding tomorrow.

A confident Quadri told Nationsport after the draw that he was sure of progressing to the next round having defeated the Russian at the Czech Open in August.

“I think the pressure will be on the Russian player because he is ranked higher than me in the world and he will be playing under pressure to be able to avenge the loss he suffered during the Czech Open. I am sure that I will give my best against him. Against the Japanese, I think it is going to be nobody’s game because he is not an attacking player because I had lost against the two Japanese I had played against as they were both attackers.

But against Kenta, I will ensure that I match him strength for strength being the first group game for me. I am still hopeful that I will qualify from the group,” Quadri said.

Quadri will be tutored by the German coach, Martin Adomeit, who was engaged by kits company, Joola to handle the Nigerian at the championship.

    Rangers ponder ACL opponents’ style

Enugu Rangers’ defensive midfielder, Ugonna Uzochukwu has said their CAF Champions League preliminary round opponents, SC Do Principe of Sao Tome & Principe will not pose a hard nut to crack.

The African football body on Monday handed the Coal City side a relatively fair opposition to kick-start their African title chase.

Uzochukwu, who claimed the Sao Tome foes are completely strange, said the Flying Antelopes will aim to win convincingly at home.

“We don’t have faintest knowledge of the Sao Tome & Principe foes, and their name is strange. We’re going ahead with our preparations hoping that after we host them in Enugu we’ll know something about them before the second leg.

“So playing at home first appears to work in our favour as we’re determined to win convincingly at least to make the second fixture a mere formality. My teammates are in top shape and rearing to go. We’re engaging top sides in tune-up matches to build up our morale and confidence going into the encounter,” said the Super Eagles right full back to supersport.com.

Uzochukwu assured that his side will give Nigerians good representation at the continent.

“We’re not in the continent to make up the numbers but to challenge for the title. Nigerians should be rest assured we won’t disappoint,” he said.

Rangers will host the visitors at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu at the weekend of February 15 and 17 while the return leg holds in fortnight in Sao Tome & Principe.

  • 2013 Africa Cup of Nations: Keshi wary of opponents

2013 Africa Cup of Nations: Keshi wary of opponents

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has stressed there are no minnows in Nigeria’s group for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Keshi’s side have been drawn in the tournament’s Group C, which comprises Zambia, Burkina Faso and Ethiopia.

Despite being favoured to top the group, Keshi says that his team will treat their rivals with equal respect.

“I don’t think there is any weak side amongst the teams that have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa,” Keshi told Goal.com.

“If you have qualified, that means the team merits it. So any group that you find yourself in you just have to do what you have to do to survive in the group.

“There is no cheap group and I really don’t think there is a big group either. All teams that qualified are there on equal strength until otherwise proved during the course of the competition.

“The most important thing is how you prepare your team as the mentality of the players and their attitude is the key to success in the competition.”

Nigerian players are currently enjoying a rich vein of form for clubs across Europe and, while pleased with that news, Keshi is anticipating some tough decisions when selecting his squad for the biennial tournament.

“I think the fine form of my players in Europe is quite heart-warming news most especially coming at a time we are planning our final preparations for the 2013 Nations Cup in South Africa,” he said. “It is good for a coach to have multiple choices that he can pick from.

“This is what I want so it is a good thing for us. But we have a number of attackers we need to take along to the Nations Cup. We surely cannot take everybody there because we have other departments to consider like the midfield, the defence and even the goalkeeping area.

“We have a stipulated number of players that we can actually take to the competition, so we will see.

“Whoever we think is ready that will not only play the game but also help in engendering team spirit and also help the team to achieve the result we crave for will be invited.”

‘Eagles cannot afford to underrate AFCON opponents’

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has warned the Super Eagles against looking down on their Group C opponents Zambia, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, if they want to advance beyond the first round.

The NFF’s Chief Media Officer, Demola Olajire in a brief chat with SportingLife shortly after the draws noted that though the senior national team got a balance draw adding that the Football House was already prepared for any eventuality in agreement with the comments from the Eagles’ boss, Stephen Keshi prior to the draws.

Olajire disclosed that the build up for the next Nations Cup would start immediately Keshi returns from his trip to South Africa. ment and to ratify the sure bet for an impressive competition in South Africa.

He said that the NFF will do everything within reach to ensure that the Eagles get to the target set by the nation’s president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan who charged the team to go all out and win the Nations Cup to halt the cup drought experienced by the senior national team lately.

“Coach Keshi said before the draw that he is prepared for any team,” he said.

“The important thing is to prepare very well and have the mind to go in there and do a job.

“It is not the teams that you meet at the preliminary stage that matter but how prepared you are to take on those opponents that you meet later on in the competition. You really have to beat the best from other groups too to stand any chance to win the competition.

“Yes our group rivals look good but still the Super Eagles cannot afford to underrate any team if we are serious with our aspirations.”
