    Court remands five for ‘buying’ two ladies for prostitution

    Five persons have been remanded to prison custody for allegedly buying two females for the purpose of using them for prostitution in Libya.

    The accused persons, Osaro Rasheed (47), Caroline Oyasiri (52), Christopher Erhahon (50), Hellen Osarobo (46) and Roland Egbon (52) were arraigned before an Oredo Magistrates Court.

    They were arraigned on a three-count charge of procurement for prostitution, human trafficking and illegal entry.

    Names of their victims were given as Everln Oghagbon aged 23 and Mary Osarobo aged 23.

    The accused persons were alleged to be engaging in ‘exporting’ their victims to Libya for prostitution and other sexual exploitation.

    Prosecutor Patrick Agbonifo told the court the accused persons ‘did fraudulent entry of their victims to Libya of which they are not citizens or permanent residents, in order to obtain financial and material benefit’.

    He noted that the offences which were committed in May 2016 are contrary to and punishable under section 27, 14(b) and 26(1) of the trafficking in persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act 2015.

    Presiding Magistrate, Chief Magistrate F.E Akhere referred the case file to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

    He adjourned hearing of the case to November 24th, 2017.

  • Court remands two men over alleged homosexuality, stealing

    An Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin on Wednesday ordered the remand in prison of two men, Paul Frank, 31, and Christian Ejimofor, 22, over alleged homosexuality and stealing.

    Frank and Ejimofor, whose addresses are unknown, allegedly committed the crime between Dec. 14 and Dec. 16, 2016 at Embassy Hotel, off Boundary Road, in Benin.

    The prosecution told the court that the accused allegedly romanced and had carnal knowledge of each other.

    The prosecution said further that the accused also attempted to have carnal knowledge of one Solomon Shaibu after stealing his Techno Y6 phone, valued at N25, 000.

    It said the offence contravened Sections 214(3), 217 (3) and 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 48 Vol. II of the defunct Bendel State.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mrs M.C. Ojobo, ordered that the accused should be remanded in prison and adjourned the matter indefinitely.

    Teenager bags 12 months for stealing N5,000 phone

    An Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo, on Wednesday, sentenced a teenager, Shegun Olamide to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a N5,000 cell phone.

    The Magistrate, Mrs P.E Foy-Yamah, sentenced Olamide, 18, after he pleaded guilty to a charge of theft and begged the court for mercy.

    The Prosecutor, Insp. Ada Johnbull told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct. 21 at about 4:00pm in Benin City.

    Johnbull said the accused stole the N5,000 handset from one Amen Kingsley.

    He said the offence contravened Section 390 of the Criminal Code.

  • Court jails teenager one year for rape

    An Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin on Wednesday jailed a teenager, Taofeek Ibrahim, to one year imprisonment for unlawful attempt to have carnal knowledge of a five-year-old girl.

    Ibrahim, 14, was tried on a one-count charge of unlawful carnal knowledge.

    The Magistrates’, Mrs J.O Ejale, however, gave the convict an option to N20, 000 as fine.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Thomas Ojo, told the court that the convict committed the crime on July 14, 5015, at No. 37, at Iwehen Str., Benin city.

    Ojo said the offence contravened Section 218 of the criminal Code.

    Man jailed for stealing credentials

    Osagie Otabor, Benin

    A 46-year old man identified as Emmanuel David has been jailed by an Oredo Magistrates Court sitting in Benin City for stealing credentials, cash and clothings.

    Emmanuel was jailed to 12 months imprisonment after he was found guilty of the two count charges preferred against him.

    Police prosecutor, ASP Sylvester Omor,  told the Court that the convict committed the offence on July 16, at No. 10 Wire road, where he stole the sum of N17, 000, a lap-top bag valued at N3,000, two pair of jeans valued at N5,000 and T-Shirt valued N5,000 from one Okereke Uchena.

    The convict pleaded guilty to the two count charge against him bothering on stealing and malicious damage.

    Presiding Magistrates, Mr A.P Saiki, in his judgment sentenced Emmanuel to six months imprisonment without an option of fine in each of the charges.

    Edo: Man remanded for defiling minor

    A 22-years-old man, Osamudiamen Sylvester, has been remanded to prison custody for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl.

    Osamudiamen was remanded by an Oredo Magistrates Court sitting in Benin City.

    State Prosecuting Counsel, Mrs Osasu Ewemade, told the court that the accused allegedly had carnal knowledge of the teenager on July 3, at No. 1 Ekhator Street, Off Siluko Road in Benin.

    The accused pleaded not guilty of the one count charge preferred against him.

    Presiding Chief Magistrates, Mrs Igho Braimoh, in her ruling said application for bail would be consider in the course of trial.

    Braimoh remanded the accused to Oko prison and adjourned the case till July 20, for hearing.

    Man jailed for assaulting neighbour

    A 20-year-old man, Okoro Onuwa, has been sentenced to seven months imprisonment by an Oredo Magistrates Court sitting in Benin City for assaulting his neighbour and inflicting bodily injuries on her.

    The convict was first arraigned on July 7, 2014, on two counts bothering on assault even though the offence was committed on June 27, 2013.

    Police prosecutor, Thomas Ojo, identified the victim as one Odigie Stella Maris, and told the court that the convict punched the victim on the head during a fracas.

    Ojo said the victim was injured on her forehead.

    Okoro however pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Presiding magistrate, Mrs. J. O. Ejale, found Okoro guilty in the first count and sentenced him to six imprisonment or an option of fine of N10, 000.

    Ejale also sentenced him to one month imprisonment in count two or an option of fine of N5, 000.
