Judge refuses Orekoya kids’ kidnap suspect bail

A Lagos High Court yesterday dismissed an application for bail filed by a housemaid, Funmilayo Adeyemi, accused of kidnapping five children from two families.

Justice Raliat Adebiyi held that the defendant provided no evidence of her alleged health challenge, adding that there is a likelihood of her interfering with her trial if granted bail.

The judge upheld the prosecution’s argument that the grant of bail on health grounds was a special circumstance which required proof.

According to Justice Adebiyi, though the defendant has been in custody since April 15, last year, she “tendered no evidence of her health challenge.”

She said there appeared to be overwhelming evidence that the defendant committed the offence.

The court said the offence carried 21 years imprisonment, adding that she or her gang members may try to interfere with the trial, if she is granted bail.

“This application fails in its entirety and is hereby rejected,” Justice Adebiyi held.

Adeyemi (a.k.a Mary Akinloye), 35, from Ogboya village in Ife, Osun State, was arraigned on May 4, on a seven-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping.

The police alleged that in December, 2014, Adeyemi and others at large kidnapped two siblings, Raphael and Michael Esharegaran from their parents’ home at Gateway Estate in Magodo-Isheri, Lagos.

On April 8, last year, the defendant was also accused of conniving with others at large to kidnap three children of the Orekoya family, identified as Demola, 6, Adedamola, 4, and Aderomola, 11 months.

It was claimed that the boys, who were abducted from their home on Lawanson Road, Surulere, were reunited with their parents after N2.5million ransom.

  • Orekoya and wife relive ordeal

    Orekoya and wife relive ordeal

A day after they reunited with their children, the parents of three children kidnapped by a nanny in Lagos, Mr Adeleke Orekoya and his wife, Adebisi, relive their experience in a chat with journalists. TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO was there,

How has it been with the family in the last one week?

It has not been easy over the past seven, eight days. At some point, things got out of hands that we did not even know which direction to turn to. But I thank God because the impact of the prayers was richly felt via the direction that He gave us. We want to thank everybody, friends and family members, even those we did not know that called in to say one thing or the other. They advised us on how to go about things and to even pray on our behalf. We want to thank everybody, including the media.

Any regrets with the way things turned out?

I do not have any regrets getting her (the nanny, Funmilayo) from OLX because I have been using OLX for more than three years now. As a matter of fact, I have had three different nannies over the past two to three years, and I got them from OLX. In fact, I must say that two nannies before this, I got them through OLX. One stayed with us for two years without any issue. The agent contacted us, we recruited her and she stayed with us for two years. When it was time for her to leave, she gave us one month and left thereafter.

After that, we got another one who absconded without any information whatsoever. We gave her Easter break; she went and didn’t come back. She did not even call. And then we ran into this one. It can happen to anyone with a nanny, whether she has been with you for three years or one day or even 25 years. The most important thing is that prayer is the only way that can safeguard one from what we went through.

Indeed, we had our wrong, which is that we prioritised work to a large extent over our assets, including our children. As a result, we paid dearly for it. The trauma we went through cannot be described because there were some other things that came up that we didn’t discuss with anybody. We had four instances of scammers calling us and pretending to be the kidnappers. One even called last (Wednesday) night after we have recovered our children, telling us that the kids were with him and demanding for money. You can imagine how evil some people can be.

Are you considering instituting court action against OLX?

There is no reason on earth for us to institute a court action against OLX. We requested for a nanny and somebody applied. That the person that applied had other motives other than that doesn’t mean that the platform on which we placed the advert is at fault. It wasn’t OLX that sent the person to us. They only allow us to place an advert for what we need. Somebody else can apply. It is our responsibility to be vigilant while recruiting the person.

But the point I am making now is that the nanny could have been with us for three months and still do what she did.

It didn’t make us think OLX is not a good site to use. Like I said earlier, we learnt our lesson. We made a mistake but it doesn’t mean someone that doesn’t make mistake cannot be subjected to what we went through. The people that can hit you the most are the people that are closest to you. Someone that is far away from you cannot know when you would not be at home. And whenever you have a nanny, nobody can tell me that if he has a nanny, he or she has never left home with the nanny and kids alone, except we are deceiving ourselves.

There is no fault on OLX in what has happened. OLX provided a platform for people to advertise and to make a request for whatever they want. It is the primary responsibility of whoever has advertised or is buying anything to put all the necessary checks and balances in place.

How do you feel reuniting with your kids?

You know when your joy hits the roof and goes beyond the roof, that kind of feeling where you jump up for joy. We already had the information earlier in the day. It wasn’t as if it was new to us that night. We knew we were going to get the children back that day (Wednesday). The day we got the children back, we knew we were going to get them back. The only thing was that because of what we were doing, we could not let anybody know.

Would you go for another nanny?

In respect to that, our focus now is that our children should live safely. That there would be another nanny to be recruited later is not something I want to think about right now. The most important thing is that the one week the children have been away, I have had some differences here and there. My focus right now is to erase any psychological issue they may have had by bonding with them and making them remember the things we used to do.

Mrs Adebisi Orekoya on the nanny

She was just here for one day. I don’t know what motive she might have had but money is the root of all evils as people say. The desire for money can make anybody to do anything.

What happened to me can happen to anyone. I believe human beings come in different forms. They can be good and they can be bad. Even this nanny can be an angel to some people, but she is an evil person in another direction. If someone does something wrong to me, I want to understand what made the person do it. I understand now that Mary is a kidnapper. That is her job and she is a professional.

But she was like an angel when she resumed. The lady that spent one month here could not do what she did in one day. She is a very clean person and well-trained. We cannot because of that say we should be careful with everyone that acts like an angel. I don’t want to join in what everyone else has said about her. If she had continued with what she was doing and stayed on till the second day and a year, nobody would say anything bad about her. The mistake I made is that I left her with my kids.

Seeing your kids naked at Egbeda…

On seeing my kids, I know that they had not been taking good care of them. They left them naked. One of them said, ‘Mummy, imagine. They put us inside nylon and the heat was too much. Look at my body. They put us inside nylon and locked us in a car.’ I was thinking they even put them inside the boot. I would like to see Mary and somebody should help me do the same to her so that she would know how the children felt. It is like I am still dreaming.

Did your children say if they were in one place or moved about?

They only told me “our new house” whenever they referred to where they were taken to. I asked how many people were there and they said, “One guy like that like our brother’s face.” So I guess there are still some kids in their custody. They said they were only given noodles and rice. A kidnapper that is asking for money is doing business. I would have expected them to take good care of my children.

How has it been for you?

You’ve been here. I’ve heard some people saying I was going crazy, and it is true because if I sit, I would still be imagining, “three children”.

What do you have to say about women who are full housewives?

They love their children. My husband is not a politician so he cannot be pumping me with money.

What advice do you have for fellow women?

Prayer is the only thing that helps anyone. Looking at all that has happened and the possibilities that could have taken place, we believe it is only God’s help and prayer that can save anyone from going through what we have been through. It is not because we were not being diligent. What I can say in all this is that God’s favour and prayer is the only safeguard.

    Police arrest Orekoya kids kidnapper

Funmilayo Adeyemi, the house-help who kidnapped three children from the Orekoya family in Lagos state has been arrested.

Her arrest was confirmed on Thursday by the Lagos state Police Commissioner,  Mr Kayode Aderanti while speaking on Sunrise Daily.

“We swung into action, transferred it (the case) to the headquarters and assigned it to our Special Investigation Bureau (SIB) and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

“Along the way, we tried to do everything possible because of the safety of these kids; so paramount to us.

“So we did everything possible to narrow down the space to Shasha area and found the children abandoned in the building and we went there and evacuated them to safety.

“But the beautiful thing is that the maid, Mary Adeyemi , was arrested yesterday night,” he said.

The three kidnapped children of the Orekoya family, aged 4, 6, and 11 years old were kidnapped by the new house maid – Adeyemi , who was hired through an online platform in Lagos State.

Jubilation as Orekoya kids return home

There was joy on the Orekoyas’ Lawanson, Surulere, Lagos home yesterday following the return of their kidnapped children.

The children Ademola (6), Adedamola (4) and Aderomola (11 months) were released by their abductors on Tuesday night; they reunited with their parents around 9p.m.

It was learnt that the family paid a ransom for the boys’ release. The undisclosed amount was paid into a bank in Sagamu, Ogun State, before the children were released in Shasha, Egbeda, Lagos.

Their parents were told to where to pick them up.

On realising that the Orekoyas could not afford the initial N13 million ransom, the kidnappers, it was learnt reduced the sum and told them of how to make it available.

A source told The Nation that the search for the kids climaxed on Tuesday, with their father, Adeleke Orekoya, going to Sagamu to pay the ransom.

The family, the source said, met the toddlers unclad at the address given by the kidnappers later that night.

But, the police are claiming to have outgunned the kidnappers to rescue the boys.

The kidnappers, police spokesman Kenneth Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), claimed fled under police superior fire power, and abandoned the children.

The police, he said, swooped on the abductors following detailed intelligence and cutting edge technology.

Nwosu said no one was killed or injured in the encounter. No arrest was also made.

Reliving how the kids were found, their aunt, Mrs Adesumbo Alabi said:  ‘’It was after they called the family on (Tuesday night), I can’t be specific  about the time but it was in the night that they found the children. They were all naked on the road. They were asked to go and pay some money at a bank in Sagamu. After paying the money, in the night they now called them (Orekoyas) and told them to go to Egbeda. They described the place for them.

‘’So they went there in the night and found the children. They were all naked and alone. Immediately they got there and saw the children, they took them to the hospital, (Cottage Hospital/Comprehensive Health College, inside Police College, Ikeja).

‘’The kids were not well fed by their abductors. They looked malnourished, traumatised with rashes and mosquito bites on their bodies. They were left bare footed but we thank God that they are alive.’’

The children’s grandfather, Apostle Adegoke Adekunle while jubilating over the safe return of the boys, claimed that the police initially frustrated rescue efforts.

He said but for the intervention of the Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, who ordered the Divisional Police Officer, Itire to act swiftly, policemen were unwilling to take the kids’ mother’s complaint.

‘’I am happy today because I know I have not done evil to anybody. God whom I serve has rescued my grandchildren for me. When I was called that they have been kidnapped, I did not know what to do but I knew I have God. I went to churches to pray and I thank God today that they are safe.

‘’We did many things with police. The commissioner came here. He was the one who called the DPO demanding an investigation into the case. The Investigating Police Officer (IPO) who recorded my daughter’s statement just dropped the paper until the commissioner called the DPO about the matter.

‘’After the commissioner’s call, both the DPO and station officer came to the house and I scolded the IPO who took the first statement for his unprofessional attitude. So, another policeman was sent to come and take statement and a police team was sent from Alausa as well,’’ he said.

In the morning yesterday, it was celebration galore at the Orekoyas’ home as well-wishers gathered to thank God.

The Orekoyas in a Thank You message posted on social media around midnight gave God the glory.

The message reads: “We give God all the glory. Our Orekoya missing kids have been found. Thank you so much everyone for your prayers, moral and financial support all along. The list is endless, of awesome mothers, sisters, colleagues, business partners; father’s and even kids too. You have been amazing! May God grant all your hearts’ desires too? Much love always. You will not lose your children.”

Shouts of congratulations! “Thank you, God,” rang out at the Orekoyas’ home during the jubilation.

“God has answered our prayers. He did not disappoint us with the rescue of the children. This, we pray, will be the beginning of uncountable good things from God to this family,” an in-law of the Orekoyas said.

There were praise songs and worship; some had theirs in the sitting room; the kids’ grandparents and few family members stayed in a bedroom.

Adekunle thanked The Nation for its consistency on the reports, saying, the paper did well.

The Nation observed that the children have shortly after their return home yesterday, the children promptly got back to their routine and were happy to be home.

Ademola, who opened the door for our reporters, was busy playing with an IPAD on the dining table with his brother, Michael; Adedamola jumped from one part of the house to the other.

Ademola, a Basic one pupil, told our reporters that their abductors did not torture them but removed their clothes.

Mr Orekoya addled 11-month-old Aderomola and declined interviews because he is still bonding with his children so as to “observe changes in them”.

  • Kidnappers demand N13m ransom for Orekoya kids

Kidnappers demand N13m ransom for Orekoya kids

Kidnappers of the Orekoya kids have demanded a N13 million ransom for their release.

The kids were abducted by their housemaid on April 8, a day after she was hired.

The kids are Ademola (6), Adedamola (4) and Aderomola (11 months).

The housemaid, Mary Akinloye, a 23-year-old indigene of Ibadan, Oyo States, was said to have been hired through OLX, an online trading portal.

The agency, formerly known as Dealfish, deals in buying and selling; it is also a free classified advert website where one can easily post adverts including vacancies for free.

Akinloye was said to have told the kids’ eldest brother, Michael (10), that she was going to buy his siblings’ biscuits.

Yesterday, the Orekoyas got a call, asking them to pay a N13 million ransom.

All the family’s efforts to reach the maid had failed until yesterday. The Ikorodu, Lagos address she gave could also not be traced.

Michael alerted their mother to the disappearance of his siblings when the maid did not return with them by 1pm, about five hours after they left home.

Around 9am yesterday, the children’s mother, Mrs Adebisi Orekoya reached the maid’s phone, but heard a male voice that demanded a N13 million ransom.

The Orekoyas begged to speak with their children and the kidnappers promised to get back to them at 10am.

“They called at 10am and gave the phone to my children; I asked them (two of the children) ‘how are you?’ They said ‘mummy, we are fine.’ The kidnappers then told us to get the money as soon as possible, else…,” she told The Nation yesterday at their Lawanson Road, Surulere, Lagos residence.

A distraught Mrs Orekoya wondered how the woman she decided to help turned to hurt her.

“I just want to appeal to them to return my children; we do not have that kind of money. I wonder what they are given the 11-month old baby to eat since yesterday,” she said.

Mrs Orekoya, who works in a bank, urged the police to help recover her children.

She seemed to have had a premonition of the incidence, saying: “I was supposed to leave home by 6am that day to resume work by 7:30am but I couldn’t leave until 7:30am. Despite that I kept returning to our apartment from downstairs, asking the children if they were alright. They replied ‘yes.’ I will go downstairs again and return up stairs, going to their (children’s) room asking again if they were alright and they would say ‘Yes mum.’ That was how I left home after the third time of doing so; it’s unfortunate that it turned out this way.”

Mrs Orekoya’s father, Senior Apostle Adegoke Adekunle, appealed to the kidnappers to release his grand children.

He said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Itire Police Station, Isah Abdulmajid has visited the family, adding: “We hope the security agents will help with their (children) release.”

The Nation saw family members and other well wishers in the sitting room, commiserating with the Orekoyas.

Lagos Police Command spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), confirmed the ransom demanded by the kidnappers.

He said efforts were on to nail the culprits and rescues the children.

“All hands must be on the deck to rescue the children,” he said.
