    Ekiti to organise Six A-Side hockey competition — coach

    The Ekiti State Sports Council has concluded arrangement to organise a Six A-Side hockey tournament to select players for the forthcoming National U-16 Hockey Championship scheduled for Port Harcourt in July.

    The dates for the Port Harcourt competition has yet-to-be fixed.

    The state Hockey Coach, Kayode Alabi, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti that the tournament would be between two secondary schools in the state.

    The schools are Omuo Comprehensive High School and Omuo Ore Secondary School. The one day event would hold on May 27 in Omuo Ekiti.

    He said the competition, which would kick off by 10.00 a.m. would enable the council to select talented boys and girls from the two schools for the Port Harcourt competition.

    The coach appealed to parents and principals of the schools to allow their children and students to participate in the competition to facilitate the selection of outstanding players.

    West African basketball body donates equipment to Zaria military school Zaria (Kaduna State), May 21, 2015 (NAN) A veteran basketball player, Sam Amedu donated some basketball court and equipment to the Nigeria Military School (NMS) Zaria.

    Amedu, an ex-boy of NMS donated a fibre glass upright.

    “With modern facilities, the students will be able to ensure a healthy body and healthy mind in line with the military tradition.

    He explained that the donation of a court was to enable students to train and even become national or professional players.

    “As ex-boys of this school, we will sustain support for growth of the institution as a centre of learning and sporting excellence,” he stressed.

    Amedu, a retired colonel, doubles as president of the West African Basketball Association.

    The president of the NMS ex Boys association, also a retired colonel, Jibril Muhammad-Hassan, who witnessed the event, described the donation as `unique’.

  • Anambra 2013: Electoral group to organise debates for candidates

    THE Nigeria Election Debates Group (NEDG) is to organise debates for the 23 governorship candidates and their running mates in the November 16 election in Anambra State.

    The NEDG Chairman, Aremo Taiwo Alimi, spoke with reporters yesterday at the White View Hotels, Awka.

    He said they would organise issue-based debates for the candidates, who had been cleared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

    NEDG comprises 11 non-government organisations, including the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON), Nigeria Guild of Editors, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

    Others are the Election Reform Network and Transition Monitoring Group.

    Alimi said the debates would hold in two sessions on October 22 for the running mates and October 29 and 31 for the governorship candidates.

    Said he: “Media and civil society groups seek to set agenda and give the electorate an opportunity to get relevant information about the governorship candidates and their running mates.

    “What we are doing is to provide a platform through which every candidate will have the opportunity of telling the voters what he can do.”

    Alimi said those who would take part in the final debate on October 31 would be determined by the outcome of an opinion poll by the electorate, to be conducted by credible researchers.

    “We will have as part of the debate, a non-participating audience that would not clap or praise any of the candidates. We would put the candidates on a level-playing field. We did it successfully in Edo and Ondo states.”

    NEDG Executive Secretary, Eddie Emesiri, said they would come to Anambra State to promote democracy and good governance.

  • Baptists organise workers’ seminar

    ITESIWAJU Baptist Association will tomorrow hold a workers’ seminar at Itire Baptist Church, Isiba Street, Itire, Lagos.

    The seminar is for officers and workers in the church and organs of the association.

    It will start by 9am. The theme of the seminar is: “Building a prevailing church in such a time as this”.

    It will feature topics on “How to build a prevailing church”; “Church administration in a local Baptist Church” and “The church and contemporary issues (security, fire and environment problems)”.

    The guest speakers are Rev. O.K. Babarinde, Rev. E. A. O. Oguntokun and Inspector O. A. Adenigba, among others.

    Youths organise forum with Akeredolu

    A team of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) youths will on Monday hold a forum with the party’s candidate, Mr Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

    The forum will hold at the BOT Hall, Akure, the Ondo State capital, at 10am.

    It will enable 2,000 youths to interact with the ACN candidate on issues affecting them and the change they desire in the state.

    A statement by the party said there would be a special performance by Nigeria’s music star, 9ice.

    It said the event would be aired live on some television stations nationwide.

    Also expected at the forum are party leaders and National Assembly members, to enable various parties partner ACN for positive changes in Ondo State.

    The statement urged Ondo youths and indigenes, who desire positive changes, to join ACN to sweep away other parties.
